Phone will not reach 100% (Temporary fix) 06/15/2012 - Atrix 4G General

Hello XDA,
This is a temporary fix for the "phone does not display 100%". Well, not so much of a "fix", more like "hiding" this annoying bug. I have attempted multiple times to come up with a solution, some of them have "worked" some not so much. Well, here is a very simple and reversible "fix" I have applied to my phone. I have been running this setup for about a month now and I do not have the issue.
Note: I am not a developer, or know jack about coding. If you believe any of these instructions are wrong, let me know and I will correct it.
Disclaimer: Even though nothing can possibly go wrong, I am not responsible if your phone decides to quit, etc.
Prerequisites:
Root Explorer app like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.root.browserfree
Your favorite 1% battery monitor that displays on status bar. Try one of these:
Badass Battery Monitor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm
Battery Circle https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.blinkenlights.battery
Instructions:
1. Using Root Explorer app, navigate to /system and locate the build.prop file. See picture:

}
2. Edit the build.prop file's battery steps mod to make the phone display 10% battery steps instead of the cm7 default 1%. It is the line that reads "# use 1% battery steps
ro.product.use_charge_counter= 1% ". Change value I highlighted on green to 10%. See picture:
3. Optional: Go into settings, cyanogenmod, interface, status bar tweaks, battery status style. Change it to "hidden". Use favorite battery monitor app to display current charge on status bar. I use Badass Battery Monitor, but Circle Battery is way more lightweight.

Reserved just in case.

very good app Battery Circle, but closes at times unexpectedly.

Really? I never had a problem with it.

You see, when you are using 10% steps, and your battery reaches the 96% ish, the phone considers it "charged" and will not go past this percentage. I believe this is a safety feature to prevent over charge. Besides, these batteries do not like to be kept at full charge anyways. You will notice that the first 10% will drop faster than usual because your battery was not really at "100%", it was 96%ish.

The batteries do not stop charging at 96%ish. There is no safety built in to stop overcharge by limiting to 96%. They will charge to 100% at which time the battery circuitry (these batteries have what is essentially a mini computer built in) will stop further charging until the battery falls to the pre-determined safe level for charging to commence again. Nothing anywhere says the batteries "do not like to be kept at full charge". I have no idea where you keep getting all these battery "rules" and solutions from, but none of them have ever had any solid foundations, and have served to do nothing other than have people respond with predominantly negative comments. This is why your threads get closed down. Please stop posting battery threads unless you have REAL data or evidence to support your ideas/theories.
Seriously, I am not trying to flame here. You have to see that the incessant obsession with batteries over the last 6-12 months or whatever it has been has grown old for the vast majority of the community.

Cool, I removed that statement, but this thread will stay open. I am not giving out advice that will brick a device. This is a simple way to hide this problem, you know it is a VERY common problem, right?
Readers, do not be discouraged by people like this guy. Some of these members think they are the thumbs up authority on what needs to be discussed in these forums.
If these types of accusations and harassment continues on these threads, this community will continue to lose it's members participation and eventually will die out.
And you dude, get off my sack and go do something else with your time. I am sharing something that works for me and it is up to each individual person to try it out for themselves. Since when it is required to provide references for the stuff you write? What is this, a school paper? I'm gonna stop typing because you p*ssed me off. Go ahead and report me for just sharing my experiences.

I'M NOT FLAMING EITHER, but it would make more sense to keep the content within a single thread instead of having multiple that deal with the same and/or VERY similar subject matter! I fell to understand why it has taken so many threads when you already have a couple in place that you could have modified the content of.
No one is riding you it just seems that you keep starting new threads about the same subject mater and at one point you were making claims about YOUR methods that were already in use and have had thread/threads for since before your first thread was opened!

This ain't a fix. It just rounds charges to a factor of 10. I don't want a 10% battery meter and I don't know why anyone would.

It is not a fix, you convert to 10% steps on rom, but the app displays it as 1%. You would know if you read what I wrote.

For what it's worth, my Atrix (CM7 RC2) gets to 99% relatively fast, but stays at 99% for a lonnnnnnnnng time.
It eventually gets to 100% on it's own, but just needs that extra time on the charger from 99 to 100...

Oh no Johnson again
I respect your persistence but there is no solution. Battery or battery controller is just broken. I doubt the battery because I did some measurement with real instrument.

This kind of information is what I like to read. I officially give up on trying to fix this issue since now I know it is hardware related and not rom or battery. I will leave the instructions in the OP for those of you who would like to try it. Chuck, close this thread. :-D

2150mAh battery = 3 days on one CHARGE without a fat phone!

Finally below 10% juice left. See images. This is the battery from Verizon's site. If ENOUGH of us buy this battery, they'll make cases for it. Right now, they claim there isn't enough of a demand. I see sooooooo many people complain about battery life, but don't want the 3500mAh battery, due to its size. This IS the happy medium. Lets go folks!

This battery is only a little more than 1/3 added juice than the stock battery, so if I can get 3 days, stock users can get almost 2! The key is to use setcpu and create a profile for"screen off" and set the max cpu in that profile to 460 or so.
Good luck!

I just went out and bought the battery based on this post.

You guys are smart! I have the 8/1 leak but just about to upgrade to the new "official" leak. Yes, it's the hydra v1.0 ocuv kernel @1.15GHz. S-off, with clockworkmod 2.5.0.5. The theme is the manup revolution theme, but I'm not sure I'll use that one again because the battery meter in the notification bar is not accurate and when I try to change it, I get issues.
The main thing, besides a good bump charge, is the setcpu profile. I'm running setcpu in "on demand". Make one profile for "screen off" and make your max cpu 460 and leave the minimum at 245 or whatever. I made a 2nd profile for battery less than 25% that makes the max 560MHz. I've had NO non-responsiveness. Just always there when I need it and even with the "screen off" profile set to low CPU speed, I still hear my phone vibrate before I get the email in outlook, at work.
Any more questions, just let me know!
P.S. Check my sig to see if it answers anything else you want to know about my set-up.
EDIT: XDA members can get SetCPU for free here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419

This battery is a great piece of hardware. It allows the phone to lay flat while protecting the camera lens and as jermaine151 mentions, there is more phone to hold onto while typing. This is a great buy and I say that even though I paid the extra cost by going through HTCpedia prior to Verizon making this available.

I'm going to swing by the store on my way home and see if its available. I've gotten my stock battery to last through an entire day with mediocre use, so I would love to be able to use this and get over a day with heavy use.

you should note you had 3g/blue tooth off that whole time which is I'm guessing how you achieved the 2% cell standby. Also the phone was only awake for 7mins/hr
i like the way it sits in my hand with the battery, give a nice feel. before the phone was to light/

This is from a normal usage of my phone. As you can see from the graph the last few hours were me connected to wi-fi constantly, tweeting, fiddling and browsing forums. Yes a quick drain but this is a phone!
My point of this post is compare this to tablets and netbooks. The majority last 6 hours, tops. The SGS II is a dual core, amoled phone. It was always going to be a beast on the battery. However if you use it wisely, ie only have Wi-Fi on when necessary, the phone lasts as this phone should.
It out performs most tablets and for the relative size of both screen and battery I would say that's hugely impressive.
Looking forward to your comments.

Your post is refreshing because of the following:
1) Clearly shows the display is the biggest drainer of battery. Anything else means you simply didn't setup your phone right or have some rogue app chewing stuff up.
2) You're not going bonkers with "OMFG my phone only lost 0% over 4 hours" and then post a graph that shows the screen was on for 2 seconds. Uh, well... duh! Completely stupid and pointless, glad your graph actually reflects real usage and battery drain.

now im gonna say this,
you people really shouldnt compare battery time like tht. Its the screen on time you should compare!! its far more accurate than this. i can get around 3h of constat use and connected to wifi. this is screen on time.
what's average screen time in hours for most users? i've been reading about 4 hours plus or minus 1. 8 hours is unreasonable on one charge? i like to read books so i am wondering about this. i highly anticipate this phone but the n9 kind of looks hot too if the rumor is true alien dalvik allows android apps on meego.
So what? You kinda never used your phone. Surf the internet connected via 3g and come back to tell me
So you use your phone less than my grandma and hardly get two days out of the battery?
Great, that's nothing to be proud of.
With this usage my Omnia7 lasted for a week but the SGSII drains harder than my kitchen sink.
I noticed light consumes unusually lot of power too .. I recommend not using it as torch. White screen works just as fine for me (in total darkness). It seems they put in even stronger LED then in previous models .. and it better be used just for the moment as photographic flash. Battery voltage drops significantly .. and it slowly returns after the LED is turned off .. which means it's really strained a lot.
I bet i can get 2 days of battery in the way you used your phone. Screen was rarely on, so you just showed us that you can get a day and a half of stand-by.
At the risk of being accused of grandma phone usage im actually fairly happy.. The wifi sharing thing is a ***** so axed that.
This is with stock but rooted ke7

Long Lasting Battery!!

Hello Everyone,
I am seriously tired with the really little battery backing up time if I do heavy usage...So here is a really cool and serious method on how to improve the battery backing time.
Remember...Try the method with your Risk..You will the sole responsible if anything happens to your battery(although nothing will happen if you follow the instructions properly).
So here it goes:
1. Drain your battery to 0%.
2. Remove the battery.
3. In a polythene or a ziplock pouch place the battery in it and safely secure the pouch or polythene.
4. Now keep the battery in a DEEP FREEZER...(Brand Recommended: LG )
5. Let the battery remain in the DEEP FREEZER for 12-18 hours.
6. After the time has passed, remove the battery from the deep freezer, unpack it from the pouch or polythene, and let it come to a warm temperature.
In the mean time, while the battery is outside, there will be water droplets around the battery...dont worry its perfectly safe, but make sure that you clean them.
Now place it in your phone and charge it...You will see the difference...
How it works:
If you are a chemistry student or if you have learnt chemistry, the battery contains lithium fluid, which after a period of time starts to become more liquidish..so the bonds weaken, and therefore less battery backing time...If you keep it in the deep freezer, the bonds become more powerful and hence they 'Handshake' more perfectly. So therefore a better battery backing time.
I did this trick, and it really works...so go ahead and try it!!!
Anybody tested?wanna try,but I always get backfire by doing silly stuff.and as I rember.I saw a warning that the battery shouldn't be cooled below the temperature of 4°C

LoL.....batteries musnt exceed the temperature above 40 degrees....cooling wont harm it in anyway!!!! and i tried...it seriously powerups ur battery!!!
I get 4 - 5 Days out of my battery! So i don't have to do this YET. Really thanks for this. I will try it when my battery starts to be weak.

Freezing will actually damage the battery in the long run. The same holds true for totally draining it.
Now, this method might work in the short term but not in the way you're thinking. Freezing the battery will actually slow down the chemical processes, which results in what could be described as undervoltage at the hardware level.

The "all of the sudden" battery fix on ICS

I have been using my s2 only 1 day on GB so i cant really tell you was the battery life good or bad there, but i i have some news for ICS
stock ROM users.
I was actually really depressed by the ICS battery life (i upgraded from GB same day i bought brand new S2), battery life was terrible,
turning on/off syncing, mobile data, gps etc etc helped a bit, but not that much. i still couldent get full day out of it with moderate use.
Again, im on stock 4.0.3 atm.
And then, a miracle.
Let me say right away, i am aware that these types of batterys (i have stock one btw) dont react on this whole "fully discharge then recharge" thing, but i do think now Android ICS as a system does! Cuz it was exactly what i did-i said what the heck doesent hurt to try and i was playing games like crazy when battery was on 10 or less percent so it wld shut down. then, i connected charger and used as normal on charger until it was fully juiced. repeated 3-4 times and what do you know... i now get 50% OR MORE WITH THE SAME BATTERY!
I am not really sure what happend there. Did battery gauge reset? Did ICS "learned" my battery properly? I dont know. All i know is that i am now able to get trough whole day (i get up 7:00AM, go to sleep round 01:00) with only 1 full charge. I dont even bother turning off wifi sometimes when i go out and dont need it.
I have been also reading around the web that some people got the same result. No calibration trys, pulling battery etc etc...just let it go trough few cycles and let system/phone "calibrate by itself".
Not exactly sure if this is a solution, bug, feature or whatever. I just thought it was worth writing to you guys
cheers, loop
why dont u share some screenshots
np mate, but in evening or tomo morning when i come home
Well, you actually shortened your battery life span by draining your battery to nothing, you should probably google what happens when you drain lithium batteries, and how it affects capacity, and not just
dont react on this whole "fully discharge then recharge" thing
Click to collapse
You probably did reset your fuel gauge as your phone had no power to hold the gage memory, but you could of saved yourself a lot of battery capacity, by using search and finding out how to reset the battery gauge on the Samsung galaxy s2. Hint* search extweaks and Siyah kernel.
Anyway at least other people who read this, hopefully learn and do it all the easiest and battery efficient way and not

Hope this helped, and for future reference do not drain lithium batteries, whether it is your phone, laptop, ps3 controller. Try not to get it under 50% for the best efficiency, but the more you drain it to minimum charge the faster it degrades.
Did you uninstall anything? Did you change any settings? Sounds to me like wakelocks that were removed more than ICS "learning" your battery.
Take it like this: i upgraded to ICS over GB and did full wipe. First day i installed lets say 20+ apps that i use. mostly utilities, few games.
In this period of "recovery" i only updated few apps, installed GTAIII and Flipboard.
Let me make this perfeclty clear as i stated in OP and as deniso wrote: i am aware of todays batterys and how do they work. i am not senior android user but i know my way around,so as i stated, i know i dident "FIX" the battery itself. But i still think the main problem here is not the battery itself, its how ICS uses it.
However this:

is just... funny. "try not to" ok i get it, but below 50% is when u need your phone the most, should i carry a portable generator with me? no offense.
Please, do not throw rocks at me. I am aware what i wrote, and i am aware that it doesent makes sense with todays batterys and smartphones.
however,i still do have my better battery life, whatever u say or dont say.
Ill make some screenies when i come home.
Ty all for your feedback.
I said TRY not to, I personally use my phone all day and my battery only gets down to about 75% -85% at the end of the day, so it takes nothing special for our phones, unless you do heavy gaming or movie watching all the time.
And what I said, which wasn't throwing rocks at you, is that you probably just reset your fuel gauge as there was a lack of power to the memory chip, and like I said in my first post, Search EXTWEAKS and Siyah kernel as they have that exact function in them which does not require you to drain your battery below critical values or at all.
hello again, just posting screenies that i promised

(its in croatian, but you can see what is important)
So as i said before. This is roughly really 50% MORE then what i was getting first few days on ICS. now, i dont know still if this is very good or average, but
it gets me trough day for sure. As u can see, i posted "screen on" time, cuz i was not getting even half of that before and i still have 34% left!
The day was filled with 5-6 emails, i watched 4 youtube videos, did cca 29 mins on surfing and cca 30-35mins in plants vs zombies. few sms, few calls.
So, im not playin smart here or anything, i just have more batter with whatever i did, and it makes me happy
Cheers
You getting more battery after 3 days could quite simply be due to the fact that you flashed new firmware and it always takes a few days for the kernel and modem to 'settle in'. You will never get a true indication of battery drain straight after flashing firmware.
And to the guy above who said he can use his phone the whole day and it never falls below 75%, wow!
I would love to know what firmware, kernel/modem combo you're using.

The 1% Battery Game..

OK, so I'm at work today, and a bit bored. As today we expect lots of rain in NYC, and I don't expect any customers. So, I have a little "game" we can play here on XDA. Well, not really a game since it can take a while. But, let's see how you're device does. The rules of this game are very simple. Let's see how long your device will go before dropping a single percentage fromm 100% to 99%. And with your data/phone signal turned on, since it'll last an even longer time with it off. I'll start it off, mine is everything enabled(just no use at all), right before it dropped to 99%..

you can change how fast it starts, and other doze settings.. I didn't change anything in doze though.
How did you time this to show this info at 99 ?

the old fashioned way, turning on the screen for a quick look. after a while, I stopped looking after an hour and 15 min, since it always made it that far, and started looking at it closer to one hour 30 minutes.

What's your set up ? I've tried a lot of different kernels and settings, but IMO, hellscore kernel flashed stock with no additional modifications delivers insane battery life compared to anything I've used. Toss in kernel auditor, undervolt and mess around with some settings and it goes even further.
Instead of a 1 min battery life, we should make a thread of who has the longest SOT off total battery or something.

Pure Nexus, with Despair kernel, but none of their setups. Setup is my own, from Trinity kernel of past.. ondemand/deadline with ondemand set up with a 15000 sampling rate and a 98% up threshold. Runs and performs better this way
I never ever undervolt, but do overvolt on occasion.
And overall sot, na. I actually kinda do agree with you, but its way too easy to cheat sot.

no.. your thinking of Morfic. he's the creator of Trinity kernel, I just did all the testing. he was close to TeamWhiskey, I learned of them later on.

Yeah that who I was thinking of I haven't seen anything from him in a while now, not really followed since nexus s days.

I recall there are tricks to get a little extra in the tank at 100%. Like charge to 100%, drain 1% and charge again several times.
I don't really know if the resulting difference in charge shows between 100 or 99 or spread out some other manner.
I'm not accusing you of anything, just wondering if 100% is the best starting point for the experiment.
Then again, starting at a different point brings it's own challenges in starting and rrecording the experirment.
Obviously best estimate comes from a longer period in standby,.
On the third hand, as the title suggests, it's not strictly an experiment, also a game.... and this one is quick and interesting.
At any rate, I'm sure you have very lean standby power use, better than me.

I actually charge until there are 0mA coming in(CurrentWidget). that's when I consider 100% charged. normally, when the phone shows 100%, there is still up to 400mA still entering the device. now I'm starting to give up some of my secrets :silly:
This really isn't a good way to judge battery life. Once a phone reaches 100% the charging stops and the battery discharges some before the device starts charging again. During this time the battery will report 100% but may be slightly below that. This is why sometimes you take a phone off the charger and it drops from 100% to like 97% almost instantly.
Looking back its kinda funny that older phones only read battety in 10% increments. How did we ever survive.
[Edit: I see this was addressed the same time I posted.]
Do I win? I bet no one else got above 3000% and below 0%
