easy to tether using android mobile - Acer Iconia A500

Just found out how easy it is to tether my mobile phone to my tablet using the 3g network. Previously looked at lots of tethering apps on android play but none are needed (nor worked). Finally found an Acer Oceanic movie on UTube showing how easy it is. So, no USB cable needed nor tethering app - its all there already on your Android phone and your A500. Now I can use the Internet anywhere I want providing there's a 3G signal. The method used is to create a local hotspot which you then connect to, and the download signal gives 3 bars. Great !!

Yeah through Android it works great... The reason for the apps is unfortunately many carriers (especially in the US) lock out that feature on the phones to try and charge people to activate it. Any way to make an extra buck!

I just run FoxFi on my phone and that gives me a free wifi hotspot which I can access with my tablet. 3G, 4G, whatever I'm on, it works.

easy tethering
OK and thanks for that. I tried your method and while it did function OK compared with the method I used the download speed was very slow.

I have the hotspot option on my Motorola Atrix...... works VERY well...

[Q] Is there any way to make the Sense USB tether free?

When you plug in the phone and it brings up the list, with share internet at the bottom. Is there any way to make that option free, or replace it within the menu with something that is free?
Yes, but it needs to be written into a custom ROM.
ya, I know that lots of custom roms have that option, but why not just use wireless tether? If you're still on stock rom, just go into the market and download it. It's free and works great.
Why not just use the once sprint bundles with the phone? The sprint mobile hotspot one.
Is there some disadvantage to that?
the mobile hotspot is unavailable in the same way usb tether is unavailabe. Sprint does not want you to use your phone for tethering without paying them an extra $30 a month.
Can't you use EasyTether from the market? Doesn't require root. Try the free version and if you like it you could buy the $10 version that allows https access. I have never used it but the description states it can do this without root probably because it is using USB so cannot work as a hotspot for multiple PCs at one time and you did state you cared about the USB tethering vs wireless.
I believe barnecle ? I think is the name, also allows usb.
Barnacle is for root as are all wireless tether apps..

Why USB tether?
I would like USB tether because most of the time when I don't have internet, I also don't have power. Why would I plug my phone into my computer, only to turn on the computer's wifi and turn on the phones wifi to make the connection?
If I can only have the 3g/4g radio going, and no wifi on either device, I get better battery life all around.
Here is what I use for USB tethering. It requires a little bit of setup (and adb), but does not require root, and is completely free. In my opinion it works much better than EasyTether or PDA Net

I use Ubuntu, so I can help with setup if anyone needs it. For OSX and Windows, you are on your own.

Virgin Mobile WiFi tether to TF w/out root

Ok guys, I spent a lot time to find the best way for me to get Internet on my Transformer. I tried Bluetooth tethering with rooted MetroPCS LG Optimus M without any success my devices paired but not connected and I dont see any profile options when I tap wrench next to my phone on TF. WiFtether didnt work either, TF doesnt see WiFi hot spot.
So I have bought Virgine Mobile LG Optimus V and got 300 minutes with unlimited data for 25$ a month, then I downloaded Quick settings app from Market and in hidden settings made visible Wifi hotspot. Turned it on and Tada! TF has seen hotspot and got connected to it, I run speed test and have around 1.3Mb dl/700kb ul. Not sure will Autotether app work this way or no. But you dont have to have root! Everything works fine.
Yep, your old phone was creating an Ad-Hoc WiFi network that your Transformer cant see unless you root it and add the funcionality. With your new phone it has Infrastructure WiFi tether built in and the tablet can see that easier.

[Q] Use phone 3g on tablet?

Is there a way to plug our phones into tablets and use the 3g service from our phones to our tablets.... Sorta like a modem for on the go.. Instead of using wifi tethering? Not sure if it's been done or not thought it would be a good idea tho
Do a quick search, it has been discussed extensively in other threads. You can use PdaNet Tablet if your phone support bluetooh.
No. Simple answer.
The 500 does not have this capability, Because it doesn;t have the radio to accommodate it.
Physical limitation
so my best bet for Internet on the go is tethering from my phone?
If you want to connect your tablet to a phone you will need to root your tablet.
The tablet doesn't support Ad-hoc connectivity out of the box. Many wi-fi hotspot features on phones use Ad-hoc to connect.
I also remember a while back I was trying to see if I could connect my stock Tablet to the personal hotspot of somebody's iPhone 3gs (connects via bluetooth) but it didn't work. I remember rooting the tablet and installing Thor's ROM and found out that now I could connect to the personal hotspot. Not sure what was in Thor's ROM to make this work though.
And as another poster said, you can try pdanet if you have an android phone. I tried it before I had an Android phone and it wouldn't work (even though the phone still had pdanet on it), and have not tried it since because my phone has wifi-hotspot.

Depends on your phone really. Android is easy enough rooted + wifi tether for root. Non-smartphone takes a little work, but isn't that bad. Check tut on getting usb to 'dumbphone' modem working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452800
...or you can use 3G modem and take these steps to use it with your tablet http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633086

FoxFi Wireless Tether

Has anyone tried using FoxFi for wireless tethering on the Turbo 2? I'm considering getting the phone since I can do so and keep my unlimited data, but I rely on the mobile hotspot for my Internet at home. I know I can switch between my current rooted S4 and the Turbo 2, but really rather be able to use the paid version of FoxFi on the until root is achieved. I've tried the free version of FoxFi and it works fine, it just has a 500 MB limit per use before it disconnects. I like the look of the Turbo 2 and think it'd be a great phone to have. Any information that can be provided would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Oh, and for those who've every used a recent Samsung phone and miss the dual window thing, there's a cool app in the store called SideControl that provides dual window function with the use of another app called xHaloFloatingWindow you can either find in the XDA forums or download through the Xposed app.
It won't work
OP. You're saying that FoxFi works on your non-rooted, completely stock Lollipop Turbo 2? What firmware version are you on?
I loveD using the app in the past, but ever since KitKat it has been blocked on Motorola phones as far as I know. Would be awfully nice if it was usable again.
I don't have the phone, I was just considering it.
You can use USB tether and then from the computer in pdanet there's an option for WiFi tether where you can make your own WiFi name and password. It worked on the original Turbo, but sometimes it would have issues connecting to other devices. I tried it on the turbo 2, but I think there was an issue with it working.
The was my old post in the OG Turbo section

I have found a way to use WiFi tether, but you need a few things.
1. FoxFi/PDANet
2. Laptop
3. Micro-USB cable
4. Phone
There is a work around for Wi-Fi tether though using FoxFi/PDANet. It requires a laptop though. When you use USB mode, connect it to your laptop and then when you right click the pdanet icon again there's an option that say "WI-FI share". Click on that and then it'll give you an option to set up a router name and password. I don't know if only certain laptops are capable of this, but I have a Dell 15R and it works just fine. At least then I can connect to my tablet and old s4 that way.
Your phone will need to be connected to your laptop the whole time, but at least you'll be able to connect to multiple devices at the same time.

The only non root method for Wifi Teher I have Found for S7

WIFI TETHER for Sprint S7 Sorry for typo
I am on a Sprint S7 G930PVPS4APK1 ANDORID VERSION 6.0.1. I live in the sticks and wifi tether is the only way I can get high speed for home. The quick reboot method no longer works. I have rooted other phones, but am no expert, and hesitate to try rooting my S7. Can't afford the ins if I brick it.
I have found From lots of reading (thanks to many) that using PDAnet+ alows me to use USB tethering to a laptop. The lap top will then work as a WIFI hotspot with what seems like reasonable speed. I was able to use the wifi on a tablet and stream Netflix, which is what I really want. Works great. It will be worth the $8 bucks to unlock PDAnet for unlimited data. So this works as Jan 2017 for free wifi hotspot.. I have seen no other recent references to this. i should mention i have unlimited data so have not
I do have a question While the WIfi hotspot from the tethered laptop works great, I can not seem to get my Chrome cast to connect to it. I really need this. It satys problem connecting to wifi router. I can't figure out why. The only clue? I constantly get a pop up on the laptop saying intel intelligent wifi is disabled while app running? any ideas would be very helpful TIA
