Android File Transfer GS3 - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Was wondering about everyone's thoughts about this new feature. Personally I think it's crap. I can't view/read ANY files from the sd cards unless I FIRST transfer them to my mac...GAY! Why can't we just mount the SD cards like the GS2???

Can you please explain because I'm having this issue managing files from the sd

Basically, the mac tells me I have to transfer a file to the mac to view it....which sucks. With phones like the Galaxy S2, I was able to plug in and mount the sd cards and it would act like any other USB mass storage external memory drive.

I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "mac". This issue is KILLING me. I can't even find my sd card unless I use the built I file manager

It's due to the way that Ice Cream Sandwich handles the Memory. It's always live in the system. The only way to access the Memory is through MTP. There is an advantage of using such because it means that if your phone is formatted ext4 (speed increases if I am not mistaken) you can take advantage of that and still access the data. Both Windows and Linux support MTP, unfortunately Apple has not implemented such even though devices are starting to use MTP more these days.
For Further reading go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
From reading the site, there is a 3rd party implementation, not sure how up to date it is, but you might be able to make it work.
http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/ check that out to see if you can enable MTP on your mac which would reduce the need for Android File Transfer.
Also it has been a while since I have used Mac but you might be able to use these instructions to install a Ubuntu supported MTP software on your mac through X11 (allows you to run linux software on your mac) http://www.humans-enabled.com/2011/12/how-to-fix-samsung-galaxy-nexus-mtp.html
One final link.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355913

Thanks very much. I'm looking into it now

Ok.. I am using the Android File Transfer program and I can copy individual files to/from my GS3 BUT I cannot create folders for some reason. Even with the +Folder button. The error message reads: "Could not create folder. Try reconnecting or restarting your device." (Obviously I have done both multiple times.
Any thoughts?

on my PC it shows up as a portable media device and allows me to access both internal and SD memory
i did install the galaxy s3 drivers found on the rooting guides though

I can't get Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 running CM9 (or CM10, for that matter), either using MTP or using the camera setting. This is really annoying. Anyone know of a way to get it to work? I really wish that USB mounting still worked, so I wouldn't be required to use client software.

It works fine on my mac at work and I have a 5 year old macbook pro. It's not all that bad. I just use it to transfer files when I'm at work.

[Q] Connect via USB as Mass Storage Device

Is there a way to connect the TF101 to my computer as a mass storage device? Right now I end up with "Transformer TF101" as a portable media player in My Computer - It would be much more helpful to get the behaviour of my smartphone (just looks like another drive connected to coputer).
You know, I was wondering the same thing. I have been annoyed with having to move information to the tablet then to the meida storage device. Don't ask about my lack of an SD card reader. I had one that worked and now it appears like it doesn't.
Regardless this is is something I was hoping for. Moving information to the SD card, w/o a reader, shouldn't really be a two transfer process.
Anyone been able to resolve this issue? My Win7 laptop sees the TF like a USB drive but my WinXP desktop can't direct copy/paste with the TF.
Hi anyone sort this? My Win7 PC always sees it as a media player and never as mass storage this really cripples data transfer rates, really would like some help.
I need to test this, but maybe multi mount from the market will do the trick.

Honeycomb uses the MTP protocol rather than USB mass storage. It does this to avoid having to kludge apps2sd as they have in phone versions of Android.
To the poster with XP, XP doesn't support MTP out of the box but it is added with Windows Media Player 9+.

Dsve
So outside of rooting is there no way to get mass storage on a windows 7 pc?

I'd seen mention of it being done on xoom's with rooting but didn't look into it deeply so that was the reason for wording it that way. Really sucks that wifi explorer is a faster transfer method than plugging into usb.
use wifi explorer, available in the market. you can view the contents of your SD card in the browser of your computer, upload, download, change folders etc. Saves you the hassle of using a cable as well.

File transfer options (USB and WiFi)

This is a list of all the options I tried (in chronological order) to solve my file transfer issues with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The last option is the most stable one and until either Samsung or Android give us something usable I'll keep using it. Its a WiFi solution, so its slow in comparison to a USB solution.
Kies Software: Simply does not work for me since it requieres the USB drivers to be installed and for some reason they will not install correctly in my laptop.
Kies via Wi-Fi (Settings/Wireless and networks/Kies via Wi-Fi, it requires the Kies software): It says that the SIM card was not detected... There's obviously something really wrong with that Kies app because I have a WiFi only tablet...
Kies App: Basically creates a server in your tab that you can access through your browser. It works but if you need to transfer several GB's of music files organized in folders... you're going to have issues with it... Plus its really unstable.
SwiFTP FTP Server: Basically creates an FTP server in your tablet that give you access to the whole disk. It works with any FTP client in your computer. I use FileZilla. Its realy stable and you can simply drag and drop all your files to your FTP client. Also, it doesnt interfere with the use of the table. So you can use it while the files transfer. There's more options for FTP servers in the market but this one works, so why bother...
I hope this thread help you guys!

had similar problems and removed KIES and installed Airdroid on my tablet and works great!
kies air is not an option when you have to transfer more than a couple of files.
I only found the option to transfer one at a t ime through the web interface.
so it is extremely time consuming to do 1 at a time...
The best option i found so far, was the como with the adaptor for usb sticks and flash cards.
I got it on ebay for about 25$ and i been using it all the time since then.
It is VERY fast (depending on your usb stick as well) but with a trancent stick, i get about 10~15 secs for 1GB of mp3s.
So far it is the best way i found to transfer files.
P.S. I believe it is a lot faster than using the cable usb connection with the included charge/data cable.

USB MTP connection

Does N7 only have single partition and that's why there is no USB mass stroage connection option and have MTP instead? Does this also mean when flash a custom rom, the wipe option will also wipe the entire "internal storage" folder?
My main questions is actually about the MTP connection with limited access. For example, I have GTA game installed but after connected via MTP, under andoid/data I don't see the com.rockstar.gta3 folder along with many other folders. If I open up any file browser on N7, I see all the folders showing but In my windows 7, I only see 9 app folders. Is there a permission setting somewhere so I can gain access to see all the files?

yes but usb is allot faster then wifi, so transferring movies and backups sucks via wifi.
I'm trying to copy across Titanium Backup files but only 2 files will transfer. My Nexus 7 is showing up as a Portable Media Player and using MTP. I don't want to use this method. Is there a way to see my Nexus 7 as a USB Mass Storage Device? I have tried the PTP although that limits even more files to view.
With the limited space on offer for the Nexus 7 I don't like being limited in what I can and can't transfer from it. I don't want to use WiFi either, it simply isn't as fast as USB and I don't want to have to upload all my information to DropBox or a cloud in general
Wait until you try to put a lot of photos on the Nexus 7 that must retain their timestamps. Due to the filesystem used and MTP all the timestamps get changed to when the copy procedure occurred. My Nexus 7 is going back because of this major design flaw.

USB Mass Storage (SGS3 Easy UMS)

Our tablet lacks the USB Mass Storage capability, also Note 2 lacks this also.

How is this better than MTP? I connect my Note and it shows up - I double click on it and it shows me a drive for the internal and external storage and you can drag file in and out of them. The only two issues are that when you copy some kinds of media, you get asked if you want to convert it - and on the Note, it runs an actual app to do the MTP. It's odd because other Android devices don't do that (even the Samsung Nexus doesn't).

If you use other OSes then Windows you will notice the difference, it does not work reliable on Linux and Mac. MTP is slow , with UMS i get something about 20MB/s read/write. Also, if you have to modify a file then that file will first be downloaded locally on your PC, modified and the reuploaded instead of modify it on the phone. This is how MTP works.
I have used the app 10 times by now, no issues at all. I also checked the sd card with scan disk on win7, no corruption !
By the way, there's a good technical reason why modern Android devices don't do USB Mass Storage.
USB Mass Storage operates on an *entire partition* and needs *exclusive* access to that partition. So the phone needs to be able to totally *un-mount* the partition (stop using it entirely) which is to be mounted as USB Mass Storage.
Older devices like my Samsung Galaxy S2 had the built-in storage separately partitioned. The downside to this, however, was that app storage was on a small, limited partition so even though the phone had 16GB, apps were limited to a 2GB (or so) partition.
New devices have all data on one partition so the app data can expand as far as it needs to into your storage space, but it means that it's no longer possible to mount it over USB Mass Storage as you can no longer get exclusive access to a partition.

You are right about internal storage, but , this app only exports the External SD Card, which is formtated as FAT32 or ExFat. The app first unmounts the card from phone, export it through USB, then with the middle button, when you are done on PC (end ejected the card), will mount it right back.
This way you could check the SD card on the PC, copy large files very fast, directly modify files, works on linux and mac !

Another weakness in MTP is that if you are in a locked down environment with no admin/privileges to install devices MTP will not be detected. (You'll get the same nonsense with iOS as well)
has anyone been able to get this working with a ps3. I would like to be able to transfer things to my ps3.
So, no method exists that would allow the Note 10.1 to connect as UMS to Windows XP? and/or without the use of the inserted MicroSD?
I installed KIES but it tried to install like 3 versions of Net Framework and other garbage, so I removed it. There is no way I will use the KIES. I tried to use the driver that Kies installed along with the SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe but no luck. I can't believe this is an issue.
I'm a bit of a novice with tablets/android and have searched a long time for a solution with no luck.
It only export the external sd card through UMS, the internal one it is impossible. For me, it works on XP x64 just fine.
Has anyone tried multi mount, i use it on my galaxy s to listen to music while i am mounted to the pc, works well but i think it a bit buggy cause i can't get my external sd card to mount but i don't know if that the rom cause it worked well on the previous rom, try it out multi mount

Yes you can.
If your using Vista+ (and not a N or KN edition of Windows), you should just be able to plug the Nexus 10 to the computer and transfer files via MTP.
If that doesn't just "work":
- You have a N or KN edition of Windows and don't have the media pack installed
- MTP is either removed or disabled
- Old drivers from ADB are possibly interfering (uninstall them, replug device, should work)
No idea what to do on XP or any other OS though.
I would use es file explorer.

Yeah but stock N10 doesn't allow that, no? Really strange. It's okay not to have SD slot, but why does Google block USB OTG?
I havent tried but i imagine its possible whether its stock or not i dont know sorry. You can read from usbs as stock, just install Nexus Media Importer, so cameras could maybe be used with this, phones may get a bit trickier.
look at es file explorer. a must for every android user.
it lets you see network lan shares, your dropbox, skydrive, box, gdrive etc etc - with same ease as your device's local storage.
so you can export the share from your desktop where the files are and copy them on your device from that network share.
or, on your desktop, upload the files to your favorite cloud storage and do the same. have a habit of copying important files to the cloud, just in case your desktop crashes. outside of backing then up like that, you now could access then from anywhere using your mobile devices.
encrypt important stuff.

get "software data cable" from market
then you can use any FTP client and send files
no cables. profit
benefit of using this option instead of cloud services like dropbox:
say you have a 1gig file, u have to upload that 1 gig to dropbox, then download that 1 gig from the phone. this way you only send file one time
of course if you only using small files then no benefit
but if u have 50 small files in one folder you can send 1 folder with all the files, instead of 50 individual exports from dropbox or other could service

I just starting to get familiar with my Nexus 10 16GB tablet. I have an Android phone and a Kindle fire so I've had some experience with transferring files to my devices. When I plug my N10 into my Win7 PC, it shows as a "Portable Device", not a Hard Drive so went I attempt to eject it, that device doesn't show up as a choice to eject. I have no other choice but to 'pull the plug',something I'd uncomfortable with.
Nevertheless, I can double-click into the 'internal storage' and see some of the folders. When I attempt to create a new folder (to attempt some organization), I can create a 'New Folder', but I can't rename it to anything. This is very different from my experience with my Android phone and Kindle Fire.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?
Search google play Airdroid ,awesome app
