[Q] Rooting a TF300T Help please - Transformer TF300T General

Hello
This site is bewildering, to say the least with so much information that my little furry brain is going pop.
I have a TF300T which is only days old and I'm considering rooting it but I don't know where to go for my research for fear of buggering up the device.
As far as I know from reading various threads the build number is important and, if I am looking in the correct place mine is .26
Could somebody please point me in the right direction?
I was going to start the rooting game with my Samsung Ace phone but the thread I found on this site had links to files that no longer existed, probably because they are now obsolete.
Cheers

If I did a factory restore, would that put me back to .17?
Like a fool, I updated my shiny new toy as soon as I got it out of the box.

AFAIK factory reset doesn't do change your firmware. You will have to downgrade following the link posted before.

I know that this may sound like a daft question, but is downgrading a bad idea?
I only ask because after researching how to soft mod my Wii, I got loads of advice saying that downgrading a wii was a bad idea. Now I know that a Wii and a Pad TF300T are two different beasts but they both have the potential for me to screw them up.

as long as you follow the instructions in the downgrade/root thread you will be fine.
Also, questions should go in the Q+A forum, or in the thread specific to what your question is about.

You will only be downgrading for a little while to get root, after you get root and back it up you can upgrade to the latest firmware (.29) with no problem at all.

So that I don't make a ****-up could I please confirm the following. My build number is IML74K.WW_epad=9.4.3.26-20120416
Am I right in assuming that I have build .26
And that I need the WW blob file?
Cheers

Yes, you are.

I have a Firmware update ready and waiting for me to install.
If I intend to root my Tablet, is it a good idea to hold off the Firmware?
Or is it a wise option to update asap?

hold off from updating anything until you fully understand the downgrading possibilities/process and what could go wrong with that.
.17 is where u want to be for Root.

Reading the tutorial there is a lot to enter into a shell. When there is a lot of stuff, such as three lines worth of code/script do I cut and paste the whole lot in one go?
Or do I cut and paste one line at a time?
My next question is, do I use method 2 or method three for my UNrooted TF300T?
Cheers

As stated in the guide you can use method 2 or the oneclick downgrade. If you aren't too sure on adb just go for the oneclick downgrade. Please read the guide cautiously and take your time no need to hurry.

The oneclick downgrade is the easiestway. Just make sure your rooting for the right reasons. So many ppl ask "what do i do now?"

Kind of sucks that the one-click script is Windows only. But using the command line isn't difficult, and I'm more than familiar with Linux since it's the main OS I use. Still was hoping the "script" would be multi platform and run through ADB shell, not a separate Windows program.
Anyway, if you choose to manually perform Wolf's second method, you put each line in one at a time. You could put them all in at once, but there's a certain way to do it, and most people would stick to one line at a time anyway.

Yeah one line at a time is fine, there's only three semi long ones so it is easy

Yes. You need a .17 WW blob => But, its not available (anywhere).
So you can use a US Blob .17 => But it won't OTA update on WW models.
So basically you have 2 choices.
Rooted .17 US
Or
UnRooted .26 or .29.
Pick and choose.

thod a bit too much

I may be confusing this ROOT idea from what it is actually for. All I want to do is make an exact copy of my OS which I can revert back to if I ever have any problems such as a bad update or a virus/malware issue.
I have found this method or approach very useful in a microsoft environment to problems or if I just wanted to try an new OS such as Linux and then revert back to Windows 7.
I also notice a lot of stuff in the Google Play site that needs ROOT such as firewalls and AV protection.
Am I wanting to go down the ROOT path for the right reasons?

There is no way to get a full backup of your firmware with installed apps and data. On the other hand, there is always the option to revert to factory default with any installed firmware. (hold power button + volume down on startup).
Is it wise to get root ? Only if you need it.
Rooting is just a way to get superuser rights, allowing to run apps beyond the protected boundaries existing in an unrooted environment.
So if you don't need / run apps that require that, there's absolutely no reason to root your device.

Hi Guys, ive had my A500 for a couple of weeks now and i love it -------- im a Tablet/Computer DUMMY, can you PLEASE tell me what is "ROOTING" ?
I ask as ive read a lot about it on here and wonder if i should do it.
I will give you a different view then some I would imagine. My answer is do not bother with "Rooting".
In short, it gives you access to the files you would not normally see or need on a normal usage basis.
I would suggest you continue to use the A500 as is with out rooting it until you either find the device simply does not function as you want, or you continue to read the threads and decide you wish to try it out.
Having said that and is found in another thread simply rooting is not dangerous. But, I would say if you are new to computers/tablets that little value would be added to your experience so simply enjoy your A500.
Thankyou for your reply

once you downloade the file click and install the apk from you file manager

reboot to recovery and install what ever rom you like
Rooting grants you access to system files you would not normally have access to.
If you don't know what it is, or don't know what the risks are, I wouldn't recommend doing it ... But I can't stop you from rooting

rooting
This gives you access to operation system files. Rooting your device is a must to get access to advance setting and change the way your tablet functions. First some reasons to not root
1.you avoid your warranty
2.you make your system easily available for mistakes to cause it to no longer being usable.
reasons average users root
1.can install advance control apps
2.can do complete backups thou not really need if you are not root access
3.hacks like the Netflix fix.adding ad-hoc support for tethering to phone
DO NOT ROOT UNTIL YOU DONT HAVE TO ASK THERR SIMPLE QUESTIONS
With that said all the answers are here in this forum.thanks to all the wonderful developers and advanced users.
Good luck. Empower yourself for a better android experience.

While I am not a dev, I have spent a great many years around *nix systems. Rooting, in itself, is not difficult nor dangerous. The danger is in the new abilities to modify system parameters which should be left alone by those without sufficient knowledge. Acer has provided a utility to allow for system restore and some backup abilities which should be sufficient for most new users. With android, as with any OS, knowledge is power. I usually suggest new users gain knowledge about the system before tampering with root.
I am new to the acer community but some of you may have seen me on the nook color or huawei s7 forums and I am starting development work on the webos forums. As I said before, I am not a dev (yet) but I believe everyone should understand a concept before blindly rushing into the fray.
I will get off my soapbox now and go play. Enjoy your new acer...

3.2 Korean 10.1 Gtab in hand. What do you want to know?

Just received my gtab today. Updated to 3.2
Seems there are a lot of people curious about it so I'm here to help, or try to at least.
Notes:
1. I do NOT have windows. Running on a 64gb ssd mac so I wont be able to be bootcamping. I may have access to a windows PC here and there but my response may be slow.
2. I am on Korean time, so please be patient if I do not respond quickly.
3. I am an android/tablet/rooting NOOB. You must explain some of your complicated requests thoroughly.
Quick question. Can I root this baby? I heard installing rooting somehow messes up the screen for recovery mode.
*Added picture of settings
*Added picture of apps (in case you wanted to see what the korean version has to offer)
Random things:
1. For those saying pen memo is slow/horrible on 3.1, it is still slow/horrible on 3.2. I tried sketchbook mobile and my galaxy s2 is way more responsive.
Thank you for the awesome support, let me see the hope of 3.2. Waiting for developers wake up to see this.

d4mn...why some people get 3.2 update? hopefully samsung will release the update to all tab version..
We need you to use ADB to copy out the /system folder. Don't worry, the /system folder won't have any of your personal information in it. You don't need root to do this. The instructions are above, but the command is slightly different on mac. Let us know if you need help doing it - there are plenty of us that are good with ADB that can help out.
Samsung is so annoying. I would be happy with them if they just leaked these updates more effectively.
forget about samsung, that's what is great about xda, you can get early or unreleased versions thanks to all the great developers.
Aigoya, can you post a rom dump for us to mess around with? Then we can see if the standard root will work.

My mac isn't detecting my tablet with the steps that I followed. Pretty sure this is why people have been avoiding macs when rooting. I'll have to find a windows computer... somewhere...
Just download terminal emulator that's how I did to get a dump a dev required once
So just type your commands on terminal emulator and then just connect to your mac via remote wifi to extract the file and done
You don't need adb

Well, I'm avoiding root right now as I know that booting in recovery mode for the korean models has scrambled/unstable screens.
I attempted to pull the system from a windows computer but the PC wouldn't read my tablet. I dled the usb drivers from samsung page model for the model GT-P7510MAVXAB. (I couldn't locate any usb drivers from the Korean samsung m380w page. It only has a manual). And it wouldn't read the tab =|
Thanks for the attempts brother. Task650 posted up his 3.2 rom in the development section.

A Root Exploit Idea

Now I have never actually created an exploit for rooting a device, but I had an idea about one, as I have a general gist about it. I don't know if this is what RazorClaw did, but surely something can be done with Asus App Backup? Seeing as it has read and write access to apps, is there the potential to add a backup that will install root in some way?

First of all, RazorClaw is the only option for SBKv2, and it was fixed in the latest update.
To the OP:
RazorClaw was used to invoke root user access, then remount /system as rw, and add Superuser, plus the matching su binary.

I would say it is pretty likely that Asus will continue to close root exploits as they are discovered. Especially so for ones that can be done via an installed app, as malicious apps can (and have in the past) make use of this with ill intent
That's fine, as I am sure I wouldn't update as quickly next time. I only did because it was on 3.1 and I had just got it and noticed huge lag on keyboard and device. Wanted to make sure it was updated, but didn't realise it was an Apple style mouse game of closing exploits!

1) What is the difference between the android market and the google "app store" that I keep seeing people refer too?
a) what is the reference to "HC" in this quote?
- I have purchased apps from the android market that I would like to keep. I followed some references in other threads and got the Titanium Backup (free version) in hopes that I can backup the entire tablet. Is this what I would use to keep my apps/data and bring it back to the tablet after rooting?
2) I also got the Acer Recovery app. This looks as though it is used to bring the tablet back to stock form. Is that correct?
3) Is the term "root" in reference to gaining root permissions/access to the tablet, and nothing else? (I was under the impression that it was the installation of a ROM)
4) I have 3.2.1 on my tablet. It looks as though at this point in time, the only way I can root is to bring it back to at least 3.2 ot less (reference to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227&page=11)

Ryan,
HC=Honeycomb (the version of Android that is currently on your tab).
No difference, in the name for market, some people just use a different term.
2. No it doesn't. It will install CWM which will make a backup of your current ROM which you can flash to go back to original.
3. Root allows you to install CWM which will in turn allow you to flash custom ROMs.
4. Yes you will need to downgrade first, make certain you have everything you need already downloaded and on your external SD card.
5. Read, READ, READ, READ, take notes, and follow instructions to the letter. We certainly don't need another "help, I bricked my tab" thread lol
1) No difference, Google Market/App Store yada yada yada.
a) HC = Honey Comb, it is Googles internal name for their OS from versions 3.x
- If you go to Settings - Privacy, put a check in the boxes for "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore". Doing this alone has been enough for Google to automatically re-install about 99% of my apps.
2) Acer Recovery makes it easier to install the various Recovery images. It does not alone help you get back to "bone stock", but it at least will re-install the stock Recovery image if and when you're ready to go back to the stock ROM.
3) Root is getting root access to the device, which is generally needed to install custom ROMs, so I could see the confusion.
4) Almost right, you'll need to bring it back to 3.0.1 first. Be sure to have already downloaded and installed at least Acer Recovery and IconiaRoot before downgrading, as the Market is flakey as heck when you downgrade to 3.0.1. I followed method 2 in that thread and had 0 issues.
5) Not needed, see my info after 1,a).

Do I need an additional SD card to be used for this process only?
I see that you are working on a version of your ROM for 3.2.1, shall I just wait to avoid problems?
#5 - I have been trying to read as many "brick" threads as I can in order to avoid them.

I did find the IconiaRoot thread by Thor. It looks as though this is the reason for bringing the version back to 3.0.1, true? Not to many usable answers to the questions asked in that thread, that are answered by the OP. I will try and search for people using it and starting their own thread.
This looks to be a Windows piece of software, maybe I can get it to run on my virtual box... or wine... . I guess I could try it on my work machine.
IconiaRoot is the app to actually use the exploit found to root the device and give you root access. Now, the reason for going to 3.0.1 is because the exploit was fixed by Acer is version 3.2. So, the downgrade is needed first so that the exploit is available to root your device.
OMG..
Your worse then most of my girl friends.. ITS ALL QUITE SIMPLE AND EASY
if you are on STOCK FROM ACER.. 3.2 OR ABOVE . you must DOWNGRADE TO GET ROOT..
The best way to do this to date seems to be in the past by Jimmy Dean.. there are links to his threads in nearly every recent bricked or threads similar to yours..
im guessing if you have looked at all the threads about being bricked and still do not understand how to do it..or scared to try .
DO NOT ATTEMPT
MAYBE you should ask a dev if you can send your tablet to them in the mail and them flash it for you.. Would be my best sugestion.. Everyone that flashes anything on there tablet or any ROM BASED Device takes the risk of bricking.. IF you have read other bricking related threads you will see people complain they fallowed all instructions and still ended up bricked.. Maybe to falt of there own they missed or maybe just luck of the Flash..
Good Luck and look for Jimmy Deans post in the d/load he gives a very detailed instructions with step by step pictures. as some of the others do as well..
Thanks for listening to me RANT About my opinion...

Not sure if you ranted to make yourself feel good or show how awesome you are. Either way, this is not my first time to the rodeo, and not my first time on a forum where there are people that want to constantly show how tough they are. I have seen your posts in other threads and know what to expect from you. Because I am new here, I will not use the language I am tempted to with you.
It is so cool that you feel great enough that you can give someone a hard time because they want to make sure they are prepared to do things right the first time. As opposed to the opposite. Maybe because they want to understand how things work and the syntax surrounding the protocol(s).
My opinion on your opinion is to STFU and kiss my ass. mkay?

Thought we were talking about tablets here ... this whole Jimmy Dean and Links givin me a hankerin for some breakmast
Give thanks to those who need it..
Thanks for such nice words.I do appreciate and value your opinion of me.
All im saying is that if you have read all the threads and post about bricked devices bad flashing stories and the threads on how to do it correctly.. That there is nothing more anyone can do or say to you about this.. Only other option is for someone to do it for you.. I did not mean to offend you in any way.
Its kinda unclear what you expected to get out of starting a thread stating that you read everything good and bad.. about flashing this tablet.. maybe the solution is to go to android sdk site and get better acquainted with the OS on a more personal level.. if you are still not understanding the process .
With that all said..
I do hope you accomplish what your trying to do.I also sent you a Thanks maybe it will make you smile and not be so hateful toward constructive criticize n.
Good Luck..

Ah, my mistake, I must have been confused by the meaning of "constructive criticism"
Apparently when you say:

That is meant in the most loving, helpful way. Right? I should have been happy with that response. I apologize.

Giggles im so sorry .. fix me some while your in the kitchen..
OK, erica_renee, I need to come back and give a real apology. I am having a hard day at work today and was looking toward learning a new process on my latest toy to give me a little relaxation. I just had a customer blaming my additions to the software as the cause of their problems. Not sure if you code for a living, but that is not a fun conversation.
Sorry if I was mean, I just want to learn and not be treated like an idiot. I just want to be as educated as possible before I make a move. I see to many people getting educated because they broke something.
Its all fine
I do understand what you mean..
NOPE im not in software development in anyway. I did back in the 80s own a local computer business so i know how customers can be.. As far as my past being mean and aggressive.. YES i think it was ,better to have someone dislike me then brick there device.. I have leaned alot about android thru the official android web development site.. Its alot of long winded boring reading.
all is kewl with me. I dont take this stuff personal.People including myself sometimes can become to agressive on forums. as its not really a face to face interaction..
anyway GOOD Luck...
xo xoxoxo
I got the itch for some breakfast also.
Erica, git in dere and whup me up sum vittles!!
IM So sorry TIMMY Dean
oops i feel so stupid i just realized i was having a bad blonde moment..

[Q] Root for US OTA 2.0

So I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there is no solution to root a TP that's already applied the 2.0 update?
I've tried the root methods already obtainable on here and they don't work. I'm guessing (more hoping) that someone is working on finding a solution.
Makes me sad. A co-worker updated it for me because "it said it needed to update it so I did it for you"... *sigh*
OTA2 removed the exploit unless you were already rooted and used Voodoo Rootkeeper to maintain root during the update. I haven't heard the outcome with regards to 2.5. I don't want to risk root so won't be updating unless it's safe.
2.5 is out ? which your version of tablet ?
16gb us. Was delivered last week.
Yeah, I didn't have it rooted before so yeah.
Either people like us find a way to downgrade or wait until a new exploit is found. The former seems easier but my knowledge of these things isn't very high...
Yeah, I'm not sure how to either. I'm good at following directions but when a "friend" upgrades your device for you...
As for downgrading, I don't think that'll be an option until someone finds a Lenovo rom flash utility.

2. 5 was not available to US last week. How did you get it? Supposedly it's still going through certification. 0086_US is 2.0. What version are you?
Oh hell.... I've been reading too many posts on the Lenovo forums. My apologies, I am running OTA 2.0 NOT 2.5. I will correct my first post and title.
I'm running ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_US.
Okay. Thanks. No worries, but was scratching my head, looking puzzled.
Haha! I can understand. I have that look a lot sadly. I appreciate you telling me as I had no clue as to what exactly I was saying.
Now, if anyone knows someone on the inside at Lenovo that could get the flash utility...
LOL If only.
And now we wait. Did NOT expect CM9 to come out so fast and be working so didn't care much for root otherwise. Oh well, that was my fault and I knew I'd lose root for the time being. Now I wait patiently, since the primary work of the developers now is making CM9 to work properly so w/e.
Why isn't there a way to downgrade the rom to 075? The tab has a recovery boot. If it could be downgraded, it could then be rooted , then updated.
No way to downgrade, unless you know something the rest of us are unaware of. There's a bunch of folks that either can't root at all, or took OTA2 before getting root/without preserving root. We've been told that there's nothing to be done for the time being.
I don't know how to do it, but I know that's how other tabs got around the problem. I only say it in case someone does.
AFAIK, the problem is the recovery's signature check.. if it recognizes that the update.zip to flash is older than the build actually installed, it won't install the new ROM.
Thanks. Noob enough that I couldn't explain it, just knew it doesn't work.

I wonder what it takes to defeat the check? There must be an update script that performs that check. Editing elements of the update script has been the key to other "can't be done" situations.

I'm going to keep putting forth suggestions instead of claiming something can't be done. Afterall, the point of this entire forum is to work togther to overcome obstacles.
While I don't know a lot about these things, if it could be done, it would have been. This forum is overflowing with posts from owners of all kinds devices asking how to downgrade their respective device so they can take root. It's not an uncommon request, and one that I have researched for another device, only to find the same answer. Hey if you find out how to do it, you'll make a fortune.
Two other tablets, the Flyer and the View downgrade to gingerbread, then unlock bootloader, then root, then update to honeycomb, then custom roms are applied. They got the idea from another tab, the Iconia, who got it from the Transformer . . .
I'm just trying to push good and bad ideas to someone with the skills. It's about not taking 'no' as an answer.
Here's the thread for Flyer/View:
