[REF] Ultimate X8 Customization Guide! - XPERIA X8 General

Welcome to the Utimate Customization Guide for the XPERIA 8!
-----------------
Basically, this is a Reference Guide on how to Customize your X8 (or any Android device) to the MAX! (But this guide
will focus on what works for the X8, not what doesn't )
I will include a quick FAQ section too for all the questions you need answered. (e.g What is MDPI etc?,
What is Theme Chooser, etc)
So, let's get started shall we?
-----------------
Themes (Most Popular / Smooth)
Here we've got the Themes Index.
Now, I'm not copying & pasting these over.
I've tried all of these and I will give my take on them here.
I'll only list a few but if you want a complete list then I will refer you to this thread
Also, this app is where I find new themes to try out.
It's been on the Market for quite a while now so I decided to share it here too.
Now, on to the list. The TOP 5 (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER) Most Popular / Smooth
5. A-Chep: CM7| ICE Cream Sandwich | MDPI | LDPI
This one has got to be everybody's favourite? Probably the best ICS theme for MDPI / LDPI out there yet!

Well A-Chep is the man! I love this Sense theme, really awesome for when you want to Sens-ify your X8!
Available for DOWNLOAD on GPlay and XDA
3. UpwardSpiral: CM7| Minimal Magic MDPI
One of my favourites, this is a really simple minimalistic white GB theme.
Available for DOWNLOAD on GPlay!
2. R3Ds Themes: CM7 iKaNDee MDPI | HDPI
Nice theme for users who really love eye-candy UI's.
Available for DOWNLOAD on GPlay!
1. kGill7: CM7| Naked Simplicity MDPI | HDPI (?)
Available for DOWNLOAD on GPlay and XDA!
-----------------
Homescreen Tips!
Welcome to the homescreen tips sections. Here I'll show you how to make your homescreen look and feel the cleanest, smoothest and fastest!
Let's get right into it!
1. Try not to use a Live Wallpaper. It will drain battery and reduce performance.
2. Use a light launcher for best performance, if you want more features then use a launcher of your choice and reduce performance in it's Settings and use a Minimalistic theme.
3. Heavy Launchers will REDUCE PERFORMACE!
4. Try not to use the Default Launcher that ships with your device or ROM. Generally these are slow and have very few effects, customization options.
5. Stuck for inspiration? Check out XDA Member "tohno"'s thread!
Located here.
Also check out this thread from XDA's "Android Themes" Board.
-----------------
Widgets (Lag Free / Popular)
This part of the thread will focus on Widgets.
Not just the "most popular" widgets (because we obviously know about them ) but also the ones that don't lag your launcher and cause it to crash.
Let's get started!
5. LevelUp Studio| 2.0.1+ | Beautiful Widgets | PAID
Oh come on! This has been around since the Vikings. I mean, its the most popular "Widget Pack" on Android along with "Fancy Widgets". Beautiful Widgets is a collection of "Beautiful looking Widgets" with thousands of themes to choose from. It's got loads of cool effects and honestly, it's worth the money. Definitely worth a look!
Buy now on Google Play!
4. Android Does| 1.6+ | Fancy Widgets | FREE & PAID
If you didn't like Beautiful Widgets or you're looking for something a little bit different then I can assure you, you might want to check Fancy Widgets out. Even though Beautiful Widgets gets more frequent updates than this, I recommend you check it out. It's based around the same concept as Beautiful Widgets. But if I were to choose between the two, it'd be Beautiful Widgets.
Download now for free or buy it on Google Play!
3. Devmil| Version varies with device! | Minimalistic Text | FREE & DONATE
Okay, I get it. You're all fed up with all this premade-clock and weather widget bazaar! Let's move on then, shall we? This is "Minimalistic Text". One of the most popular widget creator apps on GPlay. It gives you a crap ton of options to create your own widgets but with keeping a Minimal look and feel. Try it for yourself.
Download now for free on Google Play, or Donate to show your appreciation!
Also, check out Chris95X8's thread for his MT widget! Pretty Awesome!
2. Cédric Depoortère | 2.1+ | Circle Battery Widget | FREE
Name explains it all. It's a Minimal 1x1 Battery % Widget! Sweet!
Download now for free on Google Play!
1. A-Chep | 2.1+ | acWidgets: Your Calendar | FREE
This one is my favourite calendar widget. Not because the developer is part of our very own X8 section but because it has an awesome UI!
Download now for free on Google Play!
Also, check out the other widget(s) in the acWidgets series! Here!
Don't worry! Don't fret!
There WILL be more widgets added but I have to test them first!
Thanks for reading this section anyway! Check back soon.
-----------------
F.A.Q
Q. What is LDPI, MDPI, HDPI (etc)?
A. These are short for xDPI (x being L,M,H) DPI means Dots Per Inch. The X8 has an MDPI compatible screen.
Q. What is Theme Chooser?
A. Theme Chooser is pretty self explanatory.
It's a Theme Selector application included in CM7 & CM9 ROMS which allows the user to select a theme of their choice. Themes must be installed first.
Q. How do I add/install themes compatible with Theme Chooser?
A. Installing a theme is as simple as downloading an app. Simply find the APK of the theme and install it!
Q. How do I apply a Theme Chooser theme?
A. Open the Theme Chooser app and Scroll to the theme of your choice and press the "Apply" button. Wait.
Congratulations, you've now applied your theme! (Reboot may be needed to refresh SystemUI!)
Q. Where do I get Theme Chooser?
A. You cannot install Theme Chooser by copying it to /system/app.
Your ROM must be compatible with it. Most CM7 & CM9 ROMs will have this pre-installed.
Q. What is a Widget?
A. A widget is like a mini-app on your homescreen. Think of you home screen as a container for all these mini-apps.
For example; You can download a clock widget and that would simple be a clock within your homescreen.
Same with a Power Control widget. It's usually for quick access to feature(s) of an app from your homescreen.
Is your question not here?
If not, then do these steps before posting!
1. Read this F.A.Q again.
2. Look through Lucastan96's ULTIMATE FAQ GUIDE (which is stickied) in X8 Q&A.

Nice man

Actually, widgets are mini-apps, they aren't mini-desktops (the homescreen is a container for these mini-apps).

Sense ui possible

Will it be possible to port the sense ui onto the zte blade
Thnx in advance
Sent from my ZTE-U V880 using XDA App
Very much doubt it imagine to be very similar to WM that non HTC devices won't have the dependencies needed to run, could be wrong but haven't seen sense for non HTC where android is concerned, you can mimic it very well with launcher pro pay version and fancy widget 'version before HTC clamp down'
Sent from my BladeVillain using XDA App
the problem of sense ui is that it requires htc custom framework but some non htc devices already had sense ported from some good developers like the motora milestone
My Wm non - htc phone has got sense UI on it. almost 100% working. i don't see why we couldn't get a decent port. the OSF IS cheap.. we should have large community. hopefully some nice dev will take on the port!
it can be done as it has been ported to non android devices such as the xperia x1

Yeah always been non 100 % working for WM non HTC devices, good to hear ports are available for android let's just hope a dev has time/interest to port framework needed to ZTE-Blade.

Ah, yea. I recently switched from an older HTC (tattoo) to Blade... Really wondered when I started to use my non-sense phone. Doesn't know how many feature was made by HTC...
Lot... and i really miss them.
I found some successful port to other phones (N1 for example), so I just hope, we will have a fellow cooker who will port it This phone is relatively new, so I should be patient...
It is not possible, sadly.
All the current HDPI (WVGA screen, so 800x480 resolution) HTC devices with Sense UI uses ARMv7 CPUs. But, the Blade only got an ARMv6. Because of this, you simply can't port it, it would need a lot of patching, rebuilding from source, and of course, library editing. Best start would be to take the binary files (/system/bin, /system/lib) from a Wildfire ROM, add the frameworks, apps, media, configs, etc, from a Desire (or Desire HD) ROM, and the add the Blade specific libraries.

interesting. but i thought tjat the htc legend shares the same qualcomm msm chip? I dont really see this as a hardware resticted software. The samsumg galaxy s (hummingbird cpu) could run it. But is that the sa arm7 arcjiteture?

Hey guys,
Use the XenoROM R4 available here on XDA. Select LauncherPro as the default launcher and simply add the sense like widgets. I used a clock which isn't available on the market anymore - I forget its name but its VERY much like the sense one - Fancy Widget its called - google it.
In effect its more or less just like I'm running the sense interface (not as good obviously!) - Its the concessions I learned to accept when moving to the ZTE Blade from a broken HTC Legend
hth.

You could try HeLauncher from Market; I think I remember it having a sense 2 launcher bar.
Never tried it though, so don't no how good it is as a general launcher
I downloaded HeLauncher. It's excellent! It's quick, free, and the sense theme looks great. The only problem we have now is trying to find the rest of the theme. We know Fancy Widget can get the clock. Anyone know how to get the black bar at the top?

There is real Sense port for Samsung Galaxy S and SE Xperia X8. But I'm pretty sure that they aren't fully functional.
Oh, and remember that HTC Sense isn't just a launcher. It's a whole new level of modification done by HTC, many apps are done different way and there are tons of little features added thruout the whole system. I prefer CM7, though ;p.

problem with blade is all WVGA phones having sense have ARM v7 CPU whereas blade has ARM v6 CPU

Looks just like the Sense 3.0 Lockscreen. You can get the Free or Paid version, but I recommend free because you can get the paid version for free if you download some Chinese apps within that app. All you need is 300 points and each app is about 100 points so 3 free apps= 1 paid app for free. Just uninstall whatever you don't want after you get 300 Points. Search for Agile Lock on Market or use the web version.

THESE ARE TO BE INSTALLED LIKE ANY OTHER APP, THROUGH ASTRO OR ROOT EXPLORER OR ANY OTHER APP INSTALING APLICATION!!!
IF NONE OF THIS MAKES SENSE TO YOU (NO PUNN) THEN YOU SHOULD PROBABLY READ UP ON ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS GOING ON IN THE WORLD OF "HAVING ROOT" BEFORE CUSTOMIZING YOUR PHONE!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!

DON'T KNOW IF THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MODIFIED HD FLIP CLOCKS BUT I FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY,
WHEN FLASHING ONE OF MY CLOCKS, OR ANY CUSTOM FLIP CLOCK FROM ANYBODY ELSE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR OLD CLOCK UP ON YOUR HOME SREEN. DO NOT REMOVE WIDGET FROM SCREEN, THEN FLASH THE NEW ONE!!! IT WONT APPEAR!!! TRYING TO ADD STOCK CLOCK WILL NOT WORK EITHER IF YOU COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM. YOU WILL HAVE TO RE-FLASH YOUR ROM TO GET IT BACK (THAT'S THE ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO GET IT BACK. MAYBE SOMEONE KNOWS A EASIER WAY.) THANK YOU AND ENJOY THESE KICK ASS CLOCKS!!!!

first of all, great job! great to see the flip clocks working perfectly on 2.2 roms (im running leedroid 2.3d). however, i do have one request. it's if you could possibly make a flip clock that looks exactly like the stock one. the "stock" one you have right now is good, but id love one that had the dark-ish background. thanks and keep up the good work!

Hello Stoney,
The clocks are great, however there is something wrong with the links. I wanted to install the white clock without base (#16 in post 1 - http://bit.ly/fOrdT8) but what I am getting is a red clock like #10.
Please advise.
Cheers,
DonBartal
ps.: running AuraxTsense 8.3, and I wiped the davlik after installing the zip from recovery.

Sorry about that! that's weird Cuz these links have never changed and I've never heard of this before. I'll check it out ASAP.
Edit.... OK, I haven't checked out the links yet but I noticed the link you posted here is for the no base 4x5 clock. You do need to have a 4×5 layout fir this clock. If you don't have the 4×5 Rosie layout, I will make the no base in the normal 4×4 layout for you. I still need to check the link messup though....

Working on it
Not too much of wallpapers huh?
Yesterday I tried LeWa OS RC2 [Port for hero GSM]
performance, dialler, network traffic monitor, user interface is unbelievably comfortable, variety of skins to choose from, at least for me this rom was a pearl, finally dropped the ideas of getting HTC sensation XE. That phone is still breathing fire after 2 years of hard use, hundreds of times flashing it and so fourth
Rom: LeWa OS RC2 [Port for hero GSM]
Launcher: N/A
Widget: ^3 (Cubed) music player, Animated Weather,
I do not really know the launcher name, maybe bharat_goku can tell that and haven't any widgets yet, just a simple weather widget (Animated Weather) which I do not like, because of the adds and stuff and Filippe Abrantes music player called "3", I find it on the market by typing abrantes, but I like that not because of the widget but because it has my beloved jump to and queue functions..
this is mine
HTC Hero (gsm)
ROM: Zero Hero Sense 3.5 (RC1 with some fixes)

Disclaimer
I, nor anybody, anywhere is responsible for what you do to your device!
Support for: Flexreaper R14 and CM9 Alpha1
So seeing a total lack of mods around this place I took it upon myself to kang together some things for myself, and am uploading them here for all to enjoy (or not, really doesn't matter to me)
I am not a themer, developer, or anything of the sort. I am a copy and paster. With that being my situation, there are several thanks that need to be given here.
Thanks to:
Vache for the kickass rom
UOT Kitchen. They provided the .xml edits for the accurate battery mod and the flashable zip I'm using
iammodo. He compiled this great collection of softkeys on xoom board
s60mike for the blue circles softkeys
mr_physco. For providing the battery images.
civato For the awesome Flexreaper rom and requested Acer ring icons.
waydownsouth, gh123man, and the whole CM team!
If I forgot anyone I assure you it is because I am an idiot, not because I don't value and appreciate your work.

Which one/ones did you try on what rom?
To test I just did a full wipe (wipe data/cache, format system, cache, data, flexrom) and reinstalled taboonay (3.0, then 3.01 update, then wifi fix, then acer ring, then my mods) and it worked great

Well, I might have to eat some words.
I tested 2 of them. I didn't see it on the first mod (#1), but (when things got dark in the room), I could barely see the white numbering on the battery icon on the "reflective". So "maybe" it was working after all. Kinda hard to see the white numbering on the light blue battery.

karlkarloff above says that the droid font worked with flexreaper. If one of them works they all should, they only difference between each mod is the 5 to 7 sofkey .pngs. Do a backup and if all else fails you can just restore the backup. Give me about 15 mins and I'll add the white HTC ones too.
Edit: Added White HTC to folder

looks about right to me, not sure what you mean by bull eye but if it's related to the acer ring it shouldn't change anything, everything related to the acer ring should be in acering.apk. The only thing my mod replaces is your framework-res.apk and your systemui.apk.
Yea if you look at the pic the greenish/yellowish dot with a circle around it the acer ring launcher used to look different like a grey line.

No, I didn't make any of these, credits are in the op. Search icon there because some tablets have search icon I guess???
Pretty easy to switch in any icons, if you want to link or send me some wouldn't take me a few minutes to resize, rename, and swap in the icons. If you wanted to do it yourself all you need is 7zip and Gimp (actually paint might even be able to handle this). Maybe I'll sit down Friday while I'm off and type up a detailed tutorial.

Documents
Email
Keyboard
Lock screen icons
In call - phone
Gmail
DSP manager
CM file manager "select dark theme"
Rom manager
Swype "has multiple themes to choose from"
Tapatalk
Torch
ADW launchers
Apex launcher
Solid explorer
CM11 theme chooser
Apollo
Desk clock
cLock
Lock widget
Theme chooser wallpapers app "it lets me add 20 wallpapers"
100+ icons
Bootanimation
Caviar dreams fonts
Sounds - Bentley Dubs - Mira - Buzzer alarm
More to come!!!

NOTE: Hangouts, Google music and a few other Google apps will not theme to my standards and will not be included until I feel it looks right. If you ask about it I will send you to this post...
Look in the TeamBlackOut updater for fully themed versions of them.
Google plus is old because the new one won't decode fully so we can't theme it and it looks half baked in BlakKat if I add it. So it won't be added unless I can get more code from it.<-----themed yay!
thank you!

I love the klearkat, I wish it didn't change my softkeys though ?. Great job OP!
DJ, you might remember I switched from KlearKat to BlakKat recently due to 4.4.3 dialer issue while you get KK going... BlakKat is actually growing on me, but was curious - is there any remedy for apps who's UI doesn't like the theme - eg Minimalist Text just basically blacks completely out on the menus... Some apps just grey out which is still usable (SSHDroid, FTPDroid are examples).
I realize these are not your issues to work on, but short of switching the theme back to default when I need to use these apps, Is there something specific we can ask the devs to add or include so theme(s) don't wash out their apps?

Hmm, well that app is very unusual, I didn't invert any white to black so I have no idea why that grey text is on black. The tabs I know about but are usable but that bg shouldn't change at all. What does it look like on stock?
With this kind of issue I would have to take apart the app to see why.

OK - not a critical issue or anything I just didn't know if there was something UI specific I could mention to app devs or something like that... Here is stock (Holo Theme) it's all pretty much white or grey I guess.. or black in the previews. It's not like I'm in the MimText app every day, more of curiosity than anything .
This is an SSH App, which has a grey wash over everything when themed - still usable, of course just wondered why it does it. The dev has several apps that are similar (SSH, FTP, Samba) and they all do it (with KlearKat also), so it has something to do with the way he coded the apps I suppose...
Didn't mean to infer you need to work on anything, mainly just curious about why/how really .

Looks like I'll be reverting the grey bg for white to fix that grey on grey but the black bg shouldn't change. I have not one spec of code inverting anything on system so this is a weird one.

@djdarkknight96 seems like pacman latest nightlies still don't have CM11 commits on theming Gmail, even though everything else seems synchronized. So Gmail looks totally skinned only on CM11 now, on pacman only first screen is skinned. New message and expanded message thread are white( any quick advice on what background values to look for to make a temporary fix for other roms? will upload it here if i can fix it)

There's nothing wrong with your Rom, gmail is the issue. Google hard coded gmail reply, new message and vacation responder. So I can't touch it with the chooser or even theme the actual apk. Give Google a big fu for that one.
Edit: The ONLY way to fix it is use my old gmail...Link in signature.
