Hello Everyone.
There is a battery drain issue in in cell standby and I think I just solved the issue. Let me go back to when I last experienced such an issue. It was when I flashed a ROM for my SGS1 Captivate called Cognition. There was a bug that left wifi not only on but it was active during sleep mode.

It was later solved by the Dev and the draining went away.
What is different here is that the SGS3 only has this bug when wifi is on. Look at my battery charts when I have wifi on and wifi off. The red area shows the slope with wifi and the blue area shows it without wifi. This is during standby times.
So is this due to the wifi dual banding just taking up more battery? Or is the phone not properly tuning the wifi down in standby? Solving this issue is out of my hands now and I will have to hand this over to someone else.
For now, change your wi-fi sleep policy to shut off when in sleep mode.

So I think i figured out why the wakelocks are happening. Other people have the problem with dynamic IP addresses.

I don't know why these other fanboy war threads are bumping and so popular but a serious problem doesn't even get a response or a second look. Does anyone else have any comments on how we can get this fix? We need Samsung to fix this problem too.

I agree with you here as well. However I've not noticed any battery drain. I've got about 35% left after good full day of use.

I'm experiencing some kind of battery drain too with sgs3, but mine it's not wifi related. I have as first voice in battery stats page Cellular Standby. I mean, it's almost impossible it drains more then the screen!
Anyway, giving a look at your screenshot, I can clearly see some areas you didn't red boxed when wifi was on, screen was off but battery drain was not terrible at all.
How do you explain them?!

Yeah, I mean my battery life is still good, but I know it can be better. Now that I made it turn wifi off when it's asleep the battery life, the slope you can see there in blue, is a lot better. It's not so slanted and draining as quickly.
A lot of other people that complained about bad battery life I noticed the same trend, it's their wi-fi also. If you notice the long blue line on the bottom, that's when wi-fi is active and those extreme slopes have to be caused by wifi. Cell standby shouldn't be draining the battery more than the screen I don't think.
It's either wi-fi, the radio or both.

I don't know, I guess that is when the wifi properly shuts itself off.
When I look at my screen while I'm not doing anything at all I can see the orange arrow on the wifi on, and it stays on even though I'm not using the internet or anything. What can that mean? Is the orange arrow "uploading" or "downloading?"
EDIT: It's downloading. And I set the wifi to shut off if the screen shuts off. The Wifi sometimes shuts off. But right now it refuses to turn off even in sleep! And the orange arrow is lit up!

It's there in advanced wifi settings.
Did any of you people tried flashing different modems to resolve this?

If you turn off the wifi then wont it just use the normal data connection and so use more battery? I was led to believe that using wifi was less demanding than say 3g.

Yes that is correct, but read my OP and the thread I posted. A wifi bug is the wifi not powering down in sleep mode. It stays on at full power during sleep and drains your phone.

I tried a couple of modems, but in vain. Cell Standby is always much too high. Wifi is beyond good and evil.
I would by now also lean towards a bug. Unfortunately I'm not a Android dev. My knowledge ends at developing apps.

Have any of you guys tried easy battery saver? One of the features is to disable radios when screen is off. I wonder if it is more successful in doing this than the built in setting.
I got the same cell standby problem so I went ahead and flashed Omega ROM, yesterday was my first day full with that ROM and the result was quite good. I ended up with about 45% battery after about 15-16 hours. Well I'm on wifi for like 3-4 hours though.
Drain caused by exchange sync process. Kill this process and see how battery life will change. Sorry for my english.
Curious, which F/W are you on? I was getting oddball WIFI battery drain using an older LE9 insecure kernel to root at first (WIFI would actually shut off and come back on after coming out of idle... even though I had it set to "always on.")
Completely went away after I flashed back the stock LEF kernel that my phone shipped with.
For reference below, no drain issues during idle with WIFI left "always on."

It's normal on default stock rom settings.
Change Wifi policy to "When screen turns off"

WiFi does suck battery pretty massively on SGS. I've only had my phone for a week, so I don't have any hard-and-fast rules, but I can say that turning off WiFi and mobile data overnight means that I only lose 2-3% battery at most

I can say NOT TURNING OFF WIFI and MOBILE DATA overnight and I loose only 2-10 % overnight. Depends on how long I sleep
Having on WIFI or Mobile Data VS closing it. I think I even posted my results in a thread where I tested it. Was in long run via "shutting off everything(sync/data/wifi)" and "having everything on" like 3-5 hours of standby or 15-20 min usage battery gain. (60 hours VS 62-5 Standby)
If your phone eats that much. Either is wrong configured (wifi wont sleep how the second post said/something is refreshing too often) OR there is a program/app thats always running and not allowing it to sleep.
Skype is the worst of worst in this (and fairly common). Others wont come to my mind now.

I never turn wifi of ever and i average two and half days between charges and i use phone a lot i use js7 and realy good

Its not normal on any rom wifi should not be issue as long as wifi is conected and not constantly searching as stated i never turn it of policy is set to always.and i get around sixty hours between charges wifi does not cause massive drain biggest drain is screen

my battery is dropping like mad recently, no matter which rom I use, JVK JPG JPK, all the roms that is known for good battery life, with various kind of modems.2G network taskilled everything before sleep, no gallery bug, no background data updates, not connected to wifi BT GPS, battery stat wiped, more than 3 times full cycle charge..I have done everything I could, the battery still drop like mad.I fully charge the device at 12am, took off the charger, the battery is 88% when its 8am..checked the batter use, cell standby 40+%, display 20+, phone idle 20+..no more and when I slide the menu, for nothing, just slide for fun, scroll the app drawer, see the apps flying, it drops another 1%..lol
I had no idea what is happening, maybe the battery is dead? but I checked the batter health it says good..should I buy a new battery or what

12% for 8 hrs is NOT that bad. I get around 1.6% drop per hr with Wi-Fi ON and push notifications.
Anyways, See if you have a Time without Signal entry under Cell standby. Keeping a phone in a low/no service area can drain the battery faster.
You should recalibrate the battery after each rom flash. I think there is an App somewhere in the forum which is really easy to use.

Did you check for Time without Signal ? Maybe cellular reception in your area has deteriorated.

Or maybe just general poor reception in your bedroom? When I'm in school (a nice plain concrete building to prevent young software developers from ever finding joy in life) I have 1-2 bars of edge reception and my phone loses with data off around 1.5%/h.
Either that or your battery has lost capacity and you can fix the issue by buying a new one. My bet is on the reception.
nah not possible..I placed the device on the same spot everyday..back in a month time it constantly dropped 1-2% but now 10+%..its not about the signal or reception or what I guess..it may be due to the frequent flashings recently..anyway I just ordered a new battery..see if it works =(

I second that. In my basement lab at university, ~1 bar EDGE reception, 1.5%/h is not untypical

Hold down your power button. Set data network mode to disabled.
I was getting 10-15% battery drain over 8 hrs of stand by with data network mode enabled.
Now with data network mode disabled (when I need it I just switch it on again) I get 1-2% drain for the same time period.

What is the point in buying a smartphone, if needs turning off everything?
I suppose your custom ROM is a wipe install
10% battery drain overnight seems to be fine. If you use background data and auto sync, keep on Wifi because that will do the job quickly.
Widgets are notorious battery drains, esp weather widgets. Remove all type of widgets from display. Change sync interval for facebook/twitter to 3, 6, 12 hrs etc... from 15min, 30 min.
Check sync interval for apps like Pulse, buzzbox, weather apps
Just a thought.. how about letting your phone completely discharge. When restarted, immediately flash to stock rom, allow that to completely discharge, repeat process several times (3 ideally) then load your custom rom of choice.
If it sounds absurd, I agree. It really does! However just remember, electromagnetic charge carries resonance memory, much like xrays. This old school trick is not often related to modern batteries, but have found it to increase battery life with several Android devices.
The main things are screen brightness and running apps. Your problem sound's quite normal even. Considered a secondary battery?
I think it is fine because if I use wifi (i.e. browsing XDA forum), it use ~8% for HALF an hour.
Anyway why don't just shut it down when you are asleep?

your battery dropped because you on wifi, at least, the thing is, I din even connect to BT wifi GPS, no task running in the background(taskilled before sleep) and it still drops 10+%..jus imagine if I had my wifi on overnight
This app has made my battery last 4-5 days instead of 2. It is called Auto Airplane Mode by DON. It does just that, automatically enables airplane mode when the screen turns off. Most battery drain occurs while in "standby." This app shuts all connections off and saves a big chunk of battery.
I am sure it will work for your phone too, but since you receive calls on a phone it would kinda defeat the purpose.

The screen accounts for most battery usage but some still occurs when the screen is off due to apps trying to sync.

In theory this is a helpful app for those who aren't looking to sync devices during these intervals of having the screen off.
But I think in the case of the WiFi only Xoom this isnt necessary because WiFi turns off during screen off anyway right?
And on 3G it may prove to be more helpful because of sync. But the number one killer of battery on a tablet should be the display.

I dunno I don't experience that much battery drain, I been getting around 4 days with causal use (wifi model)
...and why would you want to be in air plane mode when the screen turns off on your phone?? You wont be able to receive phone calls or messages. mind as well turn off the phone at that point lol
But at least we have no Amoled-display. Amoled is the most consuming type of display.

No, you have a choice and HC3.2 has a bug that can cause random reboots unless wifi sleep policy is set to never. Don't know how this would affect that issue.
In moray rom it is one touch on/off(notification area)
so,while watching movies or listening songs one can turn off the wi-fi.

I worded that wrong. Obviously, your battery will drain more WHEN YOU ARE USING IT and the screen is on.
For many people, myself included, the "standby" battery loss/drain is excessive. This app helps A TON with that.
Mike the majority of understand you what you mean.
Some tablets spend most of their time and energy "waiting" to be used.

I can't complain too much about my battery life. My Wifi is always on 24/7 even when the screen is off or I am not using it. I like to be notified at all times, ya know. My CPU speed is way underclocked with the screen off so I get a killer standby time regardless. I don't even notice any kind of battery drain at all really with my Wifi always on, but a good tip nonetheless.
Underclocking is an amazing way to save battery life when you are not using it, or even when you are using it. For root users only, of course. If one were to be rooted that is what I would reccommend the most for someone looking to save battery life. Underclocking+undervolting makes for a power saving beast. Even more so than just disabling all connections.
But, combine auto airplane mode/Wifi screen off and underclocking+undervolting, and you have the ultimate power saver. If you don't need to get emails or notifications of any type this would be perfect for you considering the fact that all connections would be disabled.

i don't particularly have problems with the battery life of my s4, but sometimes i get weird drains, like 25% overnight. The weird thing is i deactivate every toggle except for flight mode and battery saving mode. I thought it's rather peculiar that my battery drains in what in my opinion should be like the most battery friendly mode i could think of.. anyone any suggestions on how to solve this? On the first picture i dont really complain about the first 2 drops because that could be caused by gaming, but maybe it's in there too, the last one however is with all toggles off from a certain point (you can see my wifi and screen turn off), but there isn't really a change in steepness of dropping... the second picture is my toggle setup. Any help would be appreciated

well as always... first check your wakelocks with better battery stats (free on xda forums).
i had a drain over night too. even on my s2.
it was my routers fault... bought a new one and drain is fixed.
but maybe it's just an app for you which gets your phone out of stand by. so check out better battery stats
Same here. Already used better battery stats. Nothing suspicious which could've drained the battery that much

TRy installing greenify it will tell u which apps are breaking sleep state and u can hibernate it i easily reach 6 plus hrs on my device
And try to delete unused samsung bloatware

I picked up a T2 on Thursday morning coming from a Maxx, and after the first day I felt I wasn't getting quite the battery life I should. After watching the battery stats and doing some research, the issue seems to be due to Lollipop's well-documented cell standby bug. Coming from KitKat I have been pretty frustrated by this, as my T2 will sometimes drain 5% or more in an hour of idling if WiFi (or possibly Bluetooth) is on, and seems to drain much faster with use if WiFi is on. (Note that all of this is taking place in areas with very strong 4g and WiFi signal).
When WiFi is turned on, Cell Standby tops the battery consumption chart by a large margin and my unscientific eyeball test suggests that the battery drains much faster.
Is anyone else having this issue? I'm considering taking the T2 back, but honestly there aren't any other new phones with comparable battery life, and it would be hard to give up the shatterproof display. Other than this I'm loving the phone and Lollipop.

I'm not having that issue at all and I leave my WiFi on pretty much all the time. I just checked mine and in 13 hrs my cell standby was 8%. Honestly idk if that's good or bad.
I guess I'll just keep an eye on it. Over this past night Cell Standby was on for 10 hours and had the Mobile Radio on for 8 hours while the phone was idle. Not sure if this is intended or not. My battery woes could just be in my head.
cell standby has been near or at the top of all 3 of my Verizon Lollipop phones so dont believe its a Turbo 2 direct issue.
I guess I'll just be patiently awaiting marshmallow then!
Try this, idk if it'll help or not but under WiFi settings under keep WiFi on during sleep, choose only when charging.

Turn off allow Google to scan for networks even if off, keep WiFi on during sleep charge only, LTE instead of global, and then go into recovery and clear cache. This is what I did and my cell drain is very low. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tips - I changed all the settings but I'm having trouble getting into recover. When I try to launch from the bootloader I just get the dead Android with "No Command" displayed below it. Is there something I'm missing? FWIW I have dev mode on and unlock oem bootloader on.
I wouldn't turn on unlock boot loader this disables some security features and unless we have a way to truly unlock it. It's better to leave on. Dev mode doesn't affect drain issue at all. Here's link for booting into recovery.

Got it. Thanks for the help!
Mine drains fast while sleeping at home. In my case, the signal is poor so the phone has to crank up the radio power, draining the battery.
UPDATE: For anyone interested, the fixes suggested in this thread seem to have done the trick for me. After changing settings and wiping cache I am getting even better battery life (7-8 hours of screen on time up from 5-6 in similar conditions). This could, of course, be due to other factors - but hey, it's worth a shot if your battery is draining quickly!

Which lte did you pick? There is 2 options. Also how do you get into recovery? Thanks

I personally have noticed that turning off mobile data when connected to WiFi helps. I have done this with previous phones
I experienced this the other day after spending the weekend in an area with spotty service. To fix all I did was reboot the phone.

After changing settings and wiping cache I am getting even better battery life (7-8 hours of screen on time up from 5-6 in similar conditions). This could, of course, be due to other factors - but hey, it's worth a shot if your battery is draining quickly!

Hey sorry but could you give a bit of a walkthrough for all the processes you took? Bit of a newbie here and my moto x force doesn't seem to be doing very well with the drain
Giving this a shot now...hopefully this works for me as well
Changing those settings helped immediately
