[Guide][HowTo] set ext2 part on all GB roms (jw4/5) - Galaxy S I9000 General

Introdution:
After all the rumers about ext2 rhat it 's not faster than ext4 and its no secured and blah blah, it's all lies and a kind of war against DamianGto..
However I tested by my self all those rumors and its found to be a big lie! EXT2 IS MUCH MORE FASTER THAN EXT4 AND THE SECURITY IS ON THE SAME LEVEL .
GUIDE:
Flash your favorite GB rom (for this guide it's 2.3.5+) (if you. Wanna flash an older rom just use older kernels)
Yes I know that till JVU you could use DamianGto's kernel and that's it but its not going right with JW4/5.
So, after you flashed a GB rom for example DMORE 3.3 (JW5), flash (via odin) DamianGto's GTO Tornado aureus gold kernel (it's 2.3.5+ kernel) [its not working with jw4/5 roms) ( http://damiangto.emc2production.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=818 )
After flashing GTO's kernel go to recovery and convert everything ti ext2, and for converting /system you have to reboot the phone.
After that go again to "downloading" mode and flash HARDCORES jw4/5 kernel (extremley important- only hardcore and GTO kernels works with ext2, but only GTO's one supports ext2 convertion.
* if you are installing. For example jw1/jvu/jvz and etc rom you can use clean GTO's kernel without any overflashing.
Enjoy!

I did this a while ago with one of damian's newer kernels, but I found out his "ext2" was actually just ex4-no journal (if i remember correctly... it was a few months ago)
However, I did the same thing with a froyo speedmod kernel (the one's with configurable lagfix - it might have been called ultimate lagfix) and then reflashed a proper gingerbread kernel - and got ext2 working awesome.
I like ext2, but I have had corruption so many times from it...
It is ok if your rom/kernel is completely stable and doesn't have reboots (unsafe reboots = sooo much corruption). Also you may get corruption if you do a battery pull (sometimes my battery falls out when i drop my phone - might be due to the third party cover).
The best thing about ext2 imo is no wasted space on journaling (maximises onenand size like rfs). Performance is a little better than ext4 and about the same as ext4 no journal.
I used to swear by ext2 but nowadays I just use rfs for stability (combined with data/data symlink, and moving & odexing important apps to system (faster onenand). filesystem lagfixes aren't as beneficial as in froyo - it only makes a difference in a few circumstances - generally heavy write operations.

[Q] LagFIX for Wildfire

I've installed the lagfix for my Samsung galaxy S and it's so much good thing for speed of phone.
So my question is if exist anything like this for wildfire. Thank you for every reply.
LagFIX creates a tiny (4kb), virtual, EXT2 filesystem within the stock RFS filesystem on the SD card. This then acts to buffer between the real FS, and Android FS, therefore reducing the disk IO requirements. However, I don't think that the Wildfire uses the RFS filesystem, which is the bottleneck on the Galaxy. Perhaps someone clever can tell me if I'm right or wrong
OK, thank you
danne_jo enabled JIT on his wildpuzzle custom rom, it should bring a good "boost" to our WF when we'll be able to use a custom recovery :3

[Q] a2sd+ in present ROMs

Guys, searched and read alot about this one - so got a question. How the hell can I put this feature into present ROMs (for example, gauner1986's ROM or early MDJ ones) without re-flashing or re-cooking the ROM again?
Got some Darktremor files - there is some directory structure in them + scripts. OK, but i.e. in gauner1986 ROM the structure is completely different. There's no init.d in /system/etc and so on. Running scripts (even edited ones) in Busybox made nothin' for me.
So the question remains - is there some mod\script\package for doing this without ROM brainf**king?
Backup all your data and settings with titanium backup or HTC Sync.
Flash this ROM, it is based on your gauner1986 ROM with Apps and Settings on ext4 partition with Data2Ext.
Your way shouldn't work or is too complicated, because it's a compressed rom to fit the 512MB Rom size. My way need not an hour and you have a newer and themeable rom. I use this ROM, it's also an Desire HD rom with nice icons and it will add the Data2Ext support in the next hours.
These ROM's are not A2SD+ roms, but they do nearly the same, use a fast ext4 partition to get more space for Apps.
A2SD+: only Apps on SD-Ext partition

Ext4

K I'm tired of stock dk28 and I wanna flash a rom but they all seem to need ext4...
does ext4 format anything? What's the benefit besides "speed increase" because I'm satisfied with the speed of the phone already
I remember I had to format my sdcard to ext4 in Amon_RA and I hope its not gonna do that again lol

It formats the internal memory of the phone to EXT4. Speed increase is not immense like some are saying.
You don't have to have EXT4 for all of the Froyo roms. I think its a little confusing to some people because most of the Froyo roms support EXT4 not Require it. For instance, Bonsai4all 1.1.3 supports EXT4 but doesn't require it. That is a nice rom if you want to try it out.

I gotta say I'm having a different experience with EXT4. I have noticed that Angry Birds stutters now and again and so does the music. Maybe something else is wrong, dunno. I am running the apps off of the SD card but I was also using RFS.

Your system files are copied to the sdcard temporarily, the internal memory is formatted ext4, and then the data is copied back. Unless there's a problem, you won't lose any data.
Additionally, all the ROMs that use Dameon's kernel and are listed as EXT4/RFS or "dual"(Bonsai, Nebula, Quantum) will boot whether the file system is EXT4 or RFS.

I'm having intermittent stuttering as well.
For me, ext4 has been a disappointment. I'm keeping it for now, but I haven't noticed any improvements, and if given the option of doing it again, I wouldn't bother at this point. As said above, lots of 2.2 ROMs don't require ext4, and I can't give you a reason to convert to it.
I am seing the best battery life with ext 4 since I've had froyo. Without ext 4 on froyo I was getting 20 maybe 30 hours on charge if I was lucky now with ext 4 I'm getting 48 - 55 hours. Sweeet I noticed a lil stutterng during games but boot is way faster.

I was incredibly curious to try the Bonsai ROM, but I've been away from the forums for a while and missed the big hooplah over EXT4 so I know very little about it. I'm not all that interested though, and the developer's install guide specifically goes through the steps to format to EXT4 and doesn't mention it being optional and there's not a lot of info about it on the Wiki.
So I could just grab it, flash it like I would any other ROM on any other phone and be fine then? And does anyone know if I would flash the extra thing he describes in his install guide? There's no indication on whether its for EXT4 only or not.
Rom manager or flashin not working
My epic never allowed flashing of roms through rom manager or maybe im doing it wrong but i have always used odin to load dk28 or back to stock dk18..does anyone know where i can get the .md5 or .tar files of any rom out there so i can load it with odin or maybe im just ass backwards and dont know what im doing?? lol not a newb but farely new to android community

You wouldn't do it through rom manager (which is when you're booted), you would do it through clockwork mod (which is a part of rom manager). Hold camera, down volume, and power when phone is off and keep holding till you boot into recovery. (I'm sorry if I'm assuming you don't know this but when ppl say they use rom manager I don't know if they know your supposed to use recovery mode)

CWM 2.5.1.8 MZ - wipe problem

Hi,
I cant mount and wipe :
/data - it write : cant mount /dev/block/stl7
/cache - it write : cant mount /dev/block/stl8
/dalvik-cache - it write : cant mount /dev/block/stl7 (File exists)
it does not matter if I have JPQ or JPS, deodexed or stock - problem i same ...
any tips ?
Delete all partitions from your sdcard, format it (not in CWM, with a 3rd part program) and then re-create partitions (from CWM).

I did this already and it does not helped as it result to this state
I created partitions with CWM included at Kyrillos 7.0
I checked there are no difference at this CWM and CWM included at Kyrillos.
But I get same issue when I used later stock ROM and deodexed too with G3MOD 1.7 kernel. There was first time I see wipe issue ...
Now I am trying gparted, we will see. ..
OK, tested, I exactly did it like You said and unfortunatelly it does not work, I get same results :-( ... and what worst I will ahve to again move 32 GB of data -**** :-(
any other tips ? different kernel usage etc ?
thnaks for any help ...

when i had this problem once, the filesystems were gone from EXT2 / EXT4 to RFS after flashing a new rom.
i don't know which filesystems u use...
have a look into /sdcard/Android/data/g3mod/fs.current , if u use g3mod kernel. (for fugumod kernel it's /sdcard/Android/data/fugumod/fs.current)
put a file "fs.convert" in /sdcard/Android/data/g3mod/ (or .....fugumod/)
the file looks like attached... (!!! cut off .txt extension !!!)
after that you have to reboot (!!! not into CWM !!!) and WAIT PATIENTLY for the kernel to convert the filesystems.
After that you should have no problems anymore with the CWM recovery.
good luck!
/data + /cache deleted - pfeeeeeeeeeeeeee !
ufff,
as noone knows and nothing work, I tried some stupidity
I changed permission to /data and /cache and tied delete them manually (mean after it there were no /data and no /cache directory.
NO flash JPS helps, no wipe data helped , I though phone were to the hell , as I always stucked at screen lock , then I see some error message setup cant process, forced closure and phone restart .over and over again
I tried flash Kyrillos 7.0 OC and it works - I am back inj game again
anyway I think there have to be made some changes to CWM, because :
- Kyrillos ROM -all wipes and mounts work
- G3 MOd kernel - wipes and mounts does NOT work correctly
- other kernel after apply CWM - wipes and mounts does not work correctly
as i told you: after flashing JPS all filesystems are converted to rfs
you can also use g3modAPP to change it (only under g3 kernel i think)

what does it means to me ? - as Kyrillos 7.0 is JPS based too ...
If I will convert rfs to efs (?) will CWM work to me even at JPS ?
what partitions have to be converted to make CWM works ?
If Kyrillos use rfs too, can be CWM files riped backward from Kyrillos ROM /system to stock/deodexed JPS ?
I need JPS stock + fugumod ultra + 5lockscreen_extended menu + CWM
And I tried CWM at JPQ , same issue - cant mount /wipe

Ok, I will try, I did no tee your post because of some page error (my side ) thanks
if u use STOCK rom there is NO CWM.
Even NOT if u use fugumod kernel.
CWM is included in custom ROMs e.g. Kyrillos' ROM
and in G3mod kernel.
If u want to have CWM you must use one of both.
When u have flashed a stock rom, the filesystems are converted to RFS.
Look into above attached file and u will see what is usually used for partition filesystems.
mmcblk0p2 ext4 (external sd-partition)
stl6 ext2 (/system)
stl7 ext4 (/data)
stl8 ext2 (/cache)
Further, when u wanna use the external partitions on the sdcard u have to use Kyrillos' app2sd script in /etc/init.d
To convert the filesystems is a just suggestion - it should also work with RFS (though i'm not sure about that....)
but you have to look at /sdcard/Android/data/fugumod/fs.current to see what filesystems are used.

many many many ..... THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKS
I have stock NON deodexed and CWM works after conversion
I had no proble mount all and wipe all
I have ext4 as sd-ext

bro if ur using g3mod then just convert all filesystems to ext2 using g3mod app ..............................its tested n m pretty sure tat it'll work

no, I am using Fugumod 1366 only, I get best results and most stable instead of G3MOD kernel 1.6 and 1.7
but I am not sure about ext2 vs ext4 someone test it on PC and ext2 get better speed results

[Q] Please explain F2FS

Hi,
I've been seeing all the new F2FS ROMs and Kernel's being developed for the N7. I'm very interested in trying it out, but I'm also getting very confused. I know what it is in principle, "a different file system created to be more optimized to the characteristics of NAND memory in flash devices." (as explained in the XDA article) - but what's the difference between 'F2FS' and All-F2FS'; which partitions does each modify? is there a performance difference between them? which ROMs/Kernel's can be used on each? etc?
Thanks!
F2FS means only the /data partition is formatted with the filesystem, while All-F2FS means all of the partitions are.
AFAIK, for F2FS one only needs a compatible kernel (and recovery) and can use any rom.
For All-F2FS one need a compatible kernel, recovery and rom.
(I'm not using f2fs myself, so someone with more experience can correct me if I'm wrong.)
Thanks Erovia, that helps
Now the question remains, is there much/any performance difference between F2FS and All-F2FS..?
I'm sure there is, but since the most used partition (in I/O perspective) the ext4->f2fs/all-f2fs gain is bigger than the f2fs->all-f2fs gain.
