64Gb MicroSD card. - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I've received an installed my new SansDisk 64Gb MicroSD card.
Transferred some files into it in my desktop and had go with it in the 7.7.
It does not seem to be recognizing the card...Does not even appear as "External Storage" in "My Files"
For those of you who reported success using 64Gb cards, what's the file system in your card?...exFAT?
Thanks!
XK

Reformatted it as ntfs and install ntfsSd (thanks oyaxai for the great app!). You need root anyway.

I believe mine is formatted fat32. Can you try formatting it in the device?

Installed!...and WORKING !
Sweet, sweet, sweet...I can now see MKVs over 4GBs...
Thank you so much!

(EDIT: Victory claimed too soon, I am afraid... ntfsSd did mount the MicroSD successfully, initially...but them I unmounted and removed the card and copied all the content from my previous card into it, in Windows.
Now,ntfsSd won't mount the card, anymore.
Meanwhile, I've managed to get the 7.7 to recognize the card in exFAt, and reformatted it in the 7.7.
I think I'll leave NTFS alone for a while now...

I loaded a sandisk 64GB. Not sure what file system it was but it was detected as an external disk but not able to mount. Even USB Mass Storage Watcher app, which I love, could not mount it. This really annoyed me since I had spent a good 2 or so hours transferring files onto it via my laptop.
So I formatted it via the tab's settings, which I presume converted it to FAT. I have no problems now, but i also don't use mkvs that exceed the 4GB. I would be interested to hear other people's experiences with NTFS and if they are experiencing the same problems as Khan

Format as ntsf
How do you format it as ntsf? I'm not able to do this. The device automatically formats the SD as fat32.

This is an known issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22617892&postcount=13
- Once unmounted, even after you mount again manually,
Android OS don't detect the sdcard.
You can access it with file managers or other apps,

That means you may not want to unmount ever after. I know that is not the perfect solution you are looking for.
Also, for your information, 7.7 does not mount exFat (I might be wrong, inform me if you could). The first time you insert an exFat formatted sdcard, it would prompt for reformatting. Your card will be formatted into FAT32.

Yes, it is not very practical, that way...I'll forget NTFS until someone comes up with a more polished solution...now that it has been shown that HC can, indeed, work with NTFS it will be only a matter of time before a more comprehensive solution appears, be it for HC or ICS...I'll wait.
As for the remaining solution, this is my full story:
1. The card is a Sandisk MicroSDXC I Ultra (class 6). It is natively formatted in exFAT.
2. I took it right out of the box, put in the included adapter, inserted it in USB in my desktop, running Windows 7 and transferred some files.
3. Put it in the 7.7 and nothing happened. It was not detected by the system, no incompatibility messages, nothing.
4. I removed it from the 7.7 and tried to format it in the desktop PC. The only otpions Windows would offer were NTFS or exFAT.
5. I formatted it in NTFS and tried to use the card with the "Drive Mount" app in the 7.7. The app would detect and "force mount" the card but the 7.7 file manager wouldn't report it as existing (NOTE: I kept "Drive Mount" installed, as it can still be useful in the future, when using the USB feature to deal with my photo CF cards...This is the only area remaining for me to fully break-in my 7.7, as I am still waiting for the OTG USB reader to arrive).
6. Making good use of your pointer, I installed the "ntfsSd" app, with initial success, as reported. Then the problem in reference manifested itself.
7. I then reformatted the card back in the desktop PC, selecting exFAT as the file system but refrained from adding any content.
8. The 7.7 now recognized the card, displayed the system incompatibility message and I was able to evoke the format option from within HC. The tab reformatted the card in FAT32 and I am now using it with no further problems.
9. So, the thing is (...if I understood it correctly...): When getting a new 64Gb card insert it directly into the 7.7, without using it anywhere else first. It can recognized a non-compatible file system but it won't recognize the very same file system if there's already any content on the card.

[Q] Sd issues. a500 not recognizing sd card

Hi all. I have a stock a500 with 3.1. Not rooted. I put in the 16gb SD card with files in it and I don't get any indication of the card in the bottom right corner. My phone however will recognize it and the files that are on it. Any suggestions? Ty for any replies
"Try unplugging it, and plugging it in again" - Mistabishi 'Printer Jam'.
What FS is the card formatted to? Have you tried any other card that is known to work? Also, try formatting the SD as FAT32 again from the phone.
I am having the SAME issue on my acer. It wont recognize my 16gb sandisk card. I tried formatting as described and I tried another card. Both are showing up in my HTC inspire but nothing on the acer. Whats the deal? When I go to storage in settings- the external SD total space is recognized but it is not allowing me to access it for storage using app2sd?
this SD card worked just fine on the transformer I took it out of.

Are you even able to see the SD card? check /mnt/sd-external to see if it shows up. If it's there, create a directory, then delete it. Also, check the ".android-secure" hidden directory that should be on the SD card after using app2sd. If the permissions are not set correctly, you won't be able to use app2sd with it (reason for create/delete of the directory). Sidenote, I've seen quite a few apps named app2sd, some of them listed are showing up on my end as non-working with the A500 where others listed should work fine.

Still, that does not give me anything to go on. Did you format the card again? Is the card formatted in FAT32? Have you tried formatting the card from your computer using a card reader? I've had SD cards not show up before, reformatting them correctly solved the issue each time. If you don't know what filesystem the card is formatted with, grab a LiveCD with gparted on it (almost any gnome distribution) and I can help you from there. I haven't used Windows since XP SP2 was first released (FCKGW-... if you know what I mean) and I have refused to touch anything Apple since the IIe. Hence the signature.

Not sure what format they are in. I used a thunderbolt to for mate and a fsscinate and neither were visible. I'll go check what you recommended above though.
What are you guys talking about?
To the OP: You won't have any indication at the bottom. That feature doesn't exist on our devices (but some custom roms based on xoom and ?ASUS? have it). Just check the System screen to see if it finds your sd or simply make a photo from your camera (just set it to save the pictures to your SD). Or use a program and check /mnt/external-sd
To da9b16: a2sd won't work on this device (besides it has enough internal memory).
You'll only be able to access SD directly from your internal memory if you root the device and use a program that creates a symlink from /mnt/external-sd to /sdcard (USB Mount All does this but it's not free) or if you simply navigate to /mnt/external-sd with a file explorer.
I hope that this clears some confusion.

HOW TO - 64GB exFAT SDXC card ruined by Cyanogenmod - how to get data back

I am writing this n00b friendly howto for anybody who will encounter similar problem that I had, since I couldn't find much info how to solve it on this forum.
Recently I have flashed CM9 and later CM10 preview on my Galaxy S3 I9300 with 64 GB Sandisk SDXC card. The card was formatted in Samsung stock ROM, so naturally, it was formatted as exFAT. CM9 and CM10 reported it as "damaged SD card", but this was expected, since open source AOSP ROMs do not support exFAT. However, when restored to original stock ROM via CWM recovery, the stock ROM was showing "damaged SD card" error, too! Not sure why this has happened - the only info I found was someone mentioning that "CM9 is known to do this on exFAT cards" on this forum.
Connecting the card (via adapter and card reader) to computer didn't help - it showed as a RAW partition, Windows was asking to format it and even reported incorrect size. Trying about 7 different open source and commercial recovery tools did not help. However, if booted to recovery mode, CWM could see the card just perfectly!
So this is how to get the data back:
1. Boot to CWM recovery mode (power off the phone, then hold Volume Up-Home-Power buttons for 5 sec)
2. When in CWM recovery mode, connect phone via USB to computer. The phone should be recognized and drivers installed (if not already).
Note: I had problems with Windows recognizing the phone in recovery mode on some PCs (only 1 out of 3 worked, actually). To solve this, installed drivers from Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit (first step after toolkit installation) and problem gone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
3. Run adb command (from Android SDK platform tools) to ensure that the phone is visible to operating system - it should show serial number of the device and "recovery" next to it:
adb.exe devices
4. Browse the phone to find the location of sdcard (mine was /sdcard):
adb.exe shell
Note: when first time connected to phone via "adb.exe shell", running "ls" in /sdcard directory came out empty. Had to "exit" from shell and do "adb.exe shell" again.
5. Pull the files from your device using "adb.exe pull" command:
adb.exe pull /sdcard c:\temp
replace /sdcard with your sdcard directory on the phone (if different) and c:\temp with other folder on your PC, if you wish.
That's it! After files are copied, reboot to stock ROM and reformat the card. You can now copy all data back to it from your PC!
Now I'm trying to find a way to format the card to FAT32. Seems not so straightforward with 64GB cards!
Sincerely,
satanxda

I had the same problem. From stock went to CM10, exFat got corrupted and then went back to Stock still external storage card showed as damaged.
I took the SD card out and put in adapter and then connected to PC. Then from command prompt ran chkdsk <Drive_Letter:> /f and it fixed the errors without me copying the files to PC.
Hope this helps.
And to format 64GB sd card from exFAT to FAT32, use guiformat tool or EaseUS partition master. I have formatted my card to FAT32 using EaseUS partition master.

With this problem you can restore data in more easily way.
Insert your SDcard in CardReader, connect to PC, run Command line (cmd) and type:
chkdsk X: /f ,
where X is your card volume name. After operations is complete, you can use you card again and NO data had been lost.
Sorry for my bad english.

Tried it before posting this howto, but EaseUS didn't see the card at all. Windows disk manager in the meantime reported incorrect size (27 GB for a 64 GB card) and when formatted with guiformat I got a 27 GB partition. Could be a problem with card reader - will try another one as soon as I get my hands on one ;]
mahendra1020, magicm3n: in my case using chkdsk was not possible, since Windows showed the SD card as a disk with not formatted RAW partition (suggested to format it). To run chkdsk, partition type must be recognized.
And by the way, thanks everyone for comments and suggestions!

Yeah even in my case windows showed sd card as not formatted but chkdsk still works.
Try /f instead of /r as arguments for chkdsk.
Are u formatting as fat or fat32? For me both the tool worked.

Probably you are right. Checkdisk button was disabled for me when right-clicking->Properties on the drive, but anyway Windows was reporting wrong size of the card, so I didn't want to risk forcing repairing and didn't invest too much time to that. But as I said, maybe it's the problem of my quite old SD card reader
By the way, successfully formatted from exFAT to FAT32 by using this Android tweak to mount the SD card as USB Mass Storage device on PC (so basically turning the phone itself into a card reader) and formatting in Windows with guiformat:

And did you get CM10 to read all of the 64 gigabytes?
For me CM cannot read the SD card over 32 gb.
Formatted my 64gb SDCard using EASEUS Partition Master to FAT32.
CM9 recognizes all the 59GB+, reads and writes on the card just fine. Didn't install CM10 yet, so don't know if that will work...
FWIW; the Chkdsk /f command did fix mine, and just as well, cause nothing I did (on multiple machines) could get the darn thing to mount in CWM.
yep, chkdsk does fix my 16g exFat card, and it works back just fine now. and before, i tried the CWM way twice, nothing i could pull up, os hints "remote object '/sdcard' not a file or directory"
I've had the same issue, and am really struggling to get anywhere at all with it...
I tried the method in the first post, but running ls on /extSdCard just gives an empty directory...
When I mount it in a reader in windows, it reports zero size and a 'please insert disc into Removable Disc (E: )' when I try and open it...
Even when I just threw my hands up and said 'ok phone, format it' it just says 'unmounting SD card' and then just backs into the normal screen.
At my wits end with this, I suspect the card might be fried, but want to get in if possible as it has my only stock backup!

hmm, well storage isn't part of the structure when is run ls after using 'adb.exe shell'
tried it anyway, get 'can't cd to /storage/extSdCard'
interestingly, when I try and get into just the 'sdcard', which I guess is just the internal storage?
I run 'cd sdcard' and the folder that I get into is /data/media
this is confusing, anybody any ideas?

Please add this simple info to the OP!
P.S.
Windows 7 said the volume is in use and if I wanted to dismount it before it would allow to continue checking/fixing it. But at the end it worked perfectly!

Thank you for this guide. Help me get all my data of my "Damaged" 64GB sdxc card
I have the same issue. Flashed CM10 M2 on my tmobile S3, got the error that SD card is damaged, restored stock image from backup, and I'm still getting the bad SD card error. I'm using CWM 6.0.1.2 and mounting the external SD failed. I don't see the contents when I connect through ADB. Mounting sdcard from CWM mounts /sdcard but that is the internal storage which is not what I want. I also tried connecting the card to my laptop running XP using a micro-SD card reader and running chkdsk but that reported the disk as a RAW partition. Any ideas on what else I can do to copy files off of the card?
The method mentioned in OP worked for me, using a macbook air with mountain lion and android sdk for adb installed.
After mounting the external sdcard in cwm and copying the files via adb I partitioned the sdcard (sandisk 64gb sdhx) with the inbuild harddiskmanager in mountain lion. You have to choose FAT (MS-DOS), it will choose fat32 automatically. After partitioning and formating the sdcard the card is recognized under cm10 and samsung firmwares.
OSX has no 32gb limit on fat32.

64GB MicroSD Card - The how-to guide!

As you all hopefully know, the Note Can take up to 64GB MicroSDXC cards. But, what you may not know is the trouble that with comes with getting one to work. Its actually relatively simple When you know how to do it. l spent hours tonight trying to do it.
Originally the sd will probably be in the NTFS format created by Microsoft, which is understandable since its the biggest OS on computers.
Upon entering your SD onto the device, you should see that it wants you to format it. This is due to android not supporting NTFS. The only structure it supports is FAT32.
But, here's where your options come in! You have the choice of either making your device NTFS compatible (Note that this requires root), or reform making the storage device to FAT32. As my device is not yet rooted to test the NTFS support, l will only go over the reformatting process. Unfortunately, since I'm a new member I can't post links. Therefore, you'll need to trust google to guide you to what you want. But if you want to use the tool I used just Google "Kioskea HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"
Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any damage that you Cause to your device, computer or SD card while carrying out this method. It is your own decision to do this. This method should cause no harm to any system health, but, as with anything on a computer, errors can occur. Also, take note that the more you format something, the shorter its life will be.
Insert your SD card into the computer to format it. To format to FAT32, you will need to download a third party partition program, as windows withdrew the ability to format to FAT32 in an attempt to push more people on to NTFS. Only storage mediums with FAT32 as their default can format to it.
Once you've downloaded and installed the software, load it up and select your sd card and FAT32, as well as quick format then start. You should then insert it into your PHONE as the tablet doesn't seem to do this next step correctly. When inserted into your phone, it should say that the sd needs formatted. Do this then eject it and transfer it to your tablet and say yes to the dialogue that appears. And that's it in a nutshell! This can be applied for every android device possible.
Users report the newer note 10.1 updates will format 64gb cards into exFat which will allow for files bigger the 4gb (like HD movies).
Yes, i can confirm that if you update to the pulled ota update firmware, your tablet can format the 64gb sdxc to exFat and be read.

@Itchiee I'd seen reports of updates being able to support 64GB cards but that's all I was able to find. I only just got my Note 10.1 and it says on both the internal update and update via Kies that my tablet is up to date. Although, I am from the UK that may be why. I assumed my tablet was rolled out with the latest update. I tried exFAT on my tablet and it refused to work and was throwing the same error's at me.

@vndnguyen I recommended the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" as compared to the standard Windows one as Microsoft pulled formatting support for anything except exFAT and NTFS. The only time Microsoft will let you format to FAT32 is if it was the native of that device, such as a flash drive. So, the difference between the two programs, is that the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" can format to FAT32, as where Windows cannot.

This is because the native format of 32GB MicroSD cards and below were FAT32. Like I said, if the device is native FAT32, then Windows will allow a format of that.

Sorry for not replying in my last post. I never seen your comment. There's some slight differences between FAT32 and exFAT. The main difference a common user should know is that FAT32 can only hold, and transfer a maximum of 4GB, as where exFAT does not have a size limit. That's why it's the "preferred" method. But, FAT32 is more popular as it's been around longer and is supported by more platforms than exFAT. If you want to know more about the differences, try a google search. Unfortunately I can't post links just yet to help you out with that. But, I'd recommend trying the exFAT wiki page. The stuff you'll find can get fairly technical. Just a heads up.
thanks for your reply, the sandisk card i am getting says its been made for android devices, will that means its probably already in the exfat format when i get it?

This appears to be the same one that I ordered. Mine came as NTFS but it may have just been a hiccup for mine as everyone else is apparently exFAT. One thing I also noticed is that the page says it is both class six and class 10. Just to clarify - It is class 10.

Yeah some require root. I tried some today, as well. They don't work due to the memory config. Seems to be happen to all new releases, as if they're trying to block stuff like that. With all the trouble Google and manufacturers are going to to stop us rooting and stuff like that, Android will soon be as non-combustible as iOS!

This is because Samsung claim that their Note 10.1 can support exFAT. In reality, the support for it doesn't work at the moment. What you will need to do is reformat it to FAT32, and it should work. If it still doesn't work after this, put the SD into your mobile phone then use the reformat option on the phone. The reformatting does not work on the Note 10.1, so you can't reformat it on that.
Let me know how it goes.

[Q] Max SD supported by recovery?

Hi,
I've noticed that my 64GB Class 10 Micro-SD is not mountable in recovery but have validated that a 8GB Micro-SD is mountable.
Is there a way to mount a 64GB in recovery? What is the max supported size in recovery?
Thanks!

Recovery does not care what size your sd card is. It does care how it is formatted.

Thanks for the response.
I let my S4 format the card. Is there a better way or so you know which format would be best.

The 64GB card comes exFAT formatted which is likely not supported yet by the recovery you are using.
If you can mount the sd card in a Windows PC you should be able to format it to FAT32 using the Windows disk management utility.
The downside to FAT32 is the 4GB file size limit.
Get EasyUS Partition Masters (GREAT PROGRAM and EASY to use) it can format your 64gb to FAT32. I did that with mine and it runs great in recovery. I had to do this on the SIII because i had like 5 roms i jumped from and these roms are not tiny.

So is FAT32 the ideal format (sans file size limits)? I just bought a Sandisk 64GB SDXC last night & it was immediately not recognizable by the phone when installed. I formatted it to FAT32 & phone still doesn't recognize it. Looking for feedback ASAP!

I actually ended up using my Mac to format as FAT and that did the trick.
Been a fully usable and recognized by the phone amount now.
Also fully recognized in recovery mode, which was important to me.

Ok, well, I just let the phone format the card, it formatted it as FAT32. I'm backing all the stuff off my 32gb card from my laptop back onto the card . . . then my music . . . after I verify it'll read the contents.

I actually did the same exact thing initially.
I put my 64GB micro-sd in, let the phone format it, loaded it up but then started to get errors reading the card and corruption warnings.
I couldn't see it or mount it when in recovery.
Android could still use it though.
If it took it out and connected it to a Mac or PC it'd not see it as a valid readable drive and would say it needed to be initialized.
It must be something about the way allowing the phone to format it but after formatting from my Mac it's been solid. No issues.

Well, phone formats it as FAT32. I stuck it back in my laptop, it was working. I copied a bunch of files to it, put it back in the phone, it was working, now back in the laptop copying my 30gb of music over. It seems to be working fine in the laptop. I hate messing with formatting/copying as it is just time consuming. I remember I thought I'd be sneaky & format some discs for a Synology NAS & copy the files over via SATA. That went over like a turd in a punchbowl because as soon as I plugged that formatted/loaded drive into the NAS, it didn't recognize it . . . and I had to do it all over again!
Ok, all 30GB copied music successfully & the apps see it no problem. I hope I don't have these problems others have had with these cards.
Thanks!

No format on SD card after marshmallow upgrade

Hi, I'm trying to find how to solve this problem with no success.
I got Bliss Rom with marshmallow and i formatted my sd card as an extension of internal memory. Something that marshmallow allows.
I got back to stock system and recovery in order to upgrade officially from stock but, the system doesn't recognize the format of my sd card, suggesting to give it a format.
After that, system keeps on not recognize my sd card and I'm stuck.
Do I have to format it taking it out and accessing via a cardreader to manage file system or there's a way to solve this?
Thank you in advance...

No success. There are 2 partitions that cannot be modified. I'm stuck...:crying:
I just [RESOLVED] an issue after inserting a brand new SanDisk 128GB microSDXC sd card.
The Honor 5X will format the blasted thing to exFAT which refuses to open up in my Windows 8.1 Laptop to access folders and the like. A try to format to FAT32 did not have that available either. (Windows only showed NTFS/(default) exFAT)
So what i did was grab this SanDisk formatter
Code:
http://www.verbatim.com/includes/binary_details.php3?show=1&id=840
and in an instant my formerly exFAT transformed to the more easily PC accessible FAT32!
Now it shows up perfectly whenever plugged into any PC via USB and you can feel free to reach your SD Card contents manually to your hearts content.
No need for Huawei's (in my opinion buggy) HiSuite which i find sorely lacking and too much wasted time with Import/Export stuff.
Hope this helps someone, anyone who thinks that they absolutely must use Honor's/Marshmallow's own formatting to exFAT.
