Never download. but I'm sure it's being exceeded when I play starcraft II lol.
I did stream Netflix heavily and would get capped to edge after hitting 5gb+ but that was months ago. I never received messages or got regulated after I stopped up until today while I was browsing casually.

I think they are randomly sending ppl messages. They sent my gf a message today saying about parental control for 4.99 so kids dont go over minutes or messages. We have 3 lines and all three have unlimited everything so message was pretty lame.

That's probably how they busted you, not quite aware of any phone that can play Starcraft II, all they would need to know is the servers used for the game... might have just been excessive use I suppose.

Sent them an official letter asking them how they have come to this conclusion.
Have they been monitoring your traffic? If yes, did they have police permission to do so, and if yes on what grounds. Declare that you consider taking legal action against them for privacy concerns.
Yeah there have been rumors that they'll start charging for those they believe are tethering without permission.
The only way they can discover this is if they are sniffing/recording your packets, and this is a major privacy concern, as even secure (https) communication can be read if they record the keys in a packet stream.
All your bank info, and email, and any other service you use, via tethering or just on the phone is potentially at risk if they are snooping around to see if you're tethering.

Your device broadcasts it's ID pretty much everywhere it goes. All they have to do is look for tablets going through their servers...

You're going to have to define what you mean, because being in Networking/IT for 8 years, I know what you're saying but they still have to sniff your packets.
I think they're going based on data amount, from what people are saying. Which is why my family has not gotten a notice.
I definitely abused the tethering privileges. I'm probably one of the select few to get this notice.

But aren't you also breaking the rules since you're tethering without a tethering plan?
My concern isn't about tethering my concern is that they are spying on data itself to tell that you are tethering. I work for a company that uses https for web mail. And that's a major privacy concern since we handle sensitive data.

Well, from my limited knowledge, I believe that a service broadcasts certain information about itself in order to communicate effectively with other devices...
Hulu block android.
Web pages render for mobile devices.
When I log on to my bank from a new device, I have authenticate it (and it's not cookie based).
Digital fingerprints contain a ton of information that you, the user, make available to any service you interact with...
My guess is that the carrier looks at large data users, and scrutinizes the use. I would also say that the carrier is well within their rights to confirm that services using their network are authorized to do so?
Correct me if i'm wrong - it won't be the first time... xD
What I don't agree with is the fact that, if I pay for 5G of data, what the hell does it matter how I use it? If I tether my nook to download music it's wrong, but if I download it on my phone and transfer via SD that's OK? Just wierd to me...

+Hulu, can tell based on browser data that is sent over http. and I believe flash also provides data about what system you're on. (also they can tell by your public ip address what you're probably using their service from, like a cell phone)
+Webpages, also they get browser responces in headers over http. And redirect you to a mobile page. (eg. m.website.com)
+Bank accounts, I know exactly what you mean about this, they normally can tell from IP address only. But other than that it's cookie, and Mac address(probably from a java call?)
In my opinion, I believe it's going beyond the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 2000:

But I don't know the full details of the act, I'm going on my understanding.

I find it insanely ridiculous that this Skype update didn't bring Video calling to the Xoom ( hell, not even to the Thunderbolt). Is there anybody working on a customized apk to have video calling work on the Xoom( unrooted, just install the apk no mods or anything). Link to a thread? Thanks

Not sure, I did see an apk for other devices (Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S 2, etc) but none for Xoom. Anyone have a clue if this has worked for Xoom?

Here you could find modified apk that works with other devices. I tried to install it on the XOOM, but I couldn't pass registration page. It's just return you to main screen without any feedback.

Guys I got a Skype update for my Transformer via Android Market and it sort of looks like a tablet app. High resolution graphics and stuff, you know. Also, it mentioned video calling on start up, I think - but I couldn't figure out how to use it. This is definately coming, give it a few more days
Skype almost worked
I downloaded and installed Skype awhile ago and was able to create an account but then it said it was unable to connect me to the network
Dunno why it wouldn't connect to my wi-fi network ... but it was exciting for a few minutes when it looked like it was going to work. After creating an account it went into connecting mode and until the error message popped up about not being able to connect it looked like it was going to work.
So close ... it almost made it. Perhaps it would work for someone on Verizon.
So far the only device added to the list of compatible devices is the Nexus S 4g. Not a single tablet.

Skype with video chat for the thunderbolt was leaked like 3 months ago. I'm surprised it wasnt released during the official launch especially since the Thunderbolt was the first device skype with video was supposed to launch on.

Be aware that Skype is based upon a distributed network. This means that when you are connected to Skype your computer is part of their network and can/will be used to connect other users together without asking your permission.
Quite possibly phones and tablets are less than ideal mechanisms to be integral parts of their sharing network.
I have uninstalled Skype from my computers to prevent this indiscriminate use.

Not quite accurate. Skype has a distributed network of supernodes, true. It is also true that supernodes are regular skype clients (much as bit torrent and other p2p networks are). It is not true that all clients are supernodes. Only clients on public addresses not behind a proxy are eligible as supernodes. Android clients are not eligible (skype does not have root privileges and can not open a port on 80 and 443), nor are clients behind a NAT.
Feel free to not use the service, but do not do so based on a misunderstanding out how skype works.
EDIT: explained in greater detail why android in specific can not act as a supernode. (Discounting the fact that supernodes are chosen based on cpu power and bandwidth, making its selection unlikely even if it were possible.)

I'm wanting to use a VPN to mask my browsing when in public/using free wi-fi/at work/etc. I'm fine with setting it up on my home PC (I was originally going to use Hamachi/Privoxy but I don't think Hamachi is supported on Android) or even paying a small fee but I'm not going to be torrenting or accessing any secure information so I don't care about VPN logging/DMCA issues/etc.
I saw Android has a built-in VPN client. Is that any good? I also noticed "Rooted AnyConnect" (yes I'm rooted, running AOSP+ 4.2.1) on the Play Store. What about that?

For what you want to accomplish, you should consider purchasing a subscription to a personal VPN provider such as Witopia or PureVPN. Android's built-in VPN functionality will directly support most protocols such as PPTP and L2TP/IPsec.

Probably the most secure of anything free and maybe even the paid ones as well, speed isnt terrible either. I get 1.5mb/s down and 2mb/s up when routing all data in and out of my phone through this.

As far as VPN choice is concerned. First you have to decide. whether you want a better experience or you just want a cheap one.
I personally go for better experience approach. because slow speed and advertisement is way too troublesome.

NordVPN works fine for me, your link however does not. VPN is about security an anonymity, the "experience" as you say can have a little bit to do with speed, but also ease of use and if you are even secure at all. A proper VPN is one that does not keep records of any kind on you, most VPN services do. This means that no matter how much you are paying, and no matter how fast of speeds you get through the VPN, you are doing nothing but paying money to someone pointlessly. The first thing to decide about using a VPN is: "Do I want to be secure and anonymous online", the second question is: "how much speed am I willing to pay for". Those are the only two questions of any relevance when dealing with a VPN. DO yourself a favor and actually research whatever company you are considering, because if they keep logs on you or are in a country that is required to comply with any little request from your government then that company is completely pointless to use.

Nordpvn is working now. It actually emailed and asked about the problem, and they said that they were migrating their server. ie on Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm (+5 GMT) that is when i tried connecting to their website. Yes, i am concerned about the log issues, because you are absolutely right that there is no point if your privacy is compromised for whatsoever reason. But here is the thing we are not sure if they actually dont maintain any user log. That is another story.
I was thinking to go for PureVPN. I did some research, read blogs and I think it will cater my needs for what I am willing to pay for.

totally agreed with you free VPN are limited as well in terms of servers, speed and obviously with very few basic feature and the most important thing the keep logs that is a big No for me

I bought a crappy Belkin wireless N router and it was ok, gave me about 180kBps on download.
But it broke down...
So now im offering 100 bucks for a good router.. was going for a good ASUS ac router but N is cheaper, so I was not sure if I should buy such good router with ISP bottlenecking the router speeds..
What do you think folks!?

I was daying, im going to buy an ASUS RT-N66U router. but my ISP service is 4mbps, So i dont know if this is an overkill router for my current speed...
But I also wanted a long range router, but i think this one is a bit overkill dont you think?

the N66u is a GREAT router. But that is way to much for your needs. a simple $19 TP-Link would fit the bill for you. even an old relible WRT54G would as well for that internet speed.

Although I think you already ordered the router, I'm reassuring your choice: a good, fast router helps for local traffic too. It's a huge difference from G/100Mbps to N/1Gbps when it comes to wireless/wired transfers between your local devices, be them computers, laptops, phones, TVs or whatever else.
PS: You should emigrate to Romania where your usual download speed would be around 4-5MB/s for as low as 8-10$ a month!

omg, im paying for $15, IS of 4mbp...this is not good. But yeah, I believe network transfer and range should compensate for my inversion. Also I wanted to pay and learn/try something for experience because I use it on my everyday life, just like an smartphone.

I personally use a Linksys EA2700 which was around 100$ here in Romania.
I don't fully recommend it as I sent back two crashing units (original software). The third one seems to be ok, but it runs dd-wrt (only when I go to the third router was dd-wrt stable for this model).
For more recommendations I'd go to smallnetbuilder.com and dd-wrt.com.

Thanks, I just made up my mind, I will go for the ASUS RT-N66U.
Dont know why you all prefer DD-WRT FW xD. Whats your fav feature in that firmware?
I think I will play with it a few weeks then, go for dd-wrt to try.

Well... at least with my EA2700 I had three major reasons to switch to dd-wrt:
1. The original has at least one security flaw that nobody seems to patch it.
2. I really got used to local DNS (been using it for years with my previous router - WRT54GL)
3. I prefer running dynamic DNS on the router and dd-wrt has support for no-ip.

I agree, TL-WR1043ND is highly regarded. Just be sure that it is the second version, which is blue, like on the site.

Let me remind you why I picked dd-wrt over the original EA2700 firmware:
1. The original has at least one security flaw that nobody seems to patch it.
2. I really got used to local DNS (been using it for years with my previous router - WRT54GL)
3. I prefer running dynamic DNS on the router and dd-wrt has support for no-ip.
4. The interface is better than the original.
So it looks as wifi calling should go out to tmobiles nexus 6 by the end of the first quarter.. and volte for the nexus 6 and tmobile is nearly done with testing http://www.tmonews.com/2015/02/wi-fi-calling-coming-to-nexus-6-by-the-end-of-q1/

Awesome I've been wondering when it will be enable. Looking forward to both VoLTE and Wifi-Calling!!!
Any ideas how it will work? Will it be an app compatible with any custom rom or will it be something rom builders will need to go integrate?

But you have to return the router after you terminate services or they will bill you for 100 dollars.
Something to keep in mind, and it will still be 100 dollars a year from now. Or two. Or three.. in three the router is definitely going to be less than 100 dollars market value.
It's still a free 5ghz AC router...I think I can remember to return a router

I had a dual band router with openwrt, and when the 2.4GHz hardware died (which happened far earlier than it should have, probably due to WRT overdriving the radio), and replaced it with a Netgear N900, expecting to get a wired router with WRT and run it as a WAP. Turns out there was not a single feature I used in WRT that was missing in the stock firmware, and the thing was rock solid as far as stability goes. I replaced the Netgear with the ASUS one from T-Mo (actually turned it into a WAP for better basement coverage) and it has even MORE features out of the box, like more powerful QOS support. Openwrt/DD-WRT/Tomato are nice, but they are far more than the vast majority of people need - even power users like me. I'm not using my CCNA skills to do stuff like routing multiple subnets here at home, and if I did, I would grab a used Cisco 861 and run the ASUS as a WAP behind it rather than messing with WRT.
Need that volte, hate dropping down to 3g when making voice calls then waiting for lte to kick in.

Dude, why so hostile? Did tmo and/or asus personally offend you at some point in your life?
I've been using the tmo/asus router for a month now and it works great. Not everybody needs high level, supertech setups. Some people just want a wifi signal that works well...

I have been an enterprise SysAdmin for 15 years. I have been working with network equipment (the enterprise Cisco stuff, not your wannabe WRT crap) for over 10. I am neither a kid, nor a hack, thanks.
What's your network background that gives your opinion on WRT so valid, and what features make it so special? Because like I said, I have used it and there was nothing in it that made me miss it when I stopped.

I second you on the wrt stuff. Yes while it is nice it is not necessary for home use at all. Especially since the Asus-68u / TMO-1900 AC (same router/WAP etc.) has it built in for the most part and actually works better than WRT crap-ware as I determine it. I to would get a used Cisco or aerohive or enterprise level hardware over any home-based consumer router for security and other things that just are not available. But that is not this subject I have the TMO-1900AC and Asus-68u at home I use the TMO as WAP and Asus as primary this works very well for wifi calling etc. I believe wifi calling will be built in to the phone on update not a wannabe app like sprint.
T-Mobile is reporting that WiFi calling won't be in the 5.1 update... This is getting old.
