[DEFECT] Gap between glass and casing. Whose got it? - Galaxy S III General

Does your SGS3 have a gap down the left hand side of the screen?
Is dust building up in it?
If so, post a photo, if you can
I am returning my first SGS3 today as there is a gap between the glass and the casing.
Dust is building up in it and it looks rather unsightly.
I was just wondering if it's just me or not.
Can you see the line of dust down the left side of the screen?

No gaps here. Mines is nice and tightly sealed up.

Mine has a small gap but I can't see it with the case it's in.

OP are you sure its not a HOX you're using? ;-P

I have got another one, but im afraid its still the same.
To be sure, I'll have to have it for a few days and see if any dust accumilates in it.
I looked at another one in phones4u and the screen is perfectly alligned.

Dont have it. Take some tooth brush and clean it.

I don't think the bristles of a toothbrush would get in the gap to be honest.
That's bedside the point anyway It should be perfect!

I just ran my nail along the gap and managed to dig out the few flakes of dust in there, so a toothbrush should work fine.

afaik all the samsung mobiles i have used had micro gaps, its the way it is designed. cant notice the gap in s3 as it is white, but it will have it surely.
btw the micro gap is required to absorb the shocks. else all the shock will reach out the screen easily.

The problem I have is that on the left side the gap is quite substantial. Where as there is no gap at all on the right side.
It's like the whole glass part it too far over to the right.
I have seen another blue S3 at Phone 4u and there it an equal gap on either side; so I know for sure there is a problem with this batch at the 3 store.

My white one has no such gap. At least nothing I can discern anyway...

Yeah cyberckean is pretty pro.
Also, thumbs up for everyone who is now inspecting the edge of their phone for the first time?
I have a little gap at the top of my screen, but its not gathered any dust.

You are not the first to bring this issue up, so I'm thinking many people have this issue but only a few of them will notice it.

I thought there was one, it is moving slightly. But guess that's good, firmness bad for drops.
It is also an optical illusion! Depending on the lighting angle. Does it look like a big gap on the left? Flip the phone upside down, the gap is still on the left it doesn't flip. Not worried now after noticing it, you had me for 20sec.

Glass screen is not what I expected W/Pics

Not sure if its my phone and it needs to go back.
At the earpiece there is a flat spot that runs across and then another one just below it.
Seems like the process to get the curve threw them a little since its wavy all over but that is something you have to look for and can look past. The earpiece area is what I am most concerned with. Would like to know if others are seeing this.
would you be kind enough to post a picture?
Probably have to pull out the gear to do that but will be taking pics of the vibrant tomorrow so can do it then.
If you look at the speaker and then to the right and left of it there is a flat spot that runs through the glass from side to side if that makes sense.
Either way I will get pics up tomorrow.
post pic..
I don't see anything on mine.
Here are the pics.

It could be designed into the screen but there is another line under it and its not real pretty when the phone is sitting on a desk and you see that. Guess I am just used to the flat smooth screens like the other galaxy s phones.
Is it like, indented into the glass? Looks strange
Mine doesn't look like that. Mine is smooth throughout.
Ok I see it in the pics. That kinda stinks I thought Google said the design was to be the screen blending in to the phone. Bummer.
Going to the store tomorrow and checking out others. If it was a common issue I would just deal with it. Oh well.

It is. Its a flat spot and I can see why its there with the speaker hole there and the cam and prox sensors. Seems they could make a smooth transition or I got a dud.
Take it back and get a new one.
Seems like a hardware defect, I don't see that on mine.

I also noticed that on the first one I got, although not as defined. The issue I had was with the plastic ring around the screen. It was deformed in a few areas. I returned it for another one. This ones perfect. I suggest you do the same.

I have it too.. but not as bad as yours. I have to really use the glare to see it.
I have the same thing...cant notice unless it has light glare on it.
I think pics make it look worse but you can always return it.
Maybe it's flat cuz of the front camera and the light sensors.
I can't tell on mine, unless i have light reflecting on it (like in your pictures)

Thats what I am wondering. I had to use the light to get it in the pics. I deal with glass all day so see these things more then the average person. The bottom is nice and smooth . but the top is a different story. I wonder if others have this and just don't notice it. I hope not but maybe the pics will help others see what I am seeing and give a definite answer.
Either way I am going to go check out some others at BB tomorrow and will report back with what I find.
It may not be a issue at all and part of the design of the phone.
same here but i didnt notice it until you mentioned it.
No problems here on mine. Weird.

i got this far and also removed the ribbon of flex cable.
after that, i cant get the screen out ot the front housing. is there something im missing? when i use a pry tool to try to remove it like the rest of the parts, it creaks like its going to break. ive broken it down to study it before the lights get here just to have a grasp on what im doing. any one have any pointers? some one told me it may be glued in and i would need a hair dryer or something similar to remove it. any help you guys could share would be greazt! thanks!

Ballsy man, a lot of phones have the screens glued. It's a stronger construction method and allows for the phone to be thinner.

sorry, i was cooking pork chops. that video posted stops right before where im at...(i know because that is the video i used for reference to get as far as i did.)
they dont remove the screen or where the buttons are at.
its not that ballsy really. this phone only has about 12 screws and 3 cables. there arent even any security stickers or water indicators.

i never got any farther. ive got a box of surface mount leds in 10 colors and nothing to do with them...
Its a double sided sticker holding the lcd to the front housing. I've replaced mine and had to reuse it. It went ok but I stretched it and the glue weakened.
Also the soft keys are glued to the lcd so remember to unplug that ribbon.

My C fell off when my phone was sitting on my lap on a road trip. I guess the sun was too hot for it and the glue just turned to cupcake frosting. I ended up taking the other two letters off along with the C and it doesn't look too bad! All that gunk in the C in the OP's picture can be rubbed out so it has a clean look.

possible you can post a pic? might just do that.
While I was cleaning the back of my phone I noticed one of the letters moving, so I went ahead and took all 3 out.
I used rubbing alcohol to get the rest of the glue out, and it's pretty clean now.
I actually prefer the feel of the back without the letters. It was weird at first, but I think it feels better.
I'd post a pic, but I don't have another camera.

RIP "C" lol ...sorry bout that bruh
You know this gives me an idea...
With the filler removed from those placeholders there's enough countersink to fill with epoxy and then sand smooth.
Clear five minute epoxy resin could be used and you can make them any color you want by mixing in a bit of acrylic paint found in a craft store.
Get creative!
Just be sure that it's clean so the epoxy sticks well. Or it could fall out again...
I'm willing to bet that properly mixed epoxy will stay put though.
sad times right now, good thing is that its going back to att once the new phone is released =)
similar to the Nexus 5 ...all the Nexus letters on my white and red housing have been RIP'ed
wow, i didnt even know that they could rip off like that ?? I say you clean it up and throw some black silicone RTV in there and no one will be able to tell the difference haha

No Gapgate here...

Just got my Verizon Note 4 today and there was no "gapgate" issue with my phone.
Anybody else get their phone with the gap?
Edit: Mine was a White Pre-Order from Verizon.
I got one for myself and my wife. The one that arrived from Verizon in the mail had a slight gap. The one I purchased from the Verizon store was perfect.
Gap gate?

Mine has a pretty good gap on the top side of the device. Dust keeps getting on there and building up. Not sure if I should return it before the 14 days is up.
No gap but mine has some small scratches on the screen hardly noticeable but upsets me because its brand-new. Not worth returning though

No gap. Black.
I forgot to mention that mine was one of the White pre-orders from Verizon.
My Black Pre-order had a pretty substantial gap on the top as well as a nice sized gash on the inner portion of the aluminum border where the gap is located. VZW is sending me a new device. I hope that this one doesn't have the same issue.

Did VZW give you any issues. My 4 came with chip near the headphone jack. And they are giving me all sorts of troubles. They told me they could send me a new one but they'd have to charge me the Retail price and then once they receive the old phone they'll refund it. According to them "We can't tell when the chip happened" even though I called less than 24 hours after receiving the phone

Button bezel wear and tear

Anyone else who has had a G3 for a while noticed this? As you can see in the image, because of use over time the gap between the lens and top button has visible wear from the finger constantly coming into contact with it. I don't mind it as I run my G3 100% naked so it's scuffed up anyway, bit I thought it was an interesting place for use wear

Maybe its just me but that straight bottom cut on that "custom" piece that you made is causing even more OCD issues looking at it. Should have made it to cover the corners as well man. It just looks... unfinished to me. Sorry.
[edit][offtopic] @shayneflashindaily Btw, how does the dbrand skin feel in hand? The texture I mean, is it more grippy or smooth? I've never used one till now and planning to get them shipped to India. Slickwraps or dbrand? [/offtopic] [/edit]

I have the same on mine, but like someone above me said it is because that part of the phone is slightly raised so when you put your phone down (without a case or with the LG Quick Circle case) that part is touching the surface your placing your phone on. So I don't think it is because of your finger..
