Is anyone thinking of doing ROM work on the MK802 Thumbstick PC? - Android Stick & Console RockChip based Computers

I pre-ordered the 1GB version of the MK802 ICS thumbstick today from Amazon for $70, can't wait for it to arrive to start playing around with it.
As with any other device, a custom ROM may well bring out some even greater possibilities for this great little piece of kit.
Any of our ROM devs got their eye on this one?

I'd like to second this, Ive ordered the 1gb version as well, can't wait til it arrives and to start monkeying around with it.

I´ve also ordered one (already shipped ) and can´t wait to start messing it up
Having a working CWM Version would be a good start, so we can make backups ^^

Mine got here today! Playing with it hooked up to monitor at the moment. I can't wait to take it home and plug it in to TV.

I Think about order this too and I love to see custom rom on this, sound fun!!

I got mine yesterday, but I can't get it to recognize my xbox 360 controller through a wireless dongle, which works fine in Linux otherwise. Anyway, although I'm disappointed with it so far due to sluggishness, i can only hope it's a software issue and they update it soon. Someone has already got Ubuntu running on it.

what version did you get, the 512 or the 1gig?
I've got a pre order 1g version on order from amazon as well, so watching this thread too

Mine is running Ubuntu now so I think the whole rom thing is now settled and obsolete. More info here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/installing-linux-on-mk802-948695/
In short, dd image, do a depmod, update apt and install your favorite programs.
Mine is now running dropbear ssh and lighttpd www with a mediawiki install. Best thing is I had that running under android and it was slower then now under Ubuntu.

Sorry for slow response. I unfortunately got the 512MB version. I assume the 1GB version will be significantly better when running Ubuntu.

That pretty much depends on your memory consumption, I have a 512 and it is running smooth and noticable faster then Android. Just go for lightweight like dropbear instead of openssh or LDX instead of Gnome etc. Here is a nice link to create a fresh rootfs where you can built upon. http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/04...image-for-mele-a1000-allwinner-a10-based-stb/

I use my wireless logitech mouse and microsoft keyboard with a USB hub, works great!
There are 2 USB ports but one of them is a mini-usb , used for charging (unless you plug it in the wall outlet). It comes with a usb-mini to USB host too.

These things are going to be big. There is a kickstarter project running for a similar device with integrated HDMI plug, though only a 1ghz processor, rather than 1.5ghz. No 1gb ram option either.. Take a look on their site and search 'android', Pocket TV will come up.
I've gone for the MK802 1gb model on preorder. The interesting thing from the Kickstarter project (apart from that cool air mouse) is the use of the Google TV remote app to control it using another android device. I've grabbed the Google TV remote APK, however when testing it, I couldn't connect to another android device. I can only assume they have found a way to 'spoof' the mini ICS PC stick as a Google TV. How? Read something about the Anymote protocol?
I like the idea of my Nexus S working the pointer and pull up keyboard...
REQUEST: Lets get an MK802 or Mini PC section up on XDA!!

I got mine 1gb
This little thing is cool as hell, Runs everything. Lets talk more about custom ROMs and Ubuntu. What version of Ubuntu are you guys running? Also, any good ideas for apps if one would like to stay with Android?

I saw this device today and i am excited from the specification and the price its coming with.
Does anyone, who has already has it, can tell me his experience??
Can you browse in a decent way?2-3 tabs open maybe? If the page has flash the scrolling is smooth?
I want to buy it for a gift to my parents

mk802
I just got mine direct from China. Working great with fly mouse/keyboard except when you go into recovery. I could only scroll up and fown the 5 selections but could not find any key to select. I was going to install 4ext but backed off as it couldn't detect device. There is certainly a need for a new forum and a developer. These may be the forefront of pc's to come.

New recover img for MK802

So does anyone know how to use this file? It took 20 attempt to download and was really slow, but no instructions.

in a few days I get a mk802
we must compile and run the kernel module uinput.ko
this is necessary to start DroidMote Server inside it.
with DroidMote this device would be the maximum.
i have a working compiled uinput.ko for a10 allwinner 3.0.8 kernel, in the meantime if anyone wants to try to load with the command insmod, get the module at this post:

well i have no experience finding out how to root a device, but i am more than happy messing around in a command line and cooking my own roms. but tbh i wouldn't be surprised if this came with a 100% unlocked boot loader and possibly 100% rooted. so hopefully it should just be a simple job of cooking up some roms, well lets just hope

wait one sec are you buying the ipad fake or the white one because i would have thought both would hopefully have the same bootloader hoepfully unlocked. but the ipad fake has a 1.2ghz if i have read correctly
I received my unbranded m001 yesterday. unfortunately it isn't unlocked. But I'm working on figuring out the boot loader mechanism. ADB doesn't seem to find it when I connect it to my computer via the supplied USB cable but I'm still hopeful. I'll post what I can figure out.

is yours the ipad fake or the white one? and does it have market on it?
Had I know of the Ipad fake I would have opted for it ,.but no, its the white one. It does have a market app but not the Android market. So the market enabler or a custom firmware will be needed to make this device really shine. Of course they might release a firmware update when it hits a more mass market status but I wouldn't count on it.
More info about the device.
I was wrong about it not having root access. Seems the file system is wide open. I went ahead and made a su command in /system/bin for good measure but I am still having trouble running programs that require root level access to the system. USB debugging is on but I'm not sure its running.

thanks dude i might contacts one of the guys that sells them on ebay and be a checky bugger and ask for a promo one that i can review and then link everyone to his account to buy them, could just work
I've sent an e-mail to Eken regarding future software updates...and they completely ignored it and sent me a request to fill out a sale form (how many units I want, address, etc) and they will provide me with "rock bottom price with high quality"
I'm on the edge of getting the M001 just to play around with because it's so cheap, but the Archos 7 Home Tablet has a few features that are just so tempting and the price isn't too much higher (199$).
To those of you who have this already: Does this device support multitouch? The descriptions say it's got a capacitive touch screen, but Chinese knockoff product descriptions are always very sketchy.

i think i read somewhere that one of them had multi touch but then one contradicted that and said it had a resistive touch screen, but tbh multi touch isn't always that much better just as long as its a pretty good quality resistive it isn't that much more work than using a capacitive
Well, if the M001 has a capacitive multitouch-capable screen it would appeal to me more than the higher quality, more storage space Archos 7HT. The A7HT has a resistive screen, 8GB of NAND, 7-8 hours of battery life. M001 has 2 hours battery, 2GB storage, and an unknown touch screen
well i emailed one of the dudes from ebay hopefully he might see sense and give me one for free but i doubt it

Ubuntu Phone for the HTC HD2

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to install the new Ubuntu Phone on the HTC HD2?
Gesendet von meinem Transformer TF101 mit Tapatalk 2
I think it's very possible, it is open source. I saw in one video that they're hoping or are willing to help developers port it to other phones.
My hd2 is ready for this.
I am a lil excited about this, particularly if we will have the option to boot into desktop by docking. Considering that the Galaxy Nexus is being used as the demo phone, I'm imagining that our lil HD2 will be capable (not saying they have identical specs, but clearly ubunto are going to demo it well above the min requirements)

They mentioned somewhere they wanted to have Ubuntu running not only across devices but on budget grade hardware within a device type as well. The HD2 still performs well relative to budget phones so I dont anticipate there will be any problems with the reqs. Can't wait till someone manages to get their hands on and port this!
EDIT: Actually wait, pulled from the Ubuntu site, there will be 2 versions:
Entry level (no desktop convergence)
1ghz cortex A9
512-1gb ram
4-8gb emmc + sd
High end (desktop convergence)
Quad core A9/Intel Atom
1gb ram
32gb emmc + sd
I'm sure the talented devs here will be able to manage something to get the high end onto the HD2, looks kind of overspec'd to me

Actually no, the high end phones running Ubuntu will also have a dock which will provide full desktop functionality (mouse, keyboard and
monitor). This is because the mobile version of Ubuntu will run on two cores, and the full Ubuntu desktop will run on the other two cores.
According to the requirements, the HD2 will be able to run Ubuntu Phone itself, though.
Hope this clears things up

Believe the code in question is here. But don't think its the sorta thing that's portable. Anyone try it as it is? Can't spot in on first glance but I take it that the build model is taken from the device at some point, I guess if we can spoof that and see how far it boots.
Installed it on my gnexus today. It's nice but its just a preview . Almost nothing worked right. But it did get me excited!! Can't wait for the real deal now!

Ill be tackling this once I can get the source downloaded, so many people are trying to get it that its crashing their repo, and since its ~12gigs, it might take a little while lol
I've token the time to extract the Ubuntu Touch Nexus 4 Dev Preview core system and put it into a ext4 Image to make easier for people to see exactly what's installed and be able to configure it without having to fully install it.
You can find the Operating System Image here - www.ZenfulApps.com

Hi z3nful, I have been trying on and off all day to DL the image with varying degrees of success. The zip seems to have downloaded successfully but is only around 100mb (ranging from 79 to 130)(tried from chrome on pc and linux, and firefox). Any chance of a mirror? Thanks

Ok I have extracted the image to sd on fat32 renamed it UbuntuTouch.ext4.img and put it in linux-files/system
The linload app manages to mount the image, but when i try to start vnc, i get
"bash: vncserver: command not found" in terminal after some other stuff, leaving me at the prompt.
I have tried to connect using other vnc viewers but no joy yet.
I have partitioned my 32gb card with 16gb fat32, 10gb ext4, 4gb ext4(empty) and 256mb linux swap. And ideally would like to use the 3rd partition for the image. Do i just put the UbuntuTouch.ext4.img file there and point to it with linload?
Thanks again
Edit; using tytung jb 1.3a on nativeSD
The Touch preview doesn't have vnc install when you first download it, and from what I've seen looking around in it, there isn't a command to start up unity.
One thing you can try is to install vncserver, then see if you can get it to load an "ubuntu-session" from the xstartup file. I'm not sure if that will work though :/
I've almost got the source finished downloading, once thats done ill be trying for a working kernel to see if I can get this setup as its own rom

[Q] How can I get Nexus player APKs for the emulator?

I'm interested in developing an app for the google TV platform. I would like to try some native apps to see how the design and UX have changed, but sadly the Nexus Player is not available in my country yet and I'm still waiting for google to send me the ADT-1
I can use the AVD manager in Android Studio to emulate a Google TV, but I don't know how I could get access to the android TV optimized apps to install them on my emulator. Does anyone have an idea? I am particularly interested in trying the youtube app, can someone with a Nexus Player pull it from the device and send it to me please?
I know this is a lot to ask for my first post, but I promise I'll contribute back to the forum
We just received the two ADT-1 units from google! That really was fast! We ask for them less than a week ago. They came with american power plug, so we can't use them right now, but tomorrow we'll get some power adapters. I guess I'm gonna be able to get the apps myself now

What sort of apps are you planning on developing?
I'm afraid I can't tell you much about that right now. I work for a very small startup and we are about to sign a contract with a TV manufacturer that's going to use Android TV for their new TV models next year. The deal is not even signed yet, but I was eager to start testing Android TV on the emulator.
Cool, good luck!
Good luck buddy

Yeah, madcatz.. I'm guessing they just wrote the mojo off... Shame.
Nice! Impressive hardware, I like the 4GB ram and SATA port on it.. can you install apps directly on it instead of the internal storage?
Has a unbuntu port.. which is pretty cool for a portable desktop!
Pricey with no controller.. interesting to compare that with the X1 shield.
Mad Cats hates MOJO. They want you to just buy one from them, so they don't go out of business.

I like Mojo Hardware the controller is great. I'll know in the future not to buy anything that requires software from them. And Ouya the company with no management can you believe they ordered more Tegra 3 consoles in 2015? The sad thing is there are games with allot of talent on Ouya. I don't understand how a company stays in business with no public relations or marketing? Maybe they will emerge as a consulting firm for what not to do when you start business:cyclops:
So I'm running CM 12, and I can tell you that the only reason my MOJO is still in my house is because of this ROM. The hardware is great, and CM 12 fixes a lot of software issues with stock ROM. However, features like a game mapper should have been added. Mad Catz is a terrible company and I promise to never by another product from them again.
The controller is nice, but I can't play the games I want to play because the controller is not supported. This is why Mad Catz should have created a game mapper. Also, I miss vibration.
How about this, OUYA and Mad Catz Team up to make their next product. Even if this happened I would purchase the Shield because I can't trust novice companies like OUYA.

Definitely the Shield. One reason is the price at $199, and another reason is to get that game streaming service which is similarly priced to Playstation Network/Xbox live. I can get PC games without buying a PC

Yeah the shield for sure!
X1 and the new shield library at the announcement looks great (ie the doom pack) and a controller and it's AndroidTV.
The obox will have the K1 at launch and will have a harddrive! and be modular , so you can (in theory) swap it out with a X1.. whether that happens is a gamble.. ie mojo getting kitkat:silly:
Tronsmart Draco Telnos is impressive because of the hardware and a linux port
Edit, Me personally, I think the MOJO is good enough hardware and software and with ports of CM12 and AndroidTV even more so.

I liked ouya from the start, but when the dev kits came out and saw how cheap the controllers were with missing start/select buttons then the free the funds scam then no need to make it free.. nah..
I'm surprised people are buy the hardware, let alone the games!
I'm guessing ouya must have a shelf presences at big chain stores.. mah:silly:
They might fold someday and get bought out by someone like snail games which is making the obox

Does the Cm mod have a port for Ouya Everywhere? When they got more units in with the Tegra 3 that has about finished me as far as the Ouya console.I mean how stupid is that to spend money that could go to building Ouya 2?.Seems they make one f??k up after another. It blows my mind :cyclops:
I just wish the shield had a harddrive. I am going to stick it out with the Mojo and Draco for awhile and see how it all comes together.

Shatshi Matrix is still on CM12. I've posted the updated Ouya Everywhere apks in the Ouya Fourms. He is currently testing to see if the updated files will work on CM12 and will hopefully post positive results.

Was trying to wait for Shatshi Matrix to report the results, but haven't heard anything. Since there have been a few that downloaded the updated OuyaApk files and have been quiet, I figured I'd update the MOJO and find out for myself.
End Result: The update OuyaApks (1.2.897) ARE WORKING with CM12.
So once again you can have OUYA EVERYWHERE on MOJO but now with lollipop, and now use apps that manage overscan that is supported on Lollipop.

This will be my first time flashing a OS on Android manually. I noticed there are a couple methods that can be used. Which is the easiest with good documentation for a newbie? I am looking forward to the CM mod as I hear it's great? Also would anyone be willing to assist me with the the Ouya install not sure where to get the source files? I do have some games from Ouya I would like to keep. Thanks for your patience with me I did manage to root so this can't be that difficult :silly:

1) I used an app from the play store called "Flashify" to backup kernel, and recovery.
2) I placed the latest build, recommended gapps onto an sd card from the CM12 page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57575652&postcount=1
3) I used "Flashify" to enter recovery mode and followed the installation instructions from the CM12 page.
4) After installation and setup I installed the updated OuyaApks I posted here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59461876&postcount=51
From here, currently I'm trying to restore root. Still looking through the forums to see if there are existing answers before trying something on my own. Good luck with your upgrade.

Okay I followed above. I copied zip file to sdcard. Downloaded flashify. In flashify I ran backup no problem. I then choose flash from zip, choose mod file, in pop up choose wipe per instructions. It then asks if I want to boot to recovery, I select yes. It then boots to recovery starts to flash and says error. I then reboot it goes back to stock rom? I obviously am probably missing something stupid :cyclops: What am I missing?

Buyer's remorse?

Hey everybody.
I've been using media streamers for a bit.
Started with a Chromecast, then Amazon Fire stick and now with a Nexus Player.
Previous streamers felt limited but the nexus player felt better.
Now I've been thinking about upgrading to a Apple TV 4 or a Nvidia Shield tv.
My question is: Do you guys feel remorse of having bought this?
Performance aside is a bit expensive compared to other boxes.
I have a pc with a GTX970 and I was thinking maybe this will work to stream some games to my living room.
Another thing, how far away from a Shield TV 2 are we? This will surely have a price a drop when they announce the second gen, although while there is no much competition I think Nvidia will sit a bit.
You've had plenty of views but no replies...so I'll chip in lol
Do I regret buying one....no. The only thing that bothers me is how spartan the app store is for Android TV, obviously this can change in the future. If you already have a Nexus then you're already using Android TV. Is it expensive? Considering the price of the Fire TV gaming bundle...I actually think the 16GB model is priced well. I got the Nvidia remote free when I bought mine, you've literally just missed a promotion to get an extra controller. Perhaps you'd rather wait for another promotion before purchasing to get the most for your money. Buying the 16GB model and upgrading the storage via MicroSD or USB HDD would make the most sense rather than the expensive Pro model with 500GB.
Yes you can gamestream from your PC, this feature is under the SHIELD HUB...you could also try installing Moonlight which might offer slightly better performance. I've tried the Geforce NOW service and the games do play quite well to be fair. Although I will say for best results forget about wifi and hard wire the SHIELD to the router...even if you have to buy some inexpensive homeplug network adapters.
What I have done is install SPMC (KODI). I have customised it to work as a homescreen/dashboard essentially, it auto starts when I power on. This way I can set shortcuts to what I want...my retro arcade (Hyperspin), Shield Hub, Remote Play (PS4), Netflix, Radio, my movie and music collection on my home PC...you get the picture
I have no idea what Nvidia are planning. Although I would guess that we would see the Shield Tablet updated before we see a new SHIELD TV. The tablet still uses Kepler tech...the Shield TV is Maxwell. If there was a new SHIELD TV it would surely be based on Pascal
Do It
I was actually reconsidering the same like you also the apple tv.
Now I'm happy i choose the Shield! Nvidia allows you to unlock the bootloader and root the system without losing warranty, which is a great thing.
I wasn't happy with the Leanback launcher as there is a lot of stuff i don't like and the apps i installed via APK and Aptoide TV didn't show up (only with help of the sideload launcher).
So i rooted it and set a differnt launcher as default! now it is really great! I have adaway, Firefox with several adons and kodi with husham wizard!
The box is extremly fast! I have a logitech usbe mouse and keyboard connected and the box also works with my logitech universal remote.
Alsow with marshmello (shiled os 3.1) you can add a microsd with up to 128 GB to expand the internal storage!
I found an amazing app called "AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)" that you can use to mirror your tablet/mobile phone screen beside the standard YouTube casting
The only thing i'm not happy with is that it doesn't have a optical/coax audio output.
The apple tv is for sure much more limited and has by far not the game performance of the shield!
extra controller w/purchase @ gamestop. i do not know when the promotion ends, but as of this morning...its still there!

Maybe try SPMC, it's a fork of KODI. It's being developed with the SHIELD in mind. Unlike KODI, you can actually launch android apps from within SPMC (so you don't really need sideload launcher). It also integrates with the leanback launcher, providing recommendations from SPMC. Voice search from the launcher will also have links to your SPMC library. The voice feature also works with the keyboard in SPMC, so you can speak rather than type in the search box

Airplay is for Apple devices, the SHIELD natively casts from android devices. I don't buy Apple stuff, so I've never tried it but KODI/SPMC has Airplay built in...just turn it on in the services. I'm glad to hear you're happy with the device...I always enjoy seeing the different ways people set them up and use them!

I haven't rooted my SHIELD. I could be wrong but I think the controller issues were more to do with people flashing a different ROM after rooting...the SHIELD game pad would need to be wired for example, although that may have changed by now. As we are talking about game pads. One of the reasons root would appeal to me, is that it's required for the Sixaxis app. This app will allow the DS4 pad to connect via bluetooth (lag free), as I have the Remote Play app installed this would be nice.
My phone is rooted with a custom ROM and recovery. I don't really feel that I need say an Adblocker on the SHIELD TV to be fair. Of course there are plenty of other good reasons to root the device. In fairness I am at a point now where I know how I want the devices to be, so the thought of wiping it and doing it over "properly" is getting more appealing. Rooting would help me fix a few niggling things...for example I really would like to be able to manually add the MAME 2014 core to Retroarch, I need this core for my Retro Arcade but the buildbot for Retroarch won't add it currently.
Wish you all the best playing with your devices

i actually bought mine @ gamestop in my town about 3 weeks ago. it is the 16gb version w/one controller included.... returned it today for a full refund (they put the amount on a gift card) and have just re-ordered the same unit from their website where it is the same price but now includes 2 controllers. used the gift card as payment and am just paying the shipping fee. should have the new one in a few days.
The controller works fine if you root. However, if you install a custom ROM, you will need to connect the controller to the Shield with a micro-USB cable.
The only real problem I have with the Shield is that Android TV is not nearly as capable as full Android.
Thanks a lot guys.
Hopefully I can sell my nexus player with my x360 pad on it and recoup some money for the shield tv.

Yes, online only. Bought mine in store 3 weeks ago with one controller. Returned yesterday for full refund which they put on a gift card. Used gift card at home to purchase online w/the extra controller. I'll be without unit for a few days while waiting for the new one, but I dont mind the wait if I can get a unit with the extra $60 controller

Thanks.
But sucks they don't take my paypal from outside USA.
And they are expensive on Ebay.
Wait, Amazon has it with the second controller for 200.

Great!! :good:
Using the 16gb model on my Sony Bravia TV with matching home theater setup with TV remote function with all shield apps including Kodi.
Missed out on free remote offer but pleasantly surprised that original TV remote gives me full functionality and more.
My only regret is that I didn't get it sooner. [emoji13]
My roku3 is collecting dust big time.
Have not subscribed to cable since 2010. Before shield was running MK-908 and was happy with setup, but the shield blows everything else out of the water.
Pp.
sent from my stone/stock S6e using microwave technology.
Yes I love mine the only thing I dislike is I bought the Pro model and you don't have full access to the HD unless you do some skull doggery. If it were easy to put a SSD in it and actually be able to hook it up to my pc that thing would be totally awesome 10/10 but alas you can't. I say get the 16GB model and go from there.
Thanks guys, got mine today.
Now to read some guides on rooting this thing.

fairly simple guide here:
http://nvidiashieldzone.com/shield-android-tv/nvidia-shield-tv-16gb-root-m/
* be sure to have a usb mouse ready....you'll need it to make the "swipe to flash" when you are in TWRP. i tried a keyboard (with trackpad), the remote and even the phone app....but only the mouse would work for that step.
Thanks.
Rooted it yesterday.
Only having trouble setting up Dolphin, can't configure the shield controller and can't find an ini online.
I bought my shield to run as a Plex server because all Plex could talk about was "Shield is THE server..." It's not until you get it running that you learn that is cannot do a lot of things that my PC server handles easily. Then you find out that there's no Music Plus and missing transcoders and, btw, I hope you still have that PC because you will need it to manage your Shield Plex Server and migrate your media. Oh, and wait until you learn about file sharing with the Shield...allow yourself a little time! The punchline is that performance is tame. I do not serve 4K media, but 1080p was great from the PC that runs as a vm with 4GB.
And I made the mistake of tossing an extra remote and the (very cool and expensive) stand in my cart.
Oh well. I really need to start playing games.
