[HELP] My Note rebooted in to some wierd factory mode - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Could anyone with knowledge tell me if it is safe to reboot my Galaxy Note when this image is shown?
(see relevant images in the attachements)
A small history to this incident:
While I was at work my Note had started the "in car"-app (don't know what it is called, but it is activaded by voice I think). Which I found a bit odd, but I closed it down. After a few minutes the app started by it self again and at which point I decided to reboot my phone as some software was obviously screwed up.
Said and done I rebooted but instead of getting the regular boot my phone instead entered Factory Mode with the message "Downloading... Do not turn of target!!"
This of course scares me a bit so I haven't had the gut to turn it off or reboot.
Is this something that can be fixed or do I have to return it for service?

Mate, that's just "Download Mode" used for downloading new firmwares on the phone, used in Samsung services as well.
You access that by pressing Volume Down (or up, not sure) + Home + Power. Just pull out the battery and try to reboot it again. It's nothing to worry about, you might have hit the buttons by mistake or if not just some weird Note act-up...

Exactly. Nothing to be worried about there unless it keeps happening without interaction from you then there be something going on.

Oh. I feel a bit silly right now ^_^
Don't think I hit the "home"-button, but i'm starting to believe it's a bit messed up anyway since the "car"-app is starting by it self. it has happened a couple of times now. I'll wait and see if it happens again, and if so I'll try a factory reset.
Thanks for the quick reply!

That's a bit weird with the car-app, although part of the beauty of Android for nerds like me is solving bugs like that A factory reset should do the trick.
And if you're feeling brave and have plenty of time on your hands, you should start reading about flashing other ROMs, there are a lot of users here and guides who will walk you through it and explain everything you need Once you get something custom on your note, stock firmware will seem utterly unworthy
Best of luck solving your problem

I'm not that experienced with Samsung, and by the text on the phone I thought it could be bricked if I rebooted

Thank you!
I'll consider trying other roms when and if I get tired of the one Samsung provides!
Have just had it about two months, and coming from the HTC Wildfire this phone is a beast! ^_^

:/ I had an issue similar to this with the car mode constantly opening up, and it was thinking it was charging when it wasn't, it wouldn't connect to the computer via usb, etc. Ended up being a bad USB port but Amazon shipped me a new one for free. Hopefully that's not the case for you, but if it starts to get worse... ( I had mine for only two and a half months)

Don't fret just yet. Give it time so dat u strt undstanding ur fone
Remember these:
1) Press and hold Power button for about 10 secs to reset (its like a computer restart). Also called soft reset. U could do this when ur fone behaves unusually like hanging, draining too much batt, etc.
2) Vol up+Home+Power until u see the Samsung logo takes u to Recovery Mode. From here u may factory reset ur device. Also called hard reset. Do this when soft reset doesn't solve a small problem. Remember to make backups 1st.
3) Vol down+Home+Power brings u to Download mode. U may use this when u need to flash a ROM urslf (once u have read ample info abt it, be warned)
4) Two other ways to hard reset ur device:
a) Select Settings>Privacy>Factory data reset
b)From ur dialer, enter just key in *2767*3855#

Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do?

Just as i said - Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do? I can no longer slide the lock across the screen. i have tried to flash the ROM with the 1.66 official but i cannot because it tells me to unlock the phone. I cant! argh! I've pushed the little red button by the battery a couple of times as well as removed the battery. Any suggestions? The hard buttons allow me to answer a call but that's it. i recently turned on the lock for the phone (today in fact) but I've unlocked it several times since doing so before this happened.
Sounds familiar...
Sounds like it is the same problem I had, as well as a few others on this forum. Even after a hard reset, it still didn't work. According to other people here, the solution is to have the screen swopped out for a new one. I've actually just sent mine in today to get it sorted out.
Just curious - I've got a suspicion that environmental conditions may have a role to play in causing the failure. What is the weather in your area like?
Very nice here today. Sunny, mid 50s(f).
I bought this off of ebay. Do i just send it in to HTC?
Try a hard reset, and if it doesn't help then make sure you have an official ROM and send it to HTC.
a hard reset is the little red button next to the battery, correct? ive done that.
and i cant very well change the ROMs at this point now, can i?

I would really like to wipe it before i sent it in. i dont want all my info, etc going into someones hands i dont know. anyway to do that?
No, that's a soft reset. Hard reset is pressing the red button while holding both volume keys until you get the "Restore factory settings?" prompt (when the device is on), then following the onsceeen instructions. This is what you're looking for to erase everything, including any possible software bug that could have caused the issue.
If the touchscreen still doesn't work then, send it in.

No! A hard reset is:
- Turn phone off
- Press vol up and down at the same time and then press power button (hold vol)
- follow the instructions on the screen
Be aware, that all you data on the phone will get lost. I recommend taking out the SD for that as well. After that u r done. By what you say i assume, that you didnt flash a custom ROM yet, right ?
Thanks! that didnt work either though.
I just want my money back now honestly. This thing, as pretty as it is, is just too much trouble.
Sorry double post...
A faulty device can happen to anybody, just bad luck... can't count how many times it has happened to me as well in the past.
I heard that there is a batch of phones that have a faulty screen, other problems are that without pressing anything the phone still registers clicks, phone doesn't always detect the correct place of where you pressed and the screen not responding.
I have got this on my phone and have arranged a pick up from HTC to pick up my phone for repair, hopefully in a week or two it will come back with a brand new screen that works
Ive had it a couple of months now. Im not sure if i can deal with the lack of apps that my iPhone has, pandora and the like, and the fact that teh HD2 would every so often change time and even date and i cant get weather in places my iPhone can.
In short, i love the HD2 for its specs but i no longer trust it at all.

Help, my HD2 won't start after installing and removing banana game.

Hi, could you please help. I installed the banana game then realised that the game wasn't compatible with HD2 as the game was showin g only on 3/4 of the screen and thye sense was unstable. I removed the app and the device switched offf. Sinced the I haven't been able to turn it on all i get is the initial black screen wity the pink ring. It won't resen using up down method and task 29 wont work as it is unable to connect. can anyone help....
what "up down method" its not up then down lol if you want to hard reset turn youre phone off press and hold up and down volume buttons and turn the phone on you should get a grey screen then follow instructions, and task 29 will work if you can get in bootloader but why would you want to wipe the mobile if you dont no what you doing?
and the banana game doesnt really give us much insight does it lol

Hi Demon,
I am glad you find this funny but here I am in tears re: the situation. I meant vol up and down for hard reset but its not working bfore turn on. I chose the task 29 as I am desperate and willing to reset to default setting. I did try vol up and down before turning on my mobile and still not working. See below url for the game downloaded but I didn't downloaded from this site I used the omarket. thanks

what do you mean RGD screen, can you post a pic if you have a camera
try taking the battery cover off, and then press the vol up and vol down together, carefully. Make sure you feel the contact as you press it. I struggled at the beginning to make it wiork. the button isn't really meant to bend at both ends, so it feels like you have them both pressed, but dont.
Once you are confident that both ends are pressed, only then tap and release power to start the phone.
ALl being well, 5 or so seconds later the three coloured screen should come up.
Fingers x'd

I tried again and you are right just a tap on the power as before i think i was pressing too hard on the power button ....now I have a gray screen with the following:
This operation will delete all your personal data ......
What should I do now to avoid losing all data...
Thanks
ok, now dont take this the wrong way mate because everyone has done this, but you must be doing it wrong or not catching the buttons right, if you have someone with you, you're easiest option would be turn your phone on as normal take your battery cover off, press and hold both volume buttons and keep holding them, get someone to press the red button near the batter with a pin, that way you have hold of both volume buttons, keep holding them while the phone is restarting and you should get a different screen come up,
like i said its quite tricky to get it the first time.
you cant not loose anything this is youre only option im affriad, but youre phone will work again

hehe, its a bit of a three handed job. I usualy use a thumb on each vol button, and my top lip to press power, lol.
I think sadly your data is gone. I can't think of a way to save it if the phone wont boot.
Plus, if this banana thing did mess your phone up, you want to be sure its gone.
(A good lesson in syncing your data regularly )
If the hard reset doesn't work, then my next steps would be to task29 from bootloader (volume down and power, dont touch vol up) followed by flashing your stock rom over usb.

hi just wondering can you conect the phone via usb to pc does the pc read you r phone ?

HELP! Trying to help a friend out.

So a friend called me today and said he is having problems with his Vibrant and wanted me to come take a look at it. He explained that he flashed a rom and now everytime he boots it up, it gets stuck in a force close loop hell. I got there and verified that's happening and said that I could just flash him back to stock. Well, come to find out he's also hardware locked! I tried to figure out a way to enter safe-mode (have used this on my Mytouch but it had actual buttons to make this work) but it was no-go since it's capacitive. On top of all this, he doesn't have debug mode enabled and I can't get to the settings due to the force close loop and no working launcher/home. I couldn't get any adb commands sent to the phone due to no debug mode, so that means I can't even adb reboot into recovery. I spent almost 2 hours on it before I had to give up. Does anyone have any suggestions that I may have overlooked or not thought of?
Greatly appreciated! XDA has some of the smartest damn people around!

Yes, in fact I had that very thread open on my netbook as I was working on his phone. There's one (of many) problem with this:
"turn on USB debugging in Settings-->Applications-->Development"
As I stated in my OP, he doesn't have debugging turned on already, and I'm unable to get to it in settings because at startup it's in a FC loop and I can't get to settings either by holding MENU or using the launcher.
Is there another way to get to phone settings besides those two methods? How about going into safe mode? I've done that before with my MT3G, but it has hard buttons that facilitate this with ease. With capacitive, not so much. Is it possible to enter safe mode on the SGS phones with capactivie screen?
I seriously doubt this has stumped the brains of XDA!
Email me lets see if I could help
[email protected]
What do you think caused the force close loops? Was your friend tinkering with his phone? Did he install a lagfix? Are you doubly sure he's hardware-locked?Did you try Download mode?
Lots of questions...I had this problem once. It was due to the fact that installed Ryanza's early lagfix and tried to remove it. My phone had a force close loop, BUT I had enough patience to wade through the loops and in the very short gaps at which they appeared, I managed to navigate the phone into settings (~an hour). The moral is: Try very hard to get into settings and don't lose your patience.
You can try booting into safemode, maybe that will help. Just turn it off and when it powers on the second you see the animation start press and hold the home button.

From what I gathered, he tried installing the FrankenTwiz rom and something went wrong. He couldn't fully explain exactly WHAT went wrong, and so I'm coming into this whole thing without a lot of answers to help troubleshoot it. I know he's HW locked because that was the first thing I tried (recovery mode) and it's not able to get into it. When I fist got my Vibrant it was HW locked and the behavior is the same. I exchanged mine the next day for a non-HW locked. I tried every method to get into recovery/download mode but unable to. I remembered "safe mode" from my MyTouch 3G, but it needed the hard button (menu) pressed on bootup. Being capacitive screen, it doesn't respond the same way so I couldn't even use safe mode. He doesn't have USB debugging enabled and I can't get to settings to enable it due to the FC loop. I sat there pressing CLOSE a million times to find that "break" in the process to try and get to settings with no luck. Hope that answered everything.

That didn't work. I thought safe mode was MENU, not home? (btw- which animation? The tmo pink or the Galaxy S? Tried both an no result.)
Ok, figured out SAFE MODE!
Power up the phone and start pressing the capacitive buttons. As soon as they light up during boot up process, press and hold MENU & HOME all the way through until you see SAFE MODE appear in the bottom left of the screen. At that point you can release the buttons and you will now be in safe mode.
Now I just need to get in touch with my friend and meet up with him to try this. Hopefully it will break the FC loop from Hell and I can get into his settings to enable debugging mode.
**MODS - I didn't find how to get into safe mode anywhere in the Vibrant forums. Maybe it can be added to the Bible to help others? Thanks!**
That's new for me, mine goes holding the home key. Timing is of the essence though. I have to press and hold the second the S forms on boot.

I tried multiple times using your method and no dice. I get consistent results with my method (MENU + HOME), so not sure what to say...
Anyhow, it looks like he's screwed. Met up with him after work and even though I can get into safe mode, the TW Launcher is still going nuts, FC hell! Unable to get it to stop long enough to get to settings to enable debugging. He's going to put it on Ebay for parts. Dude had it for a week and is out $400. Feel so bad for him, but I guess it teaches him a lesson. If you don't know what you're getting into with flashing ROMs, better step back and either ask for help from someone with experience or just not attempt it at all. This was his first flash attempt and he crashed hard.

Found something cool

Check this out.. I have never seen this before or found anyone report it or talk about it.
If you, no matter where you are at on your Note 4, even works in Download mode, if you hold down the power button and the volume down button and keep it there, your phone will reboot, keep holding it until you see this new screen I have never seen before.
It's called the Maintenance Boot Menu !!
You can boot into Safe mode and factory reset, etc.. It is Not the recovery menu or obviously download mode..
Cool huh ??
Wonder if there is anything we can gain from this ??

Not that I could find. If you hold volume up button, power, and home button it will take you to factory recovery where you can wipe cache.
I also noticed that if you hold the return/back button, you basically get the edge's side curve without the curve xD I'm sure people knew this already, but I found out by accident last night haha
That feature might be bad if the device gets stolen though x:
Edit: is just shortcuts though d:
Safe mode basically disables all installed apps so if you are having a problem you can determine if it something you installed or not.

Hey, that's how we all learn my friend...
I could do it and try to figure it out but to save a needless reboot...I did what's quoted below a couple times to clean the cache. I am wondering what the OP's thing is besides less of what's below? I think I did the OP's thing once when I forgot the home button in the process below and I think all I saw was no clear cache option but most of the rest of what's below.

Greetings fellow geeks.
i have a problem with this i9500..
it was working fine, suddenly it resets.
it keeps resetting every 4 seconds.
won't let me go to recovery.
i can go to download mode. but it won't respond to volume button, and resets after 4 seconds.
i have a custom ram on it.
if i place a battery back in, it will power on and keeps resetting every 4 second.
what should i do?
Maybe your power button stuck in? But if you can enter download mode then not I guess. You can always flash original firmware if you haven't necessary data on it.

Ok sorry my friend, read that you can use download mode well. I think there is something with your power button. Did you drop your phone? It shouldn't reset every time in every state, that looks like hardware failure. You can easly open your phone with little screwdrivers, but you will lose your warranty. If your power button is broken you can always order new ones from China, I did it with $1,3 (power and volume).

100% your power button is stuck. Try to wiggle it lose or replace it.

TNX mate.
if i may say something, the button isn't stuck.. it's pretty clicky and sounds like working fine. is it possible the cause is coming from something else?

No it's your power button for sure.
I had that issue with my S3 LTE. It is indeed the power button since it does exactly the same that my did, try to use some alcohol in a swab and pass on the button (let it penetrate the button area, next click several times to try to clean the button from inside).
Good luck.

I have the same problem with my i9505, I always fix it like this:
1) remove the battery
2) let the phone rest w/o the battery for min. 10min
3) put the battery in and try to go in recovery
4) if you can wipe cache and try to turn it on
If the problem happens again:
1) remove battery
2) short the pins like this x/-/x/- , then x/x/-/- and then -/-/x/x (x is the connected pin) with something that conducts electricity like a metalic ring or high resistor or s/t
3) do step 3) from the previous one
(Anyways what you do is that you drain the capacitors in the phone, and on the power button, that capacitor is the main problem)
If that doesn't help, then try to leave it w/o the battery overnight
EDIT: well that is not a permanent fix, the fix is probably that you need a new power button, or in the worst case a new phone
