IS AT&T SGSIII carrier-locked when paying for the full price? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

I'm attempting to buy the AT&T SGSIII with the full price since it's probably the cheapest you can get among all the options.
As I am going to use it on Rogers network in Canada, I would like to know if it's carrier-locked even i pay for the full price???
I know Android phones are pretty easy to get unlocked. I just don't want the hassle.
I plan on driving down to the Seattle this upcoming weekend and nail one!!! Cannot wait anymore!

Even if you get it without commitment, the device will still be locked. AT&T won't unlock it for about six months (I don't know the exact length). Why not just try cellunlocker.net? It unlocked my phone in thirty mins. It's just 25$ so give it a try

Wow..... 6 months.... So, if i get it unlocked through cellunlocker.net, and I flash back to the factory setting and have AT&T unlocked it for me 6 months later?? Will they still honor the warranty??
Sorry for my noob question. Coming from iPhone and not quite familiar with American carrier.

AT&T says they have a 6 month period when they have exclusivity on the phones, but they obviously don't have exclusive rights in the US. Also, they've been unlocking iPhones that were purchased outright, so you can use that to your advantage.

Once you do a sim unlock, it's unlocked forever. No need to get a code from AT&T when it's available.
AT&T is interested in selling phones for it's network, not selling to people looking to sell or take them somewhere else.

How to unlock the phone

I'm thinking to buy AT&T version of Galaxy S4. I would like to use the phone abroad when I travel with local sim cards, so I want to have it unlocked.
As I understand, even if I buy unsubsidized phone, it will be still locked to AT&T network.
So the question, if I have it root'ed using this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252248
will it automatically become carrier unlocked ? Or do I need to install a custom ROM as well (are there any custom ROMs for I9505 version) ?
No, rooting a phone does not make it carrier unlocked. I don't particularly know if there is a carrier unlock method for the S4 yet (go search the forms), but Negri Electronics (online shop) sells an unlocked AT&T version of the phone that you might look in to, though it is a little more expensive.
Thanks for pointing to them !
They do have a model I want to buy, but it's available only for pre-order and about $100 more expensive than AT&T's version
Buy the unlock code. I did it already.

That my friend is a bold-faced lie. No locking is done without a key available to unlock it. They just don't want to share.
Att can definitely unlock it they just choose not to. Regardless I got mine unlocked today with cellunlocker.net took about 15 minutes and cost $24.99. Got my GS4 on T-Mobile for now.

Further proof that the unlock code is available!
I was at AT&T. We looked up the information while in the store. If you sign the 2 year contract they will give you the unlock code after 3 months. If you pay full price and go prepaid service you have to wait 6 months before they will give you the code. I read it right from the AT&T's sales reps. tablet.

I've read several accounts of people who recently bought an Att phone at full price and with no contract who where able to unlock their phone through Att. You really have to be vigilant. I just ordered an s4 from amazon and will try to unlock it tomorrow to use with my T-Mobile sim.

If you unlock using a code bought from one of this website offering this kind of service would it be a permanent unlock? You won't have any problem updating firmwares, OS, or anything?

AT&T Flat out refusing to Unlock my phone

I paid full price for my phone, I have called and spoken to 5 different AT&T Reps and every single one of them either tells me "we cant do it" or that the "code isnt available" . With the new law thing i though if you paid full non contract price for a phone they were obligated to unlock for you?

I would speak to a manager. Did you buy the phone directly from them? Most unlocking services have the codes in their systems now so there is no way AT&T doesn't have the code.

I would try an online chat with technical support. That is how I got my code for my Galaxy S3.
Funny thing is, I remember AT&T stating that they unlocked phones anyway and the new law was unnecessary.

Apparently you cant gain access to online support unless you have an Att account... which i do not as i am not an ATT customer.
i finally found a way to get a hold of someone via live chat and this is what i was told
"Tana Kimble: I do apologize Teddy, your device has to be at least 30 days old before the unlock codes are released to us."

I work for AT&T, and we usually don't unlock new phones for the first 6 months a phone is out. Especially with a flagship phone.
Your best bet is to go through a 3rd party and just suck it up and pay for the unlock.
AT&T is under no obligation to give you an unlock code. They do it strictly as a courtesy.
I dont know if this helps, but when i bought my note 2 last november after it came out... i did so off contract and i ran into the same issue. AT&T reps typically seem like they get the codes 30-90 days after a product comes out and then theyll happily unlock it for you.. it seems like they aren't going to or arent able to unlock a brand new phone that just released.
Search is your friend. There are several unlock methods ive seen posted on xda.

Ran into this today, CS rep flat out told me that it was impossible to unlock the AT&T version of the Galaxy S IV.
I was giving serious thought to returning my ATT S4 and buying a TMOBILE S4 (which doesn't have a locked boot loader) and then using it on ATT. TMOBILE Is heavily promoting that they don't lock you into contracts and will unlock your phone if you leave. When I contacted TMOBILE and asked if I could buy an S4 outright and then get it unlocked so I could use it on ATT they said they could do it - but that I had to wait 60 days after buying the phone to get it unlocked. Seemed kind of heavy handed to me - if I paid full price for the phone why would they make me wait 60 days?
@ att. Rep... I got my sgs3 un-locked when I got it in July/ Aug. No way after 6 months. And it was no problem

Courtesy?
My question is this and as you say you work for AT&T so you might be able to give me a straight answer... If I DON'T get the phone at a contract price and pay the $639.99 why should AT&T care what I do with the phone then? I can understand them not wanting to share codes for a subsidized phone but full retail? What do they loose by not sharing the code? With the prevalence of services like cellunlocker.net they don't have the ability to keep the device on lock down.
I just don't get the big deal assuming one opts to pay full non-contract price.

Not many people are aware of this but att actually provides unlock sim codes up to 5 a year. I believe you just have to be in good standing with them for like 3 months or something close to that. Just call them up, they'll either do it over the phone or direct you to a website to submitt a request. I called them up recently to get the sim unlock for my gs4. After a few minutes they gave me the code. Now as soon as I get my note 3, I can sell my s4 as an unlock.

Even putting aside the bad English, your question does not make any sense. "unlocked" refers to GSM network only feature, called carrier lock or network lock. There is no such thing as "LTE unlocked" or any type of unlock for CDMA network, such as VZW

I got a Nexus 6 straight from Sprint, and I'm using my Verizon sim. The Verizon sim actually works better. I only have data with my sprint sim I can't send or receive texts or make or receive calls. I get a message cannot validate you account when trying to make a call. Everything works flawlessly with my Verizon sim.

Not to sound like an advertisement but I got my att model from bestbuy sim locked and used Cellunlocker to unlock it.
as of this moment, onlty att locks the sim. people are speculating if verizon will also do this, but its only att at the moment.
Another nod for Sprint being unlocked. I just put my N6 that I got 2 days after it hit the Sprint shelf on Tmobile and it rings for incoming calls again. Sprint has network issues and I got tired of missing calls and having cust service always start out with "factory reset your phone." My note 3 had the same issue on Sprint. 15 mins for Tmob to setup the account and put the sim in. 0$ and a better plan price to boot.

my experience with Verizon's version of the Galaxy Nexus left a bad taste in my mouth. I will be very very hard pressed to ever buy a verizon branded phone ever again. they do get my money though. That I don't mind paying for because I have signal everywhere I go and the legacy unlimited data plan.
The carrier locks aren't really a big deal in any case. $20 and you can get it unlocked at any number of cell unlocking sites.
Would rather it not be locked at all, but isn't that big of a deal....

As of today, if you are not under contract with the carrier that the phone is locked to, or owe them money due to an EIP, they have to unlock the phone.

AT&T are the only ones that are carrier locked, unless it was purchased outright or paid off, I would really double check with whoever you're buying it from and have them meet you at a sprint store to actually check everything out before you commit
