Just dropped my S III - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Had the phone on my lap on some concrete stairs, got up and it flew down 3-4 steps. I'm so freaking pissed off now! The phone has some pretty nasty chips on the sides and a nice one on the back battery door.
Is there any chance I could somehow replace it with a new one from AT&T? Possibly buy insurance over the phone and exchange it for a new model? Man this sucks. :crying:

I could be wrong, but every time I've bought a new phone in the last couple years they've told me "And you have 30 days to add insurance to the phone from the date of purchase" I would call 611 tomorrow and try to add insurance to the phone to see what happens.

Thanks. What company does the insurance for AT&T? Since the phone isn't even out yet would it take a while for it to get replaced?

Definitely! I usually never drop my phones but man, this plastic on the GS III is super delicate. That stuff chips off like no tomorrow. :crying:

I do kinda wanna point out that AT&T's insurance specifically doesn't cover accidents and has ridiculous $199 deductible. I would try for Zagg's or Squaretrade's warranties.

If it doesn't cover accidents then what the hell does it cover? Lol
Since the phone just came out would those companies even be able to replace the phone?

Listen up dude this is so very important the difference between getting insurance or not do not i repeat do not call in and tell them your phone is broken or your sol you call in add insurance and in a few days call back for a replacement i used to work for att and do exactly what i said or your not considered covered be very careful what you say to them i mean it

Should I order the insurance through AT&T? From what I've heard their insurance plans are a little shady.

Oh, I will be damned. They changed it since I last sold AT&T phones.

At&t insurance specifically covers "accidental physical or liquid damage and lost or stolen"
Like someone else mentioned, don't tell them you dropped your phone when you call in to add it, and don't file a claim till at least a few more days.
Honestly, don't even file a claim if a case can cover the damages and save your 200 in case something really bad happens. Lol

You're SOL bro, its a 199 deductible cuz the S3 is a tier 3 phone according to their insurance if it is covered, and you won't be gettin an S3 back as the replacement since the phone just came out...ATT doesnt take care of the insurance claims its handled by a 3rd party that you can bet doesnt have the S3; the insurance company will replace your phone with whatever comprable phone they have at the time you make your claim if they don't have your specific phone available, you could add Square Trade but its 69.99 for 1 year and its a 50 dollar accidental dmg deductible I believe..besides that your only option currently and the by far the least expensive get a TPU case that covers the whole phone. lastly you could wait a few weeks and buy a new housing for the phone off ebay along with a new battery cover that should cost 30-80 bux...let this be a lesson to those who say I will never get a case...accidents happen at anytime.

I see this so many times. I don't know why people carry a smartphone without any case to protect it and get “pissed" when it falls and gets damaged. Thats what happens when a phone falls on the ground without protection. It either breaks or gets scratched/damaged.
lol And every time they when they don't have insurance they want to run and try to add it. To somehow replace what THEY messed up. What a joke. I have insurance and still put my devices in protective cases.

I never bought insurance, case, or skin protector for my captivate. I dropped it a few times on concrete, carpet, hard floors... it has tiny scratches on its side and still works. Getting the phone in and out of your pocket is much easier without a case; although, I don't think I'd be as much of a risk taker with my GS3 as it looks much more delicate!

I love that a lot of the posts are telling OP to commit fraud. You didn't have insurance, you damaged your phone, you are responsible. Don't go buy insurance, pretend like nothing is wrong, then some days later make a claim. Own up to your mistake, and take the hit, instead of making everyone else paying for insurance cover your mistake. Go buy a case, fix your phone, and buy insurance if you're still worried you might break it again.
This is one of many reasons insurance (not just for phones) is so high.

A typical company wouldn't hesitate to backstab customers if it means higher profits. These companies (AT&T, Verizon, insurance companies etc) charge so much for their services that it's truly unfair to the consumer. Have you seen Verizon's new Internet prices? Truly insane. I'd rather look out for myself than a company's best interest.

EVO 4G screen cracked, no insurance, what are my options?

My 1 yr old just grabbed my phone off my desk and threw it on the tile kitchen floor.
The screen is now shattered, but still in place and still functioning.
I have no insurance.

I am so paranoid I bought the Radio Shack insurance AND the monthly insurance from Sprint. I am really sorry you are having this problem... I'm not really sure how you can fix it at this point. Maybe if you ordered one off the internet, MacGuyvered the screens (switch them) and then return the one you got on the internet... but that is very dishonest, not to mention difficult.
I had a similar situation, I called tm and made sure the person sounded nice and friendly. If they sounded like they hated their job I hung up. Usually if a guy thats polite answers that would be the best choice.
Now, just aks him/her if you can add the insurance to your phone. If they say its to late ask them what are your options because you want the insurance.
I was able to get hem to BACK date my purchse date and they added the insurance for me.
Add the TEP protection to your plan, wait a month and file a claim...not sure if you'll have to pay the deductible however that's one way

Maybe try buying the OEM HD2 screen off of ebay and seeing if you can drop it in? Lol that's what I'd do...
If you paid by credit card, ie AMEX, you could file a claim through them possibly. Most credit cards automatically extend your warranty by one year.

That wouldn't work since the HD2 screen doesn't have the capacitive buttons. Call HTC and byte the bullet.
1. If you bought with AMEX, you get 90 days of accidental warranty and +1 year of extended warranty.
2. Commit insurance fraud, sign up for Sprint TEP, file a claim after your 30 day return period is up.
3. Buy a replacement Evo/possibly HD2 screen off ebay/net.
I seem to remember from the teardown pix that the buttons are a different component altogether and that the lcds are identical. Also it's probably only that glass that is shattered right? The glass screen is separate from the actual lcd underneath.
Thanks for all the great advice, it will definitely come in handy when I stop crying and set out to resolve this
I think with Sprint total protection, you can purchase insurance within 30 days of receiving your phone. Since the EVO is in its third week, you should be able to purchase. Just do it through the website. It's only $7.

Call the credit card that you used to buy the phone, if you used one. I had an iPhone replaced for free once after I dropped it on concrete. Good Luck.

Check with Sprint, I know At&t gives you 30days to enroll in the insurance from the time of purchase.
This is why I keep my 1 year-old far, far away from my EVO.

Fess up.
I never buy insurance on anything under $1000. If it breaks I will bow my head in disgust. Then I will go buy one at full price.
6 years of smart phones with no insurance x $7/mo x 12mo/yr = $504 saved.
Hopefully I didn't curse myself.

Put in Microwawe
You have 1 year warranty just put in microwave for 5 sec it will fry the board and most likely screen. No more then 5 sec. You have 1 year warranty take it to the store and say what the hell its not working.
Get TEP and pay the $100 deductible for accidental damage. Best option you have!

cracked evo screen! ha

dropped my phone from like 3 feet and this is what happened. luckily there is a place here in sac that can replace the glass for $100. i called in and they have the part. hopefully its legit.
saw the same thing happen last night. Kid told me today that sprint insurance doesn't cover screens anymore. Said they won't even look at an EVO if the screen is cracked. Is that true?
The Sprint store here doesn't cover glass screens. Best Buy has their insurance policy and they will cover cracked screens though. My friend just dropped his Evo and it cracked the screen, when he had someone repair it they accidentally punctured the LCD with a piece of the broken glass. He now has a fairly dead Evo, but the guy is willing to replace the parts next week when he gets them in.
It honestly is very easy to repair the digitizer and the LCD screen (Depending on which one you need).
I knew fairly nothing about the phone, I did a little research and bought the "Type 1" LCD screen for the HTC Evo. The connector was too small so I did more searching, I eventually found the right screen at GlobalPartsDirect. (Search google).
It has the Wide Connector that you'll need if you have one of the HDW004/3. I personally would open up the back of the phone and check the connector myself, If i were you.
It's an easy fix, only question, do you have the money to buy two from globalpartsdirect (They only ship in multiples). Then you're golden, plus, you'll have an extra LCD screen to repair your phone if it happens again.

TEP no longer covers cracks over an inch in length. A small crack can get replaced because it is covered under normal wear.

No, they won't even look at it. I was told exactly that by the rep of the repair center I went to. "We are not allowed to even touch the phone if the glass is cracked." They will not fix it. I even offered to buy the parts myself and pay for the labor, and that is when I was told they can't even look/touch it.

Well, it's total equipment protection in the same sense that a bumper-to-bumper warranty covers your car. If your car's engine takes a crap on you and your car is under warranty, they will fix it. However, if there is a rock on the road and you go over it with your car and crack the oil pan, all the oil leaks out and then your engine gets seized, you wouldn't really take it to the dealer for a warranty repair, would you?
In that case, you would call your car insurance company which is where Asurion comes in.
Gravity is not Sprint's fault. However, I think they should fix the phone if you are willing to pay for it instead of having to find some 3rd party electronics repair shop to do it. If they did, then maybe people wouldn't be committing insurance fraud like DirtyShroomz mentioned.
See, if I drop my phone now again and I call Asurion, they will replace it and then refuse to give me coverage until a year passes by, since you're only allowed two claims per year. If Sprint would have fixed my phone for $100, I would have given them the $100 instead of Asurion and saved the claim for the day I lose it or damage it beyond repair. I think Sprint is actually losing revenue by turning away repair jobs from phones that fall under the "physical damage" category.
Correct, Sprint's coverage has never been accidental. They used to occasionally cover drops, but spills and water damage have always been out of the question. It's the reason I buy my phones at Best Buy. I don't have to wait for a rebate, and I can get 100% accidental (full submersion included) protection on my phone, with a loaner phone if it needs to be sent out. It's 10 bucks a month, but compared to a new phone it's not bad.
That being said, I don't have it on my Evo as I know how to change out LCD panels now.
Assurion covers it.
I called in Friday about a broken screen(the entire piece of glass was shattered) and I got my brand spankin new Evo on Monday
That screen replacement deal was good while it lasted. Had my TP2 screen replaced under TEP before selling ur on here. Well, actually they ordered me a whole other phone, as they had no screens in stock. Too bad they are so whack about it now.
I've seen official policy posted before. It's anything over an inch is not supposed to be repaired. But what the hell is the difference? 1" vs shattered screen, you still replace the same pieces right?

I don't know if you are in the UK but if you are then many bank accounts give free insurance for phones, etc.that option might be there in other countries too.but you need the right type of bank account for that.my bank account gives me free travel insurance, break down cover for my car and phone insurance among other things.a lot cheaper than getting these separately.

I dropped min today from 20cm height and first 5 minutes later it cracked in 2 pieces so I feel your pain. I checked what the spare part costs, and it was 285 euro's for the AMOLED+Glass apparently it is glued together so everything has to be replaced, and then you need to add the work costs. So it probably will be cheaper to buy a used one and sell yours for parts
Just broke my screen the other day. Getting out of my car, note was between me and car door. Didnt end well. 250 for lcd combo on ebay.

No, this is wrong. Manufacturers lie about only way to replace glass+display. I broke the Galaxy S screen, and at samsung service they told me to replace everything, and that I have no chance to replace only screen. But I decided to try replace it by my self. I buy glass for Galaxy S on ebay for 9$. Then, using guitar pick I removed shards of glass. Then pasted on the sides of the glass with glue. And that's it! Fits perfectly. Works even better than before.
Yeah I need to upgrade current account to get it...don't have a problem doing it but was just unsure how long it will be before I can claim. But I also thought it might take longer to get it repaired than going for a mobile phone specialist insurer...also with the bank insurance..I know a while back my brother claimed and they didn't even ask for his old phone that was easily repaired!
Also just like to add...I really didn't apply that much pressure to the screen been, nursing this baby. So be careful. Wouldn't wish it on anyone to go through the pain I am.

Getting and claiming phone insurance after your phone is broken is fraud!
Either insure your phone beforehand, or deal with the consequences of not doing so, but don't break the law, and put the premiums up for people who had more foresight than you!

I think also like you !!!
;-)
I would strongly suggest you did not claim for it after the event as this is a criminal offence.
You may however, wish to check if your household (contents) insurance covers such damage and/or if your credit card covers accidental damage if you used it.

You can go to most shops and get your Galaxy S fixed for 90-100 euro where they only switch the glass but with the Note you can't find anyone, only to replace the whole thing. I have an insurance but was not sure if I was going to use it because it is my 2 device in 1 year that went busted. But it is painful to be remembered every time I turn it on so I will find out what the costs is going to be and use my insurance. I guess not using the insurance when you have it is to commit fraud

gf dropped my phone, screen cracked.....

:crying:So my girlfriend managed to drop my beautiful white s3 and now i wanna drop her ass. somehow she managed to break it the same day i rooted it and started to truly enjoy it.
Screen cracked at the top corner now theres a spider crack all over the top of the screen with a couple of cracks that run down to the middle phone still works, but the crack is killing me on the inside hehe. Now funny part is i bought the defender for it the day i bought it cause i knew it was too weak to handle a hard drop, and i've been checking the mail for it for 2 weeks now. then she comes and does that just the day before it arrived. After crying inside a while and just wanting to punch someone i managed to start looking at options.
checked online and the parts cost $240-$290, bell and best buy can fix it by it'll cost at least $325. I also bought the best buy protection plan (12.99/month). am thinking I should be able to find some cheap non-samsung parts for much cheaper than that, replace the screen and give it to best buy for an exchange as long as something is wrong with it (not sure wt though )

found a youtube video showing how to replace the screen, looks wayyyy too complicated

Screen cracked at the top corner now theres a spider crack all over the top of the screen with a couple of cracks that run down to the middle phone still works, but the crack is killing me on the inside hehe. even tmo's coverage of 7.99/mo allows us to pay 100 deductible for a replacement phone...
Best buy should cover it for you, for free.
Yeah... I pay 9.99 for coverage through Best Buy. No deductible, no questions, replaced in a couple of days. What did you sign up for?

Only thing I could think of is they might do it different over there in Canada. I think that is where the OP is from.
Just posted about this in the other cracked screen thread...
"Missed my damn pocket on Saturday night, and dropped mine on the garage floor. Got a small crack about as wide a finger nail from the right side of the ear piece curving up to the edge. Which is strange, cause the only other mark on the phone is a small scuff at the bottom of the back cover. But, I have BB insurance, so its in being fixed with no deductible! I've dropped my epic a few times in the last year, and not scratch on the screen. Makes me wonder what they changed in the formula from og gorilla glass to gorilla glass 2.
As much as I don't want to add all the bulk to it, the Otterbox Defender, or Trident Kraken may be in its future...

Fixed
not sure how you guys manage your finances, but if there is a fee, shouldn't see be paying for it?
If I dropped my girl's laptop, phone, crashed her car (or w/e) and we weren't pretty much married, I would cover it to get whatever it is fixed.
I dropped my friend's motorcycle helmet while handing it to him several years ago. he didn't have a good grip and as I passed it, it slipped into his hand from mine and fell to the concrete floor. it was still intact, but had nice bruising from the concrete. I apologized and got him a new one within a week...

What girlfriend?
The PEP from Best Buy in Canada is different than the one in the US. It does not cover physical damage, liquid damage, basically they call it "stupidity". I'm not calling it that, that's how they word it. PEP from Best Buy only extends the manufacturer's warranty. So instead of getting refurbs, you get brand new replacements. And you can pick a different phone if you want. I posted in another thread indicating that no carrier or 3rd party store in Canada offers insurance anymore. At least not that I'm aware of. It sucks because Best Buy charges $12.99 + taxes per month for the PEP. I have 2 PEP's from Best Buy. On one of my PEP's, I already got 3 brand new replacement phones. On my
2nd one I got one brand new replacement in which I chose a different model.
So both already paid itself.

Wow I can't imagine trying to sell that to customers. It's already hard enough trying to get people to get the 9.99 plan that replaces the phone with no deductible. Customers say "if I break the phone I'll buy a new one for 200, not realizing the phone is $650.

I think the deductible for our phone is $150. Which it's still cheaper than replacing just the screen.

Don't even have my phone or actually even purchased mine yet... this made me buy a case regardless soooo... thanks, haha.
If you wanna be technical about it then she's my fiance... I'd expect her to pay otherwise for sure lol... I guess a broken 4.8" screen makes you a bit bitter lol...
Yea best buy Canada is another story they do not cover physical or water damage... Am gonna try calling visa today to see if there is any insurance that my purchase can be covered under... But after reading online about this am no longer hopeful for anything....
Next time buy the case before even thinking of buying the phone... And do not trust a girl with a delicate thing like your phone...

Dropped phone facedown...what are my options?

So I dropped my phone at Whataburger today and it fell facedown and the whole screen has like hairline cracks (but no bumps whatsoever). I want to exchange it because of my damn OCD, it just bothers me. Is there a way to take it to T-Mobile and say that something is defective and get a free replacement since I have warrenty? I was thinking of saying that I was putting on an Otterbox case, and when I tried to take it off, the phone screen cracked...or something along those lines. I was googling and I read that I had to pay up to $199 to replace the screen from Samsung directly. Any other options? I'm a broke college student barley making it and I don't want to make my mom pay for it. Right now I'm on the phone with my mom, and I keep on hearing the screen crack, and I'm afraid the screen is just gonna shatter at any moment, or while it's in my pocket
Bro if you are a college student what are you doing with an 800$ phone m8? Lol

You are asking for advice on how to con T-Mobile, yet clearly admitting to being at fault. Sorry, my advice is to suck it up. Slap a screen protector on and learn from your mistakes.

I had been saving up to buy a better, faster, and more useful phone that would help out in my studies
What is wrong with you, dude? Do you really think T-Mobile would even buy your Otterbox excuse? Stop trying to scam people and own up to your own mistakes.
I don't think they will cover for it even if you have warranty since it's physical damage. If you have insurance then that will be a different story. If I were you, I'll just find a local store to try and replace it. If not, probably have to suck it up with a protector.
Sorry this happened to you, mistakes happens.
I'm also a college student so I know the struggles.
Good luck!

How long have you had the phone for? If it has been less than 30 days, you can still purchase squaretrade. If you used an amex card to purchase it in the past 90 days, you could apply for purchase protection through them.
Also FYI, the cost of screen replacement from Samsung is $269.xx. Source: I cracked my screen too . Thankfully I already had squaretrade, so my out of pocket was $99.
I wanted a faster to phone to improve my studies....said no one ever.
Give me a break....you can get a part-time job and earn some cash and buy a new phone or repair it.
Filing an insurance claim would probably be the cheapest, legitimate way of getting it fixed.

Damn...well how would I go about getting the insurance? Would it have to be through Samsung?? Yeah I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and try to get it replaced or see what can be done. Thank you, it sucks that such an expensive phone would get it's screen broken easily :/

Thank you for actually typing out a reply that will help me out unlike some others here. I've had the phone since launch day. I purchased it in the store through credit card, so I doubt I can do that. So basically I'd have to get the screen replaced? I can't tell T-Mobile that my phone is faulty? (Because legitametly, I've been having problems with the speaker, and the phone has been messing up quite a bit way before I dropped it). I think they should supply a refurbished phone, no? That is way to expensive to get the screen replaced by the way...but it's worth it. I was thinking of getting squaretrade, but I didn't think that this would happen to my phone since I had a case on it.

How would I go about doing that? I've never done that, as usually I just take it to T-Mobile whenever I have problems with my phone.
Clear nail polish if they really are micro cracks it should fill them in and not brake the phone. If the cracks are all the way through or huge it won't help as much though. Also it's only 200 to get the screen fixed. Go get a bar tending job you will make that money in one night. Grow up don't ask your mom for money, or try to rip off tmobile

If you have insurance on your phone, you have to contact the insurance company.
I'm on the original Jump program, so it's part of Jump, for me. There's usually a deductible though.

Cracked screen through insurance is 175, girlfriend dropped hers. If you didn't have the cracks, you could of called t-mobile and did a exchange where they would send you a refurb first and return your phone after receiving the refurb. If you this with your current phone, they will find out and charge your account so don't try it.
My girlfriend did the same, her crappy Caseology case did nothing but look pretty.
T-Mobile insurance the deductible is 175 for the S7E.

I don't know if the store would side with you on that (claiming that there were other problems before the screen cracked). Even then, perhaps they would try fixing those other problems without addressing the cracked screen. Bottom line, a cracked screen is not covered under the standard Samsung warranty so you'll have to pay to get that fixed either way. Good luck :good:
