Home screen reloading issue? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Hi everyone. Home screen reloads/ restarts are a common issue on the international sgs3. Anyone here experiencing the same problem under heavy usage?

Not a thing after 2 days. Been trying games, apps and the whole nine yards most of the time without any reloads or restarts for almost anything.
Amazing, coming from an Atrix.

Hey OP this will NOT be an issue. This thing has 2GB of RAM...even with a ton of apps running I always have at least 800-900MB of RAM free at all times. Android will never have to restart the launcher so you'll never get homescreen redraws. The issue you're seeing is because of the less RAM and the TW launcher having to be killed in memory to free up memory and then reloaded.

Thanks. How about multitasking? If you leave the browser open and go to other apps will it kill off the browser and make you reload the tabs?

You do realize this restarting has absolutely nothing to do with available RAM, and everything to do with buggy Samsung coding in TW3, right?

Not true, the same issue happens on Sense phones like HOX because of available memory. Android will dump TW or Sense from RAM if it runs out of available memory so the app you are currently using can function fine. Then when you finish with that app, the launcher has to be reloaded to memory which is the refreshing you see.
It's a known/documented issue. More RAM solves the problem because the launcher (along with many other apps) remain in memory always since there's plenty of free memory for other apps.
This is triple confirmed from my experience using a Galaxy Nexus, HOX and now a US GS3. Even if I use Nova Launcher on all 3 if I really push them the GN and HOX will refresh Nova once in a while while the GS3 will never do that.

At a technical level in all computer systems (mobile or desktop, etc.) MORE RAM = LESS PAGING.

You are wrong. It has EVERYTHING to do with RAM. Hence the NA versions of this phone will not see the problem.

This is with tons of apps and services running. I've been watching it, it rarely drops lower than 800MB.

As of yet, even while running probably 10+ apps at once, I have yet to have had any have to reload anything when coming back to them even after a few hours.
It has to do with RAM and the memkill settings the company used on the device. The OneX has ridiculously aggressive settings, for example.

More ram just masks the real problem, poorly written software. 1gb should be more than enough on phones. If WIN7 can run on 1gb, a phone should have no issues. 2gb is just a marketing tool atm. One X is rarely using over 500mb ram on my device.

What you say may be true. The problem is definitely due to partly poor memory management by software. For example on my international SGS3 when I have about 150mb left and i open a memory heavy app it chose to kill off my home launcher or my browser (2 frequently accessed apps) instead of a bunch of inactive cached apps. ICS/ Touchwiz seems very agressive in auto caching unwanted apps but very reluctant to free up memory by quiting those cached apps.
Now we don't know if this is Samsungs fault or google ICS fault but several phones on ICS all have this regressed memory management issue from gingerbread. There is not much that can be done to improve the situation. So it looks like a 2GB phone is the best bet at the moment if you want proper multitasking experience on ICS.

Recommendations to make better our SGS3 in every way possible

I would like to create a single post where we comment on recommendations to make better and faster and more reliable our phones, ways to decrease the RAM usage, extend battery life, useful tricks, etc.
- Disable all animations
- Disable buttons lights
- Download app named multitask shortcut
- Download SwiftKey 3 and Swype
- Use as less possible widgets and live wallpapers to avoid homescreen refresh
- Disable touch vibrations

I used to use touchwiz, but can't stand the slow transition, even after making the adjustment under development in settings.
Then i install Nova launcher, turn transition to the fastest. Wow, now my phone has over 300 mb free ram after boot up and is fast. And I mean real fast. For those who need speed. Go with Nova, and you retain most of the touchwiz features, like smart stay.

Jelly Bean RAM Hog

OK guys after spending two days with the new Samsung official software I was wondering if anyone else thinks that its a RAM hog. I have to keep killing the apps in the task manager otherwise I see lag while opening apps and things. Anyone else think this? Or could this possibly be because I quickly loaded about 40 apps onto the device? Any thoughts? Personally I hope Samsung will just improve and mature the software and it will get smoother. If not I might grab one of those deodexed ROMs.

I heard that Android loads apps in RAM for faster use unlike Windows. So if you close them, it loads them again, and that causes more bettery use. So why don't you try the phone without closing apps and compare which works better. Some poorly written apps cause lag and consume alot of system resourses. They should be closed and better be uninstalled.

Get OMEGA 27. It is very snappy. Make sure you do a complete wipe meaning formatting system and reinstalling all your apps.
It is very snappy. Do a custom install and choose to install or not install V6 SUper Charger which always leaves 200 mb of free ram. Your phone won't multitask as well but it will keep everything fluid.
Although I optioned not to install V6, and everything has been perfectly fine.
YOu can always install or uninstall mods thanks to OMEGA FILES that comes with the phone. Highly recommended.

Why are you worried? I stuck with Omega 13 for months. You should only force an update if you were:
1. Trying a test rom and then official came out.
2. Or if it has problems and a X.1 version came out.
Omega only updates every time a leak rom appears but that doesn't mean you have to update.

I haven't checked quadrant but the point of Jelly Bean is that it implements a better use of a GUI than ICS. So quadrant isn't going to take those kind of things into account.

quadrant doesn't mean a thing about how snappy the rom is.
Uninstall quadrant as it serves no REAL purpose.
stock odexed here, just cleaned up 300mb of bloatware. RAM at the end of 2 days is 600MB used, didn't cleaned up RAM. You better don't cleanup, it will just piss off the apps and will consume more juice.

I was having the same issue, but after reading the system logs I saw that Gallery was making some Samsung API to spam on the logs about streaming data. There was something on the log about my media servers on my network too, like PLEX.
So my best guess is that Samsung has an app which discover and syncs media, and the Gallery uses it to show pictures on the cloud. So the problem is that this discovery app has a bug which is causing the system loop on requests.
After some hours letting the Gallery consume my battery, I went to battery info and found the app that had been doing it.
Solution: deactivate Nearby Service(AllShareMediaShare.apk). That fixed the problem.
Disabling remote content(Gallery > Menu > Content to Display[or something like that]) and syncing(Gallery settings) also made the Gallery app goes really fast!

Lag on the galaxy note 10.1 2014

Hi just went to bestbuy to test the overall performance on this tablet. Sad to say that when i tested the exynos variant, I did encounter lag when I was scrolling the home screen. What I mean is that it doesn't feel smooth. Also pulling out flipboard caused lag. Trying to run a couple of applications like s note. It's not major lag that will take away the whole experience. Just lag that you'll notice from time to time even if it's minor. What's your opinion on this and how do you feel about the exynos? Is it still going to be worth it sacrificing a bit of performance for cheaper price and getting it earlier. Should I wait for the snapdragon variant since it might be faster. But it's also going to be more expensive and I won't be needing LTE. I had really high hopes of this tablet too.

Too many variables. How much other stuff was running in the background? Did you do all this testing after a fresh reboot? Who knows what the people before you were doing to it. And every Samsung experience running full blast does take it's toll, all those widgets updating all programs running etc. I'm just saying it's not all doom and gloom... Just tweak it.

Even in the my magazine app? I hate the stock tw launcher, I wonder how much resources it takes up
I think early technical analysis showed that the exnyos governor was not exactly optimized. I'm sure this thing will fly with the proper rom. I rommed my note 2 and last year's 10.1 when I felt lag was hindering the experience and both were super fluid after modification. Samsung uses good parts. Tw just tends to be bloated.

Totally agree on that. All android tablet has come so close. When I saw the 1st gen of the note 10.1 I thought it was the one for me. But with the screen resolution, it was a big let down for me. This year this is the one. Only thing that's stopping me now is the performance.

I may not be as tech savvy as many of you, but I just got this tablet and the performance is amazing. I have 12 active apps running and I don't notice any lag navigating the menus. I've been working in dropsync and synced a whole bunch of files while messing around with it and still noticed no lag whatsoever. I did notice that it gets a bit warm on the back though.

They probably would say that with any new device. I was at bestbuy the other day helping my sister buy a tablet and a couple of employees saw my Nvidia Shield (I was carrying it in its case) and were amazed by the device
Lol no that wasn't it, he wasn't trying to sell me anything. He was trying to find it how much I'm selling my old one for his friend.

Sad to say I'm running into lag and random reboots. So far it has been happening while scrolling through play store. It will freeze then reboot.
I need me some root.

Have you took the update yet? Mine doesn't have those issues

I noticed some lag in windows transistions. So what I've done is turn on developer options and changed transition animation scale from 1x to off. Feels much faster. For example, instead of xda kind of sputtering to life when initiated, it just pops up immediately.

Yes, I did take the update. I'm going to do a factory reset and see if that works.

Galaxy S6 RAM Issues May Be Intentional

While Samsung’s TouchWiz interface has by no means been among the top skins to be implemented by manufacturers, the Korean company has never given up on improving the custom Android interface. Most of the criticism revolves around the effects TouchWiz can have on the fluidity of a device’s interface, as well as the overall appearance the company imposes on their users. With the latest Galaxy S6 smartphones, Samsung has shipped a newer version of the TouchWiz interface, which Samsung claims is both lighter in system resource consumption, as well as a more refined experience.

Why cant just devs make custom rom with fixed ram managment?
This kind of stuff is rubbish:

TouchWiz is themeable, and if you still aren't happy, you can buy something else--Samsung isn't holding a gun to your head. Besides, it's irrelevant to the supposed topic of the article and only serves to set a negative tone. This is little more than a biased and poorly executed opinion piece.

I dont care about memory leak, i just want rom which can handle over 20 apps in multitasking screen which wont reload in couple of secs.
[QUOTE=Isus memory IS RAM lmao.. thats precisely what the mem leak fix is.. it fixes the multitasking and allows it to stay in the background longer than stock which kills it very aggressively out of the box..
you should read up on it because you clearly dont know what your talking about.

You clearly dont know what you're talking about, I had memory leak issues on Nexus 5 but I still could have over 15 apps in recent tabs without reloading unless ram usage is over 95%... On S6 even after restart, when ram usage is 60% I cannot have more than 3 apps in recent tabs.. Explain me now, how can memory managment and memory leak be the same? smartass ..
P.S (memory IS RAM lmao) memory doesnt clearly mean RAM, there is memory in GPU, drives, sd cards, etc.
[QUOTE=Isus
the mods used for memory leak is specifically in regards to ram management which you modify the android system to run more apps in memory at a time without the system forcing them to restart.. this is available as well as included in many roms already..
RAM = Random Access Memory which is obviously the memory i was referring to.. if i was referring to any other memory i would have indicated so but assumed it was safe to simply say "memory" and you would know what memory i was talking about since the main topic is RAM memory.
Im not trying to argue, you made a post i said there is a fix for it already because there is. You can not believe me all you want, i could care less lol.

because ROM does not control memory management its more like Kernel related stuff

Memory leak is different than ram management.
Memory leak is pre-5.1.1 where the phone gets slow over a longer period of time but a reboot fixes it. The colour fade fix is one of the memory leak fixes.
Memory management is the multitasking issue we are having where apps don't stay alive while multitasking!
