W8 Metro Apps doesn't open - Windows 8 General

I have recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 8 and have had lots of problems since that. Firstly I can't download/install lang packs. My laptop is from germany and I don't know how but when I upgraded to W8 it automatically changed to German and it doesn't give me an option to download/install any other language. [Solved]
Secondly, I can't open any apps. When I click on one, it loads a screen saying "App Preview" and then comes back to the Start metro interface. How do I at least fix that?

A friend of mine had exactly the same problem.
Finally, it ended up with a clean install of Windows 8.

It may sound crazy, but Metro apps need hardware acceleration. Install the latest Windows7 driver for you video card.

Most of the integrated drivers have hardware acceleration. I get this problem every so often, just keep opening it till it stays open.

I have installed the latest Windows 8 CP AMD driver for the HD6000M series and still no-go. What else can I do that doesn't involve reinstalling the system. I can't lose my documents, photos etc...
I have solved the language pack thing at least.

Did you install it from ATI's page ? The one in the windows repository doesn't work very well.

I had installed the Consumer Preview before and now I have installed this one:
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Windows8ConsumerPreviewDrivers.aspx
It's still not working.

I personally hate, hate windows 8!
But then again you can call me a apple fanboy

thanks for that insightful post mate, moving along....
ive had issues with apps not opening, but as already mentioned trying a couple more times usually works. Im not convinced about sticking with the upgrade, if you have the space id suggest a fresh install WITHOUT deleting the partitions, the install wizard will copy all your old windows folders to a new folder called Windows.old.
You can then work through it coping all your files to the new OS and delete it when your happy.
everything you need will likely be in windows.old\users\username\
another good place to hunt about is windows.old\programData\
before you try all that, this is going to sound stupid but have you tried turning off your computer?,
yesterday Windows had updated some files in the background (WMC) my Mail App was refusing to sync with no errors at all, when I shut down the computer it came up that it was installing updates so I turned off the PC at the wall for a few min and when it rebooted it worked perfectly...

it's a common problem if you upgrade to win8.
Solutions:
1.) Do a clean install (no upgrade from win7 or other win8 beta)
2.) Fix it.
Save the below to a .reg file, execute it and restart your machine.
Code:

I have tried the regedit fix but that didn't work either.
I think it's a problem with the videocard driver, as when I upgraded, I couldn't open CCC anymore.
I'm trying to uninstall the driver to reinstall but I am facing some problems right now, the driver won't remove completely it appears and it won't let me update to the recent one.

Hey guys,
I have tried multiple clean installs of win8 (RP) because repeatedly the metro apps stopped opening after working fine initially. I was able to nail the problem down to kasperky internet security. I tried webroot internet security and things are working great.
Try it and trust me, it will work.

I don't think that is my issue here as I don't use any anti virus software other than MS Security Essentials.

Same issue here... Cut the rope and Weather will not work. Rest of apps do work. They all worked on Consumer preview... i did the upgrade to RC from there. I'm going to fresh install it next, but i was hoping i could work it out 1st.

It seems I managed to get the graphics card driver to work, CCC is now opening but still I can't get the apps to load. What now?

It's a common problem. I have trouble opening my apps too on multiple tries. It's not your display driver. Just keep opening the same app and eventually it will open.

download latest windows 8 developer preview it will work

No, it won't. The fix is the change to the Registry.
Microsoft themselves have no clue about the issue - they'll tell you it's a graphics driver problem, but that's wrong.
If the first Registry fix doesn't work, try this one in addition to the first:
(it might break your installation!)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]

Try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695265
-Open Charms Bar (Windows key + C)
-Select Settings ---> Change PC settings
-Open Ease of Accsess
-Turn off ----> Tab through webpages and app using care browsing
Now you can add gmail and much else that did not work.

None of the suggestions above seemed to work
I think I'll give up.

Most Metro Apps crashing

Hi all!
I have installed a Windows 8 Pro on a Desktop PC (W8, 64bit at E8400 with 8GB RAM on Samsung SSD Serie 830).
After that, I logged in with my Windows Live Account. I start setting up the Mail App, with a few imap Accounts and an Exchange 2010 SP2U6 Account. I have installed ATI Radeon Drivers 12.8 for my Serie 5xxx graphiccard and the win7 Drivers (there are no w8 Drivers) for my Soundblaster X-fi Titanium.
Than I noticed problems, while using Metro apps. Some are working a few clicks, like mail, calender, contacts, before they crash, some apps crashing directly after starting them (apps loaded by store are crashing, too. Some apps are working fine.)
I tried a W8 refresh. After refresh I thought this will work now, cause for a few minutes, the apps worked, than they start crashing again.
After that, I installed W8 Enterprise on a DELL XT2 with Touchscreen. After Installation, I logged in with my Live-Account.
Most informations got synced, like mailboxaccounts, and other settings. Now, what happend, after working with the Metro apps? They crashed! Same Problem at the other PC System, with a fresh Installation of another w8 Version.
Both Images are official from my MSDN account and not cracked or modified.
I got the following Event entrys (example for mail app Crash, every appcrash Event looks same...my win8 is german, so the logs are in german, too...sorry):

Can somebody help me?
Thank you.
I read about a problem with the MS Live Account. It seems, the problem is cause of a bug inside that account. This would explain, why I get this error on both pc´s (thought about it before). The problem is.....how can I fix this, without changing to an local account? It seems, Microsoft has to fix it. Until that, W8 is useless for me.
That´s really a bad start for W8 and me
Anyone else got this problems?
Go I to ease of access. Look for something about tabs, shut it off. It causes issues in preview. It was left on in the preview but is off in the RTM.

This bug isn't in the RTM but is in the consumer preview and release preview
Shut off any ease of access. The culprit for me was one that had something to do with tabs. The RTM trial i am running now doesn't have it but the consumer and release preview i used previously did.
Hope that helps!
Sorry, didn´t help, this are all RTM...there are no Consumer Previews from Professional or Enterprise...
I still have this problems, and many others, too...
There is no chance to solve that at the moment, Windows 8 is useless for me
Try to Update Your Video Card if your Manufacturer does not have a driver for the windows 8 Try not to update your VGA When you perform Refresh or reinstall
Thanks for the offer, but again...I can use different PC´s with Windows 8...can just use yours once and will get the problem, it´s not a local problem. With my own PC, I use the amd drivers 12.8 since beginning, the other is a Intel GMA Card, so I use standard Win7 drivers for this...I can setup more and more pc´s, it´s possible, cause I have a big infrastructur, but the problem is reproduciable on every system whit my MS Live Account.
Maybe a problem with SAN Certificats at the Exchange Server, or a problem with the Exchange Mailbox Rules, to protect the PC, or maybe a problem, cause using a MS Live ID with own login address and using this address with another IMAp Account...but it´s definitely a problem with the MS Live Account.
I can´t and don´t wanne change this account, cause with this account I have some WP7 purchase, many configs, Microsoft VLS, MSDN Technet....
I think it´s just buggy and needs to be fixed by Microsoft
Do you have the machine joined to a domain? Lots of problems with group policy settings. There is a thread on Microsoft forums about the issue and solutions.

Not sure if this is related to your issues but I recently caused all my Metro apps by adding sharing permissions to my entire C: drive. Apparently a dumb thing to do since adding sharing to the hidden folder "Application data" will break all Metro apps from working. And I thought the solution would be as simple as un-sharing that folder but apparently not.
I've bought Windows 8 Pro 64Bit today, upgraded my Win7 with it and got the same Problem....Apps are crashing immediately after clicking on them.
Same here... even MS apps crash. Updated from 7 Pro to 8 pro two days ago and this is really bad. Looks like a semi-finished product...
A bit late maybe, but try (as test) to use the standard Microsofts Display adapter.
(Control Panel > Device Manager > Display adapters.)
My metro apps started crashing as soon as I updated my (intel) video card's driver.
When I changed back to the "default" video driver all was okay again.
Are any of you guys using AVAST Anti Virus?? I had the same problem with apps crashing after clicking on them until I updated to the newest version of Avast and everything started working properly.
Anyone find out why this happens? And how do I fix it? I do no have any antivirus installed. I am unable to download apps from the store. It says not connected to internet. Its driving me crazy.

i have the same problem.... i can't log in anymore with my MS account :crying:
Okay I see a lot of people complaining that metro apps are not working. Here is what you should do:
1)First of all ,check your screen res.Apps need a minimum resolution of 1024 x 728 to work.
2)Download the latest updates for your video drivers
3)Uninstall avast antivirus.Use windows defender instead.
4)Check the apps reviews whether the app works for others.
5)Do a detailed Search on google

It is as i said, the first time i was able to sing in with MS account and after a few days i made a recovery (because i changed "owners permission") but without erasing my files and now i can't log in anymore...
The metro apps crashed and i can't see anything online
I searched a lot (i used fix from MS with account sync and windows app store) i followed all the steps but it's the same.... i was thinking to make a fresh installation without my files and deleting pc permisson on MS profile.... maybe it will work...

First I would try and create another user account. Then log in with that one and see if it works. That will tell you if Windows 8 itself is hosed up.

[Q] There's a problem with PC settings. Should I refresh my PC?

I upgraded my Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 (read: not a clean install) a few nights ago. Everything worked great, until recently. I changed the setting in PC settings to make everything appear larger. Now when I choose "Change PC settings" from the settings charm, I get the message: "This app can't open. There's a problem with PC settings. Refreshing your PC might help fix it."
Everything else seems to be working fine, but I am now stuck with a huge interface and no way to get into the PC settings. I have tried all of the obvious things (searching google/xda, restarting the PC, power off and on, etc.) As I understand it, performing a refresh will keep my Windows 8 apps, but will wipe out all my desktop programs. Am I correct in this? I really would like to avoid this, as I have a lot of programs installed, some of which I have lost the discs/installers for. What do you guys think?
EDIT: Now that I think about it, this also means I don't have access to many other important items such as Windows Update and user accounts.

Correct me if I am wrong but if you can get to the modurn settings to do a refresh then you should be able to do an advanced boot. I thnk there is a repaire install there that will not wipe out your programs. That said if you find something as wimple as setting to make things bigger has done this there could be a host of bugs but it may be worth trying to find the registry entry for this and changing it back to see if it fixes the problem. Not sure where it is but google is good here - always backup the registry before making changes.

Windows 8 FAQ:-Want to ask a question?Check here first!

The Windows 8 FAQ
In order to declutter the windows 8 general thread with unnecessary questions,I decided to create this FAQ.I have answered most of the common questions here and will be adding more and more answers as time goes by.If you want me to cover a question, just post it in this thread and ill answer them as soon as possible....
Q1.What Is A Clean Install? What's the difference between a clean install and an upgrade?
A1.A clean install means deleting the previous operating system completely, then replacing it with windows 8.You do this by booting from the cd and then installing windows 8.This is almost always the best way to install windows 8.
Q2.I copied the Iso file to my cd and burnt it,but its not booting from the cd.Why?
A2.This is because burning an ISO is not as simple as just copying the iso to the cd.You need software like IMGBurn or Free ISO Burner. After you download that, when you right click the ISO,you should get and option to burn to disk.Insert a BLANK dvd AND Burn away!
Q3.My Windows 8 Installation failed/froze/crashed!What do I do?
A3.The First thing to do if windows 8 doesn't install is to try again.Yes,try again. If it still doesn't work then try the following troubleshooting:
1)If you are trying an upgrade, forget it,take a backup of your data and do a clean install.
2)Unplug all unnecessary hardware like microphones, speakers, headphones etc
3)Check if all the setup files are proper and not corrupted
4)Check the serial key.
Q4.What is a Microsoft account? Is it necessary to create one?
A4.You do not need to create a Microsoft account to use your computer,as Microsoft allows you to use your computer with a local account. However you will not be able to sync your settings across devices, use the windows store and use Microsoft services like xbox live.
Q5.What Is Windows activation? Is it necessary?
A5.Windows activation is a way by which Microsoft prevent windows piracy. It checks whether your copy of windows is genuine or not.Windows activation is necessary within 30 days.
Q6.The Personalize option is greyed out. Why?
A6.The Personalization option is greyed out when your copy of windows 8 is activated illegally or not activated at all.
Q7.There are only 100 apps in the windows store. Why?
A7.There are only 100 apps available to the users of the preview versions of windows.
Q8.Metro apps are force closing or not opening at all. Why?
A8.This is most likely due to a low screen resolution.Metro apps need a minimum screen res of 1024 to work.
Q9.My C Drive is filling up.How do I free up the c drive to install more metro apps?
A9.You can use software like easeus partition master to remove space from your d and e drive and add it to your c drive.Post below for a complete guide.
Q10.Where are Metro apps installed?
A10.Metro apps are installed in a folder called windowsapps in the c program fies folder. It is a hidden folder.
Q11.How do I access the windowsapps folder?
A11.You will need to enable show hidden folders in folder options. Then navigate to the folder and change permissions from trustedinstaller to urself. Now u will be able to access windowsapps folder
Q12.How do I Rename Non metro tiles?
A12.Right click on the tile and click on open file location.Rename the original file and the tile should follow suit.
Q13.How Do I Delete Preinstalled Metro Apps?
A13.You will need to gain access to the windowsapps folder and then delete the app folder from there.
Q14.Im getting an error continuously when I try to get a developer license. Why?
A14.This is due to your copy of windows being activated illegally.
Q15.How do I sideload Metro apps?
A15.For this you need a developer license. To get one,Open the windows powershell as administrator and type:-Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration.Then follow the wizard to get a license.
Q16.How Do I Get Back The Start Menu?
A16.This can be done in several ways. There are lots of software available solely for this purpose like stardock start8,Vistart,Startisback and pokki.Ill list the pokki method here since its free..Download the software Pokki. It is free and it gives back the start menu in all its goodness.Once you download click the acorn icon in the desktop and enable the show start menu option.
Q17.Is there a way to boot directly to desktop?
A17.This too can be done with pokki.Enable the boot to desktop option and youre done!
Q18.What are the minimum hardware requirements to run windows 8?
A18.Microsoft has confirmed that windows 8 will run on the same hardware that runs windows 7.In other words,if windows 7 works, windows 8 will too!
To be more specific, here are the minimum hardware requirements:
•1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
•1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
•16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
•DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Q19.How do I close a metro app?
A19.You do this by either pressing alt+f4 or dragging the app from the top to the bottom of the screen. You can also close an app by going to another app, hovering your mouse on the left side of the screen and then selecting the application and clicking close.
Q20.Do I need To close a metro app?
A20.Microsoft employs a system which automatically suspends applications when you click on the windows key and resumes them when you restart the app.In theory, this should allow you to open a lot of modern apps without closing any of them.
Q21.What is the Charms bar? How do I access it?
A21.The Charms bar is an attempt by Microsoft to put the most frequently used functions of the pc in one place. You can access the charms bar by hovering your mouse at the top right or bottom right corner of the screen.
Q22.How do I turn off my pc?
A22.You do this by going to the charms bar, clicking on power>shut down.
Q23.How do I switch between apps?
A23.Hover your mouse on the top left or bottom left of the screen to bring up the quick switch panel.Click on the app you want to switch to and youre done! You can also switch between an app and the start screen by clicking the windows key.
Q24.What is snap/crop view?
Windows 8 allows you to enjoy your applications in three ways.Snap, cropped and fullscreen.Fullscreen is when an app occupies the entire screen.Snap is when an app occupies about 1/4th of the screen and cropped is when an app occupies 3/4th of the screen.
Q25.How do I access snap/cropped view?

on tablet tapping the screen in a location is simply a mouse left click (unless the software specifically supports touch) and then pressing and holding for a brief period of time is a right click. This is actually a step backwards as on windows 7 you could do a much faster right click by pressing 1 finger down and then immediately tapping next to it with another finger.
With a wacom stylus, they are actually detected slightly above the screen. This I think allows you to move the cursor around without having to click in that location as you would on a regular touchscreen. Tapping with the stylus is then left click. Some styluses have either a button you hold as you tap or the ability to tap with the back of the pen as a right click. Hovering the stylus over the screen to move the cursor around also allows you to trigger rollover textboxes on websites or tooltips I think. Not 100% sure having had only limited time with a stylus equipped tablet.
Alternately. There isnt a single windows tablet out there that doesn't have USB and bluetooth capabilities. So you could use a USB mouse or a bluetooth mouse.

for daily usage wait for 8.1 to be available via windows update. The public versions right now are slightly buggy betas for developer usage, not public usage, its a fresh install not an upgrade. It will be available for free as a system update later this year

OK I am taking up the offer:
Qn. Is Windows activation done automatically or do I have to go to control panel or somewhere to do the activation?
Qn+1. My Personalize option is not greyed out, does that mean my Windows activation has been done automatically? I don't remember doing any kind of activation since I got the new PC.
Thank you for the great list of Q&A.

Yes, after release on 18, you can upgrade without losing files and apps. If you have the Preview you can upgrade to 8.1 but only keep personal files.

[Q] Best PC Decrapifier?

What is the best PC Decrapifier? Something like Ccleaner, but better?
You already named it, at least for registry decrapifying.
In my opinion though the best decrapifier is not crapifying in the first place.
Or learning to do it manually. I've never met one such tool that I trusted, or that I was confident did enough good to be worth the risk of harming the system.

Yep
1) go to control panel>programs and features>uninstall a program
2) find the stuff you want to remove>uninstall, follow on screen instructions.
for trash files:
Right click partition>properties>general tab>disk clean up>use it to delete everything you want.
After you;ve done these
right click the partition from which you deleted the files>properties>tools>defrag/optimize and defrag the disk.
Do this every 1-2 months and you shall have a happy relationship with your PC.
There is also a good thing to keep all stuff downloaded from the internet in the downloads folder until you can make sure you actually need it, so you can delete it all at once.
There is really no magic stuff the "cleaner programs" do. And windows does it better than they do. So why not use the tools you have at your disposal?
as 6677 said, it is better to avoid getting craptose in the first place. Just be careful what you download and you shall be fine.

Certainly one should keep the list of installed programs as minimal as is possible, but over time Windows builds up problems in the registry and elsewhere that simply slow down the system. In fact, uninstalling programs often leads to the registry values not being uninstalled as well, because of poor uninstallers by the programmers. Even if the values are uninstalled, that produces gaps in the registry unless it is compacted as well. That sort of thing simply isn't efficiently handled except by a program designed for the purpose. So one can improve the system by uninstalling - but the little stuff keeps building up.
Defragmenting the hard drive also helps, and should be done periodically.
It is a poor design by Microsoft. One simple solution is to simply reformat and reinstall windows every few years, thus clearing out the registry and all Windows problems. But that can be a hassle to reinstall and re-download all the updates.
My home XP machine, at about 10 years, is the longest I've ever maintained any Windows installation without reformatting. It boots a bit slowly, but once it is up and operational it is still usable. Before I ran system mechanic (and still use it periodically) it simply could not be used. I didn't reformat the machine because it has programs (mostly games) that my son still likes, and I don't have the disks and/or install codes for them any more.
I would suggest a reformat / complete reinstall as the best possible solution.

CCleaner clears out the old registry keys in theory, otherwise one can do it manually as GoodDayToDie suggested.
Windows actually defrags as you go along now, you will generally find that manual defragging is entirely unecessary. Although if you do want to do it as piece of mind it at least wont take long (my desktop I upgraded to windows 8 on release and has still only just reached 0.1% fragmented).

It is rather difficult to clean out registry values that have no clear naming convention, just a random string of hex codes - not all programs are logical in the directory entries. So manual cleaning has never seemed that good to me.
I'm presuming that the OP is not using windows 8, which really hasn't had time to get cluttered yet. For those older windows xp and win 7 installations, I have found System Mechanic Pro to be the best program, since it has programs for optimizing as well as cleaning out. I haven't yet installed it on any of my Windows 8 machines (no need yet so far as I can tell).
I've not heard of windows automatically defragmenting the disk, do you have a link?
EDIT: Nevermind, I just checked my Windows 8 and I see that microsoft has set up the defrag to run periodically. I'm not sure this was enabled in Win 7, but I had diskeeper on that installation so I would not have noticed.

I'm using an HP ENVY 17 w/ 4th gen intel i7 (Running 8.1)
It just feels slower, than my win 7 platforms.
It's a refurb, It was on sale from staples for 50% off. This thing: http://www.staples.com/HP-ENVY-Touc...rbished-Laptop/product_12329?cmArea=home_box1
It just feels slow... Yes I got rid of bloat, yes I keep a good eye on installed apps. Yes I have anti viruses, there are no viruses.
If you're talking about pre installed crap that comes on every pre-built system, you've got to do it manually.
If you're talking about toolbars and trial ware and junk ware and ilk, I use a combination of ADW Cleaner, Ccleaner, Combofix and Super Anti Spyware. Gets the job done. Some stuff is still manual, though.
The only legitimate excuse for an OEM-installed OS image is to boot the thing up so you're sure you don't have a lemon. You can copy the "drivers" folder (which can come under a variety of silly names) off the machine if you want to, but they're all online anyhow and often the online ones are more up-to-date. Make sure you have the license keys for any installed software that comes with the machine (the OS license key, and the Office one if relevant, are typically on stickers somewhere on the machine, though they can be elsewhere).
Once you've completed the initial bootup, shut the machine down, boot off of a DVD or flashdrive or external HDD or netboot or however you want to do it, and wipe the disk. The Windows installer, in "custom" (clean install) mode can do this. Delete all of the partitions, and either re-create them in less-stupid layout, or just let Windows create a sane partition layout for you by telling the installer to install Windows on the now-empty system drive. Once the system is set up, you'll need to install updates and software you actually want to use, but you'd probably have to do all of that anyhow. Drivers should get pulled down automatically, and for those that aren't, it should be trivial to retrieve them (the obvious exception would be if you somehow don't have working network drivers, in which case grab them off the web on another PC and transfer via USB).
Those OEM system images are pure garbage. In my experience, the first bootup of such a thing can sometimes take longer than the entire OS re-installation, including *its* first bootup! A clean install will run faster, more securely, and more stably; you will have far more resources available including disk space and RAM; you can be sure there are no unexpected programs lurking in the background to "optimize your customer experience" or similar BS. Since you already have the license keys, it won't cost you anything. Best of all, those OEM turds masquerading as software (Norton anything, WildTangent, etc.) will be gone, far faster *and* more cleanly than if you'd tried removing them without taking the nuclear option. It's the only way to be sure.

Wait... So in theory If I can find a legit version of Windows 8.1 (some RTM or straight from Microsoft) I can just reinstall it, and use my current serial? I don't have very much installed so I there's nothing really i'd need to back up, other than some Touchscreen drivers.
Yep. That serial may not work on any *other* computer (or it might; I don't know how restrictive OEM licenses are on 8.x) but it should work (again) on that one.
Worth A try.

It won't even work on my mine getting an error message:
(Same thing happens w/ 8.1)
Seriously?? Wow, lame. I've been doing that for years. I guess they don't allow the use of OEM licenses with retail copies at all anymore, even on the same hardware. I'm sure you could get them to activate it if you called them, but that's a bloody pain to need to do...
It's possible that the .WIM file (Windows IMage) in the recovery partition is a clean installer without the OEM crap (I'd be surprised, but not shocked; they could have it run a script to crapify the installation after re-installing) in which case you *should* be able to use that, but... meh. That's less convenient, for sure.

Just go through the computer and remove the junk programs. The control panel will allow you to uninstall them. If you haven't done it yet, I'd install classic shell (or similar) to get your start menu back.
You can also use msconfig (type the WIN + R and type in the command) to remove startup programs from running.
I'm sorry, I thought you were dealing with an older machine, that is why I suggested system mechanic. A new machine can be easily cleaned up manually.

Windows 10 Experience

So now that people are upgrading to the release of Win 10, I'm curious about your experience.
For me, it's a smooth OS with a lot of things I need to get used to but I have made some discoveries.
The task bar - on my main monitor won't auto hide. A search tells me this has been a bug for the last few technical releases. Oddly enough, all of a sudden, a few minutes ago, it started to work but I assume this will stop in the next reboot.
The Mail App totally sucks. No number of new emails in each account when you click on accounts. No view for all accounts. No using mouse/shift to select multiple messages. No Check boxes to select all messages in any folder. New incoming messages show up in the action center, only, but you have to open it to see them. Not getting desktop notifications.
Cortana looks like it could be good but setup has been a pain since for some reason my Microsoft LifeCam Cinema HD cam can barely hear my voice, even with level up all the way.
Camera App - totally doesn't open at all. I had to d/l a third party app which I don't like.
Settings page is tough to find things like Advanced Settings. That's WAS, oddly, in System/About but now it;s gone and replaced by other shortcuts. so setting the paging file size manually, etc is just gone for now.
Edge is the best browser yet by MS, but it's not going to get me to stop using Chrome
What are everyone else's thoughts so far?
It's nearly perfect. Drivers catched up, not a single incompatible program, major performance boost in games after installing the latest Nvidia driver. The only bug I've seen so far - Action Center's tray icon is lit on on system startup even though it's empty.
I'm recommending it to everyone I know, I've already installed it on 3 PCs I have access to. It's just 10/10.
Upgrade??
First, so far I like Windows 10 a whole lot better than Windows 8.1, but the upgrade has been a nightmare.
The upgrade on my AlienWare (Dell) laptop went smooth. No problems at all. The upgrade for my Surface Pro 3 (Microsoft) has been anything but smooth. Microsoft's own computer did not upgrade right. First, it installed Windows 10 Home even though the Windows 8.1 that was on it was the Pro version. It also wiped out all of my installed programs and apps. I didn't lose any data but the applications will all have to be reinstalled.
Mine won't even install on my Asus Transformer. Says Key cannot be verified....
If you are still having problems and difficulties upgrading your PC to windows 10, kindly follow this post on my website. A few clean up steps got my Dell system to upgrade to Windows 10 http://www.selftechgenius.com/how-to-geek-2/how-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-for-free/
OK, so here's a big one. I use my 500GB D:\ drive to store documents, downloads, pictures and videos by default. I tried to save a picture off the web to the pictures folder and got access denied error.
So I looked properties, security and noticed 2 things. 1, the folder was marked as read only and 2, there was and Unknown User account. I deleted that account, and changed the properties on both C: and D: drives and that fixed it but you should all go check to see if you have the same thing.
I'm thinking I'm going to get a 1 TB HDD backup to put all my personal things on, format both drives, then do a clean install. I've always hated doing OS upgrades on top of older releases and the few bugs I have, like the camera app not working or the VIA HD Deck app not opening are the reason why. I just have to wait for all my hardware devices to release Win 10 drivers
I wasn't a fan of Windows 10. Immediately after "upgrading" the track pad on my laptop didn't work properly anymore. Based on my research it's a driver issue with no solution until the driver is updated. Who knows when that will be.... I use my laptop a lot for school and can't afford to wait.
Microsoft also removed basic tools like paint with no good replacements in the app store. I also didn't like how it pretty much turned my laptop into a phone by calling the Control Panel "settings" and having an app store and stupid stuff like that. I went back to Windows 7 after less than an hour on Windows 10 and couldn't be happier.
I did like the UI, though. It kinda reminded me of the material design of Android 5.x with the flat colors and stuff.
I am very happy with win 10, got it on my Desktop and my Tablet and even though i had some touchscreen issues in the beginning it works well now on both devices
I did a clean install on my laptop, as opposed to the update on my desktop, and it's better. Cortana works right, etc.
My ONLY beef is the mail app sucks
I upgraded my Lenovo to Windows 10 with the media creation tool but after a week or so decided to do a clean install to get rid of the terrible bloat(though most of it I removed when I got the laptop).
I downloaded the ISO and CLEARLY remember choosing 64bit Home Single Language. But after I diakpart the drive and reinstall the OS I realize that I have a 32 bit version installed.
And my 15GB limit of "high" speed broadband is exhausted and I CANNOT download a 4 gig file on a 512 Kbps connection.
I'm stuck till next month or till my friend gives me the 64 bit ISO.
But its completely my fault, so guys BEWARE, don't make stupid mistakes!!!!
But I like the OS(mostly). After disabling Microsoft's sneaky data collection and automatic updates its all good. Don't forget to disable live tiles cause they hog bandwidth too.
But boot speed is faster, performance is better and multiple desktops and snapping is great!
[Moto E 2nd Gen 3G running CyanogenMod 12.1]
I don't like Windows 10 at all. It sucks on Tablet(Touch) and PC/Laptop. With StartIsBack++ you can fix Win10 a bit for mouse/keyboard, but the UI is still cluttered and ugly as hell.
Really?? I don;t have that problem at all, especially when doing a clean install
My upgrade went well.. But afterwards it was a nightmare. It took my DAYS and about 14 reboots just to get it unfrozen long enough to open task manager with ctrl+alt+delete. Then, suddenly, after a reboot, it worked. It is now even faster than 8.1 (although I sometimes need to use task manager to speed it up). All of my programs and files work.. Except for cam studio which didn't work on 8.1 either. [emoji13]

I did a fresh install, I like it, just that there's no direct access to the computer from the start bar, I managed to pin 'this pc' to it, but It wasn't good enough.
I added the start menu back from Stardock Start10.
fresh w10pro install here on an hp elitebook. no issues at all.
On Acer fresh update, no problems
I updated my Toshiba Satellite to Windows 10 and it runs smooth. There's only an annoying thing. Sometimes when I turn on the PC and log in it says that Cortana and Start Menu aren't working, so I must have to turn off and to solve this problem temporarily I have to press Shift while it turns on. But some days after it happens again.
