This forum is confusing and when I tryed to root my nst with the TOUCHNOOTER,it came out buggy. What is the best way to root the nst on 1.1.2 and does tinynoot work with the nst 1.1.2?
Same question here. After I came home with it and tried to root it with TouchNooter, I made a brick out of it. Successfully unbricked it, but willing to be more carefull nexttime.
It would be nice to make a step by step guide how to root it, possibly with photos/video of these steps. I would like to root mine with support of the gApps, then install Launcher 7, and enable multitouch and NoRefresh. If anybody with time on his hands would do such guide for me, I would be very gratefull.
Tinynoot will work on the NST as well as the Glowworm.
BUT tinynoot does not support the Google app market - it is an extremely minimal approach intended only to get root and install a bare minimum of apps. One of the apps is the Amazon appstore, which may be enough for some folks.
If you want access to the full Google market or to gmail or google maps, you need to use one of the root methods that can make those happen. (Even Tasker was a big PITA to install on my tinynooted device because I had to go hunt down some supporting files that normally come from Google maps to get it to run.)

I successfully rooted it on 1.1.2. I used beta5-2XUFullTouch-PART-1-START and beta5-1 XWUMFTouch-PART-2-END. Opera Mini doesn't not work, but Opera Mobile does. Also Market Search function doesn't work, but you can use AppBrain, or SearchMarket application from Android market.

LOT of crashing and having to restart every 15 minutes.

I'm looking toward a Nook Touch because it looks to have better specs-wise than the forthcoming Kindle Touch (though Amazon has better backend/store support), but how stable is it if rooted? I'm intrigued about the possibility for using ezPDF, simple browser, etc. on a rooted Nook, but was concerned about any stability issues.

Once you get it rooted, it can be very stable. I've run ezpdf on mine before to read books for school on.
Once rooted, it is quite stable. Ezpdf and opera mini are the apps for your needs, and they are very responsive - they seem to be made for the nook
after rooting it just works the same as before. If anything can brake it, it's those modified frameworks and other jars so I keep myself away of that. So basically one can easily install and uninstall applications on rooted nook and that's it. I do not use market, so everything comes in apk which are rather clean after being uninstalled. With my approach to not modify framework or use gapps or market, the latest update of nook software provided by BN went really smooth and after reboot I had all my apps working - beside from those needing root access.
In my experience, stability is fine, but my root was apparently incomplete (did not have write access to some folders) and I decided to revert back to stock for now by doing the L+R factory reset. I wouldn't let that discourage you, but you must, must, must backup your N2E if you're gonna try rooting. You never know when it'd come in handy.

Does Dolphin Browser Mini work on rooted Nook, or is Opera the only 3rd party browser?

We have a list of working apps in this forum, under themes and apps in the main nook str menu.
Dolphin does work, but the address bar doesn't follow the link once you select it. But if you make a search in google and go to the link, or have the link in favorites, there is no problem.

Yes but all methods require that you root your NST.
And if you choose to root your device, be sure to make a backup FIRST!
And make sure your backup file is ~1.82GB .. if less then you did it wrong!
I cannot emphasize this enough, every week we see one or more totally bricked Nooks because people either failed to make a backup, or did it wrong, and when you total it, well, it cannot be fixed unless you return it to B&N, simple as that!

Leaves all of it there. Though if you wanted to, you could install another reader app.
I tried using ADB over wifi to push epubs and while they copy fine and appear in the Library app, the reader app can't access them. I asume because the file ownership is wrong? Aldiko opens them fine.
Any way to fix this?

You can use Calibre to wirelessly sync your books to your nook.
Need to have Calibre on your computer and on your Nook.
I use dropbox with dropsync. You csn have it check for changes and sync or manuakly sync. It works great!

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried Renate's adbsync tool but still have the same issue with the Nook's stock reader not being able to read the file. Wondering now if it's down to the particular root tool I used - loney's "UK 1.2.0 Glow ONLY TFU Software Upgrade"
I imagine Calibre would work fine but I'm happy with the stock reader for now and don't need to sync a lot of files - doing them manually with adb push isn't an issue.

What firmware version was on your nook before you rooted?
loney's rooting tool is for UK Nook's with fw 1.2
if you have a US Nook glow or non-glow with fw 1.2 then root with Tinynoot.
if you have a US Nook glow with fw 1.1.5 then root with Glownooter

It's a UK nook that came with fw 1.2. Have now realised that after a reboot the stock Reader can access the files, will carry on investigating.
I rooted my nook today and no matter what I try, using Opera Mini, I cannot get any google apps to install. I also cant figure out how to add a device to google apps. Since the Market app never works for anyone this seems to be the only way to install anything but there are no forums mentioning how to install it. I would appreciate some assistance. Thanks.

Depending on the rooting method you used, there is way to install gapps, which includes market (google play - they are compatible in use, nothing being left). Check it on the proper post here in the development forum!

How can you get APKs out of Google Play without loading your personal device with a load of junk from Google?
I've got Google Maps on my Nook right now and every time I turn my back it's trying to do something (when not running).

Gotta live with that. That's the price of having market (gmail always on the background, etc), but it helps the system runs a little bit better (apps upgrade!).

Look on the thread related to touchnooter, and probably there will be an option to add gapps to your system. Usually the 1st post show you all the options.
Have the same problem - is there a way to install market only?
What I'm going to do is install on my phone, extract it from the phone, then load onto the Nook and delete what's left over! Madness, I know.
A nicer way for me would be to install into a virtual machine and do that. Anyone know if that's possible? Possibly even with Android-x86??
I don't like market in this sense. It's a problem with all Android devices as far as I can see. Market is a bit of a problem in this regard.
I'm not sure about the problem here, but, I can confirm that, I rooted my NST with Touchnooter and market is working fine, I downloaded several apps from market and, I also installed some apps trough Google Play Store from my PC directly to the NST.
For me Market search didn't work after following MinimalTouch so I had to use the SearchMarket app from Appbrain. After this now I can search and install anything but still can't click the notifcations, OperaMini crashes back to the ADW desktop, same for Browser too after clicking a link in Google.

for Renate re: Maps out of control. Yes, I noticed too that it comes out of the background and wastes battery. 2 ideas: 1) Freeze it when not in use. You can use a Widget from Titanium or AppQuarantine for quicker launch 2) use something 3rd party
I also suggest using a different account for the Nook to any other Android devices you have to keep things separate and clear since the NST is not recognised by Play.
For a bare-bones root with an appstore, tinynoot ought to work.
I cobbled it together for the glowlight but all the parts are from the established NST environment - clockwork, su, busybox, adw, button savior, nook touch and nook color tools.
I include the Amazon appstore, which of course is also an app that likes to be always on, but none of the gapps because the framework for the glowlight stuff hasn't been looked at yet.
The install scripts are based on minimal nooter, which is CWR based file and directory creation.
I didn't include a modded uRamdisk because I find that adb wireless is enough on its own to let me use wifi adb (dont' recall if I've used usb ADB but I suspect it would work, in assocation with nook color tools) - I can shell in via ADB and just need to type su to get superuser.

You could format and use one of my minimal zips instead of the full ones, they had only the neccesary apps and libs for Gmail (manual sync) and "Market" to work correctly, nothing more, nothing less, no maps, etc.
Now everything is a bit outdated, as I said, I'll work on this again and update the zips etc.
I have a nook simple touch, with I rooted with Nooter from nookdevs.
I have two issues: First, when I try to download Dropbox from the Amazon app store, I get an error saying it could not parse the package. Is there either a fix for this, a way to get Android Marketplace to work, or another way to side load the Kindle app besides Dropbox?
Also, I can't figure out what button to use to get back to the main app screen-if I get to anywhere without a back button...I have to reboot. Just me being a noob, but I honestly spent almost an hour trying to figure this out.
Anyone help a noob out?

Can you post a link to the guide you followed? My memory is that the nookdevs rooting guide gets you as far as booting from noogie which lets you manually place files into /system and /data, but if you have the appstore installed, it sounds like you've gotten a little past that.
You want to have nook color tools, IIRC, or similar installed, so that you can enable the installation of "unsigned apps," that ought to let your apps from the appstore finish installing. For that change to take, you'll need the su binary installed and a few other things.
Touchnooter lets you have the android market on a nook touch; glownooter does so on a glowworm, and there are guides here to nooter that uses clockwork to root an NST with the touchnooter-style of root.
If you just need / want the amazon market running, you can use tinynoot - for Android market to work, more of the OS needs to be changed than for the Amazon appstore, but IIRC you do still need to enable unsigned apps.
Android market spontaneously started working, but I would still like the ability to sideload apps. I can't post links-I am new here-It appears to be called TouchNooter.

I have only used two of above for 4 x NST not a NSTG so far.
Now I've literally got two NSTG arrived today waiting at home for me to play with (Just been reduced to £49 in UK so I expect a lot more visitors to this forum asking such questions).
If your new to Nook simple touch devices then please be aware of firmwares. A lot of older more mature stuff for NST relies on the v1.1 firmware base. All new NST and NSTG in UK and other places will already be on v1.2 from factory.
NookManager is newer and supports v2. It has a backup feature. Before anything else boot off it. Backup your NSTG. Connect usb cable to PC while using Nookmanager and copy the backup to a PC.
I would also use Noogie and make another backup a different way.
That way if you screw anything up and or don't like root method you can go back.
Before rooting I strongly recommend registering your stock nook and if your going to stick with version 2 update to latest one following instructions on B&N website.
Touchnooter is a lot older and I tend to use that when I am using a v1 base (you lose some features but can gain a very quick lag free multitouch norefresh NST).
I have never used glownooter. Obviously it sounds more NSTG specific which is a good thing.
Personally I don't know how much the NST and NSTG differ internally. Certainly if you start messing around with different kernels make sure they support NSTG or you may lose the glow ability.
I will be trying the NookManager route first. Highly recommend coolreader app as alternative to BnN reader.
I'll let you know how it goes with mine. I will be using it stock for little while first though.
Oh the kindle app did not work that great when I tried it. If you really want kindle that much is it worth buying one..... Certainly if its not up to your standard then use your backup return nook to stock. Only then de-register device and return it.
If running v2 firmware then rather than norefresh (works best on v1) you would be after fastmode. I would not recommend that for reading ebooks. Scrolling PDFs maybe.

You can use winimage mention in above guide to stick Nookmanager on a sdcard too.
When booting off Nookmanager say no to wifi, Rescue->Backup, Use rest of space on SD card, create backup.
Obviously make sure your device is well charged and choose a big enough sd card to hold the backup. Its about 300MB compressed. As the backup is stored on a second partiton on the sd card windows won't easily be able to access it. To copy to PC once complete plug a usb cable in while running nookmanager and it will appear as mass storage device. Some of my nook's usb cables were charge only ones (very handy) so if cable is thin and long use a different cable.
Also for others reading the NSTG also comes with the most compact usb charger I've ever seen. Its actually smaller than my samsung one. NST comes with no charger.

The device got rooted but the market app doesn't work properly in order to download the opera browser (the other one doesn't work either), and the amazon app store keeps telling me: "Please enter a valid email and password" and doesn't let me log in with the same credentials that I use to log in from my pc. The opera app isn't even listed among the handful of apps listed on the Market app. What can the problem be? How can it be fixed? If I can't properly use this old nook model as an e-ink android I will have to return it. The only reason I purchased it was to root it.
If anyone know the fix please explain it to me in simple terms as I am not a great tech savvy.

You should definitely return to stock firmware and update to 1.2.1 before anything else. Then, you can re-root and enjoy.
Restoring to stock and re-rooting can be done with the NookManager rooting tool. Updating your software version can be done by following the instructions at B&N.
