Microsoft will show Windows Phone 8, the next version of its mobile operating system, during an event to be held on June 20 -- a date which conveniently falls between Apple's WWDC 2012 and Google I/O.
June is all set to be packed full of mobile operating system goodness. In less than a week’s time, Apple will hold its Worldwide Developer Conference, where it will almost certainly reveal iOS 6, then at the end of the month during Google I/O, the next version of Android will likely be one of the stars. Microsoft announced it would hold a Windows Phone Summit in-between a few months ago, but it wasn’t clear exactly what the June 20 event would be about. Invitations have now begun to circulate, and happily it’s going to give us “a sneak peek of the future of Windows Phone.”
At the moment, the future of Windows Phone as we know it is Windows Phone 8, or Apollo as it’s also known.
Leaked details on Apollo indicate the OS has been completely rewritten, improving on many of the strict hardware restrictions Microsoft imposed on early Windows Phones.
This could include support for higher screen resolutions, dual-core and possibly quad-core processors, user-expandable memory and NFC. Additionally, Skype may be integrated into the OS, and Windows Phone 8 could bring about the demise of Microsoft’s Zune software.
As well as introducing the OS, Microsoft could also put existing Windows Phone owners out of their misery, by telling them whether Apollo will be compatible with devices running Mango or not. Reports have varied so far, with some saying yes, and others saying a very emphatic no.
A bold move for Microsoft
With the mobile industry emphasizing software enhancements as much — if not more — than hardware innovation recently, the opportunity to see the three major players’ future plans in the same month is excellent news for consumers.
By the end of this month, anyone planning on purchasing a new phone later this year, or switching to a new ecosystem, could potentially make an informed choice on the spot. It’s a bold move on Microsoft’s part to park itself right in the middle of its competitors big events, and shows how serious it is about turning its low market share around. It’s a completely different approach to Samsung, who avoided the press blitz associated with Mobile World Congress, and instead launched the Galaxy S3 at a solo event several months after.
Chances are it’s not just going to be the schedules of these preview events that coincide either. A new iPhone could arrive around September or October, Google has been rumored to open its new online store around October or November, and when’s the expected release of both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8? Yep, September or October. The latter half of 2012 is looking very exciting indeed.
I have been waiting for windows phone to come good. With W8 and WP8 this should happen. Looking forward to moving over to WP8 when my contract expires later in the year. Personally think it is going to be a BIG year end for Microsoft. Can't wait

This may answer some questions as to why we aren't seeing as many new builds past Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Actually this raises more questions about the future of our less than supported devices like, will this new version of mobile Windows platform be compatible or will our current software be supported by it. The current Windows Mobile itself is a version of Windows Embedded Compact Edition. Neverless I look forward to the adventure that awaits us with this extended life version of Windows Mobile that will now be called Windows Embedded Handheld.

The Windows Embedded Handheld OS will come out later this year and be based on the Windows Mobile 6.5 technology, said David Kelley, product unit manager for Windows Embedded at Microsoft, at an event in New York.
In 2011, the company will release a new version of Windows Embedded Handheld, which will be based on Windows Embedded Compact 7 OS, Kelley said. The OS will feature a richer and immersive user experience, and improve on reliability and security features, Kelley said.
The company wants to provide backward compatibility and a clear upgrade path from Windows Mobile 6.5 to the upcoming operating systems, Kelley said. That should extend the life cycle of existing Windows Mobile devices such as smartphones.
Microsoft announced Windows Embedded Compact 7 last month as the next generation of the Windows Embedded CE platform. The OS can be used in embedded systems such as in set-top boxes and slates.

Makes me wonder if the Windows Embedded Compact 7 would be backwards compatible with our existing apps unlike Windows Phone 7. Very curious indeed.
Will be good if there is more to choose from than this overpriced Motorola from other manufacturers, HTC's Sedna is as old as the hills and is well overdue an upgrade
Good news. There is hope for us, who like the WinMo 6.5. Personally I won't buy a WP7 phone, because it follows the iPhone way: dumb phone with shiny features and strong compromissums.
But the Embedded line looks good.

Holy brown stuff, they consider our phone optimized for gingerbread!
Why do i need the following to get a reasonable performance:
- a different file system
- a different partitioning (tegrak)
- a tweaked kernel
- init scripts to turn things on/off that sammy forgot
The whole idea of updatable software running on fixed hardware is to be able to expand hardware lifetime and offer expandable functionality.
The least they could do is to offer the community proper access to all the code, source and/or usable binaries, needed to continue the development after they drop support.
SGS is a great phone, although it never did what was promised like gps or hdmi out.
As a programmer i am disgusted by the IT hardware industry. There is no relation between manufacturing costs and selling costs. And now we even seem to be forced to throw away functioning hardware with more computing power then we could imagine 20 years ago. And why do we have to polute this way?
Silly copyrights and unused patents.

300million devices sold 2011 a big part should be sgs can't they give us some love? I hope they will leak ICS roms anyway like they are doing with gb now. and since nexus s got it, they can't blame the hardware for being outdated.

Galaxy S optimized for gingerbread? Very sad to know Samsung is putting it that way. I guess it is a big disappointment for us 10 million+ Galaxy S users.
This surely keeps me away from buying Samsung Android handsets, or even any android handset for that matter. I begin to see how fragmentation is a problem in Android. My 3rd generation iPod Touch running iOS 5 with a 600 mhz processor and 256 MB of RAM is more stable and snappy than my Galaxy S with a 1200 mhz (OCed) processor and 512 MB of RAM. Funny thing is, it still gets software updates despite being almost a 3 year old product. The Galaxy S isn't even out for 2 years yet.
I think, the just don't see how they can port ics with tw3. Obviously, they can't do aosp either (being a Samsung device). Only option is to get a cm9 mod or custom rom.

The Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are both launching in multiple markets and word has got round from Nokia that the company's latest Windows Phone 8 hardware will be released in India by early 2013. According to multiple reports from consumers who have contacted Nokia's support channel, the company is planning to launch the Lumia 920 and 820 in the first week of January 2013, while the Lumia 620 will be hitting stores in the last week of the month.
Nokia's flagship, the Lumia 920 is the company's high-end Windows Phone 8 device, which sports a number of features to make the expensive price tag seem well worth the investment. Microsoft's new mobile platform is being pushed by not only the Finnish manufacturer, but also HTC and Samsung, with the latter finally bringing the ATIV S to market.

WP8 is an easy-to-use OS (much like IOS). Coming from Android (and that too, a custom ROM), it's taking some time to get used to the fact that not everything is customizable
For the Lumia 920, the hardware is absolutely top-notch. It feels big to hold in the hand and kinda heavy (I like). On the other hand, iPhone 5 is extremely light.
The battery lasted me for a full day with moderate use - 3G push (Gmail and Exchange), Clicking some photos (without flash), Browsing and Facebook. On Edge, for the same usage, it lasted me 1.5 days (charged it when it dropped to 20%). Would have gone on for another couple of hours though.
While playing games, the battery drops. Same is the observation if you have NFC enabled. So, I have only Location set to ON. NFC, WiFi and Bluetooth are OFF and are turned on only when required.
What I like the most about the phone is that it's blazing fast! Starting the camera from the lock screen (just press down on shutter button) takes only about 1 sec to start up cam.
More apps are needed though, the market is sorely lacking in variety. Most of the apps I use are there on the market place, but there is hardly any choice apart from the standard options.

Yes, folks, you read that right. There’s the original Galaxy Grand, the just announced Galaxy Grand 2, and in a couple of months, there will be another Galaxy Grand sandwiched in between, dubbed the Galaxy Grand Lite (GT-I9060), according to one of our insiders. The device will be showcased at the MWC in late February, and is*something of a cross Grand and Grand 2 – it will have a 5-inch WVGA screen, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage with microSD slot, and a 2,100mAh battery.
Where it differs is the camera and Android version. The camera is expected to be a 5-megapixel unit on the rear and a very standard VGA camera on the front; our insider says the phone will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean – that’s probably just temporary, and the final product should have at least Android 4.3 out of the box. Dual SIM support is pretty much a given as well, as the Galaxy Grand has been a success in markets where phones with two SIM slots are quite popular (such as India and China), though that’s something we can’t confirm at this point.

The Galaxy Grand Lite will be available in white, “Midnight Black”, “Lime Green”, and orange, from somewhere around the fifth week of 2014 (a couple of weeks before the MWC showcase). Why is Samsung making a Galaxy Grand Lite? Well, that’s a tough question to answer – it looks like the Korean company is taking things a step further when it comes to having multiple variants of their devices, this time extending the tradition to a device that comes somewhere in the lower mid-range spectrum of the market. It’s not a move that makes any sense to us, but hey, we aren’t making the decisions over at Samsung HQ.

Lol.....there was a time when NOKIA was at its highest peak. But in the course of time,it starting descending very poorly. You know why,because of their poor software. Symbian was good at initial stage but afterwards it couldn't stand firm in the growing android and ios competition. I had Nokia n8 and its OS was more than crap and slow. There was lack of development for it and most importantly less number of apps. In addition to these reosons there were also many flaws in It which lead SYMBIAN to its DEATH. While if we move to SAMSUNG,I don't think so same thing will happen with it. Because Samsung phones run ANDROID which is one of the best OSes in today's market. And hopefully it will grow more and more rapidly with the course of time. The prime reoson which can cause SAMSUNG to its death is its softare optimization. The Ui and physical condition. But Samsung Is keeping its place by doing well with its UI. Well let's hope for better for both
