Its on the move but is Windows phone 8 [Apollo] possible for our old HD2? - HD2 General

well our phone has just been amazing knowing that the past three years there have been major developments improving our phone's ability. Thanks to the devs android, WP7, ubuntu is now possible (and meego well almost) but MS has just relased windows phone 8 for development and it has many potential features like native code and external slot features, mango apps are even compatible..
So now I wonder (what DFT have to say about this) could this new OS be possibly ported in our device? what do you guys think?

They are saying that existing phones won't be upgraded...are there real technical limitations in play here? If the new "shared core" of Win8/Windows Phone 8 just doesn't support the hardware we have, then I'm not sure there is much hope. Maybe an expert can weigh in here...
At a minimum we can probably get WP7.8, but that's literally the new start screen and nothing else from what I gather.

Apparently all WP7 devices will be upgraded. If this is true we might see a WP8 ROM.

Microsoft said that's not the case.
I feel sorry for those who brought the Lumia 900 for $700ish (aud) which just got released here (Australia) and now they can't get Apollo.

old windows phones will get an upgrade but its called 7.8 not 8. i'm guessing there's a hardware limitation because there really isn't any other reason to screw over all the current windows phone owners specially lumia, but then again Microsoft said wp7 is not compatible with hd2 ...

Essentially WP7.8 will be WP8 minus the hardware-specific features such as the multi-core support and the NFC things. From what I've heard it will have exactly the same UI everywhere else.

based on the specs of HTC Rio, I could say WP8 is possible for our phones!

It will just be like a WP8 theme for WP7. WP7.8 won't run any WP8 apps at all.

HTC Rio uses a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor while the HD2 only has a Snapdragon S1. I would worry that the WP8 user experience might not be so good on the old Snapdragon S1. However, I think the bigger obstacle is WP8 is supposed to require DirectX10 while the HD2 GPU is an Adreno 200 which only supports DirectX9.

yeah that will be the problem but I think there will be ways to circumvent it just like the touch drivers for the WP7. In general I see it with minor set backs in speed but it would be functional

That would be great, I guess I will hold onto my HD2 until someone like Cotulla says it can or can not be done.

Not to break your heart but to clear your mind
Well here's the evidence we needed for HD2

So to some of the users that still have questions about Windows Phone 8 on our HD2:
There are no drivers for the windows 8 kernel available. Also Secure Boot for the WinRT kernel might pose issues
We only made it this far because WP7 is based on the WinCE kernel (as Windows Mobile was), the similairity with the HTC HD7 and beta drivers were maybe developed for platform development/testing purposes back in 2009/2010
After sticking with the HD2 for about 3 years and actively updating, I think a Windows 8 device will be my next upgrade.

he's not a mod but a long time HD2 experienced user. You can check his profile out but for me he seems legit. Anyway the good thing is there still is hope

I see. Kid1988 might know his stuff, and I mean no offense to him when I say this, but I will wait till the HD2 guru master Cotulla says WP8 is a no-go. After all, he was the one that brought WP7 to the HD2 and knows how to write custom SPLs and bootloaders.

This alone would be reason to port WP8. I guess if there will be MicroSD support, this would mean that the cards wouldn't be encrypted, and would make things for WP+SD Android users much, much easier. There wouldn't be so much partitioning and stuff involved.

HD2 will NOT get an update to WP7 - confirmed at MIX10!

UPDATE!! Looks like this was not true and there will be no WP7 for HD2 at all.
There is still hope, you can help deciphering & hacking WP7 image:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=647138
(if you really want WP7S on your beloved HD2, for me this whole new OS looks more like EPIC FAIL)
Hi,
I have just got an 'inside' information from a person close to MIX10 and I think it is pretty legitimate.
HD2 is going to get WP7 update, but in a bit different way that you may think. Soon after the conference MS will distribute unfinished, pre-release WP7 image that will be intended for devlopers, so they can test their apps on real hardware before proper devices are available (in the end of the year). Obviously because HD2 is the only device at the moment - and will be for a long time - that meets hardware requirements of WP7, this image will be intended for it.
It is still unclear if final, 'production' WP7 version will be released for HD2 when new OS is launched, but even if that is not the case, I am sure that chiefs will be able to somehow mix both versions together
According to my source this will be announced very, very soon at MIX10!
We can only hope i suppose =/

May just be me but the WP7 posts are getting a little bit boring and shouldn't they be in there Windows Phone 7 Series forum? Rather than having multi threads on essentially the same things.
Plus we get to buy all our apps . . . again.
Let's hope for a port anyway, whether official or not...
I'd like to believe you, but the MS devs were raving about the emulator that comes with the Phone developer tools... I dunno. Seems iffy but the existence of an emulator does not preclude the HD2 from getting a 'MIX' build - after all, you need to have the emulator around for a variety of reasons, namely the HD2 won't be available forever
im also watching mix10 and as far as i remember i heared somthing like "all of you who will have an wp7s device at the end of the conference".
could be the special dev-phone, as some folks guess, but i think an hd2 rom is the easiest and the most logical solution.
So i "guess" its possible. and by the way, i excpected silverlight for mobile for months and now its there and i like it.

Those hardware specs are basically the snapdragon specs with some ancillary stuff. Snapdragon includes the AMD z430, based on the 360s XENOS. Most confirmed WP7 devices are using snapdragon thus I expect the z430 will not be left out as far as directx9 support goes. It supports openGL es 2.0 so it has a unified pixel and vertex arch. I really don't think we are going to get an official port. But based on those specs, a hacked port doesn't seem unlikely at all.
PS does anyone know the hardware touch point limit on the HD2s digitizer?

Hmm, so these are the official specs?
From what I have understood while searching info about the Nexus One touchscreen issue, HTC has used the ClearPad 2000 touchscreens in their devices till now, which have only 2 finger limit. The ClearPad 3000 has a 10 fingers limit.
I don't know if the HD2 has the same ClearPad 2000 or not, but if it does not, that is one thing missing right? (correct me please if I am not right, but I think it says 4 finger is the minimum requirement)
Second, it says 'camera button required' from what I think to have seen. We do not have that.
Third, 8 GB flash... again, don't know about that.
Anyway, looks like it's MIX10 and we still do not have an official answer on if the HD2 will get 7 Series OS or not. I'm fine with it... and I think my future Desire is smiling as well
Anyway, 7 Series looks good. They did give us some nice new info about the OS.

Specs are good, but hardware requirements are not met by the HD2, now what does that mean, well it means that HTC did not look ahead, and used the wrong button configuration on the phone, so it is outside the spec of what MS says is required for WP7.
So yes we are Officially screwed out of WP7 because of the buttons on our phones .....
I doubt MS is going to change their requirements for the very few existing WinMo phones that have the CPU and RAM to handle WP7.
The hard resetting you have to do every couple weeks may have more to do with WinMo 6.5.x than the fact that it's a custom ROM. I'm sure we'll get near-stock WP7 ROMs that will function much better than what we currently have. Don't lament before we even have anything on that front.
I don't think wp7 will even be a viable option for most of us anyways (at least the initial release). Very locked down, sounds a lot like the first iphone. I'm hoping they update quickly and open it up (at least every 2-3 months), but I wouldn't hold my breath.
That is why I decided to take the plunge with the hd2. Figured it would be a couple of years before I was ready to jump on wp7. (though that 1.5ghz snapdragon htc sounds interesting and apparently is coming to t-mobile...)

The reason I want to have It Is this:
I read that Windows Mobile 6.5 is based on all the old previous versions, based on CE blabla (I don't know It exactly anymore) so there Is alot of old junk that is not needed anymore.
The new Winmo 7 is totally new so therefore It should be allot faster then all the previous versions.

For me, tinkering is fun, but that is not the main function of my work device. I want it to work, and work well. If that means giving up a couple features, features which I can live without, then I'll play ball. WP7 has been built from the ground up with a very different goal than Windows Mobile, which had the original goal of bringing the PC to a PDA format. I don't need that, and the functionality that is associated with that goal gets in the way of usability for my purposes. If your use cases do not match up with what WP7 is capable of, so be it, but know that the vast majority of customers aren't tinkerers and tweakers.

"alot of old junk" in WM 6.5? Oh yes - like copy & paste, and proper multitasking? If you think that's junk, you'll love WP7.
iPhone OS v1 was rubbish. v4 finally has most of what you actually need and what WM has had for years. Same with Android - the first versions were severly lacking in many areas. Only now is it coming into it's own at v2.2.
Anyone should be able to see that since it's a completely new OS, WP7 will be equally as rubbish as the iPhone and Android offerings were at initial release.
yes, BUT WM still misses a lot of stuff such as gfx libs for better programs...
like ballmer says... they need to lure Developers Developers Developers somehow...
iPhone is #1 because of apps... WM is last only because of apps... and WM7 is taking sooo long because MS's management SUCKS... they seriously need to hire someone better to get thier mobile dept straightened... look at kin... what it could have been if only those devs were still part of wp7...

Well, yes it is now, did not start out that way, but a discussion is one thing ...
But when people have convinced themselves of something , and just want to argue the point it is no longer a discussion ...
1.) HD2 Specs are great, but HTC did not adhere to What MS has released as specs for WP7, so HTC screwed us out of an Official WP7.
2.) MS specs for WP7 were released(but not to the public) before the HD2 was , so MS is not inclined or obligated to change their specs to fit the HD2
3.) We actually have 1 too many buttons on the HD2 but None of them are the almighty "Search" button, so again the HD2 is outside the spec so no official WP7.

I had heard about the 3 button some time early last year, but you are right that may have been after the design and during the production phase of the HD2.
MS did not make an Official release of the specs till I think January of this year, I think that is when it was.
Either way , you can blame HTC, you can blame MS, but, it is true for any piece of technology, CPU's that keep changing sockets, Video Cards that keep changing standards, DVD/Blu-Ray standards the list goes, on ...
I mean providers are not going to change what they decide to to with regards to their specs and requirements just because people scream, I mean why can't I run Iphone OS on my HD2(not that I want to ), because it is not compatible, even though the HD2 out powers most Iphones, and just because Apple says NO.
I suggest, instead of getting all up in arms here, and bashing people for their views you contact MS and HTC and complain to them, not that it will get you anywhere, just as posting here is just gonna start a big discussion, but not fix it anyway.

Yes, sorry I meant more like management a while ago... 1 year ago is still much after iPhone released... they should have done something like WP7 from the beginning and if management wasn't an issue, I doubt we would see two different teams for mobile in the first place: Kin and WP7... I do agree however, management is seeming much better now...
EDIT: also, for hardware keys, all we're missing is the search button... since wp7 will have windows button go to the tiles screen which is also the home, we can map the home screen to search (Kind of implying home page aka bing/search)? HD2 Meego is a success?!

I did not see news of this posted, but I'm not sure how credible the sources are because I cannot find HD2 info on the links posted, maybe you guys can understand this better.

anyway my opinion that MEEGO future is unknown now.
Looks like Nokia plans to release first phone with X86 inside, it can means that ARM versions won't be developed at all (or won't be so cool, like X86)
As well I heard nokia plans to use own programs, which will replace MEEGO standard. It can result in bad quality of this internal programs, because all will use Nokia's own versions.
As well I don't think other manufactures will support MEEGO a lot - they have Android for choose, which is more preferable from market point of view.
Anyway, time will show the truth

Since webOS runs on the Linux kernel, it is open source. The source code must be released (and has been) per the GPL and anyone can port it if they want to, minus any proprietary apps and stuff I guess.

anyway my opinion that MEEGO future is unknown now.

Well, Nokia is now siding with Windows Phone 7, which makes alot of sense from a buisness standpoint, but that leaves MeeGo is a strange situation. Nokia still have plans to release a MeeGo phone, but nothing seems clear after that. Theres no word if another phone manufacturer will pick it up for themselves. Right now MeeGo is in between a rock and a hard place.
t's laggy. Seems need some development but that video shows running Meego is possible on HD2

[Q] Do you guys think we'll be getting WP8?

As above, do you think we'll be getting WP8 on the HD2 when it's released?
yes, why not??
I want so, but there is some drawbacks
Like some hardware restrictions, like low cpu clocks...
And the dammm batery drain...
I'll ditch HD2 for a WP8 device as soon as it comes out
i highly doubt it, but who knows if WP8 can run on HD2, i'm not against it.
but agreed. As soon as WP8 devices become available, i'll try to get my hands on one.
ill not be getting any WP phone unless its fully unlocked like the HD2, the improvement in hardware is minimal anyway and the HD2 does more or less anything the new bloody can do....in saying that, from what ive read the WP8 update would be back ported to current first and second gen WP7 devices, this back port would be limited as some hardware features will not be present....obviously!
the big question is will the HD2 get the update and that I can not answer with even a guess, our ROM cooking overlords will need to answer that one.
Lets look at the history.
Htc Hd2 Windows Mobile handset? yes.
Rumored to receive WP7 as update? Yes.
Test for upcoming WP7 devices? Yes.
Officially announced update for HD2? No.
Latest unofficial update of WP7 for HD2? yes.
It's a possibility of having on it but more of a yes cause I'm assuming Microsoft and their partners are using current Windows Phone handsets for Apollo (WP8). Just like how Microsoft and HTC used the HD2 as a test phone for the "new" OS (Windows Phone 7.0). Also, several Windows Phone devices have similar specs to the HTC HD2.
I waiting on IT!!

will it be much different that the current WP 7.5 thou ??
I have downloaded and installed WIN 8 on a PC and played around with it for a while . Some nice effects with tiles etc clearly moving towards touch screen interaction.
It was after playing with it that i realized WP 7.5 is actually quite a MS pioneer.
I dont think WP8 will be that much different than what we have now to be honest and lets face it , making a call , sending SMS & MMS , email wont change much ...what is there to change.
MS will be focusing on PC and tablets is my guess so i wouldn't hold your breath for a true certified WP version any time soon
Just my 2 cents worth
I think there is a chance, because the HD2 can run so many operating systems. But also the older hardware is probably not going to help either.

I agree with you.windows 8 and wp8 are very good operation. We hd2 owners are happy with seeing wp8 ported on leo.
So do you guys think that WP8 will get a section of its own under the "LEO: HD2" if it is ported to the HTC HD2? Or will it be combined with WP7?

Combined
if it runs WP8 then there would be no use for WP7 on our device and there wouldn't be enough interest to warrant having another forum

I think it should be its own forum. There would still be people who like WP7 and prefer that instead of 8 like people that prefer XP over Windows 7. Then there would be further development of WP7 that branches away from WP8 like current XP customizations and development that branches away from Windows 7.
i agree.
I think the Wp7 (.5) dev will be around for a long time to come. Certainly until the release of the WP8 Apollo
and even then there's the question can it be ported to HD2 and of course what are the requirements of WP8.
Current rumors wont even commit to it being available on current WP7 devices ( Nokia Lumia etc)
Then there's the issue of connecting with WP8 desktop ( and win 7 win XP). Nobody knows for sure what can and cant be done. It would seem MS are slowly turning into apple with regard to their policies. Before you know it we'll be tied to MS market place and MS music etc. Dont think so
I really don't think you will get any better performance . software or battery out of WP8 ( if it comes) SO why worry?
If it loks your after then WP 8 already looks like our WP 7.
If it is really breaking your heart then make a WP8 lock screen

by the same logic we should have android forums for every revision and WM 6 forums and WM 6.5 forums.
the reality is, there is plenty of sub forums
HD2 Android development
HD2 WM development
HD2 WP development
and even the questionable HD2 Linux and meego development
you dont need sub forums for every single thing, IF WP8 is ported to the HD2 i would propose the forum be renamed to WP rather than WP7 people will more than liklely move to WP8 ROMS.
The WP7 Overall development should be renamed WP and incompass all versions of WP
The same
Long live HD2 - just waiting for Windows Phone 8 to be ported

Either a section of its own or sub section (like android 1. SD Card 2 NAND)
I say that as it is likely to take a while to get it really usable as was the case with WP7. So early adopters can converse and solve problems. But WP7 can still keep running along nicely and forum members not have to content with the issues to do with WP8. Personally I hate it when we have completely different aspects mixed in forums - gets just too hard to follow - I used to manage a couple of forums, so speaking from experience.
My strong vote is for a WP7 forum and a separate WP8 forum

Yes but why are you waiting for WP8 to be ported ? I am genuinely interested to know what you think you'll get from WP8 that you don't already have in WP7
One thing i'd like to see is the return of direct contacts syncing via usb . Although im not holding my breath
Even Apple itards can sync their phone with outlook
HD2 is the king!
Hehe,I hope our HD2 can update to wp8.In fact i like the mag2.0.1 batter than this.

HTC HD2 and Windows Phone 8

Well,
What do u guys Think? Can the HD2 handle Wp8? or maybe only Windows Phone 7.8? Im acutally going to base my desicion of buying a new phone upon whether HD2 will get windows phone 8 or not.
All devs busted there asses working on the HD2, i mean what more can we ask from them?
7.8 yes but WP8 no... WP8 have different hardware.... maybe someone cook lite version but look how many problems we have with drivers for now...
so true, there are so many bugs and more and more devs drop their developing for HD2 and moves on to new devices, which means we are in a down hill and it will be harder and harder to fix many bugs and strange behaviours. Correct me if im wrong, but I guess we should be happy if we even get WP 7.8 anytime before summer of 2013

+1 on this.. i'm pretty sure it wont get a wp8. the device is pretty old now. but i believe wp 7.8 will be out soon(almost in sync with hd7) as we have all the drivers. :good:

Sorry, but when exactly is the Summer of 2013? What month? I don't live in the US, and my country doesn't even have seasons, so I'm not sure what month you're talking about.
Well, if the rumors are true, HTC could will release the HTC Rio, a WP8 device witch same specifications that HTC HD2. In this case, HD2 can update to Windows Phone 8 witch the help of developers.
Is it the same Snapdragon ? Same Ram ? Same Sensors? Same Screen?

I wouldnt bet on that if I were you .
We said this so many times before, until I lost count loll. Just because there is another phone with smiliar specs as the HD2 doesnt mean that all we need is move the software and we are good to go...There is alot of diffrences in the code (not to mention Windows CE => Windows NT) between WP 7.5 and WP8, I think we need to rewrite some drivers!!!

Sir, i was not asking, just doing a rethorical question, trying to explain the user that just because it have the same amount of ram, or a Snapdragon 1ghz, doesn't mean it has similar specs.

It´s true. Drivers could be diferent of the HD2, but also is posible that the HTC Rio have got similar chipset and the drivers ports could be easy. I don´t lose the hope.
HTC Rio is a S4 device and our is S1.
There is still hope though, WP8 has more documentation compared to Windows Phone 7.
Nokia Lumia 920 is out today..
Windows phone 8 looks fantastic, i really hope that you guys can make it.
Please make it happen
Flickr and blur free camera shoots would be just great!
no chance for WP8 on HD2... especially when i see today presentation of Lumia 920....
hardware is toooo low for WP8 and too different....
P.S.
i love Smart Shoot on Lumia 920 automatically remove walking people from photography
lumia 900 can't up to WP8, so i think our HD2 can't too ^^

i hope batteray drain not like wp7..
I love it when the " all knowing" members try to make fun of someone's question. Instead of just replying with a "yes" or "no" someone always has to be a real jerk. They probably will make a wp8 ROM for the HTC hd2, because people enjoy it.

It's not just people enjoying it. Sure, it has its weight, but remember, this ain't Android. We have the source code of almost nothing.
If we can find a device with very similar (read, almost all) hardware, we might have a chance of using it's drivers on HD2.
Has it stands, i hardly doubt there will be a single core, adreno200 WP8 device. Even on WP7 we're strugling with driver incompatibility. Why do you think we have such weird battery usage? And that camera trick? That's a exploit that's probably reseting some driver/process and lowering our battery consumption.
Where there's a will, there's a way... it's not impossible, just very difficult and highly improvable.
the porting of 7.8 has been very simple for devs, i think that we have serious possibilities to see WP8 on hd2!
