New Zealand SGSiii owners thread - Galaxy S III General

Thought I would start a Kiwi thread.
Had one on pre order from Warehouse Stationary @ $949 but cancelled today as Noel Leeming are selling them @ $839.20. Marble White 16.gb. In theory it's a Vodafone device but there is no branding of any sort. Device is sim free. Manufactured in Vietnam. Still finding my way with it. First impressions all good. What has impressed me most so far is the Gps. Cold start, out of the box, indoors and 2-3 seconds 16/17 fixed sats!

Got mine from 2degrees today on contract with $0 up front. Very happy with it. Upgraded from a Galaxy Nexus. Wish I waited for the Pebble Blue but the launch promo ended today

I had the white on order with warehouse stationery but for the last 2 days they have said it is with the courier. Ended up cancelling and went elsewhere. Voda firmware but no branding on the phone. Enjoying it so far

Hi chaps! I was the first in NZ to get one at the Voda midnight release sale, loving it so far!
Cheap plug: Make sure to check out AndroidNZ.net for great locally produced content on Android and the S3.

Wasn't going to pick one up until I noticed the same $840 Noel Leeming deal. I think I might have got the last one in stock across the country - was walking out of the store empty handed until the retail assistant called us back saying that another guy that was meant to pick it up wasn't going to afterall
Oh, the phone itself... It will be the first Samsung smartphone, no actually first non-HTC smartphone I've used for more than a few weeks. Should be interesting to say the least - oh and TouchWiz isn't a hunk of junk, might stay stock for a little while

Yep, this iteration of TouchWiz is very usable, I'm not feeling any particular pressure to install an alternate launcher just not either.
Be interested to know your thoughts, in particular in comparison to the One X.

Currently writing a short piece on the comparison for TelecomTech, updated with everything I've learnt since the time I wrote the last one and 24 hours with the S3

First impressions on battery life are very good. I've not gone through a full charge discharge cycle yet and have been using it heavily last night and lightly this morning. Basically everything on except haptic feedback.

I sold my S2 for $550, paid $944 at jb's... now I'm waiting for more custom roms

30% left on first full discharge, 17.5 hours, just over 4 hours of display time so far
Idle time is very impressive or is that just me?
Where are the lockscreen options and how do I make the notification area accessible from the lockscreen?

From the standard lock screen you should be able to just swipe down as you would from the home screen to get into the notification bar.

Well after 4 days of ownership I am absolutely loving this phone, the battery life, the slickness of the included apps, and TW5. Samsung have ventured into a new territory which whilst not perfect TW5 includes enough tweaks and options to suggest that not only are listening to their consumers and adapting to suit but they have come up with a UI that imho offers a better experience than AOSP, I think they have actually added value to AOS and put an almost iOS-que polish over top

Got New S3
just got mine a few days ago from JB Hifi for $988 with 16gb micro sd
and just putting it through its paces installing apps and games
The GPS on the S3 is amazing compared to other s's a had a location within 8 seconds and i turn off all data and WiFi capabilities
the big games on s3 like GTA3 run smoothly (bringing back memories of playing this game on my Win ME PC)

what i normally do when a get a battery type device (phone, laptop, etc) is to charge it till it says 100% then discharge it fully to 0% then charge it up again. This will ensure you have a long battery capacity in the future

Got to agree that battery life, GPS, screen, sound etc are all great. The only thing I don't like is touchwiz so I have gone back to Go launcher, which by the way really flies on this.
Picked up a nice mercury clip on case today plus screen protector from the telecom shop. Must say both actually add to the look and feel of the phone rather than take away from it.
I've not rooted yet but but probably will by the weekend. I'm enjoying the stock Rom but am definitely looking forward to cm9 and aokp roms to see what this baby can really do
I'm not impressed with the 'sticky' horizontal scrolling which I believe is an ICS feature. Other than that everything's good.

Yes mine is.

Picked up a white 16GB on contract with Vodafone for free over the weekend, have a blue 16GB on order from Mobicity. Will pick up a 64GB micro SD next pay day
Very impressed with the screen, speed and battery life of the phone. After having my S2 for a year, I'm suprised at just what an upgrade the 3 is, can't say I was expecting a lot from it compared to what it gives.
A couple of things I've noticed; the battery doesn't charge to 100%, and stand-by seems to chew a lot more battery than actually using the phone.

New Droid Razr HD maxx

Just bought this after using the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for the past year. I gotta say I'm blown away by the Battery life. With the Nexus I'd get maybe 12-14 hours before getting warnings at 15%. With the Maxx I went for 2D 5H and 10M to get to 5% battery. That was with normal usage or maybe even a bit more than normal because it was new.
The screen is great and very clear and bright.
Initially the camera was a negative and I took a few pictures inside in the evening with kinda weak lighting. They were dark and rather poor. Course the Nexus pictures in the same conditions weren't much better. Well I thought I'd try an alternate camera software and found a Jelly Bean camera version on the market. I installed this software and took another picture in the same condition and the new picture was far nicer that the stock camera. It was faster, brighter, clearer and better in just about every way.
Smart actions is amazing. I messed with tasker and never could get it working reliably. With smart actions I setup my work location and told it to not ring when I was in meeting and it worked perfectly. Now when I'm in a meeting my phone automatically silences itself and automatically sends a txt reply saying I'm in a meeting. Awesome!
I really couldn't be happier. The few addons that Motorola has like the smart actions, and the widget with the clock and weather are both fantastic and enhancements over the alternatives I was using from the market.
This phone is also solid and feels amazing. I'm stuned that this phone isn't the rave of the internet. I played with the S3 and it is nice but really I think this phone beats it hands down. Maybe the S3 and the Nexus both looked slicker but other than that this phone is awesome in every other way!!

Awesome! I'm thinking to upgrade from my Galaxy Nexus also and I can't decide between the S3 and the Razr HD MAXX. I'm leaning towards the MAXX because of the build quality and the battery life. Have you noticed lag compared to the Galaxy Nexus? I expect some lag because the Razr doesn't have Jelly Bean yet. But would you say it's comparable to Galaxy Nexus running ICS?
Also, have you noticed improvement in LTE reception (if you're in an LTE area)?
Thanks!!
Low lighting is the bane of taking pictures. It's not the camera, it actually does well in dim areas... compared to iso3200 on a full frame sensor, but that might set you back $6,000+ in a real DSLR.
Control the lighting, use flash, photography 101.
I loved the looks of my galaxy nexus and loved that I could always have the latest software. But other than that there is nothing I'm missing from the razr hd maxx. I have not had any noticable lag. And thats running ICS with JB this phone will be even better. Sound quality on the phone calls is much better. The speaker is louder and better sound quality. Blue tooth in my care is better. With the Nexus I would get periods of really bad sound quality when talking on the phone with blue tooth. I harassed my car service people to the point where they reloaded my entire system with new software. I have a Infiniti G37. No change.... Since I've had the maxx my blue tooth is perfect and now I feel bad for chewing on the infinity people. I was certain the problem wasn't my phone since I'd reloaded the rom and all and I even had a warrentee replacement phone.
Honestly I can't think of anything I miss at this point and countless things I'm much happier about. This is the best phone I've ever had.
On LTE reception I'm not sure. I don't recall any issues at all. But most of the time I'm on wifi. But I've had issues on my nexus. From time to time lte would be looking ok but the network wouldn't be working. The signal would be gray and the only way to get it to work was to reboot the phone. That didn't happen often but did happen. In the early days the nexus had lots of lte / 3g issues but they seemed to get fixed.
The razr is still too new to me to have a really good ability to assess how it will be. This weekend as I'm not at work will give me more time to really tell.
My upgrade its tomorrow and I plan to order the HD Maxx from Amazon Wireless. I was just wondering if I'll have to take it to a VZW store to activate it. I've always ordered directly from Verizon in the past and could activate on my own. Wasn't sure if that would be the case going through someone else. Can anyone shed some light on that for me? I'll be replacing a Thunderbolt, so I think the sim is a different size on the Razr.

Not sure if you have to take it in. If you're upgrading from a phone that has the same SIM, I think you can just pop it in.
On a side note, even if Verizon says your upgrade is tomorrow, Amazon will let you do the upgrade now. You should be able to get the subsidized price through Amazon today. Try to get the order in today if you want :good:

I'd wait a day and go through VZW. If you have an issue later, at least you have the option of a replacement (CLN) down the road if they allow. Plus you can see the phone right there before giving them your money, make sure it's put together correctly, make sure the screen is good, etc...
Just my opine!

On the other side, it's nice ordering from Amazon because the phone comes boxed up and YOU get to actually open it up. Some people don't like their new phones being molested by a salesman's greasy hands
Also, Amazon states that after 30 days, all warranty matters will go through Verizon. So, after the first 30 days, there really isn't a difference between whether or not you bought it from Amazon or Verizon in terms of replacement issues.
Finally, it's $100 cheaper on Amazon's site. If you can wait out the shipping time, that's quite the deal!

As the poster above pointed out the phone is $100 cheaper from Amazon. Plus I still don't pay sales tax on Amazon (for one more year). I have absolutely no worries about returning it either. Bought a 42" TV from Amazon that about 28 days after purchase one of our kids decided it needed a nice big starburst crack in the lower corner. We contacted Amazon and actually told them the kids did it. They said that was not an issue and promptly shipped us another one. Paid to ship the other one back too. I'm a Amazon customer for life (or until they screw me).

I just upgraded from my Galaxy Nexus. Here are my first impressions:
Pros:
- The screen in the Razr HD is much better than the GN. The screen looks more crisp, the colors more accurate, and the the auto-brightness is set at a higher level.
- The radio is much, much better. I'm getting stronger LTE connection at work and the speed tests are much better and more consistent. I'm getting dn/up speeds ~3 times faster than my GN. 25/dn 20/up compared to 7/dn 5/up.
- Battery life is no joke. I have the MAXX and just finished my first battery cycle. I gave the phone a beating and it lasted 27 hours on LTE with 4.5 hours of screen time. I know most phones take 2 - 3 battery cycles to start getting full potential of the battery so I bet it's even going to get better. With the same usage on my GN, probably would have gotten around 10 hours max.
- The build quality is amazing. It feels like a solid phone. iPhone's have great build quality and someone posted that this is the iPhone for men; I agree The speaker is louder, the notification light is great, and I love the look.
- Smart actions are pretty cool. I set a couple up that conserve battery when less than 10% and turn the ringer off when I'm usually sleeping.
- This version of Blur (if it's even called Blur anymore) has to be the lightest skin from any OEM. The UI looks very much like the stock Holo theme.
Cons:
- I was on Jelly Bean with the GN and it was super smooth. This phone stutters occasionally and I know our 4.1 update will help. 4.0 -> 4.1 made a significant difference in smoothness on the GN so I would expect it to do the same on the Razr HD. For now, I've replaced the lockscreen (Holo) and launcher (Nova) with "stock" versions from the market and it made a huge difference.
- I think the phone technically measures smaller than the GN however since it has sharper corners, it feels bigger in the pocket. This really isn't a big deal at all because after a couple of days, I expect that I'll be used to it and won't even notice the difference.
I thought about what is important to me in a phone:
- Screen (size and quality)
- Radio
- Build quality
- Battery life
This phone has it all. It feels so good to use my phone any way I want and not worry about battery life at the end of the day. What good is a phone if it's dead or if you can't get good reception? I was a big fan of rooting and flashing ROMs and this phone eliminates that desire because the phone meets my needs. I'm looking forward to the 4.1 update as it'll provide the following things I miss:
- More fluid UI
- Google Now
- High resolution contact photos
- Expanded notifications
Finally, just a couple of tips for those of you who are coming from the GN:
- Installing Holo Locker gives you the JB lock screen. It's nice and fast and looks great.
- Nova launcher has the ability to replace the app icons with the AOSP ones.
- AOSP Gallery3D from the market is the AOSP gallary app that gives you picasa syncing - this is a must for me!
- For those CM users, Power Toggles allows you to throw toggles in your notification pane.
tl;dr?
Buy this phone.
I ordered my Maxx HD from Simplexity online store few weeks ago. I used this store before for my previous Droid phone. Price of my Maxx HD is $175 no tax and next day service. Got the phone next day and activated it over their web site. It took me about 15 minutes from the time unboxed the package. Pretty cool! The saving got it from Simplexity vs. local Verizon is $120 on the phone price and $60 on the tax. I also bought a white razr HD for my wife. It was $50 less than my Maxx HD!

I'm not the biggest Android fan on the planet... I'm okay with it, but not my -favorite- thing. I had been looking forward to the Lumia 920 for a long time and did end up getting it, actually. But I'm still in my return period and finally decided that, although I couldn't get the exact phone I wanted on Verizon, it was worth it to me to switch onto my family's plan so I could save ~$40/month or so over what I was paying on my own on AT&T. So I picked up a Droid RAZR Maxx HD on Amazon today... only $150! :good:
Verizon DOES have some WP devices... but the Lumia 822 has a mediocre screen and the 8X has inadequate storage space... so Android it was. Oh well.

Why note ii rocks ...!!!

This is my own experience & just thought to put it before my forum-friends .....
When Galaxy S4 arrived , i rushed to the store thinking of replacing my Note II with it & to my surprise ..... when i held it (Galaxy S4) in my hand my first reaction was...My Note II looks far better than this ....
After using S4 for a few minutes (i am glad that the shop-keeper had a working device) i just dropped the idea of buying it over my lovely Note II ....The simple reason was that i found it hardly worth the amount it cost , secondly there may be marginal improvements here & there but it was hardly noticeable.....Third & very important point , i found that my Note II screen quality is unbeatable (size does matter) ...!!
I may think of buying Note 3 (when it arrives & if it's worthwhile) but as of now NOTE II IS UNBEATABLE.....
Why yes, my feelings exactly. I had to make a decision about my new mobile roughly a month before arrival of the new S4 (and HTC One). So I skipped Xperia Z and went with the Note 2.
Later after seeing the S4 in the shop, I felt reassured that I've made the right decision. It's... small. The screen in particular. And looks much worse then the Note 2. And its overly light... feels like a toy in your hand. Don't like it at all, to be honest.
Yeah! You rock! I rock! Rock n' roll bro!
While the Note 2 does rock, that doesn't mean that there aren't better devices out there. I mean, on specifications there are already many devices that are better. But I love my Note 2 I won't be changing this guy for anything any time soon. I mean, don't get me wrong, if a better device for my usage comes along I'll jump on that bandwagon, but until then, my Note 2 is still a very good device.
The only issue I'm having with my Note 2 is battery life as of the last update a few months ago. I'm not getting more than 2.5 hours or 2 hours and 45 minutes of screen on time. But other than that, great hehe.
Maybe the HTC One Tablet/Phone thing that they might release will be an awesome leap! Who knows! If it's really awesome maybe I'll get it but highly doubtful as HTC doesn't update their devices as often as other companies which is a big boooo in my book.

Dude that's awful. Either there's some horrible wakelock draining your battery or your battery is damaged. Former is more likely IMO. Either way 2.5 is unacceptable. And I'm fairly sure THAT much drain is unlikely to be caused by OTA update.
I also saw one s4 today and i asked to play with it and its like the note 2 not faster or anything better, so i stick with note 2
I have the note 2 for one month now before i had the galaxy s3,but i think after the note 2
i never go back to a smaller screen.I love my note 2.

There seems to be wakelocks in there judging from BBS - but is it just the icon or do you have crappy reception over there? If that's the case then you'll obviously get poor battery life.
Also install greenify and hibernate all apps except those you need to receive notifications.

That's true. I hadn't taken that into account. I just recently moved a few months ago and while I still have 3G coverage inside my house, it's towards the low end of the spectrum. That would coincide with the date that I moved. The funny thing is, I just moved a KM away from where I used to live! I think this building is just old!! haha.
Thanks so much

You're welcome. If Note gives you around 2 hours screen on time with poor reception, most other devices would die on you much faster
Would still recommend Greenify BTW - it's excellent.
note II still has the best battery on market and all functions that SIV has will be transfered to N7100 except airview probably

Over a week and still in love...

Wow, using it over a week now and loving this phone even more....
Long stretch from my Galaxy S5, why didn't this phone come before I bought my S5 LOL
No battery issues here, getting more out of this phone then my S5 and better after the last OTA update. For anyone who's having battery issues, there are several features to disable to get the most out of your battery, do a search on google, there's a ton of people who's increased battery life by taking these steps.
As for the bloatware, I usually root my phone but I don't see the reason too with this one even with all the bloatware, most you can disable. The PC Link is a godsend, wow, every phone should have this feature. Speed wise, I've got mine on Balance mode and it's lightning speed, you can go all out and draw a bit more speed by using the Performance mode but you'll sacrifice some battery life, I didn't notice a whole lot of battery drain in that mode, may go back just to get that extra speed.
The only real gripe I have with this phone is the ability to sync effectively with Outlook, I keep my contacts and schedule on Outlook and with the S5 Samsung Kies was a nice free option to do so. Wish ASUS had a similar app to sync Outlook. The best way I found so far to do this is SyncDroid, worth the $4 to get my contacts synced alone. Calendar I just use Google Calendar Sync seems to do the job. But still prefer to stick with one PC app that does it altogether. If anyone out there found a better (Free) option then SyncDroid, please let me know. I won't use Outlook.com, I find it a pain and somewhat glitchy. Outlook is a pretty widely used app and I think this should be mandatory for all Android phones, this to me would make Android the ultimate mobile device. I paranoid about syncing my entire contact list and calendar via online/cloud etc. I prefer to do it locally with my pc.
This truly is an amazing product for the price, screen is not as bright as my S5 SuperAmoled but I'll take the performance, size, memory over screen hands down, big deal, it's a bit hard to see under sunlight but honestly, I don't use it under direct sunlight that much to ditch the phone. Asus has made excellent effort to keep OTA's coming, which is more then what I can say for Samsung phones. I don't think this phone is going away anytime soon, the only store that sells this phone in our city can't keep this thing in stock, they are constantly sold out, that's a good thing, if it sells that well, Asus will continue to support this phone. The hardware in the phone has great potential for future improvements, Android OS updates will just keep making it better.
Let's just hope the built in battery (which is my other gripe) will last. I hate built in batteries, gives me Iphone jitters I hope the battery is easily replaceable. But Samsung's new flagship has also gone this route. I saw the Zenfone 2 takedown and it seems relative straight forward so battery replacement is doable, would be nice to see companies start making 4000mAh or 5000mAh batteries for this phone
For all who are having intermittent issues and giving up, just be a little patient, this is a brand new phone, there will always be issues, happens to flagship phones, Asus is doing very well getting OTA's to us to fix these problems and I'm confident there will be more to come, growing pains. And please, don't knock this phone because it's not up to par with your Iphone 6 or S6 or phones that are twice/three times the price, it's like giving a Honda Civic a bad review because it doesn't compare to your Audi or Mercedes, how much did your Mercedes cost compared to your Civic, come on, let's be realistic.
Good luck with your new ZF2!
The problem is large amount of zen2 having defective battery. It causes high battery drain or randomly shutdown issue. I also have my battery replaced from service center. Otherwise, this fone perform very well with its price
Sorry I didn't read whole post...I just want to know how much SOT are you getting?

I haven't really measured using the battery usage. I go by normal use through out the day comparing it with my S5, I'll go through a day running my typical apps, texting, surfing and emailing and the odd calls. I'll end up with about 60-70% battery life by about 9 pm from about 8 am, that's when I sit down and plug it in to charge, I consider pretty good considering I was getting about 30-40% with my Galaxy S5 using it the same way. Sorry to hear you're having that luck, with any phone there are defective units, I've only read a handful who's had battery issues, which version do you have? ie. North America, China etc.

It's a taiwan version, i had issue with it after 2 weeks of using. I also see people report error from other versions too in zentalk
I've used mine for a bit over a day and I'm impressed. Performance is great, build quality seems great too. I've read some reviews that state the phone feels cheap, but to me it feels and looks better than Samsung S4 or S5.
I have no problem reaching the power button on top, it feels easier than pressing the power button on the side of my old 4.7" Blu Life Play phone, as I don't have to change the grip to reach the power button.
Battery life is a concern though. Yesterday I spent the day applying updates, rooting, instalar all my apps and tweaking all config options. The charge did not last me the day. Hopefully today it'll fare better today after all customization and setup is done.

Not sure if that helps.

i have no problem with battery too, with a normal use, some calls, web browsing, whatsapp and facebook i still have more than 50% at home at night, a great improvement since my samsung s3
i also tested the display on some hours, and it should last 5/6 hours of continuos web browsing

I've been reading a lot of reviews for the ZF2 seems like the CN versions have more problems, I wonder if they got some duds. And also, I've noticed that the ZE551 CN versions have different configurations, maybe that's the problem.
Sorry to bring up an older post, but I see a lot of people loving this phone, and some haters (There's always haters)....I have an iphone 6 now after being on Android for a long time, and I'm about fed up with iOS...All of the things people say about iOS are true...locked down...Boring...Ect... That's a different topic for a different day..
My question is, how is the screen? Lots of people have complained about brightness, or lack there of. Also, camera, is it at least average? I'm looking to go about 300 on a phone and there's a few choices out there, but none seem as powerful as the Zenfone 2 with 4gb of ram, 64gb storage. It seems a little more future proof than the OPO, so I'm thinking of getting it....
Will I be disappointed coming from the Nexus line, then iPhone 6?

If you have little patience to wait little more for 5.1 to come up (which most people dont have and hence judging things wrongly) then its worth having for sure..

I've had mine now about 3 weeks and I think that the phone is great for the price. The camera is OK, certainly not iPhone 6 good, but reasonable, especially when you use alternate camera apps. The screen is fine, but once again, I'm indoors most of the day, so no issue. Max brightness outside is not so great the one or two times I've used it.
I think that the phone is a work in progress and that a lot of the deficiencies that you see people griping about will be addressed with future Android updates. On the plus side, Asus had been sending out updates frequently so they seem committed to making this phone better.

I came from a Nexus 5 and was considering the same two phones as you. Decided to go with the zenfone 2 based on Asus being more reputable and customer friendly from what i read. So far its been great. I did root (which is super easy via one click) and used titanium to freeze all the unwanted apps. Haven't experienced any lag. Camera wont be as good as the Iphone, but definitely better than my nexus 5. I dont game on it because I dont see the point of gaming on a phone, but i did run hearthstone flawlessly. To me, the build quality is nice. comparable to Galaxy s4/5, so im not sure why so many reviews bring it up as a major con. at $300 this phone is awesome. And once Asus pushed out 5.1 it should shine even more, as 5.1 bumps android up to 64bit, and this has a 64bit chipset.
This phone is way better than I expected for $299. I'm coming from an LG G2, and I'm not missing anything. You can spend 3x this much on a phone and you won't end up with much more.
Honestly my biggest nit-pick is the power button placement, but double-tap-to-wake/sleep is far more convenient than any possible hardware switch. Battery life is a touch lower than I'm used to, but QC 2 is really great.

Nexus 6P, MXP killer?

To start, I'm definitely satisfied with my 64gb, black leather and red accent MXP. My biggest concern right now is the announcement of the Nexus 6P. Modders/developers, will this effect the potential of future development for the MXP? I'm with Verizon, so my choices on rootable/unlocked devices is very limited. Anyone else concerned and debating on selling/returning MXP? Also, with Android M announced, this will now show how truthful Motorola was on updating MXP.
I am happy with Moto. Nexus 6p is not much better oh and more expensive.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
I haven't even seen my custom MXP yet and I'm debating returning it. My MXP has been at my house since September 18, but I'm at college and won't be able to retrieve it until October 10. I only have a few days left whether to tell my Mom to return it or not (Motorola only allows returns within 14 days of delivery).
The Nexus 6P definitely looks like the better overall phone spec-wise. But the differences are marginal.
The upsides to the MXP that make this a very hard decision are the customization, so I like the design much better (doesn't look like an iPhone), and the Motorola apps that the phone comes with (I kinda like the fact that it's not 100% stock android, but close). I'll also be able to have it in my possession much earlier (Nexus 6P doesn't look like it's shipping until November).
The only reasons I'd go for the Nexus 6P is the bigger battery and the better dev support.
Very hard decision to make here. Motorola's customization should not be overlooked here, while I think that the Nexus 6P's marginally better specs could be.

I know the two devices are so very similar with a $100 price difference. Just hoping modders will stick with developing for the MXP, biggest reasons for getting the MXP, was for near stock OS and development here at XDA.
Also, who should I donate to for development of CM for MXP? (I know it's probably a huge list of users, I do like compensating those for their time and efforts)
The only person I've seen doing anything with the MXP recently is Harsh. That is great but the odds of people suddenly grabbing this device for development, with its fairly obvious and well reported shortcomings is pretty low IMO. Especially with the nexus already announced and shipping in 30 days.
I bought my MXP on the third and still don't have the stupid thing. Sorry but that is pretty pathetic on Moto's part.
Add to all this Leno gutting Moto right before launch and the odds of updates being speedy being diminished greatly makes the MXP the riskier device.
I don't need the finger print scanner but its nice to have. I normally don't lock my phone but I would with the scanner and for last pass and bank stuff its really nice to not have to tap in my log pass word. Add to that Amoled is better and a better chipset that won't struggle when the gpu runs and bigger battery make the $100 a no brainer. My pure is most likely going back assuming it even gets here.

I wouldn't return it, 6P is much more expensive per storage option and really you'd only be adding a fingerprint scanner, besides that its just a small step up. Also you probably wouldn't see it until years end since on the reddit threadspeoples delivery dates are now at mid-late november and that was hours ago.
The dang device has been out for 3 weeks! The developers that have the brand new device have had it for 3 weeks, and most wouldn't not buy another device after they just bought a $400 phone for a downgrade in specs! //rant

Valid point... Maybe with the 2 devices being so similar, developing for each might not be too different either and possibly porting 6p mods to MXP might be an option.
I'm having a little buyers regret as of today, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $100 more and I've grown to quite like the Moto sensor features and their "always listening" feature.... I use it much more than I thought I would.
I'm sitting here looking at a brand new OnePlus2 that I got yesterday - I received my invite and had to try it. I'm thinking I could sell that and get the 6P (with a little more $$ thrown in) and see what I think of it?
It's a never ending game.... In a couple months, a new Flagship will be out and I'll wish I had that too... I have to stop somewhere and pause for a while.

The OP2 sounds pretty weak (speaker) compared to the MXP. It even sounds pretty weak compared to a Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/iPhone..... Also, during the initial setup my battery went from 93% to 52% in just a 35-40 minute period. This included downloading and applying the 2.1 Oxygen update and several apps from the app store and restarting after the update. My M9 had a Snapdragon 810 and it was snappier than the OP2, IMO, and sounded a lot better too.
I did like the off-screen buttons and the home button/fingerprint scanner.
I think that's what I'll do.... Sell it for as close to the $400 I paid (after shipping) for it and put that back for a N6P.
The biggest complaint I have about the MXP is I can't find a screen protector to fit it!

Interesting... Thanks for the response. I recommend the 6P pre-order, this phone looks like it will be a winner. Huawei makes pretty nice phones, I'm glad they teamed up with Google. I was thinking about getting the OPT still but trying out HydrogenOS, I'm hearing good things about it and of course you always have CM.
You don't have cm with OnePlus 2... They ended their relationship a long time ago, hence why they had to go to Oxygen.

The oneplus one was great. I had an invite for the 2 but I passed on it for the Pure. Now my pure is going back as its not living up to expectations and I have the BIg P on pre order.
Its like $50 more for the nexus. Lots of little things make that worth it, biggest of all is the development on the nexus will be much better.
For me switching to the Nexus will only cost me about $5 more or $55 more if I do a 64GB since I spent $475 on the Moto with 32GB and wood cover and $20 on a memory card I probably don't need but bought simply because I could lol. So take away the memory card and the upgrade is only $25 but I get a better battery, fingerprint reader, instant updates, at least 2 years of updates, maybe better camera, AMOLED displace, notification light, etc....seems like a good deal at least for me.

I'm basically in the same situation. 64gb with leather and have a 64gb SanDisk UHS 3 card. If I bought the 64gb 6p I would save money. I might just keep MXP so I don't have to deal with selling it.

Just to update you on something, OT here...
I boxed up my MXP this morning and have been using the OP2 all day... I've got about 10 hours of up-time with about 1:20 SOT and I'm at 77% on my battery. To be honest, this feels just about like the MXP... And I'm hoping this gets better after a few days of use (set up like a new ROM last night before bed).
I've had wifi on all day, took more calls than usual (4 calls), listened to music through my speaker (still sounds weak) and played 3 songs though my bluetooth speaker, just to test it out........Plus all the normal texting, email, weather, app updates, ect...
So the battery seems to be better after initial setup, which I'm extremely glad!
Now, if I can just make it with this super weak speaker for 5 weeks until my N6P arrives, that's gonna be the hardest!

So I ended up passing. I ordered the product and I saw the processing time may take 5-10 days. Who know, maybe we'll get lucky and the 6P ships early (fingers crossed) . I've been using my OPO and It's still smooth as day one, so I will hold on to it and use it as my backup phone. I will probably use the OPT money for a smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2 comes out tomorrow.

Sounds like a good plan! I never had the OPO, but it seems to still have a pretty strong following.
FWIW: I was told there was a 5-10 processing period too, ordered it Thursday evening.....Tried to cancel it a couple hours later and was told "it's already been processed and cannot be cancelled now".... It arrived Monday morning. So I think the 5-10 day is a CYA thing they use, which isn't a bad thing, I guess?
I did the Smartwatch thing earlier this year (Moto360 than a Sony SW3)... Loved it at first, but it only lasted about a month. I didn't like the bluetooth drain on the battery..... My OCD already watches my phone battery too much, with the extra drain and now another device to watch the battery on, I didn't get anything done!

Feeling ripped off with Note Edge

I bought the Note Edge (with Verizon) because I wanted a flagship phone with all the benefits. I however still do not have the Marshmallow update. I cannot use SamsungPay. I cannot use Samsung Internet Browser 4.0 with Adblock Fast. The list goes on. I'm regretting getting this phone. Am I missing something or is the Note Edge the forgotten Flagship phone?
You kinda hit it. I have one and will be waiting on the March Marshmallow update if my battery life does not improve i'm done. I average 2 Hrs screen on time. My Nexus 6 which is supposed to be also bad on battery gives me 4-5 hrs. I do love the functionality of an actual separate screen not what Sammy decided to go with for the 6 series.
I used to LOVE this phone, but the updates ruined it for me. I also average 2 hours on time, thats less than half of what it used to be. If I let it sit overnight 8 hours, I drop from 100%-80% in 8 hours. It really sucks because I won't be able to upgrade until summer. Let's hope this Marshmallow update improves the phone if it ever comes.
Wait when you guys say you average only 2 hours screen time, is that because your phone is on 5.0.1 or 5.1.1. ?
And did you try custom ROMS?
And to OP, there is a Marshmellow update coming. Its just going to take a while. I've seen the beta of it.
Btw it is sad that Samsung abandoned this great peice of innovation. I like mine and though I wish I could get more than 4 hours of heavy on screen time usage, I guess I can't complain hearin what you are going through. I immediately downgraded my phone to 4.4.4 once I recieved it. Not that there was anything wrong with 5.0.1 but I just didn't like some of the pop notifications. It annoyed me quite a bit and Poweramp didn't work well with it and the Edge screen like it does on 4.4.4 so I went to 4.4.4
I'm on 5.1.1
5.0.1 was fine for me, but it was the 5.1 update that really ruined the phone. I can't use the fingerprint scanner because it makes the phone freeze and my battery life is trash!! I wish I would've stayed on Kitkat, I'm so jealous!!
my screen whites i noticed is now yellowish in color, i bought 2 aftermarket batteries and it still doesnt last that long, about 3 hrs screen time, dont think i will get the s7 though, might just get a used note 5 til the note 6 drops

This can't be happening with a Custom ROM. Have you guys tried using a Custom ROM?
I'm on stock rooted 5.1.1 rom on the fy version. I get about 3 hrs screen time with mobile data on. I unplug from charger at around 7 am en plug it back in around 11 pm. If I keep mobile data off and only wi-fi on, I get about 4 hrs. The problem is that the 3g or 4G connection drains too much battery... if I'm in airplane mode using Wi-Fi only, I get about 6 hours screen on time. If I use the phone continuously after unplugging I get about 5 hours screen time mobile data on.
The drain happens when I'm not using the phone... all the above SOT a times are with screen brightness at 50%...
I really love this phone. Great use of the edge screen. Unfortunately not much development going on... For me it's hands down the best phone I ever had, and I've had a couple of other flagship devices...
It is not that bad
Firstly I would like to say Hi
I am on the rant train myself, but I would like to clear some things for most of the people in this thread. The main battery drain that occurs in many Samsung devices (I have witnessed it on my Note Edge as well as on Galaxy s6 and my Galaxy s4) is caused from weird google play services bug. The essential of the bug is that once your Mobile Data is connected they are no way to disconect it. There is a way and to acomplish it, one must have wi-fi access and must restart the phone so it will disconect the Mobile Data and use the wi-fi radio.
So TL;DR go look at any app that is eating your battery and if you notice "total connection time" which is WAY above the level it should have been you are a winner! I am looking for a way to remove this issue since I got the phone (6 months and more now) and as far as I know there is no success in doing so.
Apart from this problem, the phone is EXTREMELY cool. Very stable (taking in mind that it runs TW), good camera, good screen, S PEN = magic, Edge panel is something once man got into there is no comming back! So the battery life issue may not be on the Samsung's side this time, guys. I am loving the phone and I am expecting Marshmallow to cure the issue I am ranting about for 15 minutes now..
Good luck for all of you trying to like your phones. If you have spent so much money on something there must be a thing that will make you happy for having it!

Agreed. Coupled with the spen and the multi-window edge panel there's absolutely nothing like it IMO. Having been eligible for an upgrade for months now I've looked at the S6 edge plus, Note 5, new iphones etc but nothing comes close to the Edge.
Grab a spare battery + charging dock from ebay and forget about battery life.
Im going to be sad if I break it as there is simply no substitute for this phone. I'll also be sad if they kill it with the marshmallow update lol.
Why take the chance ?
Don't update.

Hi guys. I feel the same. I paid Samsung £700 when it was first released for what I thought was an amazing concept, flagship device. We were promised the world and we were delivered nothing. It feels as if Samsung just gave up on the Edge even though it promised so much.
Things I dislike
-The update to Marshmallow is slow (though I've read it should be with us in 1-3 months time).
-The dev community for the Edge is poor compared to other devices.
-TouchWiz sucks (decent features but poor performance and looks).
-Battery life/SOT (I had to carry a spare battery/keep phone plugged in via usb)
Things I like
-Edge screen is quite useful
-Screen is gorgeous!
-Uniqueness
-Overall look and feel
I've just placed an order for the Nexus 6P - I will of course miss the S-Pen and some other TouchWiz features but I won't miss the sluggishness of TouchWiz - I hate it!
Having owned three Samsung flagship devices when they were first released (Galaxy S, Note, Note Edge) it does feel like my affinity with Samsung handsets has come to an end. I will of course still buy their TV's, monitors etc., just not mobiles. You only need to take one look at the Nexus community/dev scene to see what your missing.
See you guys, I've had a nice time, but I'm out!
The big problem with this phone is Samsung's MDM suite that's built in to the phone's programming.
The thing's a royal pain in the azz.
It makes the phone neurotic.

Yeah I don't know what I'll do once my phone either breaks or the battery and spare battery give way. I'm gonna try and be extra careful with it. This phone is handsdown feature wise, the best thing ever. I just wish more people saw it that way so Samsung would've continued with the line. I just cannot fathom how quickly Samsung ditched this phone.
Everyone I've met, I mean everyone including dumb girls think this phone is the ****.

Im getting 5+ hours screen on time with 5.1.1 not rooted. Just bought new batteries. I bought the white spare charger that comes with a battery twice, so i knew I'd be getting proper Samsung batteries.

Aren't there a lot of fakes out there? Fake batteries I mean. Where did you buy yours? I wouldn't think the battery only lasts two years

That's why i bought the spare charger box and battery, it's more likely to come with an official Samsung battery.. seems to work great, bought from Amazon from one of the other sellers rather than the main add that had reviews saying the battery only lasted a few weeks.

i was having problems with the phone recently. it would not wake up or the screen would flicker when i tried to go between apps. it was really frustrating. i also could not use the google messenger text app after the google play services auto updated from the play store. then there was the edge board app (which i love) crashing. it was a mess. i tried to go back to kit kat. i had odin and the kit kat .tar and i was denied. (i started a thread about getting help to get around the "fail" notice i receive but no responses yet). with that said i just did a factory reset and i am back to normal. this is, like others have stated, THE best phone I have ever owned. That is saying a lot because i used to gt a new flagship phone every year for the past 15 years. I slipped samsungs shameful iPhone clone offering of the note 5 and since they made no note edge 2 i will use this til it dies. they still have unlocked international versions on ebay so if samsung screws us again this year i will skip my 2nd upgrade opportunity.

Yeah. It sucks to be a minority in everything especially when it comes to taste. For those of us that live and die by how great this phone is, we're gonna have to deal with being stuck with it till it dies or we can't find it in the market. Best phone I have ever had despite its battery life. Utility is simply unmatched
