Hi, I don't know how various settings affect the results. However, I wish to be able to take excellent photos and videos under different conditions. Are there any good apps that take better photos and videos than the stock Camera App? I am using GB. Thanks

In photo 1, I do not know why the ceiling lights are like that.
I changed various settings but there was no improvement.
In some cases, the overall color of the room changed.
In photo 2, the room appeared to be dark but it was not.
I changed the flash to auto, on along with changing other
settings. The room still appeared to be dark.
In photo 3, again, that place was not dark. Setting the flash
to auto or on did not help.
In photo 4, everything including the room appears to be somewhat yellowish.
In reality, the wall is white and the pillows are gray.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not a professional. I don't know how various settings affect the results. By the time I have tested out various settings, things that I want to capture will have been gone.
ah now things are getting clearer . your pictures looks a little bit like something is wrong with the 'white balance' of your camera. so you can try different settings for the white balance, the default should be automatic (AWB). I'm not an photoexpert too, but maybe some one else can guide you further with this.
Thanks for pointing this out. I also tried white balance but it did not help. Perhaps I did not do it properly. Hoping somebody could provide some tips. Are the strong glares from the ceiling lights in photo 1 also caused by the white balance?

This effect on the ceiling lights is due to a hardware fault, there are no settings within the phone that can correct this. You can try, like me, and use photoshop. For me, its no problem because I have used photoshop for many years, but others are not so fortunate. This fault is well documented. Samsung know about it, yet have done nothing to correct it. The only way is to send the unit back to the retailer for a new unit. I tried three or four brand new units and they were all the same.
In general. The camera has limitations because of its size and proximity to other circuitry that may introduce noise etc. Its 8megapix with a tiny lens, so as is, I feel it does a pretty good job (apart from that pink dot that is). To get better pictures, consider post processing with photoshop. If that's not an option, and quite frankly I would not recommend purchasing it just for pics from any camphone, try the GIMP, its free and does an awful lot to enhance your pics. You can find the GIMP here www.gimp.org it will run on linux, windows and the Mac

Good question. I know the S2 does, and we all know about the Galaxy Note. I can see evidence of the problem on a slashgear.com presentation, and its that presentation that stopped me from going over to the S3. However, there are plenty of youtube tests where it seems pretty good. The S3 has only just been released, so it might be a while more before any issues become apparent. I think its one where you try before you buy. Personally, I'm not touching either the S3 or the 'Note until I have proof that the issue has been resolved.

In photo 1 was the lens clean? Might sound obvious but even the slightest bit of grease or diet can affect how sources of light spear in photos. Typically in any photo I take where I light bulb or something similar is in the picture if the lens was not completely clean I got a similar effect as in photo 1

Well, there must be a lot of pink dirt around. My crappy clam phone must have pink dirt repellent, because no matter how greasy the lens gets, pics from it don't have a pink dot. Neither does my DSLR when the uv filter gets filthy, or my specs come to that. Sorry, but the dirt bit on this issue is a red herring. The camera has a defect.
I use UCam. A lot of "pro" settings and also some cool. And... you can disable shutter sound.

i think you should send the device to service/repair, because i think this is an hardware issue. i saw a lot of pictures taken by the note (not only my own device) and they are al just fine with the standard settings.
I just noticed that there is a protective film covering the back camera. Probably Samsung put it there to protect the lens. Do you think this is the cause to all of my problems? Am I supposed to remove it? For the first few days after purchase (3 weeks ago), the Note took excellent photos. As for last week and the week before that, it depends. The thin protective film has been there right from the beginning. Let's say the protective film covering the lens caused the pink dot, how do you explain why the cafe in photos 2 and 3 appeared to be dark whereas in reality, it was not. Also, photo 4 looks yellowish overall.

Protective film would most likely create the effect on pic one. (which would be visible when a direct light source or reflection is in the frame.)
Pic two - could be a metering issue. Try changing the (cog wheel =>) metering setting and / or exposure level.
Yellowish photo is the result of incorrect "white balance". Change the white balance setting to incandescent.
I'm using both the stock ICS camera and camera zoom fx. On my previous phone the fx produced much better photos than the stock one. On my G - Note I don't see much difference.

Yes you are supposed to remove it. It does say so in the instructions that came with your phone. Check the camera after you have done this.

but the camera is giving me some problems,

it's normal for camera phone to have the lines when the condition is not enough light...
Well, not really when a device also has a flash.
My photos are crisp although it's 3MP without flash...
in short...don't expect too much from a camera phone then it will be alright.
for me it's normal because the features exist in every single camera phones (nokia models) i've owned when taken picture in poor light condition.
did it have flash when you took those photos?
if not, did you try to enable the flash so it would always flash?
i don't have lines, but the flash not always goes off when it should on automatic (with pocket cams too) but usually the pics still worked out fine
did you try fx camera?
Flash on will improve the picture... but not necessarily good enuf... for good low light photos, you need to be able to play with the camera exposure settings which most phones don't have... else, you an external light source
I had once a digital camera with the same effect in the photos.
It was a problem in the CCD sensor. It had to be repaired.
Well try and wiping the phone or Nand restoring to a back up and check if the problem still is there.

If its just inside, is the lighting fluorescent? Fluorescent lighting can cause these types of lines in photographs.

I am more concerned with the pink blob in the middle of your picture than the vertical lines LOL That pink blob is so annoying really wish they would fix this. It happens to everyone when taking pictures with a white background. Look at the wall, see how it is pink in the middle? That is a major problem with the camera on this phone for me.

It looks like you have some kind of clear cover over your camera lens. Do you have some kind of case on your phone?
Megapixel does not declare quality. Megapixel is a rating of picture size so changing the MP isn't going to make a difference. Try cleaning the camera lens with a Q-tip dabbed with rubbing alcohol.
I have never seen that on my pictures so it's not normal.

You should never use digital zoom on a phone camera the results are always terrible. Also I noticed my SGSII had a tough time auto focusing during videos. It was always freaking out trying to focus on the center object.
on HTC HD2 autofocus works well also zooming...
samsung optical software are very bad...

Look again. I Missed mine even with my spectales on. My nephew with young eyes spotted it.
I took the plastic off but i cant see the one you are refering too. I can see some sort of faint line around the lens but i dont think its suppose to come off

are you on 2.3.6? On my note (2.3.6), I just tried what you described (4x zoom and focus) and it had no trouble focusing.
This was indoors, with some light coming through the window blinds and it's almost sunset outside. So not really bright inside.
Granted, digital zoom is always (and I mean always) a bad call compared to taking an unzoomed photo and cropping/enlarging yourself, but at least the phone had no trouble focusing while zoomed in.

Its not just you. I have the same proplem now, but did not when i recieved it. The problem is just more aparent when zooming in the phone but you also see it unzoomed on the full photo on the PC. Auto focus just does not do its job and everything is really blurry. I think the problem only came up after a firmware upgrade, but i may be mistaken.
I already tried downgrading which did not work (maybe an even older version is required?) but then noticed the CSC code wrongly set to KOR. Stetting it to the for me correct DBT did not help either.
Anyone has this without having upgraded? Anyone solved it?<
Update: Looking back at made photos... If this is a software issue, it was not present in firmare KK9. I got a photo mentioning that firmware that was ok. However I have this version installed now, and focusing is not ok.
However i still see it possible that some changed from more recent firmwares like a camara firmware change made it in that was not reversed when installing the older version.
I'd appreciate if we could work together in narrowing down this problem by comparing situations.
My phone's auto-focus was working fine until I did the KKA firmware update. Now it is crap. I've been hoping for another update to fix it, bit no dice so far!
I have the same problem. I was considering sending my Note back or trying to find a camera replacement until I figured out my first few pix (pre update) were very good. I just hope an update comes soon because I'm working with a Mac at home and have failed to root or flash one of the updated roms.

The camera in the Galaxy Note has about 8 million photosensors. That defines the resolution you're going to get. Digital zoom only enlarges the pixels, interpolating, it's the same if you shoot without zoom and then enlarge the picture on the computer.
For me the camera on the Galaxy Note is pretty capable, better than a compact camera I had 6 years ago.
I don't know who you're responding to with the post of your image sample, but I cannot get anything close to this at the moment. Only in macro mode. The problems is auto focus, it has nothing to do with zoom.
I decided to ask for a replacement or repair from amazon.de and was in luck.
Due to an extended cristmas timeframe in which you can just send it back or get a replacement I just sent mine back and they sent me a new one right away.
The new one is fine now. The camera photos are really good.
Plus, now the screen on this new one is nicely even compared to the slightly uneven display brightness in some areas of the screen (especially on grey color) on my old one.
Also got the latest firmware on it without a problem.
So I'm really happy now
Im sure you guys know in photos you can touch the screen to set your focus point.
Digital zoom will just give you crap results, avoid this and just zoom and crop in editing which will give you a much better image.

I doubt it's a manufacturing issue. it's most likely a lens design problem.
From experience, I'm going to say this is normal. Had it on my Touch Pro 2, my HD2, my G2 and now my Nexus 4. Only noticeable in scenes with low light.

I never saw this on my OG ego, photon, or s3.
And until this thread I hadn't seen it on my n4. But since reading this thread I have noticed it on my low light photos
Actually, this is starting to look like lens flare. All but the OP's shots look to have a bright light source in front of the lens, out of frame.

In my opinion its definitely not lens flare. I've never experienced lens flare in the dark only. Also the pictures of the guys carpet and cat seem to also be in very low light with the same result so I'm not the only one experiencing this in very low lighting. Also my outdoor picture doesn't seem to produce it in the street shot where it would have been more likely to show lens flare (although that could mean it's still there but much less visible.)
I'm starting to think that more people are effected by this and just don't even realize it. I'm personally leaning towards the concept someone here already mentioned that this is a biproduct of the lens in low light.
For those of you not experiencing this issue please post your pictures of indoor shots with low light equivalent scenerio. Perhaps only some are effected by it or maybe you're just not noticing it. Like others have mentioned here... After reading this post that hue in the center became noticeable.
I hope it's an isolated issue but I'm starting to think it isn't.
Thanks again for all the feedback. I am very much into photography so it might take a fine eye to distinguish. Also if you decide to show a pic off try to use a lighter background so we can see the red/purple as some darker subject matter may mask it.

I am also seeing this in low light. To me this looks as if this is sadly normal. If not then a whole lotta fun trying to exchange for one that doesn't exhibit it.

You should call google and ask because on mine, never happens even in low light. Its most likely hardware flaw on your lens and google would let you RMA for it.

I get this in lower light too, and it happened on my SGS3 and SGS2 as well so i'd say it's normal. In night shots and daytime it isn't visible.
Yepp I definitely get it too. Also doesn't focus correctly at times, like my gnex did.
Anyways here are 2 pics I just took. My living room had no lighting (beside coming from kitchen), my daughter is right under a light and I can't see the red hue there.

Good question. Ill try again tonight when it's dark out (got huge windows in living room) with the same shot in different lighting scenarios.
Regarding those comparative shots in different lighting conditions...
I just did exactly that, taking a picture of my desk, very similar lighting conditions.
All settings Auto, Exposure 1/30 s: red center
All settings Auto, Exposure 1/40 s: no red center
Video preview shows the same issue when I point the camera similarly.
This is not a hardware issue (at least not in terms of the lenses or CMOS), it looks more like there's something wrong during picture processing. It might be a problem with the ISP, although I'm pretty baffled to see this happening for such a long time (it was already an issue on the HTC HD2 which was released in late 2009). If it's an ISP issue, I guess we're out of luck.
I mean it in a literal sense.
If you look at the image below, youll be able to see that its a bit blurry,
I've drawn 2 black lines in the image, notice that the top and the bottom is blurry and the center is focused.
It doesnt occur alot, but it does happen and sometimes even in videos.
Any help as to why? Perhaps 4.2.2 might fix this?
I think the DOF is so narrow because the lens has a wide aperture of F2.0 which helps in low light.

Can you explain what DOF is?
Is there anyway I could fix it? You think anyone else has this problem?
"depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image." - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field)
And I don't think it's a problem. It's just how the lens is made with a large aperture to allow more light in to the image sensor.
You could try to compensate this a bit by increasing the sharpness from the camera menu.
I'd be more concerned with the poor dynamic range shown in the top of the pic. ;O)

Well that sucks. One of the reasons I bought this phone was for the camera.
Do you know anyway I could fix this? or atleast minimize it?
The problem is when the image contains both dark and bright areas, if you focus on the bright, the dark areas will be underexposed and if you focus on the dark the bright areas will be overexposed, you need to find an area to focus on that will give you an average exposure for the entire image.
I have the same problem, but some photo`s are amazing and some are utter crap.
Try using hdr mode, it takes multiple images at different exposure levels and then integrates them into one photo, but you need to keep the phone very steady, hopefully HTC will fix this problem.

Mine does this as well. Easiest fix I've come across is just tapping on the screen in the area you want focused...it seems to hold focus better after the first time and the photos look a lot better.
Problem is, I generally forget about this until after the first picture is taken without it. So it's a process for sure.

Has anybody tried some other camera apps from the play store, maybe we can find one that exposes correctly, i wish the one had my nikon`s matrix metering

I bought this Camera Zoom FX app for £0.50p on sale that i never used, i think it`s about time i tried it.

Mine is the same way. Wasn't bashing the camera was just giving my first impression of the pic posted. I think the camera is excellent for a phone. Small sensor and tiny optics will only go so far. This device is fantastic as an overall package.

The sensor is great for a phone camera, but the software that does the exposure is very very poor or am i missing something???

Why are all you guys saying this is normal? Either you have defective phones or you don't know how to take pictures! ... The only time my One does this is when I use touch to focus on Macro mode. I have taken hundreds of pictures and no pictures look like yours unless I wanted them to.
Agreed. The picture in the OP looks like an issue with OIS, not depth of field.
If it was a one time thing then this thread doesn't need to exist. If it happens a lot the phone needs to be replaced.

Well its not a repetitive condition but occurs once in a while. Even in videos.
Try camera fv-5 from playstore. DSLR style camera app with multiple metering modes.

I do think it's a flaw in the camera software that exposure and focus can't be decoupled. I LOVE the shallow depth of field but can't use it property because touching-to-focus blows out highlights.

I've drawn 2 black lines in the image, notice that the top and the bottom is blurry and the center is focused.
It doesnt occur alot, but it does happen and sometimes even in videos.
Any help as to why? Perhaps 4.2.2 might fix this?

Most of these comments come from people who have no idea what they're talking about.
Your phone is perfect. Nothing wrong with it. All you did was tap to focus on the middle of the picture.
This did 2 things.
1. It will FOCUS on the center of the pic. Other areas will be blurred. Hence the term, focus. That's how cameras work.
2. The exposure was adjusted to where you focused it to. What does that mean?
If you focused on a light area the camera will adjust the exposure to compensate. What that means is if it's light, the camera will darken the overall image. Lights become darker, farms become darker.
If the photo is focused on a dark area, the camera will adjust the photo by making the dark area brighter and the bright areas, as a result, brighter. Which is why you have super white skies.
To fix it, go to the camera settings and I think select touch to capture. But to say fix means it's a problem.
It's not.
For landscapes, use landscape mode which will focus on the entire image and bot blur. Also you can tap on the area where you want adjusted, ie brighter or darker. Blur again is only cause you focused. Don't focus on landscapes.
Photographer here. Focus on this comment and not anyone who says your phone is messed up. This is why.
Take a look at my two attached photos. One I clicked on the sky and the other I clicked on the grass. Light then dark. Can you figure out which was which and see what happened to the photo?
Note that it was overcast and cloudy. There were NO BLUE SKIES. it was grey. So the sky wasnt killed by the camera
Btw don't always use Hdr. Don't. Its not a saving grace every time. If you shoot in the sun you're shooting in the sun. Photography rule #1: DON'T.
ALWAYS USE THE SCENES WHEN YOU CAN. WHICH IS WHY THEYTE THERE AND EXIST. SLRS HAVE THEM TOO FKR A REASON!
As for the lines, panorama? Did you move too fast? That's what happens when you do - camera can't stitch properly

The black lines on the image, I DREW to show where it gets blurred (not panaroma).
You're right, but when I focus on the center, all objects in the background should get blurred right? I mean thats how the focus works. You focus on a particular subject (lets assume in the foreground) the objects in background gets blurred.
If you see the image I uploaded (in the top line) the upper part of the tree is blurred and the lower part is focused.
It doesn't work like that right?
Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S4.
The front camera is producing blurred photos, almost as if they have been automatically edited/badly Photoshoped.
Before I capture a photo, the quality looks normal.
I've made sure the lens is clean and there is no plastic covering the lens. The same happens with Instagram... quality looks fine before capturing and then the same awful result afterwards.
Any help would be great!!

Here is an example.
This is on the highest possible resolution but the same thing happens with every option. The quality is absolutely fine before I capture the photo and then, as you can see, it's as if a soft blur filter is added.
Any ideas?

I think it's because the post procesing, which tries to reduce the noise for the cost of details (blury).
Try to take some photos in brighter enviroment.

That sounds about right.
I was trying out different apps and Snapchat captures what is on the screen and doesn't apply any after effect.
Have you got any ideas about how I can change some settings or something?

It's the camera. There's a definite lack of sharpness, and it happens on every ROM, so it's not software related.
Having the same issue.
Under good lighting, it's decent.
But under low light, or even under normal room lighting conditions, the image becomes grainy.
Even my previous S3 takes sharper and clearer images.

Exactly. I just upgraded from S2 and never had these problems. My software has just updated but with no effect.
S4 Front camera, STRANGE.

I was having problems with my S4 trying to make an ordinarily phone call. The phone seamed sluggish and my voice did not go through once I was connected. So, I switched to hangouts. I made a video call so I was expecting to see myself in the small picture on my screen. I did see a zoomed picture in good quality? Better quality I ever had seen before! I was surprised to see a good quality zoomed picture under poor light conditions. Since I am a computer guy I realized that something is fishy so I looked for an appropriate forum to put this story in.
My question is since you are talking about a suspected software filter. Are we without our knowing it have better camera performance than we the user are allowed to use? I do not buy the ROM explanation of the problem.

S4 Front camera, STRANGE.
Hi.
I had an encounter with something, well, alarming.
I had some problems making an ordinary phone call, sluggish phone, so I switched to hangouts instead.
I made a video call to my friend. For some reason the phone had not stopped being funny. In the small picture, the one of me, I saw something I never had seen before. Instead of the expected streamed image of me I had a zoomed in version in surprisingly good quality! I could see holding my phone, S4, at 30 to 40 cm distance my mouth covering the with of the image.
Question: I looked for an appropriate forum and thread before posting. Since you are here talking about the poor picture quality of the front camera being manipulated by a software filter you might be intrigued like me about this observation I had by chance stumbled up on.
My question is whether the cameras on our phones have capabilities we are not aware of?
