Japanese language option is available on S3. Why not on the Note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi, when I tried the S3 in a store in HK today, I could choose lots of languages including Japanese. Once I chose that option, everything turned into Japanese. It was very convenience for me as I don't need to download special language option from 3rd party. However, on Note+ICS and Note+GB, I only found: chinese, english and korean. How come the number of language available is so limited on the Note even with ICS installed? Is it because such large selection of languages are only available under ICS 4.0.6?

I guess that's just how Samsung made it. On CM9 or AOSP roms Japanese language is available even on 4.0.3 builds.

Thanks. If I buy the Note (be it with GB or ICS pre-installed), is there any way to get the official Japanese language pack without the need to fool around with the system? The 3rd party ones I tried in a store did not change the system font.

I don't think that's possible - not without at least rooting your phone. But that shouldn't be a problem since the process is completely automated. Also i'd really recommend to flash CM9 which frankly is a lot better than stock and has full Japanese support ( both system language and kana input )

What about Japanese language voice recognition?
I recall that when I was in a store few weeks ago, I installed two Japanese language input apps. Don't recall the names. The Note was able to recognize simple Japanese.
Will I lose the S pen functionality as mentioned in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoZ2djKmFxk

Japanese voice recognition is available and working on CM9 ( tested it, inputs words in kana ).
And yes, CM9 is a variant of ICS based on Android Open Source project. It's pure Android without TouchWiz. The only thing missing from it are Samsung's apps like S-Memo but they're working on replacement apps which will soon be added.
Worth to take a look:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1627854
If you don't want to flash custom ROM there is always option to root your device and manually install .apks responsible for Japanese text and voice input. People install keyboard.apk all the time and it works just fine even on lower OS version.
"Will I lose the S pen functionality as mentioned in:"
Yes and no. The S-Pen will still work as an input device, but as of now - CM9 does not have S-Memo app so you'll have to install some 3rd party apps.

Thanks. Will CM9 be able to install and run Premium Suite for sure?
If I install CM9 and my Note needs repairing, will Samsung refuses to do so by saying that I have voided the warranty?

Reflash to stock and you can get support from sammy when needed.

Chance for premium suit on cm9 is pretty low if u talking about the s note app. Due to it is heavy based on touchwiz, even we are going to get the support on s pen some time later. I doubt we can use anything from toichwiz library without getting bashed by samsung.

I think the reason why Samsung did not release a version of ICS for the international Note with the Japanese language is because Docomo sells the Japan variant of the Note call the SC-05D, as the international Note was never intended to be sold there to begin with.

Premium Suite depends on TouchWiz, hence will not be available within CM9 - unfortunately.
As far as warranty is concerned, whenever you need to use their service, you can flash stock firmware back and they won't notice the change.

Just bought the Galaxy Note with Android 2.3.6 pre-installed. I plan to stay with this OS at least for two weeks. I know that there are apps to allow one to enter Japanese. Is there one that allows me to change the system font to Japanese? Any recommended apps to allow Japanese voice recognition? Thanks.

Really? So there's no Japanese in any of the firmwares for the "global" Note? What's the point of that stupid variant? <_< Different hardware? (like the Note for AT&T).
Is there any way to add a system language without switching completely to custom roms? (I mean, just taking any official rom and add Japanese to the languages already available). Keyboards are easy to have, I've been using Google's for flick input and mazec for handwriting.
Oh well... I'm going to buy the Note and was hoping of using it in Japanese (just for fun, I'm not Japanese, just learning)... :crying:

Galaxy S / Vibrant / Fascinate in 1 Section

Why not putting all these phones into 1 Section?
They all have Touchwiz, same updates, software.
I see no reason why there are 3 different sections on these phones.
exactly
we raised the same concerns here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723076
see the last 10 message
They each have slightly modified ROM's. Also hardware is also different among them.
It makes things less complicated for users of the devices. For developers it may be a pain though. I'm going to say there are more users here than developers.
it just the camera changes, and button changes
no major hardware changes AFAIK
software works just the same
the only thing to be careful about is to label the roms properly for each of those
but the forums should defnitely be together instead of split apart
Well two of them are GSM, while the Fascinate is a CDMA version, it adds a camera flash, but I am not sure if it lost the 16gb of built in space like the Epic variant has.
well at least the I9000 series, plus the 2 GSM variant from USA should be all in one forum
then have another section for the CDMA version of the SGS

100% disagree. As a user of one of these devices, I find it an enormous pain in the backside, because every day i have to check 12 forum boards instead of 3, because people post things in one board but not the other, all the time.
99%+ of the stuff in the boards is useful for all phone variants.

agreed, its annoying
i'd rather deal with some people forgetting to specify their phone derivative than checking 4x3 forums
100% merge these catergories, its very annoying that the phones are getting split up, when so similar.
why not even merge the general, themes and apps sections, all that will be the same.
mayb just have 1 dev forum for each, but still under the same catergory.
please?
It's really annoying to check 3 forums instead of 1.
Most people don't even know that the most things are even compatible for the other versions!
Are the roms completely compatible with one another though?
They're slightly different, but that is just a matter of labeling them correctly.
This reminds me very much of the G1 and Magic forums, as someone mentioned. The G1 was where most development was happening and it had a separate forum. Magic 32A and 32B were in a separate forum of their own, despite the fact that majority of G1 ROMs worked fine on a 32B Magic (exactly the same hardware, the only difference was the absence of hw keyboard on 32B) and, on the other hand, 32B/G1 ROMs needed some adjusting to be used on 32A. It was a total chaos and, as a result, 32B people were using G1 forums for the most part as well and the Magic forum became almost exclusive 32A forum, which suffered greatly from the fact that even though 32A differs very little, most of the development is happening somewhere else. It was quite sad to look at.
And now the same thing is already happening here. We have to check 12 forums instead of three (which I believe many of us simply don't do as it's annoyingly time consuming, so the development for I9000 suffers). Most of the development is carried on in the Vibrant forum and the international I9000 forums are already showing the signs of "going the 32A way", even though 99 % of the ROMs for I9000 will be/is the same as for the Vibrant...

which of the 2 vibrant?
i9000m or SGH-T959 ?
because i9000m works fine with i9000 ROMs and vice versa

You know, you could use the Google you forced me to use to answer you to check if Vibrant really is SGH-T959 yourself (I knew it's not I9000M, but apart from that...). So yes, it's SGH-T959.
And saying that I9000M ROM work fine with I9000 and vice versa is a bit inaccurate - there are differences in the radio, so if I flash I9000M ROM on my I9000, I lose 3G. Easy to rectify, yes, but the difference in ROM is there.
Ideally the re-organized forum should look like this:
- Samsung Galaxy S
- - Galaxy S General
- - Galaxy S Android Development
- - - Galaxy S GT-I9000 Brazil
- - - Galaxy S GT-I9000 International
- - - Galaxy S GT-I9000M Vibrant
- - - Galaxy S I909 China
- - - Galaxy S (model ID) Epic 4G
- - - Galaxy S (model ID) Fascinate
- - - Galaxy S SGH-i897 Captivate
- - - Galaxy S SGH-T959 Vibrant
- - - Galaxy S SHW-M110S Korea
- - Galaxy S Accessories
- - Galaxy S Themes and Apps
Word. Just do it like AllGamer suggests.

Agreed. Anything phone-specific can go in the subforum for that phone, but if "Android Development" is a forum itself then it could be used for anything generic to the whole series.
I was against splitting the forums to this extent before, and have come from the Touch Pro, which shared its forum with the AT&T version (the Fuze). These had some minor differences, with the Fuze having a different keyboard layout and lacking a front-facing camera, but generally shared ROMs - usually a keyboard layout changer application was included.
I fear that having the forums so separate makes development slower and more insular, and creates the impression that these devices are very different, when they're actually very similar.

One would think. I'm about to go down this road and have unrooted and rommed many phones. However I have spent over 2 hours reading thread after thread here trying to fig out how to do it on a vzw ics stocked Xoom and I keep seeing , this tool is no longer supported, this way might work but this doesn't you could brick etc. I have never been more confused in my life. All I want is a nice Rom that I can use saxixs with so I can play deadtrigger with my ps3 controler on and when I'm not, a Rom that smokes the stock Rom. One would think that would be easy. Unlock, flash cwm, backup, wipe, flash superuser, flash Rom. Let sit for 10 mins reboot done.
If your know where to point me plz for the love of the gods do. Cause its not in the stickies. Otherwise looks like moto is the plan.
Thx.

for a xoom all u need to do in unclock it, ( which will wipe all data )
by connecting the tablet to pc, ( have fastboot and adb installed on pc these you can get when u install adnroid sdk )
with device in fastboot mode
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
then follow the onscreen steps.
this zip is for something else( fastboot script for xybaord) but contains the files u need ( adb and fastboot.exe)
open cmd prompt and cd to where ever u extract this to and to the code above.
once thats complete you can then doenload a rom and a recovery and flash away,
might i suggest this recovery here twrp and this rom EOS jellybean
as too wiesman2613 and alex94kumar i think the OP was reffering to moto unlocking boot loaders for xoom2 xybaords and others.
Thx!! Do you know if JB is saxis compatible?

When I read the article a few days back, I was like wtf, they already allow us to unlock it. It's a totally pointless tool. Well for us anyway. It has potentially for other motorola devices. I do hope this goes the way HTC did with bootloader unlocking
what about the XOOM2??
Wow.. this is a weird tool!
It promises to unlock:
Photon Q
RAZR developer edition
XOOM – Verizon
XOOM WiFi
As i can see, i'll unlock 2 GED devices (hahaha), a developer edition of a phone (that should have been unlocked in factory). I suppose that this tool is useful for only Photon Q users (and RAZR dev. ed. too). But the two GED devices are unlockable by fastboot. Even my MZ601 that is not on the list is unlocked with fastboot.
This would be vary good news for XOOM2 or Xyboard users if those devices would be supported aswell.
Right now it seems like thumbs down for motorola (maybe new devices will be added to the list but seems unlikely)
If motorola keeps doing s*it like this then my next tablet will not be a motorola (an unlockable bootloader with tegra3 would be nice but i guess that is just dreaming).
It looks like a PR stunt to me.
They know they get hated on by VZW customers for locking their devices, so they're playing a mind game saying " Hey look! :cyclops: We're unlocking Verizon devices FIRST! You like us now?" expecting VZW people to be like " Ehrmagerd! Ernlercked Bertlerders!!"
People who have these devices and want to unlock them probably already know it's as easy as "fastboot oem unlock." This tool is useless.
The tool is rubbish at the moment. But give it a little bit of time. I'm hoping (just like everyone else here) that this'll turn out like HTCdev
will this finally let me use an otg host cable to read thumbdrives without rooting?
Great news!

There's only one GED in that list.
I don't see older Motorola devices being unlocked any time soon. Future ones yes, old ones, I doubt it.
In reality, if you care about updates/support and you want an Android device, the OEM is irrelevant. What matters is if its a GED or Nexus.

Both, the mz604 and the mz600/602 are GED. Google makes the software for both of them. Mz604 just gets new firmware faster because VZW wants to test for a couple of months before releasing it to the public.

Meizu MX4

Hello!
I will buy one Meizu MX4 and I would like to know if there is anyone who has already one to know his impresions.
I have to say that I will buy it on Aliexpress ( china Price) and not in the Meizu Mart that is $150 more expensive
Thanks
I don't own a MX4 yet but I'm following it closely.
Today I read a very positive review made by HDblog.it, an important Italian website.
They say this device has good display, loud speaker and take great pictures.
They experienced some minor software glitches, but nothing major and we know that software issues can be corrected easily.
meizu mx4
I am also interested in Meizu MX4. But I am not sure about some points.
I can buy from China, but it will be Chinese model not global market model. Global market model is much more expensive.
So what are the differences beween these 2 models? I will use it in Europe, hence can I use both models or I do have to buy the global version.
There is also a watch accesorry for MX4, do you have any details for the watch?
Do anybody know how to get this dark theme and these quick toggles, that have no text label below?

I really doubt that you will get a huge amount on custom Roms for this phone, maybe CM, but when? This phone is designed for enjoying fast interaction, for taking nice photos, for playing in high resolution... but not for flashing Roms... Blame mediatek for not releasing the source code. I really like this phone, but the unavailability of Roms is a no go for me...
"Droidfish test" on Meizu MX4
@TheJackall @supercowz @Hwoarang04 ...everyone
Could someone 'benchmark' MX4 with Droidfish?
It could be 'top' with its MTK6595...
1) Install Droidfish on play. google:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.petero.droidfish
2) Clear all apps in background (hold home and swipe them away) and then run droidfish.
3) Press the menu button, invoke "Settings", choose "Threads" and select "Automatic", and then press back button to get back to chess board.
4) There is button with label "M" below chess board. Press it and choose "Analysis Mode". Analysis will start. Keep it running for about 1 minute.
5) After 1 minute passed, read and record the "knps": number at bottom of the screen. This is the measurement I'm interested in. This value is a number of positions searched per second (in thousands). The higher the better.
6) IMPORTANT: To force program to STOP thinking, press "M" button again, choose "Two players" so that analysis will stop. Post the results here with rom information (optional). Stock rom is preferable but other roms are welcomed.
Thank you!

Yes, you're right, but will the Exynos of MX4 PRO release the source?
And why mediatek or any other cpu/soc producer for smartphones will not release the source code?I mean if they release the code there will be more custom stuff and it will be a good point for a smartphone android.

I have been considering one of these from eBay.
I was wondering if anyone could advise if the Exnos version had any disadvantages over the snapdragon version?

I believe Note 4 folks with the Exynos version were having worse battery life than those with the Snapdragon.

Thank you! It's things like that I am worried about. I am very pleased with my Note 4 battery life. It's so much better than my Note 3 was.
I'll check out the thread on Note 4 section.
Regards.
i have heard a lot of times the exynos is the better one (not sure about battery life). the sellers all look like they are reputable sellers let us know guys if you get yours without hassle

The exynos version does not support the US LTE. That's why there are 2. My understanding is that the exynos version is much faster and smoother, but battery drain is significant, while the snapdragon has better battery, LTE but you loose some of the smoothness if the device. I have been watching these auctions as well......

I am in UK, do you think there might be any compatibility issues?
I also read that the exynos version does not support fast charging? Can you confirm this?
The Japanese version reviewed by Android Authority claimed to have extreme battery drain issues too.
how much total? let us know your thoughts about it when you get the unlocked korean version

You will be fine with the exynos version. That is the version that the UK uses for there processors. Its different bands/signals so that's why it is different. Some reason Samsung hasn't gotten theres to play nice with our LTE. Let me know your thoughts on arrival
Hi guys,
I am about order this Note Edge from ebay. I have decided to go for the Octa Core chip. This device is a Korean version, and I have a fews concerns which I was hoping someone would be able to clear up for me before placing the order:
- Would there be any issues if I wanted to put in a international rom on the phone when available?
- Would I receieve over the air updates?
- Would there be any limitation in using this in the UK?
- Anything else I need to be aware of?

Many thanks in advance!

- You will have all required bands running for your area. That is the right version.
- so this answer is a two part, if your putting a custom ROM, then no you will not have access to over the air updates, but even still keeping ng stock using the Samsung Kids so ftware will get you the required updahelps!now putting a custom ROM, you must and I mean MUST make sure that when putting/choosing a ROM you are choosing the ROM that goes with YOUR model, if not you could risk bricking the device. These ROMs won't be readily available until there are a few out and have had the time to be made. The model is very important because if the chipsets and radio bands and firmware.
Hope this helps!

Not sure if there will be units on Amazon.
Samsung has announced that they are only releasing 1million units. While that seems like a lot. There have never been any amounts listed as to where they are going. I spoke with a rep here locally who said he is hearing that there will be 100 thousand units to be given to the big 4 carriers(sprint, Verizon,att,T-Mobile) each. That puts us at 400thousand. Depending on what is given out of the US and other small carriers.
I'm curious to see if best buys, Sam's, Costco, radios shacks, etc... Will have any as well.
Price has gone up and up today. I guess they're getting enough buyers. Hope it goes down again, more than I'd pay.

I have placed my order! It cost £799.99, this was the counter offer I received from the seller.
This same device is now showing £1000. The est delivery date is showing between 6-7 November. Can't wait!
I also feel extermely guilty for spending so much money so soon after splashing out on Note 4...
I wish I could also order the flip case but just could not spend another £40. I will also still have to pay custom charges once it arrives.
avenging,
thank you!
Fatila,
It had the same message on the description for the Edge, so hopefully it should work.
Lol welcome enjoy it when u get it

I am a bit concerned to read that there are some limitations on Korean imports with the SMS APP. Apparently, it has a 80 character limit? And there might also be issues with some others apps...
Does anyone know if these issues still exists?
Thanks.

CONFIRMED! Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 IS NOT getting Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.

Hi. I own the 5.5' Idol 3 (6045Y).
This is just some information I received about three weeks ago and I just wanted to share it.
This is the official response that I got from the Alcatel One Touch team on Facebook.
I was thinking about buying the idol 3 (despite the many reviews where the laggy performance is mentioned, which is somewhat true).
Nevertheless, I bought it. For the price it has some unbeatable specs which don't quite perform as they should due to lack of optimization. If they did, this device would be excellent. Moto G (3rd gen) is the perfect example of a well optimized device which is a serious downgrade in specs compared to the Idol 3, but performs slightly better. I know because I own them both.
Still, what I was hoping for THE MOST with the Idol 3, since this is considered Alcatel's flagship model, were at least a couple of system updates. At least one for Lollipop 5.1.1.
However, now according to their official response, we're not getting that, not to mention something like Marshmallow 6.0.
I mean, even the Moto G is getting that for Christ's sake!
Very, very poor customer care. I was maybe even expecting this to some extent. But I was hoping that this brand wised up with this device.
However, Alcatel remains Alcatel, if you know what I mean. But hey, at least they were honest enough with the response.
So, there it is. Maybe this will be of some use for future buyers to think about.
P.S. I'm new to XDA and I'm posting this thread from the desktop but I can't find any option to attach the messages screenshots. If someone could tell me how to do that, that'd be great. Thanks.

I wouldn't trust Alcatel customer support to tell me what day of the week it was. There have been multiple occasions where they have told folks on this forum things that ended up being blatant lies. When I first placed my order I tried to cancel it 1 hour after I placed it because I was charged shipping where it showed free shipping...I planned to simply cancel and re-order..something that should have taken 5 minutes...I spent a week going back and forth with Alcatel telling me I needed to cancel the order with amazon even sending them screenshots showing amazon would not allow me to cancel the order and the only reason it ever was "resolved" was that the stupid thing finally shipped after a week.
Actually I can confirm TCL is working on Marshmallow for the Idol 3, the bad news is it won't be released until the end of this year.

I hope you're right. How did you confirm it?
I got Marshmallow on it right now, I trust this custom rom more than TCL that makes me factory reset after every update.
Yeah, I would do research and get answers from more than one source. Before saying that Alcatel is not working on a 5.1.1 update. The person who replied on Facebook is just one source. I would email Alcatel support and see what they say when they reply. Of course this would depend on the knowledge of the person who replies, and if he/she speaks with the people that create the updates for the Idol 3.

Source within TCL that told me initially that they would release 5.1 but later announced they canceled their plans for 5.1 to go directly to 6.0. anyway, I prefer to wait a bit and get a really stable marshmallow rom than a somewhat buggy 5.1. most memory leaks and performance issues have been ironed out in 6.0.

You say you have Marshmallow running right now - I am assuming you have a custom ROM - so I have a question for you - Are you able to use Android Pay with your custom ROM on your Idol3 ? Android Pay has become one of the major uses for me with my new device - and I am trying to find out if it would still work if I rooted the device and put on a custom ROM. I have heard otherwise, but since you already have a custom ROM on this device, maybe you can clear this up for me.
TIA

Google does not allow custom roms to include GAPPS (Google apps) which includes google play etc...however there are various "GAPPS" available...paranoidandroid produces one for each version of android for instance...so it's a simple matter of flashing the rom first...then gapps.

I know I can flash gapps separately from a custom ROM - I have done it many times before. But this is not merely about flashing gapps and getting the Android Pay app on to the phone. It has been widely reported that Android Pay does not work on rooted devices. I am just looking for confirmation from someone that has this device and already has a custom ROM on it.
Alcatel/TCL support for update is totally poor... For every single model...
So I don't believe it will get 6.0
Too bad cause Idol3 5.5 is good phone and with specs could handle 6.0...

Given that no custom rom's have been made PUBLIC-ALLY available you'll probably have to wait a while for an answer. Google Play comes with the stock Rom and works fine. Best I can tell you for now.

Android Pay can work on a rooted device but not without some workarounds and not an all devices. I know this is vague but you can Google a workaround posted on Reddit.

No, Google will not allow it to work on rooted devices for security reasons.

I wouldn't mind at all waiting a couple more months for Marshmallow 6. It's just that since I got the response from their official facebook page about not planning to update even to Lollipop 5.1 I remain sceptical about 6.0.
Anyway, I really hope then that you're right and I'm wrong.
Can you post a screenshot of their answer?

I disagree with this post.
If you look at at the amount of Android phones out there, being upgraded to the latest (non-security) Android OS is the exception to the rule. That is why I had a Nexus phone prior to the Idol 3. Comparing a Motorola phone to an Alcatel phone is insincere as well because Google bought (and then later sold) Motorola, so in terms of treatment for updates, they get specialized treatment.
