Thanks for the heads up. I'm the kind of person who will ask questions just to make sure before I take on such a task since I don't have money to just go and buy another one on a whim if I mess it up so hopefully I'll never run into the wrong download issue. Coming from the A2, we used RSDLite to flash firmwares to our phones, very similar to ODIN although nowhere near as advanced and polished.

np... most roms / kernels /...anything flashable will include an md5 check... use that as well...
Another heads up is sometimes op will say remove all ticks from odin... this refers to re-partition auto reboot and reset time...do that but ask first because I've flashed things such as stock factory images that generally need re-partition checked and op will either not mention it or say remove all ticks...

Oh wow...a bit more involved with these roms and stuff but glad you brought this to my attention. Can't wait to get the first one under my belt so I can get the hang of it.

Is the GS3 unbrickable or not? I read with the GS2 flashing anything with an ICS recovery could brick your phone, because the firmware had a command to destroy certain sectors. Or something like that.
I'm asking because I've also read Samsung phones are pretty much unbrickable, unlike e.g. HTC phones which could get bricked for instance if you pulled the battery while flashing a radio.

It's always a gamble.... vibrant was unbrickable...then Ics came along and coasted for a while now people are getting bricks due to it destroying the interal sd... my theory is always wait for wrinkles to get worked out...haven't checked in a while but I'm sure it's fixed or being worked on...Either way for the first few months stick with source based roms...
Anything with the word "ported" in it could be risky...eg...miui,cm9 and others.... but yes you will have much better odds with Samsung over other phones as they are much easier to recover.

Haven't kept up with GS2....
That is really interesting tho...where did you read that? I wonder if Sammy is throwing **** out there to mess up phones?
It always pisses me off when even to this day I read articles about ICS updates and manufacturers stating in official press pieces, the fact that phones like GS1 and equivalents "hardware cannot support" ics...biggest bunch of BS ever...when in fact the ICS ports that have been available for months now, and worked, until the recent problems, have made these phones scream and actually usable with very little lag/annoyances ...they are beyond capable of handling it. It's a marketing ploy and everyone knows it.
They've been called out on it plenty, it just get's swept under the rug for some reason.

about the DK05 leak wasn't about monopoly

he is lying about the whole thing. i did not give it to people i liked...
i only gave it to people that developed for the epic and people that they trust weather i liked it or not.
I gave firon the leak of dj29 then whodaman & firon decided to leak it without my approval a week later... they have the power to leak froyo without me approving that .. it take time to test froyo.. i assure you that guy that leaked it is not a developer or a tester..
thanks the mods for closing the thread of the dk05 leak because flashing the leak is NOT SAFE!

I agree it wasnt posted by many people who had it for a REASON as to prevent problems and people getting BRICKED or not flashing properly.
Sit back and think about how long the leak has been out do you all really think that if it was WORTHY of being let out to the masses it would have taken so long? No it would have been posted as a rom for mass consumption REALLY Fast....

They absolutely are.
I tested DJ29 for about a week and found it was good enough for a release. DK05 bricked my modem, so I didn't consider it safe.
The ROM was -probably- okay to release, but the modem is not.
It was not held back for fame or any bull**** like that.
There are too many trolls on these forums who obviously don't understand the time and patience it takes to make things like this possible.
I appreciate all the hard work you've done noob, and firon.

You are dead right on this one. The Epic side of the house is unbelievably bad. Not only are things slow, at no fault to anyone here, but there is WAY too much bickering in these threads. I go to the threads concerning my EVO and love it. I come here and am continually caught off guard by the way folks are. Either way, I want my Epic to stay my main phone, so I keep coming back.
Any one know what the "phone, orange triangle and little computer" mean. I fear I bricked my phone. I can't even get into download mode now. WHen I press 1 and power up the charging battery comes on the screen. Thanks for trying to keep this from happening. This the first time I have bricked a phone in many years. Guess ut was bound to happen at some point.
Why not just release the rom + modem with a disclaimer that it may brick your phone and require an Odin flash? Also, the safety net Odin represents in itself, I think, nullifies any danger from bricking.
And another thing; don't send things to people over the internet and expect them to stay secret.

Lol, that's my problem. I love my Epic, so I just skim through the bickering & hang around. No offense but a lot of it does seem about egos & fame, but I understand what goes into being a dev & it is nice to have recognition for your work. But at the same time it's not safe to release stuff not ready for the primetime because everyday average users looking for a better phone experience will just end up bricking their phones. & like I said, everything noob has put out has been quality work & I've never had a problem with any of it. just my two cents.

Hm. What you're describing sounds like you have the phone plugged in while you're trying to enter Download mode, which isn't very effective. Try plugging it out first.
Anyway we can have you guys upload DK17 at least for us to flash or odin? I can wait for the final modem...jjst want an up to date rom.

Very well put. I am ok waiting. I don't think it's some big conspiracy. I feel better knowing that the newer radios seem to fix the gps. Now we just need to make it safer to use. Until then I'll just pull up a chair, crack open a beer and roast some marshmallows courtesy of all the flames. Anyone care to join? lol
I'm not getting dragged into another fight on here, the **** with Hero was bad enough, but I will say a few things on this issue.
1. Odin gives a safety net, and it works well.
2. The modem is safe, so long as you're competent enough to flash it right. Thats not a shot at anyone who got a brick from it, but it works fine for me and many people who flashed it successfully.
3. This ROM is essentially **** anyway. I had one of the early leaks of it, and I went back to DJ29. The music player has issues, there are UI bugs in the launcher, the camera & flashlight APIs are broken for everything but the stock camera app, and there's still the lag issue on unlock. This is all straight off a wipe as well, so it isn't that.
4. Sometimes it isn't good to give everything to the public. I don't agree with keeping it in a secret little circle for devs, but sometimes things NEED to be tested and cleaned up before they can be given to the public.
5. As for the whole thing that it was a lie that there are tags from the source in the ROM, I'm not aware of everything, but I have found a few myself. All pointing to one Korean name, who built the ROM originally, and it's the same name as on the DJ29 leaks. I'm sure you're smart enough to find it. Does that mean he leaked it? No, but it is still a liability for him and his career because it was built on his machine & probably by him as well. Some people on here are just selfish and don't realize that their craving for the latest and greatest could cost someone their job.
There. I'm done.
This is exactly why the Epic community is not progessing as fast as the Evo community, the leaks don't get put into the right hands. And progress haults, I understand your concern about bricks but maybe you should post a thread with a request for people to Close beta test and perhaps create an application that can be filled out and submitted via PM to the person in control of the leak, this could help the rom fall into the correct hands that can test and verify a rom.
Thank you.

your phone is stuffed, first of all you flashed the wrong PIT and firmware for the wrong phone the one you flashed is for Galaxy S not S2, you can try the usb jib but 99% sure it wont work, youll have to send it back to samsung or get it repaired at a repair center

You flashed the wrong software and the wrong partition table to it... You should've read up on the links you gave in your first post before flashing. Second if you'd read up on the flashing instructions on this site you would've known not to use a pit file unless absolutely necesary. And finaly when you encounter a file named s1_odin_20100512.pit which clearly has S1 (meaning Galaxy S1) and the date 12-05-2010 (which is before the S2 was even announced) that should've made you a little suspecious as to whether you had the right files.
You can send the phone to Smasung and hope they don't find out what happened. If they don't they'll repair it for free, if they do you're screwd and you'll have to pay for the repair.
ok mate,
u have 1 of 2 options:
1- u need to send it back for the service centre
2- send it for a JTAG service close to ur place

I'm pretty sure our devices are idiot proof unless you go about doing absolutely absurd things like flashing the wrong files and repartitioning your device with a table of an other device. If the people would just read the risk is minimal. Like this OP who did his research AFTER bricking, if only he did it before hand. And what gets me the most, in 2 of the 3 threads he links to the answer is present. Wrong pit file need JTAG programming. But yet again instead of reading through the threads he opts to start yet another thread...

No, after Gingerbread update you have to use a computer with ODIN to root, and once rooted, it's much more painful to flash the idiotic partition system of Galaxy S, requiring you to reflash bootloaders and kernels from PC before flashing the actual ROMs or even for backup restorations, being unable to flash kernel from recovery - because kernel contains the recovery. Actually, if there is a phone that requires PC almost for any type of flashing - that would be Galaxy S.
IMHO, as stated many times - if you can't follow a simple guide to downgrade and root your MT4G, you shouldn't be rooting anyway.

@jack_r1 makes a very valid point. rooting this phone when it had 2.2.x was STUPID easy. Easy and quick enough that i had it rooted before i left the T-Mobile Store, when i bought the phone.
The new method is simple. you downgrade then you use one of two VERY simple methods to root your phone.
If you cannot follow directions and need to rely on a one click root. Either based from the phone or on the PC then you shouldn't be messing with SU access.

That's what a clueless person would say, I guess. If you had ever tried to flash anything on Galaxy S type phone, you'd know. Pretty much all the ROM flashing instructions contain ODIN versions and instructions that require flashing at least bootloaders and mostly kernels too (see "Flash a stock Gingerbread ROM" step as an example), for a reason. Moreover, you can try flashing Gingerbread MIUI and then reverting back without ODIN. Good luck.
And whoever messed with rooting and flashing one phone, if he didn't just have to click "root" button on 1-click-rooter of some kind, but at least to work out ADB, wouldn't be afraid of rooting MT4G. I guess your mouth is going far ahead of your knowledge. It's good that rooting became complicated on all phones, because it keeps dummies from messing with things they don't understand.
This is what happens when one is having a friendly conversation with another and a third party joins in with a ” im better than you complex” and runs his/her trap and makes insults for no apperent reason all in his/her very first post .....if you cant be nice and put in helpful info without insult stay out kiddo......or buckle up and enjoy the ride....I dont care either way I deal with dumbasses on a daily basis and your not gonna find my nerve

Yes you can root and flash a galaxy s without ever touching a comp.
Yes in some cases odin is required, inwhich involves using a comp.....omg Im so sorry ..... Although that was further along than the conversation I was having with invasion....lol you just wanted to come here and play the ”all knowing” part and the ”im also a cyber tough guy” part wich are both laughable and pathetic at the same time.

Or should I rephrase:
You posted without searching, one of, if not the most posted question on the forum. Then, when you got the response that indicated you as a not-so-brave person, you tried to start bragging to lift your self-esteem, taking this thread off track. Then, when you understood you've got caught bragging, you've read the regular line that shows on these forums 3 times a week - "if you can't follow the guide, you shouldn't be rooting anyway" as a personal insult - and got all cocky and started name calling. When you got paid with the same money, you still keep being cocky.
The funny thing is that I didn't write to catch you on your bragging, I couldn't care less. I just can't stand wrong info, which you happened to be spilling, so I corrected. i COMPLETELY disagree with anything you said. Samsung makes the worst products out there. i mean seriously? WHY DO I NEED TO FLASH MY GALAXY S VIA ODIN OR WHATEVER GARBAGE TO GET A NEW ROM??? that's plain crap! pointless. you must not have very good experience with HTC devices.
let me show you how HTC does it:
Rooting
very easy and simple on most devices, main thing is to obtain S-off.
Flashing
even easier.
this procedure goes for every HTC device out there:
reboot to recovery
make a nandroid backup
wipe
flash
DONE.
what about Samsung?
oooh first you gotta flash the "bootloader" or whatever crap, then the "modem", then this, then that via ODIN, and then you gotta do this this and this, THEN you finally reboot into recovery and flash.
i will let you decide which you think is easier, but don't go about saying that i have "no idea what i'm talking about" because i do. my dad has a Galaxy S, and flashing to that device is complete crap. i don't know WHERE you got that info that "flashing to a Galaxy doesn't require a computer". BECAUSE IT DOES.
stupid ODIN...
anyway, back on point. if you think you're so great and pro, maybe YOU can make an easier way to root 2.3.4 Stock MYTOUCH. cause i think a lot of us would appreciate it. maybe then, you'll be worthy enough to be here. because all you've done so far, is fill up xda with your retarded garbage.

make a nandroid backup
wipe
flash
DONE.
what about Samsung?
oooh first you gotta flash the "bootloader" or whatever crap, then the "modem", then this, then that via ODIN, and then you gotta do this this and this, THEN you finally reboot into recovery and flash.
i will let you decide which you think is easier, but don't go about saying that i have "no idea what i'm talking about" because i do. my dad has a Galaxy S, and flashing to that device is complete crap. i don't know WHERE you got that info that "flashing to a Galaxy doesn't require a computer". BECAUSE IT DOES.
stupid ODIN...
anyway, back on point. if you think you're so great and pro, maybe YOU can make an easier way to root 2.3.4 Stock MYTOUCH. cause i think a lot of us would appreciate it. maybe then, you'll be worthy enough to be here. because all you've done so far, is fill up xda with your retarded garbage.
have a nice day.

Lol this is funny ****

Its been a good run.

Well, after some misinformed past rumors, I am finally leaving the Evo. I make this thread not because I feel like I'm 'important' or that anyone will care, but because of the community. Despite the past ICS fallout between users and developers, the Evo community has been one of the best on XDA, and can say that it was nice being apart of it. Made some good friends, and a few enemies, but comes with the territory. I'll still pop in from time to time, but I know I will see some of you in my new home, the Galaxy S III [will be here tomorrow]. Do keep the Evo name standing, as its a great device.
See ya around You know where to find me if you need anything...hahahaha

Oh yea. I'm on the grid...just a different sector.
Well, I'm stuck with an Evo for 6 more months, so I doubt I'll be on the GSIII next, but good times here, mate and thx for everything!

And the same to you man, you got me on my feet so I could actually 'talk' about MIUI, instead taking a back seat educated speculation.
gtfo noob juust messing i'll be over shortly
Awwww, this makes me sad. I haven't been around much anyway, but I'll still miss you
If I ever happen to be on GTalk, hit me up. I doubt I'll be moving to the S III, but I am eligible for an upgrade so don't know... haven't really done my research yet. Send me a message and let me know how you like it once you've got it broken in.
Even if we don't have the same device, I'm sure I'll see you around. You've taught me a lot, even when you didn't realize it, and no one else has been as nice to me as you have, so thank you.

No need to be sad, and you can always hit me up on gtalk when you're on. You've got a ton of gold stars now, I've lost count. And I've seen you helping others, when you may not have thought me around. And you're very welcome, I'm glad to hear that...made me smile.
I'm still going to be around here, as I have a horded amount of knowledge...this was my first smart phone, and I think I made a great choice. I'll definitely let you know about the review, and can send you spec info.

If you're keeping your Evo you can be like me and be a forum whore lol. I'm on 7 sub forums right now, but only following on a few of them and active on 3. Mostly lurk on the others just for info. You can add me on gtalk of ya want my donation email in my profile is my gtalk name, if u got any questions about Samsung feel free to hit me up. Flashing and such is a little different than HTC and will take some time and questions to get the hang of. Got recovery, Odin and mobile Odin for your flashing needs, no more ruu's and no more unlocking bootloaders with an exploit. Odin takes care of those areas.

Oh yea, can do. And actually won't keep the evo [in my possession]; sending it home to my dad. He's on an optimus S and hates it, so big upgrade for him, and will do more than it needs for him. I'm actually pretty good with Odin, rooted a Galaxy S for this girl not too long ago. Odin is different, but its not bad once you get used to it, and mobile odin and triangle away do seem like a good investment.
add me on gtalk anytime, bro

Best investment you can make on a galaxy device man, should be the first apps you purchase once you decide you're keeping the device. Yea Odin is a bit tricky at first, the things you'll probably have more questions with are the dreaded brick bug(idk if the sgs3 is plagued with that nuisance or not, I hope not) and how to avoid it, since its a permabrick if it hits you. The whole method of doing stuff on Samsung is just alien when coming from HTC. Took me a few weeks b4 I was back to flashing like a junkie again with out reading and rereading every step over and over prior to trying something new. I've had a few months with the sgs2 now so if you have questions about samsungs whole crazy zimage/recovery and how recovery is baked into the kernel and changes every time you change kernels I'm more than happy to answer em the best I can or point you in the direction of your answers atleast.

Much appreciated man, and actually been doing some reason: the kernel and boot image on the G S III were separated so its actually a lot safer to root. In addition I've looked up the G S III root [international version] and actually QUITE painless, even using Odin. Since there were minimal hardware specs, aside from processor of course, but I believe the root will be the same or extremely similar. I originally was going to buy the original galaxy S, but I refused to get the epic with a hard keyboard, so I went with the Evo; though not like it was a bad choice.

That's cool they seperated the kernel from the recovery now, on the ET4G there's no normal boot.img its called a zImage and has the kernel and recovery in the same partition so flashing a kernel changes your recovery. It can get quite confusing going from rom to rom and build to build and having to remember which recovery which backup was made with so you can Odin it to restore we still don't have official ICS or kernel source yet so flashing ICS roms requires first flashing a GB kernel with pure CWM to avoid a blue light of death brick. Talk about confusing, it took me a week of reading before I had the balls to try ICS but now I can mOdin el26+cwm kernel and flash ICS in my sleep. I've been running aokp since march never went back to gb except the few times I bootlooped and had to Odin to el29(latest GB ota) and start fresh. Once you get a feel for it and get any questions you have lingering out of the way its painless but the first few times you're sweating missles waiting to it to flash and boot and praying you didn't just brick, LOL. My first venture to ICS I chewed off all my nails while flashing it, I was so nervous I forgot something and was gonna fry my eMMC chip and be bricked.
ETA: what's even worse for me is I have 4 different manufacturers devices all different methods of flashing and its hard keeping it all straight, going from HTC, to Amazon to Motorola to Samsung and trying to remember which one you flash how is an exercise in frustration :banghead:

Its just a pain in the ass for recovery, only because every time you change kernels if the new one has a different recovery your recovery then changes. On the et4g we have cwm, rogue and acs custom recoveries, and not all backups are compatible across all recoveries so you gotta try and keep track of what goes with what since we have to use the el26 kernel with pure cwm recovery to safely flash ICS without bricking I use it for everything recovery, but that requires me to Odin the el26 kernel everytime I need to do something in recovery and since I run ICS I then have to flash an ICS kernel to reboot my phone. Its more of a hassle/annoyance than anything just cuz of all the extra steps required to flash/backup etc

Do not forget us! Do not forget us! Good Luck in that new Galaxy.

[Q] If something should go wrong?

Hey there XDA Samsung Galaxy S4 Community, I come to you today to ask, If something should go wrong(mainly a user error) while flashing a new rom/kernel and my phone starts bootlooping like a fruit bowl, is there a fail safe for this phone? Like for the Samsung Infuse 4g no matter what you messed up on the phone all you had to do was put it into download mode and flash stock rom via Oden. It was pretty much unbrickable unless you totally noobed something xD So I was just wondering if this beautiful sex god of a phone had the same fail safe. Get back at me

Same with the GS4, if you get to download mode, flash back to stock with odin, no issues here.

Whatever rom you choose, just make sure you read, you will be ok, in fact, the hard brick is hard to do on this phone, but it could happen. Good luck
Some of us can testify that soft bricking your device when you start out definitely makes you start reading a lot more. LOL Unless you try flash a rom from a totally different device, you should be able to reboot into recovery and just wipe and restore. If I don't bootloop more than once a week I'm not flashing enough.

Haha i know exactly how that is xDD I used to be an insane flashaholic on my Infuse 4G mainly because the community for that phone was amazingly large at the time.

Isn't having a bootloop not a part of the process, if your not bootlooping, your not FLASHING enuf! yeah baby.

That's a reckless attitude to have toward your $700 device. And that's fine; I'm not here to tell you how to treat your phone. However, I really don't think you should post cavalier comments like that that might teach new users to do the same.
I've owned an HTC Inspire, a Galaxy S2, and a Galaxy S4. I've flashed many roms/kernels/recoveries/modems on all of them, and not once have I ever caused a boot loop. You just have to read, and never do anything before you know exactly what it is you're doing.

Same here. Never once bootlooped. There's a difference between constantly flashing and correctly flashing.

There's also a difference between flashing things that are untested / should work and things that have been fleshed out so to speak.
I flash a lot of untested stuff (mostly built by others, some by me) and have boot looped my phone at least 10 times since 5 May when u bought it.
Bootloops are not damaging as the software is juat not loading (hence the loop). As long as you dont mess with bootloaders you should b3 fine (and loki is not touching the bootloader just feeding it false info)

All it is, is a statement saying that you are going to get bootloops, guess you guys are perfect. but they happen, easily recoverable, so I think my statements holds true.

Completely agree and knew that would be the response. But based on their posts it sounded more like ROM hopping than testing.
