T mobile blocked tethering?? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have had tehtering for as long as i have had t mobile and all of a sudden today they blocked it. now what?? is it just gone or is there a way to work around it??? my phone is rooted thanks

I haven't tried tethering today but I would think if you're rooted then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Most roms come preinstalled with tethering apps and you can download them.

They CAN block it on a rooted device if they notice. Not much you can do about it.

Can they block pdanet? Bluetooth or USB tehter?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA

Same question for me. I use tethering sparingly, but just got blocked today. I'm fully rooted and on cm7 rc3, using the native tethering from cm7 - and this no longer works.
So are there any 3rd party apps that will bypass the block? I tried barnacle and wifi tether for root users, but couldn't seem to get either to even connect to the computer correctly.

I found a solution that works for me anyway. Not sure if I'm supposed to post that kind of info here, but feel free to PM me and I can share if anyone has this same problem (again, not sure my solution would work for everyone).

A quick and dirty fix that works in a pinch for t-mobile is to create a new APN and make it epc.tmobile.com, then switch to it. I tried it the other day after they started sending me to that site where they tell you to add tethering to your plan. It worked.

Does that mean T-Mobile is using a new APN? I'm only asking because I use epc.tmobile.com all the time after flashing a new ROM.

No. For some reason that seems to temporarily confuse their system into letting you tether.

sharing computers internet with phone?

Yo all!!
ok.. i have been trying to get my phone to connect Via HTC sync V2 and latest V3 but have been told that it will not work as we are not using Sence? (FroydVillain 1.5)
if so... i need a little help....
With HTC Sync (before Froyd..), i could get the phone to use the computers internet.
Is there any way of doing this without Sync?
Cheers all
Simple as that! You have FV 1. 5!!!! Just connect the usb cable and enable tethering under >setting >wireless connection, you can now use wireless or 3G with your pc... ;-)

yes i can see that aps will cost if you've got no data plan with a smart phone, i did have to abort a few auto updates when i was on holiday and being charged roaming rates and now routinely set them to off. If it was me I would look for the apk files from and load them from the sd card or failing that walk the streets looking for an open wifi
had a quick google and found this , hope it help the op

Well I use the stock app and T-Mobile says is free (for now). You could use other apps like Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether. You could also use the andorid-wifi-teather app http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. I like the latter of the two the best.
If you don't use the stock tmo app, you should be fine... we won't know till Nov 14th tho...

ive seen a couple people saying they gotten wifi tether 2.0.5 to work fine (before permroot) but it doesnt seem to work for me (kernel does not support tethering)
How did you guys get it to work? correct me if im wrong but temproot/permroot shouldnt have anything to do with it cus its saying its the kernel... (unless this is the generic error message)
perm rooted, with s off, I just dl 2.0.5 pre13
Works fine...

Has anyone heard/figured out how TMo will be "stopping" tethering (update, account sync file, etc.)?
I will not accept an OTA (won't get one while rooted anyway) and have account sync turned off.

this ones a mystery so far... I just dont think tmo would announce the charge then make the change.... I would guess its already done (key word guess but who knows this change could of been made months ago... before the g2's release)
Anyone see a change yet or figure out how they are going to charge for tethering?

Does t-mobile know if i'm tethering?

So i'm running CM7 and I was at the airport yesterday with no free wifi. I used the USB tethering feature built into CM7 which happened to work just fine.
However, i am just wondering, is there anyway t-mobile will know i'm tethering?
Heard yes and no, never been billed for tethering through my carrier

AFAIK, no. There has been no definitive answer to this. However, I don't believe T-Mo has any "long armed reach" into your phone. All they are is a carrier. They provide you a signal, what you do with that signal is up to you. All they should see is a steam of data to various points on the internet on their end.
Now, if these points happens to be things like a WoW server or CoD server; aka things that 100% can't run on your phone -- maybe they would have some info. Surfing, email, and downloading should all be totally innocuous though.

Mobile hotspots a no go.

I have been trying to get mobile hotspot to work on 1.83 to much disappointment. I have it rooted, I tried gladenabler, and I have even installed gingerblur as last rom it removed the verification altogether.
This time it is just not going away. I have also selected =false using root explorer for that one value that was listed in a previous post.
I am not on att I'm in another country with no tethering restrictions.
Any help would make me very grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Can't edit from my phone but in an update to what I wrote earlier. Editing the build.prop file actually worked but required a reboot.
In retrospect I should have thought of that but it wasn't listed in the op.
So, if you are also getting this problem
Follow the directions on this post

Then REBOOT AFTER.

Wifi-Tether Android

I actually have an employee plan so 40 for unlimited and tethering but if you add the apn u can also use barnicle wifi tether. U can't find it on the market (anymore/F-u too att) you'll have to Google but it is better than using my included option in network settings. I have also used the open one on code.Google.com and has been great. I love my atrix and webtop and lapdock but if I had a chance at getting it all on tmo or sprint, I'd jump ship. Making Google hide apps from it's own users? Wtf? If I were sprint I'd be praying att buys tmo because everyone would run to sprint. If I didn't have said plan, I'm not sure I could take the abuse they give their high paying customers.

Probably a stupid question on XDA, but are you rooted and running custom roms on your S2s? I'm interested if anyone has tried this on stock firmware with one of thee non-root tethering apps. I would test myself but I can't remember the last time I had a phone with stock firmware.

Yep I used both the s2 and s3 sucessfully.....
There is also another topic explaining another method of replacing ur apn in the general subforum of the tmobile s3
As for the s2 there is threads for apns and then for user agents
Live throws a code stating that some items may not be available but playing and netflix green light
Updates you have to dl on ur pc then transfer it to ur xbox by disc, etc storage medium
I have also changed my dns servers but I can still use tmobiles dns and do both
I use to have a full live experience until the last 360 update and now something borked....nebody have ideas? Lol
So I should have no problem using my sensation as a hotspot to power my roku box to stream Netflix to my t.v. right? Thanks!!!
