[Sprint] Swype Beta keyboard for SGS3 is Sweet! - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Well, I wanted to share this for anyone that , like me, didn't think Samsung did that great a job with the keyboard on the GS3. I just downloaded the Swype Beta for our phone and played with it for a while..It's really NICE. Much better imho than that frustrating thing they used in our phones! I don't know what happened, but after using the Samsung KB for a while I started getting really frustrated. Not sure what the heck happened to my old Swype KB? Hell, that's one of the biggest reasons I was sold on my OG Epic4G! It was the closest thing to a perfect KB that I had ever found. Now I'm not saying this is perfect, but I think it's a LOT better and it's free!
Anyways, for those that may not know how, just go to the Swype site, log in or register, and they'll email you a link that you'll open with your phone. Then just follow the instructions from there. Not sure if you have to be rooted or not (I AM). It installed without even a question on my phone. Then go into you Settings>Language and Input, check the Swype keyboard if not already checked and (this is IMPORTANT) in the "Default " space make sure you select - Swype keyboard. :victory:

been using Swype beta keyboard since i got the phone. Default Samsung keyboard is awful in my opinion

Try SwiftKey 3 and you will never look back. Especially if you are a fast typer and write in more than one language. The predictions and dictionaries rock.

yep, swiftkey 3 is epic.
It's been my keyboard for awhile now.

I've been trying to download and install swype beta for a while now but it keeps saying there's a connection error or something of that sort. I've been making do with SwiftKey 3 but I really want swype.

Is it similar to the way Swype works, I'll try it, thanks:good:?

Swiftkey is a hunt and peck keyboard with strong prediction, so no, not at all like Swype.
Count me in the group that likes swype more. One of the first things I installed on the phone.

That's just it, swiftkey requires pecking keys the old way. Since I first realized that not lifting your finger during a word and not having to hit space after it, I can't use a regular keyboard in any fashion of the same speed times. I do realize that Swiftkey has a great lead on the next word, but I prefer not having to hope that it knows what I'm going to say and lift my finger up to select it's guessed word at top when it gets it right. It is just a distraction that adds to the time it takes to type out what I want to say.
Sticking with Swype myself for the foreseeable future.
-Xont!c

I still prefer swiftkey, the prediction feature make typing so fast and easy. I rarely have to type a whole word.

Yeah. I love Swype. The keyboard that comes on this thing sucks. They tried to add the Swype-ing feature but failed big time.

I've been using AnySoftKeyboard for a while now. It sounds similar to swiftkey 3. I'll have to try swiftkey as having a german keyboard layout is a must for me.

not being able to quickly add words to dictionary on stock was the major killer for me, swype beta all the way!

Swype is awesome in that you can type very fast with just one hand.
I suppose that this is especially important for those do sexting:fingers-crossed:

Samsung has done a good job of accepting/copying mods and features that we've been building into their devices these last couple of years. They've also knocked off some services. While Swype was pre-included, now Samsung has made their own 'swype' keyboard. But no, it's not as good, by far.
Although out of all of the upgrades, I'm confused how we went from Thinkfree Office, to Polaris Office, to Polaris Viewer. I don't know about you gents, but I've removed the viewer crap and ported my old Polaris 3 and its 2 libraries. Works fine for me. :good:

Yup. I'm using SwiftKey 3. I hate Swype.

hmmm i tried both swype and swiftkey but idk i feel swype is so much better. A lot faster and after like 10 mins it learns you. It has learned every i do perfectly . Especially since i type random stuff lot and weird words like mostest and fugly and weird ****. Swiftkey is..idk just too much pecking

I used touchpal on my epic. Was far better than the swype that came with it. Very good for typing and swiping and has good predictions. Haven't installed a new keyboard on this yet. May try the new swype to see how it has improved since then.

I moved away from Swype some time ago, to Swiftkey, now the V3. It is excellent.
But, I decided to try the Swype beta, and I am definitely sold.
Even though Swiftkey is great at predicting, the fact is that you still have to take the fraction of a second to watch the predictions, and select it.
As an example with Swype 4 beta, I can swype over all the chars for my entire gmail name, which is my first [email protected] and Swype fills it in. Much better than in the past. Now, in that particular example, Swiftkey would likely be faster, because you learn that with poking the right first few keys, it will be in the prediciton, and you can click it.
Both are excellent, and maybe ultimately it is just personal preference. In my case, I have enough trouble hitting the right keys, and find Swype to be faster for me.

Swype

Hi guys, been a few months, but I'm back with a question.
Been using the swype beta for my hero and the trial period just expired today and won't let me use it anymore (unless I change the date on my phone - you know that old trick)
is there a place where I can get a newer beta ? I don't want to keep setting the date back.
Thanks.
Trial period expired???
Working perfectly fine over here.
which version are you using ? Swype's website says its a 3 month trial
i'm using version 1.16.12.5228
Yeah I've got the same issue. Really come to like Swype so really want a solution!
Same problem here... got the expiration message yesterday.
Is there any solution to this other than waiting for an official Hero release from Swype?
My phone is much less usable without it.
Have you given Shapewriter Keyboard a try? It is very comparable to Swype.
I personally like it more than Swype.

Yeah, I'm using Shapewriter now. It's okay, but I prefer Swype.
I like how in Swype the keyboard takes up less space on the screen, and I like the use of a pop-up to handle ambiguous traces.
SlideIT
Hi
I use SlideIT.
Really good, and many language packs.
BR.
MKrogh
Tried out both SlideIT and Shapewriter and both pale in comparison IMHO.
Anywho I found a link that works (and it won't let me post it as I'm a new user!). It's on the droid-eris.com forums, with the title "Swype Trial Period Ends!!!!!!!!!!" Good luck finding it.
had the same problem... this worked
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7214799/com.swype.android.inputmethod.v1.25.16.5612.hvga.apk
how do i delete this post :S sorryy...
I'm glad I've found this post, I've used others like SlideIT and Shapewriter, and nothing compares to the speed or accuracy as Swype.
I liked SlideIT for it's accuracy compared to Shapewriter, but the Shapewriter keyboard was was nicer.
Swype blows them both out of the water, my beta trial ended too and I've been searching the past few days for a fix. Thanks for posting this.
I wonder how long until conventional keyboards are replaced with software like this, it's simply amazing.
I mean even if somebody could write software like this for an analog keyboard, it would help disabled and people with only one hand or arm to be able to type as fast as anybody else by sliding their fingers accross the keys.
After using Swype, texting has never been the same for me, and it's hard to go back to conventional methods.
The swype apk has been in the Nexus One section for quite some time now. If you've really been searching for a few days it's a shock you hadn't found it yet.
not a shock considering I only stick in the GSM hero section and don't venture off to other phone forums. thanks for the tip though.
Thanks! Swype seems great, there are some stuff i miss in SlideIT.
But is it possible to get Swype in swedish, otherwise it's pretty useless for me right now.
hi all, i am newbie to this android stuff..
i have search info about swype, that it's so fantastic to use keyboard in swype way.. So, i have download and installed it from link above.. What i want to ask is, why I can't change the keyboard input method to swype on my phone? Is there any phone requirement for swype? Like must running eclair first?
Btw, my phone is HTC Hero with donut rooted.
Same. I've installed it but can't work out how to use it.

New Swype Version
Heya all
Discovered this Swype version hiding in the depths of the internet It hasn't expired and doesn't look like its going to!
So I've attached it all for you guys!
Enjoy!
Is it multilingual?

Swype beta just expired.

This is getting very annoying, anyone have this problem just now??
Yeah, well they told us it would expire a couple weeks ago and made the latest beta available for download.

Yep it sucks. I had to buy Ultra-Keyboard as a replacement and while it has more options I just don't like it as much. Looking forward to when Swype is released.
agree, any idea when they are going to release it officially to the market???
i simply cannot function/sms effective using the stock keyboard.
Yes its very annoying, had a hacked version and worked fine. Did enroll in beta, and it stops working now and then. uninstall and down load again from swype installer
Same here with the on again off again swype ****. Got annoyed and bought the swiftkey kb when it was released from beta. I have to admit, being an avid swype user for a good 2 months, trying multi-touch kb's and such, I have to admit I personally like swiftkey a bit better. Seems to be better to predict words better when typing.
kpjimmy, how long did it take for you to get use to SwiftKey? I've tried it for a little bit like a text or two and found that I still prefer Swype. Then again I'm not a big fan of using the word predict. No idea why it should make my life more simple.
Good thing I signed up for the Swype Beta earlier so I keep getting up dates. I can't imagine not using it. I know some people using SlideIT and Shapewriter since they didn't get on the Swype Beta in time. They seem to like it.
I've gotten used to Ultra KB after swype. I'll wait for the official release until then.

Well personally, when I type, I mistype some of the times and when that happens, instead of erasing/correcting by backspacing my mistakes, the swiftkey app predicts the words I would most use in my sentence. I admit, I am not a frequent texter but I do use the kb to type in passwords (of course do not predict), but the userID's I use are remembered, which is a plus for me.
Really it is what you are used to and comfortable with. It took me only about 3 days to get used to it and for a buck I think it was well worth the money. Dont get me wrong, swype is cool, even my wife likes it and she's no teckkie. LOL. For me swype got old when I was using it lately and to me, loses the sense of touch-typing and at times, I forget what the heck I was intending to type/swype. Add that to the on again off again swype which bugged the **** out of me to go out and find a kb that actually worked. I even liked the multi type kb that eVil has in his roms lol.
I'm about over Swype. The new version's word guessing feature is so screwed up, I end up having to correctly probably 80% of the words I type on it. Swype has gone from a pleasurable experience to a frustrating experience. Boo.
This guy is hosting cracked versions w/o beta expire stuff.
Installed it and works well...Installing from some random guy is kind of sketchy though as who know if theres not a key logger bundled with it

You may want to edit your post and remove that link.
Warez, and the propagation of warez, is against the rules of XDA.
Just so you know, Swype Inc. has requested that their product not be distributed, making it warez in the eyes of XDA.
Thanks for heads up, removed.

New swype not accurate

Anyone noticed that swype new version 2.4.44 is not accurate as the old one ? Please share your experience with new swype

I thought it was just me having ot get used to swype again after the phone was getting repaired for 2 weeks, but I've noticed the same thing. I spell out a word and it comes up with its usual swype random jibberish I've learned to know and love, but now it's done way more often then before.
Annoyed with the new version too, more buggy to my idea; takes longer and mostly suggestions with the bigger words..
Is the issue in froyo version?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah I find that I am making a lot of errors with this version (xxJPK).
I am thinking about uninstalling and installing the version directly from Swype...
Swype like a lot of phones keyboard that suggest words "learn" you writing, it means that over time the phone will choose a word instead of an other because he know that you used more this word that the other

yeah, i am heavily enjoying it. i have never had swype on either of my droids so its a big upgrade for me. feels and works awesome im amazed at how well it recognizes the right word even when my fat fingers hit the wrong letter haha.
After trying swype on the galaxy tab I had to try it on my inc. I am liking it so far. Pretty neat really.
So on two phones I'm using this beta, officially signed up for it, installed through the official installer, all that.
After a re-boot on one phone swype just ceases to function, it acts like it's expired. An uninstall/reinstall fixes it but very annoying.
On the other phone, I get an error message saying it was designed for a different device and some functions won't work, and the primary function that doesn't work is... swyping the words. Uninstall/reinstall fixes the problem.
What the hell? Using unauthorized versions in the last 6 months it's worked perfectly, now using an official beta, trying to go legit, it doesn't work. Both phones using the SkyRaider 3.3 ROM (exact same configuration on both, both phones are launch date phones).

Not sure what that could be from. I have been on a lot of roms in the past 48 hours SkyRaider not being one though got stuck on CM 6.1 and in love lol. Maybe there is soemthing new in the code that messes things up? I dont know about code unfortunately but i have NO problems so far. Wish i could be of more help
Easier fix for the not working after reboot: long press in a text field, change the input thing from swype to something else, then change it back to swype. Should fix it.

I had issues with Swype not detecting the occasional, uh, swype? Switched back to the default keyboard. Now using IncredibleGingerbread and the multitouch keyboard is better than Swype by far. Fast and accurate.
mine gets stuck every now and then and I have to just go back to stock and back to swype.
Currently, I think swype is amazingly accurate. I feel like I'm just scribbling on the keypad. I'm never going back.

Try changing keyboards then back to swype. This solves the problem for me.
Btw is there anyway to backup the user dictionary between installs?

Also i've always used the standard keyboard and I type with my thumbs. I am finding it rather hard to swype with my thumbs.
Do you guys use your thumbs or index fingers? Also any suggestions for someone converting from stock to swype to get my adjusted quicker and be able to use it more naturally other than just time?

Type very fast with all 10 fingers and pretty fast with two thumbs on the Dinc. But using this Swype for the last two days it's a struggle and have only been able to use my right thumb. Do seem to be getting better all the time though.
Was a major PITA to get it to work with Better Keyboard for some reason.

[SWYPE][INFO]Swype v3 beta

FYI for all you Xoom owners. You MUST be completely stock to get this update. Apparently running the ☢ BigDX Xoom|Zoom Theme ☢ 3G & Wifi Only ☢ will send data that the Swype servers don't understand.
"There was a data error, likely due to a bad network connection. Please try again."
So you just need to revert completely to stock then run the installer and it will go by without a hitch!
Your Welcome.
Hi, thanks for your post but i dont have installed this app what you said.
Go back to stock isn't it worth for swype...!
Finally swype on xoom! Bout time!
Ummmm your a little late. I already posted this and the link about it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122823
Second you do NOT have to be stock to install Swype 3.0 on your Xoom. I know cuz I did it.
Please search before you make a post. Also make sure you know what your talking about before you give people the wrong information.
I use Swype as my main keyboard for my Xoom, I don't think it is worth going back to stock if you really like the theme or rom. It's great but it has a ton of glitches. I am mainly using it as my main keyboard to help beta test. I think it will be worth it when they update it at least once.

I had been using Swype since last fall on a Nexus 1 and loved it... thought it would be a great improvement for the Xoom, but I really dont find it helpful... doesnt seem as slick as the smartphone version. If trying to type like a real keyboard it tries to connect the dots, and does so unsuccessfully. Even when its shrunken down to the smaller GUI its still not great as a 'swype' keyboard. The auto suggest is consistently wrong and the keyboard seems to struggle with using the .com button.
I went back to stock keyboard...which works well as a qwerty keyboard.
On the Swype forums, they've stated if you're running the Tiamat Rom it can cause issues with the communication between the device and the servers.
They were trying to reach out to BRD last I read.
