US GSIII Audio Hardware - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Could someone with the device please confirm the exact audio hardware in the phone? We know the Intl' variant has the Wolfson audio chip, but nobody yet that is holding a phone has confirmed what is in the US version.
Thanks

Wouldn't they have to disassemble the phone to find the DAC?
I would like to know this as well.

there should be some easy way to find out by reading the info out of one of the system files or installing an app that gives detailed system info.....I don't know exactly what app would do this but surely one of the many system tool type apps would have a detailed system info dump

I downloaded the source for the ATT model and found a file called
WM8994-core.c
there are other files that look like they could be other Wolfson Media C files, so I am not sure if the source is set up to be able to compile for a large array of audio hardware?
Found the file in location in source
"SPH-L710_NA_Kernel.tar\SPH-L710_NA_Kernel.tar\drivers\mfd\"
anyone care to comment?

I think you nailed it dude. theres also a folder in kernel\include\linux\mfd called WM8994 so thats a good sign. HELLOOOO VOODOO SOUNDD!

one can only hope, needing some sort of confirmation

Subscribed to this thread! Hoping for voodoo sound.

just sent supercurio a message with finding to see if it's an option

Really looking forward to answer about this.

Fingers crossed it's Wolfson. I miss Voodoo Sound from my Captivate.
But I'm pretty sure you nailed it, and it is indeed Wolfson.
It was such a let down on the SGSII when I learned Samsung didn't go with Wolfson for it.

So I'm not sure what people meant when they said the headphone volume isn't very loud. I just tried it and holy hell it's louder than my Gnex with sound control and almost as loud as my Fascinate with voodoo.

What I've read said the international version is quiet while the U.S. version is nice and loud.

Would love to know if the wolfson dac is confirmed on the US version. As far as i can tell, it's only been asserted in a couple reviews against supercurio's tweet that it wouldn't be used.

apparently the answer is going to have to wait until I get my Verizon model and report what I can find..........sheesh...that's two weeks out guys....and everyone else has them at least in small numbers.....what a shame

So even though it not same wolfson chip as intl being tge wolfson 8994 does that mean voodoo sound will work or just need a few tweaks to get working?

It really depends on what supercurio does. I saw a tweet where he says he was only deving voodoo sound for the Intl version but if they end up being similar it would be a slap in the face to everyone who has donated and purchased his app in the US. I think if its Wolfson he will still do it eventually myself. Just a hunch.

besides cars in general are a crap environment for quality. Not many people have an in car setup where a difference will be noticeable and the variety/customization pandora offers beats internal storage 95% of the time... for me at least.

Flash Mod for camera

Just wondering if anyone has thought about adding a flash to the camera. Don't know if or how it could be donebut there a people here a lot smarter than myself in these types of things.

I have no use for a ffc but a flash, that would make this phone ab?out perfect. Is the hardware available? This is one I would like to try.
...
I'd love to try this if someone could tell me how!
Could have used one at last Saturday night's Halloween party. Totally forgot that it didn't have one. Was thinking of my Nokia E63.
I'd be all over this. It is beyond me how a high end handset such as the Vibrant is released with no flash function essentially rendering a great camera useless at night.
Until someone actually figures out how to hack a LED onto the back of the phone (?), there's always this:

And the answer is that I wanted the best phone I could get. My other choice at the time was the Evo but I sacrificed a flash for 48gb of storage and slightly lower TMobile mmonthly bill. The flash is a minor issue and I was only curious if anyone had modded one on the Vibrant.

how about taking the entire camera including the LED from a fascinate or a European Galaxy S and doing a little hacking of the back cover??
And while at it, taking the FF camera form the I9000 too?
I'm sure someone can come up with a software mod that will work.

get a cheap case(the silicone? ones pry would work the best) and hack it up so a small LED can be placed near the camera with a button or switch that will be on the back of the phone.

this kind of response annoys me so much. I don't care what kind of software you got loaded. It is no replacement for a flash. Try taking a picture of people while out at night in bar lighting. It ain't good. Not unless you're taking pictures of statues using a tripod.
Have a friend with a phone with good camera take a picture of the same thing in low lighting using flash and you with your fancy software then compare. Not even close.
Who wants to take their Nikon around everywhere with them?
Still a mystery why some models have it and others don't, but regardless, anyone know of an add on case/cover with a light? I know they were made for the original iphones...

New Update Coming...

http://www.androidcentral.com/sneak-peek-samsung-fascinate-update
The Verizon Samsung Fascinate is set to get another maintenance update over the next few weeks -- no, it's not Froyo -- and we got a sneak peak at an early version. GPS has been targeted, and it's looking better in early testing. Signal strength has been addressed. Also, the backlight settings are a little better, which helps the capacitive buttons stay lit longer. That's just the tip of the iceberg. I walk through them in the video after the break.

Jt,
Have you guys gotten an update.zip put together, or is it still an odin file ????
Last I read, it was at an .jar file + and update.zip, is this still the case ????
Also, is there just a stock update.zip ???? As in, I appreciate the work you do, but I like my stock mms.apk and music player and stuff. Is there a "virgin" version ???? I don't mind re-rooting or removing the bloatware myself

Full Rogers UXJL1 Source Available!

I hope I'm not being an idiot here, but it seems like the full UXJL1 Rogers Froyo source is available at http://opensource.samsung.com/.
The download is 468MB and goes extremely slowly, so I'm not sure what's in it yet, but it's looking good.
hmmm...interesting. Does this mean what I think it means? Many developers were wanting the actual source.

I'm still downloading, but if this is actually the full source, this means we could have a proper Captivate kernel, and if we're willing to sacrifice modem speeds, we could have bluetooth headset calling compatibility and noise suppression compatibility with a kernel better than stock.

We should be able to, but there's something about bluetooth calling that seems to need the exact right kernel/modem/ROM combo.

Personally, I have dreams of a vanilla FroYo ROM that isn't just a stripped/themed Samsung ROM...
I really need an AT&T Nexus S to be officially announced soon!! I couldn't care less about the awesomeness of the Atrix, etc, I'd give up quite a bit for a solid Google Experience phone on AT&T. If I still could have bought a new Nexus One when I got my Captivate, I probably would have.

Same here. A AT&T compatible Nexus S would be sweet. But I'm a little hesitant on giving up the external sd card. The Atrix looks sweeeet too.

My fiance has a captivate also. It's horrific. The voice quality is fine, but she nearly made my ears bleed by spraying Windex while on the phone with me once. The most subtle noises are amplified by this phone with an i9000 setup.

It is probably due to the fact that the audience chip uses dual mics, one to pick up your voice, the other to pick up background noise and filter it from the primary mic. Without working drivers, I assume both mics pick up sound and get sent as part of the phone conversation.

Yeah, I think they started realizing that hardly anybody uses the headphones provided with phones anyway (except for iPhone users, apparently...I see them using the Apple ones all the time), so some manufacturers just don't even bother to include them anymore.

It's not that they were saying "only iPhone users use headphones." It was that it's more common to see iPhone users with their "earpods"( :silly: ) and not so much android users with their stock phones. My friend had the Beats phones with his HTC and said they were crap compared to his Bose ones and threw them away. I have also never found value in the cheap in-box phones personaly. To each their own, but I would be happier to pay less for the phone w/out them and have less crap to throw or give away later.

No gaps, the trim round the ports looks clean cut, too, and the word Audio is missing.
Wonder how many went through QC before they noticed.

On the back of the HTC One devices there is normally a logo at the bottom that says "Beats Audio". However, some devices only have "Beats" written.
Hence the discussion. Perhaps concern about QC?

in regards to OP, it's interesting. I wonder whether or not it's either a change in the development timeline that perhaps the earlier phones had beats audio or visa versa. Or perhaps a sign of 2 different factories producing slightly different handsets?
I'd be interested to know if there was any correlation between the handsets with beats/beats audio on to the ones with the gaps/no gaps, as that could give some idea on if there is an issue in production in one particular factory making the phone. Or if it's to do with the release date.....
For those I have lost with this semi-rambling post.....Example;-
All the phones with beats audio on are the ones that also have the gaps in the build and are all the earlier released phones.....
or
All the phones with beats audio on are the ones that also have the gaps in the build and although produced at different times since the phones release they were all made by the same factory.

how could they let something like this slip by?
I assume they have a slightly lower QC level due to the expense of the case itself? Does not justify it... but.
That would be my phone in the video (with my hands and voice of course ;p) and yeah no audio on the bottom just the beats portion of it.
