Discussion of At&T Galaxy S III for non-US GSM users - Galaxy S III General

Hello all,
Having observed the discussions and useful information in the similarly titled thread for US users, I decided to start this one for those of us outside the US who are interested in the AT&T variant.
I've already pre-ordered and am eagerly awaiting its release. There are a few questions in my mind such as performance comparisons with the international version, ease of unlocking, modder support, etc. Anyone found any reviews of the north american variant yet?

I guess unlocking and unbranding are not going to be problematic after developers recieves the phone. It should perform roughy the same as the internationaö version due to slightly higher clock speed. S4 uses more memory so that doesn't bring much difference either.

I'll have mine here soon. I'll post once I get to latin america and can test it out, around 1 July.

How did you preordered? You paid the no-contract price?

Cannot find off-contract atrix at ATT webpage

Hi all,
I am not in U.S. and want to buy an atrix.
I asked one of my friends in U.S. to buy one and hope to unlock it to use it.
But my friend told me the ATT web page only showed on-contract price(499-300=$199) to him, which is same to me. We cannot find the off-contract price page as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952384
He also called ATT local store but was also told currently there is no off-contract atrix.
But I do see so many friends in the forum pre-ordered off-contract atrix.
I don't know what is wrong.
Anyone can help me?
Thanks
The Atrix wlll be available at AT&T stores this Monday the 21st. Off contract price is now listed at $499. Best Buy and Amazon should have them soon also. Of course it remains to be seen if it can be unlocked. You may want to hold off until people get a chance to play with it although I know it is difficult to wait. I hear they are working on quadcore and much faster processors for next year. I hope to have my Atrix on monday.
Same here, iam living in Europe searching for a way to get a new nextgen android device asap.
...currently comparing atrix and sgs2.
sgs2 release one month later than atrix.
However it seems not stronger than atrix.
sgs2 has gyro 2.3rom, but no hdmi
moto has fingerprint reader, but locked bl, no gyro, 2.2rom
hope update to 2.3 or 2.4 soon
really hard to choose
currently I prefer atrix. as I guess tegra 2 is more powerful.
hope to see benchmarks of sgs2 for further comparison
$499 does not seem to be that expensive at all. The Nexus S is still at $529 at Best Buy, who will then buy that ?! (OK, you get 2.3 and unlocked bootloader) but from a hardware point of view the Atrix is probably much better off.
I also agree that $499 is not that expensive. But I am afraid not everyone can get an Atrix in that price.
From the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952384
, it seems only Premier users of att can pre-order an off-contract atrix.(at even lower price).
But the $499 price atrix does not show to other users in ATT web page. at least, I can not see.
Ok, the price for nexus s is too much now.
What i didnt liked at sgs is the cheap look and feel with this hardware. Maybe similar at sgs2...atrix seems to be the winner here.
Did anyone read about which camera wins in this battle?
What you guys think about the display comparison?
CPU power is not so important i think, anything dualcore is kind of overpowered these days.
What really sucks with the atrix is this encrypted bootloader.
I wanna use current custom roms without apps that no one needs, or at least the option to use things like launcher pro.

Galaxy S4 Question about US Market

Hello everyone who is eagerly anticipating to get their hands on an S4! I am aware of the fact that the U.S. version of the phone is going to be the quad-core version, but that's only for phones from carriers, correct? I really wanna get the octa-core version, albeit without taking advantage of 8 cores simultaneously. So, can we order the international version from a U.S. online retailer, when it's released?
Its not really known yet because we haven't even reached the pre-order date yet, however, there are several threads that have this question asked in them already. If you keep an eye on those threads I think your question will be answered as soon as someone knows.
Thanks, man! I figured there might be a couple of threads about that, but I didn't look around since it's easier to post a new thread. Anyway, sorry about that.

Sweet! Thanks! Even though I'm impatient, I'll have to wait for a while because I really don't want to be paying that much. Hopefully it will drop to $640 as it was projected.
I'm going to the US in july, and since here in Brazil we have many taxes, i'll buy my S4 in there. But I would like to know if I will find the octa-core ones on physical shops or they will sell the octa core one just in online shops?

You should be able to find both in shops non carrier shops should have them, if the carriers don't.
Not all customer service may know the difference between phones. So check the phone before buying.

Where can I get an unlocked 64GB Octo S4?

I'm currenty in the USA, and travel internationally. I'd like to get the S4, but can't seem to find a source for an OEM, unlocked, 64GB Octo-core version. Does anyone know where I can purchase one? Some sites have the Octo-core but only 16GB, or they have the 64GB but only the quad-core. I'm not one to upgrade my phone every 2 weeks (sarcasm), so this will be an investment for me. No carrier-branded versions, or locked ROMs (I do flash my phones).
Thanks!

Thanks for the link!
I want the latest and greatest because it'll make me feel better about myself and will hopefully make me be accepted by others.
In all seriousness, I've been reading reviews and comparisons, and although the performances are very close, I'm concerned about ... I can't think of the term, but "un-upgradable" after 6-12 months. I'm currently using a Samsung Droid Charge from 2011, and while it was a nice and capable phone then, it still functions as a nice phone now. Only problem is I've reached a ceiling as far as upgradability. I am stuck with Android v2.3.6 (Eclipse ROM), while "current phones" are running Android 4.2+. I'm a very heavy user of the phone and many of its features, and find that I'm often coming across performance issues.
That's just a brief reason why I'd prefer to get the Exynos version. I'm open to suggestions, but I certainly don't want a USA carrier-branded/bloated/locked version. Those days for me are over (the proverbial ball and chain are gone).

Team hacksung,
the team behind all the s3/s2/note2 ports of cm have pledged not to work with exynos hardware, and Cyanogen himself who used to work at Samsung is only supporting qualcomm galaxy s4s, the performance difference is honestly negligible, and without fm radio, there is no benefit (if any a con) to get the international s4, Cyanogen currently works on a tmobile galaxy s4 btw

I was actually considering that as a reason not to get the Exynos, and since the performance is negligible, I just might get the quad-core, for the sake of customizability and upgradability. Seems to be a waste of potential technological opportunity.

Oh, right. I forgot, the Droid Charge is a Verizon-branded phone. I haven't had Verizon since shortly after I got the phone, but I'm still using the phone... offline (complicated story).
I'll be using a different carrier while in the USA (without a contract), as I'll be traveling to other countries, so Verizon wouldn't be an option anyway.
At $890, you could literally buy a 16GB Nexus 4 And a 32 GB nexus 10, or a 64gb htc one and many accessories (wifi hdd), or 2 nexus phones, just keep in mind that the s4 is only the best by spec, the htc one has better speakers and screen and build quality plus it is already out and $200 cheaper, feel free to wait for the s4 if you are set on it but it is priced to much like a iPhone IMHO
And you have a proper warranty when buying a htc one since it isn't a grey import

Because the Samsung has a replaceable battery along with the memory card slot. I use my phone for my business and I CANNOT be strapped to a charger all day. Being able to swap batteries in the middle of the day, no matter where I am, makes Samsung the only viable game in town. You can keep your shiny cool aluminum sealed cell phone. I'll take the good 'ole removable plastic backed one every time.
OK, btw I have a s3 and I understand the convenience of removable batteries and storage

You have to keep in mind that we're in a non-US phone forum. It also happens to dwarf all US S3 forums in terms of development. What I mean by that is although CM may be working on the US version, I'm pretty sure there's going to be a huge contingent of devs for the Exynos version. Just take a look at the AT&T or T-Mobile forums for the Note2 or S3. They don't have any dev support. AndreiLux, my fav dev, has already committed to the Exynos.
Personally, I don't care for CM. It's my personal opinion that CM is best suited for lower-end phones that need the purity of Android without the bloatware because of limited tech specs. If you have a beastly S4 or HTC One, why bother.
My advice would be to get a 16GB Exynos and wait until the development starts happening. Also get ready for 128GB Micro SD Cards. I hear they're rolling out first half of this year.

I respect your opinion but as I see it, pure Android is faster, slimmer and overall technically better, meanwhile Touchwiz is more consumer oriented and has several quirks and bugs.
Since we are in a developer-oriented forum, several folks will want that. It never hurts to have wider support/more options.
And AOSP in a beastly phone runs even better.
I wouldn't bet on the Exynos version, not many developers will join the fray after all the BS Samsung has pulled recently, and their dismal support of their own SoC
Since you namedropped him: Andrei has mentioned some valuable things about the Octa that might help steer the decision one way or another (he has the Octa variant):

Qualcomm has great resources for developers and is widely accepted. Most likely the next Nexus devices will be based on the latest Snapdragons.
Edit: @ OP: You might wanna read the S4 forums for a while, there are some issues with the screen for some folks. Just to make sure you have it in mind
OT: Glebun, go mini-mod somewhere else, please. Your posts serve no purpose in this context for more than adding 1 extra post to your count.
That's what the report button is for, if you reply, you give a thread more relevance - which is counter intuitive to the whole purpose of your post.
I didn't even know you could get the S4 in 64GB so soon. Some websites were saying that only the 16GB version is available right now. Or maybe they were talking about the US-variant.
I read somewhere that the octa-core version will get a software update which will increase performance by 10%. Here's the link; http://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-to-boost-performance-of-galaxy-s4-202912/
On a blazing fast phone (which is blowing all the benchmarks out of the water), a 10% increase in performance is significant!!!

Technically you can already get that performance by using the A15s only.
My guess is that the performance improvement statement is rather a bad understanding of the graph, the point that they were trying to make is that HMP should bring the performance advantages of running solely on A15s at the reduced power consumption of CPU migration.
HMP should get the same full performance at 50% less power consumption, according to those figures and that specific scenario.
The author of the article was overreaching on his statement, it does not mean is a general improvement or a performance unlock.
I guess whatever the case, they'll certainly be bringing an increase in power. That's good news for all (those on the Snapdragon processor shouldn't complain since that is already quite fast)!

Is having LTE only a concern in the USA? How about Europe (outside GB) and Central America? If one travels and lives outside the USA, what would be recommended (for a 64GB Galaxy S4)? I realize this is an American based forum, but I also know there are a lot of people with insight into international phone variants, different frequency bands, and international carriers (which is not my area of expertise).
Just an update, I've contacted Negri Electronics and Expansys, (UnlockedMobiles and Handtec only seem to offer the 16GB version), as they seem to be the few websites that actually have the 64GB Octo-core unit on their website. Nobody seems to have this in stock, and they all say they're waiting on more information from Samsung regarding availability. So it seems a 64GB Octo-core GS4 is nowhere to be found.

[Q] Verizon Delevoper Edition.

All,
Last year samsung released their developer VZW N2 in 6-8 weeks.
Any info on the N3 dev edition ( 16 or 32 GB - I assume it will be black) ?
Any possible issues with availability of the device ( the S4 was out of stock for "months").
I see that there is not much hope that devs can crack this device after release -last year N2 was jailbroken in less than 14 days after release
Update:
Black ,32GB ,storage, 3200mah
Reps are saying first part of nov.
Lets see which developers will support this device
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SM-N900VMKEVZW-specs
VZW is only offering the 32 GB version, I really argued with them about it and got transferred to their marketing department that makes such decisions, had to leave a message and nobody called me back of course. I would assume a Dev version would be 32 or 64 but there's no way you'd see a 16GB version. Maybe the 64gb version is not available because (I read this somewhere on XDA) only the 32gb version supports LTE. The non - LTE chip requires more memory to give the same performance as the 32gb LTE version.

Aha,
thanks.
We will call u back.sure.
I am assuming that that dev edition will be avail soon - a couple of weeks after the mainstream edition. 64 would be nice, but oh well..
If dev cannot crack this open I will have to wait for the dev edition. Safe strap works on S4 but if prefer the real unlock.
N2 was (is a beast) as far as development goes.
any heads up for the timeframe of release?
thanks

Verizon's GN2 Developer Edition went up mid December last year so who knows it could come sooner. But don't expect a 64GB version we won't get it.

If you buy a Verizon Developer Edition through Samsung, can you still get the Asurion insurance through Verizon?
In the past when I changed phones on my account I simply updated the info with Verizon so they could or should know what I was covering/insuring with them. So long as the phone is functioning at the time you add it you "should" not have any issues.
Do we know for sure vz will be getting a developer edition? I haven't heard a thing about it.
Ive read rumors on interwebs saying both will and wont get dev edition. I withdrew my preorder to wait and see if we can get it unlocked. I have faith in adam outler. He seems good at sticking it to verizon. If dev edition comes out first I'll go that way. I've experienced safe strap and theres nice features and drawbacks to it. I don't think there will be a Dev edition. Unfortunate.... I think I'm gonna give the g2 a try..a Lil smaller than I want....but its not locked down.
My plan is to buy the retail version then sell it if the Dev drops or return it if there is an announcement within two weeks.
For those with more Patience it might just be worth the wait!

I'm with ya on that I'm just gonna buy the Note 3 and let the devs work their magic. I'm sure they'll be able unlock it or at least have a work around like kexec. But if all fails I'll just sell mine to a stock user and go for the developer edition.

Adam is done with samsung devices...especially since they went back to qualcom processors. If the N3 had a Exynos processor Relekdev might have a chance. However Qualcom processors utilize qfuses, which once blown, make unlocking a encrypted bootloader about 99% impossible.

yes it is. the difference is that it has access (currently) to loki, a tool that will allow a development community to grow, however it can and will be patched.

North American ZE551ML 1080p (2.3Ghz/4GB/64GB)

In case people didn't already know.

I have a "review unit" and can confirm this model 100% spec wise. I hate to sound like a tool and say "I cant talk about it", but I cant post anything till the review date specified buy the supplier. just trying to save a few people from buying lesser versions on Ebay, Amazon etc.

Based on the Newegg listing and other sources, I'm guessing two USA variants to start -
ZE551ML 1080p 2.3GHz/4GB/64GB - $299 (Black/Gold/Red/Silver)
ZE551ML 1080p 1.8GHz/2GB/16GB - $199 (Black/Silver)
We'll see come Monday.
They didn't tell us pricing yet. Id honestly like to know before I post my review though. In my opinion, thats a MAJOR "pro" for the phone if its close to $300.

True, it's just my guess on pricing.
Do folks here think it's unlikely that we'll see the 5" ZE500CL version for US release on May 18th?

Its hard to say. I don't have anything concrete I can verify a 1.6Ghz /2GB/16GB model (or ZE500CL).
The Black version does have a 16GB option: N82E16875220003
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rebbr=1&cm_re=zenfone2-_-75-220-003-_-Product
As well as the Silver version: N82E16875220004
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rebbr=1&cm_re=zenfone2-_-75-220-004-_-Product
though they are listed as "ZE551ML" it may be a typo or mistake due to Newegg not having 100% of the Information from ASUS yet.
Lets just say ASUS has not made things easy in regard to launch dates and model numbers... this is exactly Why I started this Thread. I just wanted to let people know that there IS in fact a "North American ZE551ML 1080p (2.3Ghz/4GB/64GB)" coming our way In the US very soon and to not jump the gun and buy stuff from random scalpers for inflated prices.

ZE551ML has 2GB/4GB and various ROM and CPU speed options available. The 550ML is 1.8GHz/2GB/16GB only, differentiated from 551ML only by the 720P display (same SoC, possibly under clocked GPU)
550CL is a different phone - 5.0"/1.6GHz/720P different GPU.
Somebody else said the phones on Newegg would be International version.
Can you please, please confirm that they have USA version and not International version?
How's this version going to differ from the ZE551ML I purchased off of ebay? Apart from the 32GB's of storage, specs are identical? Plus, all LTE bands I require are present? The only con I see is the price, but having only paid $340 including shipping, it doesn't seem like I made a mistake assuming the $300 NA price tag, plus tax of course.
i can tell you that the zenfone 2 2gb 1080p version will start at 199 as confirmed by asus north America on twitter

I think this is the variant I pre-ordered from Amazon before they removed the page to it. Their release date was late May to early June.
Edit: It was the 551ML with 1080P+2GB RAM.

I really couldn't tell you the difference. I dont know much about any of the other Models except for the one I have here. I hope they price the Model they sent me around $300-$400. That would make it a killer deal! But like I said, I dont know the official pricing yet. I would assume Newegg would be selling them for "Retail price" when they launch, what ever that price may be?
so when is your review embargo over?
What I want to know is whether the modem is the same between the TW/WW version and the US version with the firmware being the only real difference.

How much storage does your model have, if you can share that much.
Also, is there any way you can see if it has the same modem as the other ZE551ML models (Intel 7262 + Intel 2230 according to Asus). If so then we should be able to flash US firmware to at least the WW and TW versions.

The only difference in the WW, TW and US versions are basically the AT&T Band 17 for US customers. And no, you can't flash anything to change it. I've been using the WW Z3580 4GB version on T-Mobile for the last 3 weeks and it's great. What everyone is praying for is that Asus release another update to coincide with the US release that will sort out the Lollipop 5.0 battery drain (update to 5.1 would be ideal) whilst in use (standby is great). If they don't address it the casual consumer will run away because few people will know how to tweak it properly to get decent battery life. It's a fantastic phone.

Any idea how it is on AT&T's network?

I don't. I'm on T-Mobile and it's perfect. But AT&T use Band 17 quite extensively so unless you live in an area where they don't I suggest you wait for the US model which will cover that.
Yes, LTE Band 17 is AT&T's original band. It would make absolutely no sense to use a device without band 17 on AT&T, unless one does not really care if they get LTE or not.
