[Q] Samsung Smart Stay - APK? - Galaxy S III General

Hello Samsung GSIII owners. I chose the Note for some reasons (and I still feel good about it), but the SIII comes with some nice software tricks. Mostly I could use (and like) the smartstay feature.
It seems to me that it would be somewhat possible to run it on the Note, but do people have ripped the APK file for it yet? Like someone already put the Flipboard apk file for me, can it be done with Smart Stay?

its a software + hardware feature, i dont think it will work straight away by installing that apk. so some developers would port that very soon.

This plus I think it will be integrated into the TouchWiz if I'm not mistaken.

Any updates on this?
I got a Note and want it for a S2 also...So, are there any news about it to install it easily, hopefully?!
Just as a note, if it helps @ #10:

S3 and S2 got the same front camera, so the Note, too? Because Note = S2 in big...?!?
Have a nice day.

I'm wondering about the buddy photo share feature also if anyone has any info on whether that can be ported or not.

Hi -- Intro -- and Question on Rooting

Hi --- I just purchased my tab 7.7 this week and have been reading through this forum. I traded in My Galaxy Note (actually my Girlfriend snapped it up at a bargain trade in price).
The Note was my first ever Android Phone and I absolutely loved it except for the Music Quality. I decided to go with two Devices instead --- The Nokia 808 as my phone and the Tab 7.7 as my Tablet.
The Nokia 808 has outdated hardware, a mediocre screen, a soon to be extinct OS and horrible support in terms of Apps but it absolutely shines as 1) A basic Phone 2) A superb 41Mp Camera 3) Superb Music Quality made even better through USB OTG 4) Great Navigation (Nokia Maps is really Excellent).
So I use the Tab 7.7 to offset the Nokia 808's weaknesses 1) Photo viewing and management via its magnificent screen 2) Internet Connectivity 3) All the various apps I like to use
Seems like a good match so far and I do not mind having 2 devices as I have put a 64GB microsd in the Nokia so that it replaces my Music Player as well as my casual use camera.
What do I not like about the Tab 7.7 so far??? ---- well coming from ICS on the Note seems like a step backward but actually ICS is not the great Leap so many people think it is -- So I am learning Honeycomb and its not that bad actually.
Lagginess -- a bit slower rendering big catalogs of photos than I would like but other than that not really a big deal. I am not a gamer or a Power User so the lagginess is not a big deal and it is not that bad anyway (just a bit less Zippy than the note).
What I REALLY do not like:
1) The fonts -- Uggghhhh -- What were they thinking?! I have read the posts on this topic and am using "the "Big Font" app which is more like a band-aid that at least makes the Tab usable for my tired eyes --- but it really is a far from perfect solution and makes the Tab 7.7 looks screwed up sometimes when switching between the apps.
2) Cannot write to external SD from other Apps? Were they serious?! A major inconvenience for someone like me who is putting so many images on the device and hoping to use it as an on-the-go image manager.
So now the big question ----- to Root or not to Root?????
It seems there is little in the way of user-ready Custom ROMs.
ICS is supposedly on its way either July or August.
Do we think ICS will solve the problems above?
Is it worth rooting now? Any Real benefits?
If I update to stock ICS when it becomes available can I Root from there? Or will I need to Flash back to HC to Root?
Very much interested in everybody's input.
errr.... did you miss this topic about ICS release...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748745
btw... all the rooting and writing to external SD can be read from the development section... its all there... enjoy reading
Yep -- its kind of funny I just posted -- then saw the threads on ICS -- maybe I brought you guys some Goodl Luck :silly:
As to Rooting --- Yes I have read the threads there. I know already how to Root.
I am asking for OPINIONS as to whether it really make sense given the absence of Custom ROMs --- is it worthwhile?

if you use some apps like titanium backup which required root... then its a plus... but there is many other option open when you root the device...
i like to tinkering with the build in setting... and some other thing... so root is a must for me... it give me full control over the device...
Ok Thanks --- If I am reading the ICS thread correctly it looks like you can root directly from ICS (Unlike the Note where I had to downgrade to Gingerbread first).
In that case I will let you early adopters test ICS out and see if any issues (does it have the infamous "brick bug") and maybe upgrade and root tomorrow.

[Q] Suggestions for new Note 3 user?

Hey guys.
There is a very good chance I will be getting a note 3 this week. Im a pretty avid android user, currently own a Galaxy Nexus, TF700, OUYA, Nook Color, 2x Moto Droids, and a few other android devices. Im fairly familiar with android, and love the OS. The biggest issue I have had is the lack of multitasking, and this is whey I am really excited for the note 3. I typically own an android devices for about 1 hour, and then have it rooted and unlocked. I know I have a tendancy to do this with all my devices, but I dont want to get to far ahead of myself.
So in short, what suggestions do you guys have? What ROMs seem to be running the best? Will I be missing out on the "stock" experience by throwing a ROM on it? Any really cool new features that I might not know? Please, tell me what I have to look forward to.

There are tons of features in my opinion that you can only get on a Galaxy Note device. I have decided to stick with touchwiz for the multiwindow app, the aircommand and the S-planner calendar as well as their weather widget. I use the stylus all the time and that is why I believe the note is so radical different than it's competition.
I also root the phone ASAP and stick with an "improved" touchwiz version since Samsung and Verizon really limit this great device from its full potential.
Here are some good youtube videos that you can watch that show you some of the awesome features that come with the phone.

These videos pretty much give you all the features this phone has. With the new roms coming out you will get even more features.
Good luck and if you liked what I wrote hit the thanks button for me.

Now do the ROMs that are currently available still maintain touchwiz? I really want to keep the multiwindow and s-pen features, just not all the bloatware, and get some of the tweaks that roms offer
Yeah if the rom is touchwiz based you should keep all these great features. I only use touch wiz because I think what is the point of buying a phone with the stylus and if I then ROM it and turn it into an android phone like any other. But that is just my opinion.

How to port HTC One's stock notes app to Note 3?

Hey guys,
I used to own a HTC One and loved the stock notes app it came with.
Now I own a Note 3 and really miss that app.
I found the apk file and tried to install but it failed. I guess for it to work on this system it needs to be ported.
Could someone please please port that?
Should be pretty easy for someone who knows how to do it.
Nothing??
A lot of HTC's built-in apps use their own proprietary libraries that are bundled in with Sense. Porting all of those over would be a tremendous undertaking for one app, unfortunately. Essentially until someone with too much time on their hands makes a Sense ROM for the Note 3, you're out of luck.
Your best option, buy again a HTC one.

[Q] Lightweight Rom for S5?

Slim Rom (and many other developers) have not yet come up with a version for S5. I am really fed up with touchwiz though and was wondering if there is a way i can use Slim Rom version for Galaxy S3 or S4 and install it on the Galaxy S5? I don't care if that means i have to go back to older versions of Android. Or is there another light weight ROM available for the S5? I take anything that is working better than what Samsung offers us
Thks!

1.) I can understand your feelings about TouchWiz, though it is better (and much bigger) than it used to be.
2.) I don't think you can simply modify a S3 or S4 ROM, as the hardware is different, that might take some time
3.) I would hate to no longer be able to use the camera as is. I don't know (and care) about videos, but it's quite good for Photos and quite fast, too.
Best of luck
Sven
You cannot install a ROM from an S3/S4 on an S5!! Absolutely not!! If you haven't figured that out then you should avoid custom ROMs like the plague.

Stock Android possible?

Been many a yore since I've been on Android consistently, been out-of-the-loop since the earliest days.
Just curious, is it technically possible to get a "Nexus-like" experience on a device like the Note 4 nowadays?
I'm attracted by all the sw/service benefits of a Nexus device, but I really love the hw of the Note 4*...
Is it possible to have "the best of both worlds" or close? I realise it's not an option so early in the device's life-cycle, but later perhaps?
Thank-you.
*Also considering the Note Edge (more research needed), but not 100% sold on it yet, unless someone can make a compelling case

What you want is a rom based on AOSP (like cyanogenmod). It has the advantage of being nearly stock android with updates nearly as fast as google can push them out. It is much much quicker than carrier updates. Plus, AOSP is community/google supported so you can count on updates long after the carriers stop supporting your phone. This support is what allows kitkat to run on a galaxy s2 or a barnes and noble nook. lol.
So the catch to all this is you MUST have an unlocked bootloader. ATT and verizon are out because they have locked their bootloader.
On the note 3, people who had the tmobile note 3 (unlocked bootloader) had kitkat months and months before the ATT touchwiz kitkat was pushed by ATT.
But I'm not worried all that much about carriers not supporting my phone...
I usually buy unbranded/unlocked (i.e. outright: it makes more sense in my country -not USA), I imagine the same -or similar- applies to ODM/OEM's?
How far out are they (AOSP-based ROMS like CM) exactly from being stock Android?*
Are there many major differences, or only some minor ones, what are they exactly?
Thank-you/goodnight, bed time, 2am!
*i.e. what we have on Nexus devices
^Anyone? Thank-you!

It's as close as you can get, almost to the point of being the same. I honestly can't think of any major differences. My wife went from CM to a nexus 5 and she new exactly where everything was. My nexus 7 interface looks like my cm11 nook tablets.
Apart from the UX though, what are all the major (or minor) services/functionalities you lose?*
I mean mostly compared to stock Android that's found on the latest Nexus devices, but I guess also compared to Samsung's spin.

*Given that mircury isn't sure on this point, can someone else please have a crack.
The main issues with going to AOSP are the inferior camera app and the lack of multiwindow support. With the big Volantis tablet coming out soon, Google may finally bake some multiwindow support into "L", and maybe devs can use the RAW access APIs to fix the camera, but I wouldn't expect miracles out of the box.
If you do want AOSP, you'll probably want to get a Qualcomm-based Note instead of an Exynos one - for various reasons a lot of the dev goes quicker on the Qualcomm platform. Not sure which will be the standard version in your country.

That's literally it? That's nothing if that's all there is!?!
I'm used to hanging out mostly on quite esoteric/hack-ish platforms, so if that's all I have to deal with, "no biggy".

Yeah I suspected that might be the case, I haven't checked that yet, I'm in Australasia/Oceania, Australia specifically.
I hope I've lucked out there, IIRC the international version (i.e. not local/telco-centric) usually is Qualcomm isn't it?

No need to bump your post 3 times. I would suggest you go on youtube and watch some video reviews. You will find that it is very much nexus like with no features lost.
Pretty sure you'll lose any proprietary stuff. Like the heartrate sensor...etc...especially the special uses for the S-Pen.

And is it unlikely that the AOSP community will eventually add support for such things?

No I'm talking about all 3, i.e...
If I switch to AOSP (CM etc) what features will be missing* compared to: (1) stock on Nexus devices, & (2) stock Android for the Note 4.
Although I'm mostly interested in the former...
As I can easily work out the latter once (if) I have a Note 4, simply by using Samsung's flavour of Android for a while.
*& what bugs will I encounter

So we've basically established in previous posts that AOSP = Nexus features wise. No need to hash that out again.
Compared to Samsung's stock rom there is a TON of stuff and even more stuff when compared to Samsung's stock rom after each carrier has had it's way with it.
1. Multi windows
2. all the Spen features (Some spen features can be added back. See thread in note 3 forum.)
3. Tmobile wifi calling
4. Touchwiz
5. Different Notification pull down.
6. Different settings menus.
7. Carrier Bloatware
8. 4K recording not available in stock AOSP. Some have used Oneplus camera app. (Camera app not as good as Samsung's stock)
9. HDMI out not working.
10. NFC not working on some builds.
11. All the Samsung specific apps like milk music and SBeam.
12. Tethering limitations on the Carrier version stock (This is a big one)
I'll add more as I think of them...

Don't care about what carriers may or may not add, I'll most likely be getting one that isn't carrier-based.
Even if I do get one from a carrier it won't be a US-based one, it'll most likely be from Telstra, & IME it never adds anything of value.

I thought we did. lol. I don't know how much clearer we can get. Google controls AOSP. It is stock android through and through. Go read up on what AOSP is and then read what CM is.
