Is it me or the tablets at the CES today were nothing but crap! All this great hardware but had some serious OS issues, or lack there of.
Even the one from Vizio was lagging/skipping frame rates soooo badly. The Adam was EXTREMELY skipping frame rates, and was had crap touch response, and can't see how feasible playing games on that thing because of the way it's designed. Only the PlayBook seems to be as smooth as a baby's bottom, but it's not Android unfortunately.
My SGT pwns them all, at the same time! hah. What are your thoughts so far?
If they would have been able to ship last summer, no doubt I'd have an Adam. I'd really love the Pixel Qi screen and near stock Android, but they seemed to go further and further with their customization there, and it just took too long and I got the Tab. I'm still hoping next year brings 15-19" slates/tablets. I'd even consider a Win 8 slate in that form factor, but Ubuntu/other Linux would be best there as a full laptop replacement.

I think that size really takes away from the portability of the tablet
I dunno, I have been working my tab for about a month. I have a GalaxyS and the Tab and since flashing the firmware to get phone support, I have left my Galaxy S in a desk drawer. I swap sim cards out if I want to carry something smaller than the Tab. None of the tablets announced have talked about voice support. I think the Vizio unit with infrared is interesting but I remember having this on a palm pilot and didnt use it much as a remote.
I don't see how any of these new units are doing anything different until Gingerbread/3.0 or whatever we are calling it is gold.
I like USB ports but what I am going to do with those? Print? I can already print on the tab. What we need is less hardware improvement and more software improvement - something that is missing from the CES announcements. You can customize a turd any way you want but if it's still a turd it's going to stink.

Replace a laptop. Something that big without the need for the keyboard would be a perfect replacement. With Swype, BlindType and others, I don't need to bother with a full keyboard, and with a tablet, there's no need for a wireless mouse or a fidgety touch pad. Weight-wise, I'm fine with 17" laptop in a bag now, but with the battery life their getting on 10" tabs, I can see something with solid state drive of some kind being a full and complete laptop replacement not requiring me to carry around a brick or open and close it. It is the eventual replacement for the laptop, no doubt. If you really lust for a physical keyboard: Bluetooth, and it'd still be less to lug around than a current laptop bag with a brick, mouse and keyboard. I just hope it's by next year. www.kno.com is already taking pre-orders for a dual screen 14" tablet. We have the tech already to make heavy passive-screen folding laptops as ancient as rotary dialing phones.
My ideal two gadget life would be something around the size of the tab, maybe about half the trim around the screen, as phone/portable tablet, and the big one for actual work and real computing that I use my laptop for now. No phone; just those two sizes.
The only one that looked good was the xoom. And honestly I think the main thing is the software that is made for a tablet. If we could get that for our tabs then I don't see the point of going anywhere.
Just worried that we don't have the hardware to run honeycomb.

Something just makes me uneasy about Motorola android products...not trying to put anybody down if you've got a Motorola Android device, but the quality just isn't there. At least for me it isn't. They have a cheap feel to them and lets not even get into Motoblur....awful. I dont see the Xoom being that successful

There's a LOT of untapped potential in the Hummingbird SoC. GPU wise, it's pretty close to a dead heat with a Tegra 250. Seriously.
I am so hoping you are right on that one. I paid full retail 15 days too early to get the 100 refund so I am not the happiest about that. However honestly I love the size more than I thought I would. It just fits perfectly so I don't know if the tablets that are being announced would be a little too big after using my galaxy tab?

I have to agree. I was hoping for a new 7" tab with dual cores and comparable resolution to the tab. 10" tablet is useless on the go and if I'm at home, what's wrong with using a laptop?
I was really disappointed by the Streak 7. I can't even believe Dell has the nerve to introduce such a ****ty product.
Kind of funny how some are in a mad rush to get something bigger while I just junked the iPad in favor of a Galaxy Tab because it's so much smaller and lighter. Norwegian Company FXI have created the world's smallest computer and its literally a thumb drive. The Cotton Candy might not seem much but it does pack a punch, more than some high-end smartphones or tables. I dunno, I'm just finding it hard to serve a purpose for me, personally. And I would still need Win7 for many computing needs...

Just wanted to let you all know that although my Atrix is no longer in use, I have the lapdock lying around.
It is a good piece of hardware and I have been toying with finding a way to embed the actual atrix itself inside the lapdock. However, the real problem there is that there is no use for doing that since the Atrix's native dock functions suck!!! I also considered and toyed with the Raspberry, but its not meant for that.
However I have come across this puppy: FXI Tech Cotton Candy
and my plan is to embed it inside my Lapdock and create something actually useful with that hardware.
The FXI Cotton Candy officially supports GB, ICS and now Ubuntu 12.
For anyone who doesn't know what it is:
"FXI Tech Cotton Candy packs more power in a tiny space. It has a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 as its processor and the quad-core ARM Mali-400MP for graphics. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. On both ends are USB 2.0 and HDMI out connectors and there’s one micro USB 2.0 connector on the side. It has 1GB RAM and a microSD slot for up to 64GB of expandable storage."
Given its size, it easily fits disassembled into the dock connector that rotates on the actual lapdock.
Does this sort of thing interest anyone?

If not, the likelyhood of you getting one this year is almost zero. They have stopped pre-orders as they have filled up on those, and currently have nobody to do mass production for them. Since this is their situation and they have to find someone to build these units, you most likely won't see any this year, as it takes time to complete all the necessary steps to put a product into production. Your best bet may be one of these to test out your idea:

Should work perfectly fine... people have shown that you can connect a PS3 to the lapdock. Only question is: will a regular ICS or Ubuntu 12 have the lapdock drivers..

I think that their generic... The fact that CM7 doesn't have any of Motos lapdock drivers yet you can use the keyboard and mouse proves it...

You and Alaq have made me **** bricks. I normally figure stuff like this out early on. It's not until now that I've realized that connecting usb and hdmi ports will make the lapdock a sologig. A real upgradeable laptop, how about that?! It would be nothing to find screens of a similar size to replace them in any lapdock model if you wanted to do so. Still ****ting bricks.

I knew about it's potential ever since I saw that ps3 video (Either last year or the beginning of this year...), but it wasn't till this month that people started releasing PCs on a stick... But yea it would be amazing for school to have a razr thin laptop that runs smoothly and has 8 hour battery life (probably more because it's no longer charging the phone), and that's why I decided to start on the project (In my sig), I'll release everything when I'm through with it.. I'll have to record everything that I do to the lapdock for you guys...

But it is not efficient if you compare the price with typical windows netbook

Once you get it sorted, could you make a video showing the performance? I love the idea and have been considering making a sort of 'dummy phone' like box to house a raspberry pi but this little a10 stick computer looks like it could be a better option. For me, it would have to run linux as android on a laptop is just wrong as far as I am concerned It looks good, but would not be worth it unless it is faster than webtop imho.

Yh I know what you're taking about , the USB drives are trending nowadays but I hardly can figure out a reason for them with 1.0 Ghz and 512 ddr2 ram which I believe is the maximum specifacion those USB form factor can go. They’re limited to arm instruction set , which means arm software and not x86
so nothing will work instead of android , however I have heard of Ubuntu ARM port.But I believe installing Ubuntu or any other Linux on that USB will be hard to implement
and I think after you install ubuntu you can customize it to make it more like XBMC

I think it looks awesome even compared with the $25 Raspberry Pi's out there. I'd like to get one, but then again I can use my GS2 for just about everything I need and it'll have more power. It'd be good to have one of these little guys in case I went to someone's house for a weekend or on vacation and needed a basic PC to browse internet, etc.

I have been looking at cstick as well, but the lack of information makes me consider it a dead project.
I have ordered a Tizzbird N1, which is more focused on being a media player but will have Google Market (with custom firmware) and the possibility to run apps.

I have had a mk802 for a month or more. Its OK not great. Recently it doesn't want to grab wifi which makes it almost useless. Its laggy and for sale.

i'm also using the mk802.. had it for about 2 weeks now. didn't do much with it other then install XBMC for android on it. and a few pluging to stream my movies and shows. it gets laggy at times

The problem is that this is coming from an industrial designer who has no experience with making phones. He has the concept which isn't much. Plus, that is a very specific connection that only the one phone would have and you would have to always stay with that phone if you wanted to use your accessories (which probably cost a lot). What those accessories need is a universal connection that can work with any phone and then software that can be integrated into any phone. While they're nice renderings I'm not holding my breath for this even becoming a reality. Their donation site doesn't even offer the product for high donors which leaves little incentive to donate.

Imo the Asus Padphone is the real lapdock successor.
You can transform it into a tablet and a notebook with working touchscreen .

The tablet design is quite horrible.
For something like this to fly, it will need to be non proprietary. Also, physical connectors need to go, NFC or some version that is high speed enough for video is needed.

Yeah, I agree this sounds fishy, especially since Canonical hasn't said a word so far, and I'd think they would be spreading the word to the four corners of the earth if they had finally managed to get some traction on the smartphone market.
Personally, I'd much rather have physical connectors, though. Most things wireless chew through battery and tend to go haywire at the time you most need them. An option to go wireless or wired would cover all bases, though.
Fishing for investment funds is my guess.
I would love to see the concept play out, but expect it to happen as natural evolution from the couple products we already have.

I was referring to docking the phone as opposed to streaming video over wifi over distance, I say use NFC for communications including video/sound and induced recharging ala powermat all at the same time. Technically challenging perhaps but not science fiction.
