Sudden battery drain & hot phone; CM7, CM9 - Galaxy S I9000 General

In general, the battery is very good on the Galaxy S.
But, I have been having a strange battery problem since CM7:
The phone would suddenly heat up (near the upper back portion of the phone; near the camera) and the battery would drain very fast.
Currently running CM9, 20120330-NIGHTLY-galaxymtd, stock kernel.
Phone model: Samsung Galaxy S i9000
Radio (baseband): I9000XXJVK
CM version: 9-20120330-NIGHTLY-galaxymtd

A = Normal usage (you can see the gradient varies with higher/lower phone use)
B = Airplane Mode overnight
C = Normal usage
D = Strange super fast battery drain
From times provided, there is a 14% loss in battery in 37mins 38secs, which gives a battery drain of 22.3% per hour.
The phone would last less than 4.5 hours.
You can see that the phone is not being used from the Screen On bar. The phone was simply sitting on my desk at work.
Normal usage drain would suggest less than 10% per hour.

Now, I have always assumed it was a CyanogenMod bug. But recently found out that a friend's Nexus S (stock everything; 4.0.4) also suffers from a bug with the same outcome. I have an inkling that the problem may be Android based, but I have no way to be sure.
Is this a CyanogenMod problem? Could it be an Android bug?
Is the problem isolated to the Galaxy S and Nexus S?
For a while, I thought that toggling Airplane Mode will halt the quick battery drain. However now, I'm pretty sure that it has no effect.
***
I have tried aLogcat, hoping to see one process getting hammered repeatedly but there doesnt seem to be anything suspicious happening.
Is there anything I can do to see what the problem might be?
Are there any other apps that could reveal the problem?
I haven't yet found an official bug post similar to this yet, so please post it if you find anything similar. (Posts like "OMGz batry porblems!" dont really count)
***
Lastly, before anyone blames me for downloading crappy apps which have caused the problem, I only have 35 installed apps, and I stick to the popular ones: AirDroid, aLogcat, Angry Birds Space, Barcode Scanner, BBC News, Chrome Beta, ES File Explorer, Facebook, GMail, Google Finance, Google Goggles, Google +, Instagram etc...
The less popular ones are: Ice Cream Sandwich Clock, Shareprice
Thanks! Hopefully, we can get this issue sorted.

Never heard of that problem before. You should look if it also appears on stock ROMs and on CM without any apps(only the one you really need. But I guess it's a hardware issue.

Is it just me or does your mobile network signal show a weak signal whenever your battery starts to die?

It could be many things...but I'd be suspicious of apps... Facebook transfers a lot of data in the background for example and I'm not even sure they updated for ICS yet.
I'd try logging out of those apps before you get to that level of battery drain and see if it still happens.

Same Issue
I have the same issue. The phone is not in a case while charging. The metal plates that keep the SIM card and the SD card get very hot to the touch. Sometimes the battery percentage gets stuck, so I have to let it cool down before continuing to charge.
Does anyone a way to fix this?
I'm using a Galaxy S GT-I9000M running Cyanogenmod 9 Nightly 20120503.

My situation occurs when it is NOT charging.
Any phone is bound to heat up when charging, its normal?
I'm more concerned with the 22% drop per hour.

You're suggesting that whenever "Mobile network signal" turns red it occurs?
I'll look out for it if/when it occur again.
Any ideas what it could be if it were the case?
Polling to connect too often?
(I assume "Mobile network signal" refers to 2G and 3g signals?)
Thanks.

With 0503 my phone is draining only when I start using Internet. The draining is about one percent per minute (very fast).

When using the phone you would expect the battery to drain faster.
Try to take a larger percentage loss over a longer period of time; it isnt very accurate using tiny numbers.
My phone was more or less idle for the duration of 22% loss per hour (you can see when the screen was on via the relevant bar).

I have the same problem too.
I don't know why. It's just have battery drain and hot with cm9 or miui.

Yes exactly. The phone begins polling the mobile 2/3G network and begins sucking power. I'm not sure how or why that would cause such drastic drops in battery but the graph seems to suggest that they are connected in some way. Data is known to drain power and if the system is repeatedly attempting to connect to mobile data while the signal is weak it may take more resources.
I could definitely be wrong here. Just an observation.

Well, data sync is supposed to be on.
Its the battery drain that isn't supposed to happen.
Any one know if this occurs on Stock Nexus S's and the Galaxy Nexus?

+1 on CM9 0506 battery drain (1% per minute)
I know for a fact my phone is not the problem cause this bug does not happen on Gingerbread ROMs paired with Semaphore Kernel.
I also have a pair of Anker 1,800mAh batteries, plus the original 1,500mAh Samsung one and they are all draining really fast on both HSDPA/3G and 2G networks. Under WiFi it drains a bit slower. About 1% every 5 - 8 minutes or so (with screen always on as well). I live in Brazil and I use TIM 3G+ as carrier.
By the way, my phone heats up A LOT while I'm using the browser or Facebook App internet without WiFi, just using the 3G network. But I've also noticed that Facebok app had almost 30% of battery usage. Since it's the app I use the most. It didn't use to be that way on GB ROMs. But after the recent Facebook updates I wouldn't be able to tell since I've been using ICS CM9 nightlys for over over 3 weeks now.
Every time I install a new nightly I make sure to wipe cache as well as dalvik cache. I do that procedure both before and after installing a new nightly ROM.
The only thing I changed is the launcher. I use APEX Pro 1.1.1 instead so I can backup my settings and desktop apps if something goes wrong and I happen to do a full wipe.
I'm running latest update-cm-9-20120506-NIGHTLY-galaxysmtd-signed.zip with stock, default kernel. No Overclock or any other mods.
Other than that, I think this is the best ICS for my i9000. I experience no FC's and no Low Storage problems. The albums are not quadruplicating my photos like other ROMS and the compass works great on Google Maps. By the way, 3D gaming is just great with v504. Real Racing 2 runs nice and smooth on it.
Thanks for the great work Devs and sorry for making this too lengthy.

I can't really be sure. I haven't checked their battery stats at the time of the drain, so all I'm going on is that they agree with my description.
He'a a bit of a noob so I'm not sure if hes just agreeing for the sake of agreeing.

Following from your comment about Mobile network signal polling. You would expect a toggling of Airplane mode to disrupt the battery drain, right?
I definitely toggled it during the fast drain... maybe toggled too quickly for the network to shut off
Will try it again, if/when the fast drain occurs again.

Have you tried the mDNIe Mode settings in:
System Settings > Advanced ?
CM9 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Samsung Stock
***********************************************
Anyway enough of the derailing...
For the people who get this fast drain issue:
1. Is your phone connected to Wifi when the fast drain occurs?
2. Are your Wifi settings set to Always Keep Wifi on during sleep?
Could you try setting Wifi to Never use wifi during Sleep?
System Settings > Wifi > Menu > Advanced Keep Wifi on during sleep = Never
And then report back!
Is it possible that Always using Wifi during sleep, even when you are not connected to a router, can cause the battery drain?
This is only a guess, but I'll run this little experiment too. Maybe we are getting somewhere?...
Thanks.
EDIT: I believe Google have inverted the wording on this. On 2.3 it mentions Wifi Sleep... and now its Keep Wifi ON during sleep.
I am suggesting turning it to "Never (increases data usage)"... [as opposed to Wifi Sleep = Never]

My Android OS drain culprit -

Edit: just so u know that that the process irq/325-k3g is causing the android os issue. Once again this process is only visible in the free app osmonitor. I let it run wild for couple of hours and it drained my battery excessively and also made android os go up to 50% battery usage. So it seems the culprit for the android os drain is process irq/325-k3g.
The process is just showing consumption when the drain happens and NOT all the time. So if u see your battery dropping quickly have a look to see if the process is consuming CPU . /Edit
Right, so ive observed lately that when my battery starts dropping % quickly that a process called irq/k325-k3g is consuming a lot of CPU.
This is only visible with the app osmonitor under process.
This randomly happens and seems to be triggered by the stock browser.
If the process kicks up it won't stop on its own, I can't stop that process in osmonitor and thus causing excessive battery drain cause it continousely uses cpu. The only way to stop this process is by killing internet (browser.apk).
I had the same problem on all roms I've tried so maybe someone else suffering from this find this helpful.
This doesn't solve the root of the problem but atleast its a temp fix.
Any feedback appreciated.

So back to your solution mate, does this process work when you use opera mini? I never use the stock browser.

A coworker showed me his SGS2 today : uptime 2days 23h and still 39% battery remaining..
config :
1) No airplane mode
2) No wifi at all
3) No gapps autosync
4) No task killer
5) some phone calls (20 minutes), a few sms and browsing. A little gaming too..
I have the same config : but poweroff after 1d and 6 hours...
irritating
I've had 2 different units and found the battery life to be awesome on each one. I'm wondering whether users previous handsets are coming in to play i.e. are they coming from Blackberrys or old Nokias?
Quietness on a certain issue tends to point to most people not suffering from it.

why he did not got a usual phone .
The problem is the huge battery drain in idle mode , i had a galaxy s before the drain was 1.5% per hours now i am getting 8-10% per hour

To be honest I thought my battery life on my Nokia N900 was crappy, max 2 days, usually though 1 1/2 days but coming on to my first Android, battery lasts me less than 17 hours on average lol
I was surprised, I was expecting more actually considering it is a more mature OS than Maemo, might have better battery management. Guess I was wrong haha.
That said I keep my phone charged to my PC when ever I am at work so it doesnt really bother me much.
Ever thought that maybe you've all got an awesome phone, maybe just playing with it quite a lot more than you would have any other phone.
I know i am, but when i had a day off playing it lasted 2days with 37% left.

An explantion by a google engineer for the battery drain issue:
Comment 297 by [email protected], Apr 7, 2011
A problem has been identified in the driver for the wifi device on the Nexus One (bcm4329). The problem can cause the phone to repeatedly enter its suspend state and immediately wake up, resulting in a severe degradation of battery life. The problem has only been observed on Nexus One running the Gingerbread updates to the wifi driver and device firmware, although the driver is used in other phones as well. A fix is in the works, but I don't have information on a release at this time.
Turning off the wifi device, or modifying the wifi sleep policy to never sleep, may avoid the problem in the meantime.

Here is a more exhaustive explanation:
Comment 261 by [email protected], Apr 20, 2011
@nsbu: The message about "'uart_clk' not off" looks alarming but is actually harmless -- this clock doesn't prevent the SoC from suspending, and this message always appears at suspend time in Android kernels running on Qualcomm MSM chipsets. (If other clocks were listed here then those could represent a problem.)
Similar to a previous report on a T-Mobile myTouch 4G discussed here, the data logged on wakeup reasons needs to be interpreted by the OEM that has the hardware specs for the phone and the Qualcomm radio firmware source that generates some of that info. HTC is the OEM for that phone; their support site is http://www.htc.com/us/support . Or try the T-Mobile support site at http://support.t-mobile.com/viewAllProducts.html , they seem to sell this device under their own brand.
In case anyone's confused, it's recognized that some phones do have battery life problems that stem from: (a) not properly suspending to low-power states and, (b) continually attempting to suspend and resume, burning CPU in the suspend thread. The causes tend to be due to devices continually generating interrupts (that might not be properly handled by device drivers and hence continue to be generated), or drivers rejecting suspend for conditions that should be short-lived but instead persist for long time periods. In many cases the drivers involved are written by OEMs and Google does not have any knowledge of the drivers or devices causing the problem -- the folks who made the phone need to take a look.
Problems with the Google Nexus One described in another issue referenced in previous comments fall in the same category, and in that case we have the hardware and the design info needed to diagnose the problem (wifi driver interrupt handling problem), and a fix is on the way.

Voice calls isn't a way to check your battery life. As soon as you hold the phone near your ear, screen turns off. For proper checking, you have to surf internet via Wi-Fi/3G, play Games, watch Movies etc..Just keep the screen on. I think if you even talk 6/7 hours per day (and do nothing else) then the GS II will last for more than 2 days, surely. Voice calls can't be a way to check battery, for any phone.

Battery Drain - Again! events/0 and suspend !

Hi,
I have on my Samsung Galaxy S2 as well as on my Samsung Galaxy Note a huge battery drain caused to 2 processes : "events/0" and "suspend".
I have already read a lot of threads concerning this problem, but without finding a solution.
I found out, that I only have this bug, when activating my Wifi connection (on both devices). I tried every wifi sleep policy, still getting same results.
So finally, my Android OS battery usage is more than 50%, even more than my display.
Does anyone know a solution for this problem, considering that now I'm sure that it's linked to the wifi activation on both phones. (I did a factory reset and there was no battery drain until I activated Wifi without having any other apps installed, besides of System Panel to monitor....)
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Ben
If your phone is rooted you should 'freeze' or remove the apps "Wifi sharing manager" and "Wifi sharing" with Titanium Backup. Fixes your Wifi-problems.
It's a service that looks for other Samsung Wifi devices constantly when Wifi is turned on, thus draining the battery.
No, my Phone isn't rooted. I was not sure if I should or not, considering the warranty problems. Is there no other way?
A lot of other users don't have this problem, I don't get why I have it-.-

As far as I know, it doesn't really void your warranty as long as you do it the right way and unroot your phone before you send it back to Samsung (if problems occur).
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
As an alternative you can disable WiFi when you are not using it with apps like Green Power and Juice Defender (although I strongly advise Green Power for it's ease of use).
Thank you.. But there has to be another way to solve this problem, because people I know don't have this bug... without using any batterysaving software. :/
I guess it's a native issue of your device...

In the first week that I got the Note, the device is eating up about 10% of batter per hour even when idle. The way that I use this Android phone was no difference than other Android devices I have used. When checked the battery usage, I was stunt to find that the Android OS was using 90% of the battery. Funny is that the screen showed a usage of 20minutes, while the OS showed a usage of almost 3 hours.
Soon after, I decided to do a factory reset due to other reasons. Some how this problem went away and the usage is back to normal. I don't know what happened, but in my case, it solved the issue.
Also I don't use the Note as a phone, but rather as a mini-tablet when I am not at home. So I decided to put the device in Flight mode when it is not in use. In this mode, the device hardly uses any battery. For example when I went to sleep, the battery was at 79%. When I woke up 7 hours later, the battery still shows 79%.
Hope this help!

How about you stop ASS-uming about devices that you don't own. The Galaxy Note is faster, smoother, lighter, and more portible than your Motorola tablet. The only tablet that can match or even outperform the Note is the Galaxy tab so have fun with your soon to be obsolete tablet.
OT: Your issue may be fixed with a factory reset.

Did you try 'Green Power'?
Did you try the app "Green Power". It is pretty good and promising. It will turn off Wifi / 3g while it is not using, it save much power. The paid version just including the 'night' mode.
I'm suddenly facing this issue. Have had no problem with the battery so far. My battery went from 40% to 15% overnight with the screen off and wifi off. :s

Edit one more time: I found the battery draining really fast just now too: 15%-12% in about 20 minutes.
Clearing the RAM seems to have stopped that though.
I really do think it's the wi-fi sharing/manager processes. I've frozen mine to see if that makes any difference.

I have the same problem with my SGN, it drains the battery once wifi is activated, anyone came up with a solution for that?

I solved my problem thanks to a tip on this forum. I just did a factory reset for my ohone, and then reflashed the firmware. Its working great now
ok, but what version?
I'd think it's pretty relevant to know what android/fw-version you're all using? I'm on Samsung's original 2.3.6 and have no issues...

No, its not. Coze I've upgraded to 2.3.6, and then downgraded to 2.3.5 again, and my problem was still there. Only a factory reset solved my problem.
By the way, u can notice something is wrong by the amount of heat generated while using the wifi, or by how slow pc usb charging could be. It even used to discharge when connected to pc!
The amount of heat was a very strong indication that there was something wrong.
Still battery drain
Hello all,
as of 26 march 2012, I still have something problematic on my samsung galaxy note. I flashed last Open German firmware (LC1) (from samfirmware). The phone is rooted, and as far as I noticed the "suspend" process is still draining the most battery compared with the display ratio. I tried to wipe everything, I downgraded back from LB1 to KKA with Odin, wiped, flashed LC1 and reinstalled onyl paid apps (i.e. not with no advertises). I turned off the Wifi but the susped is still there, eating 63% of resources.
There are not special kernel wakelocks... any ideas on how to go ahead?
I have a standard non rooted rom. I also faced sudden battery drain, but use the following solution -
Folders - keep to the application page not home screens
Backlight - off when inside, 50% if outside or on charge (auto drains faster)
Browser - use one of the low power saving mode
Screen background - live wallpaper eats battery. Use a dark based wallpaper , use much less power
With all the above battery is fine. GB 2.3.6.
I've had the exact same problem as the topic starter. Android system running over 90% in standby and suspend and events/0 running at 100%. I had this problem on stock XXLA6, on Darky V3.3 XXLA6 and Rocket V23 XXLC1 and after a number of full wipes.
My wifi wouldn't turn off in standby and setting different sleep policies didn't do a thing.
I removed the Samsung Sharing app, installed GreenPower and set it to turn off wifi and 3G/data as I don't need sync when it's in standby anyway.
All problems are gone now, after an hour in standby I still have 100% charge and after browsing for 5 minutes it lowered to 99%. Suspend and events/0 no longer run when the phone is in standby, wifi is turned off and Android System is at 4% now.

Battery troubleshooting (ROM inspecific)

This thread is to discus extremely poor battery life on the Nexus S. When we say extremely poor, we mean averaging <24 hours per charge at idle.
After much research I think it's safe to say that some of us are experiencing extremely poor or contrarily, extremely good battery life and no one seems to have an explanation. I'm hoping this thread will find the answer.
The issue:
Many NS users are experiencing extremely poor battery life regardless of:
Rom installed
Apps installed
Installation method
Battery used
Charging method/battery training
Phone usage
Power configuration/tweaks
When we say "extremely poor" we mean <24 hours at idle, but many users are getting less than 8h/C at idle.
I personally have tested this against several ROMS both GB and ICS. We all see slightly better battery performance with GB ROMS, but never greater than 24h/charge.
My ROM history:
Tested the following ROMS for 4 days each, following the same installation procedure each time.
CM7 (nightly/stable) - ~15h/[email protected]
CM9 - ~13h/[email protected]
CyberGR .v4.5 - ~11h/[email protected]
CyberGR .v5.0 - ~11h/[email protected]
Installation method:
Wipe battery stats
Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition
Flash Dalvik-wiper.zip and wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition again
Format /system/data/cache/boot/sdcard
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps if applicable (CyberGR comes with Gapps installed)
I was running an AUCKF1 Radio for all tests. I did try a few other radio's but did not see any noticeable increase in battery life *edit-flashed XXXKB3 and may have increased my idle time by 6x? still testing*
I've also never personally seen an NS get >24h/C, and I've deployed >40 of them to customers. I've only ever heard of >24h/C here on the forums where it seems quite common.
I've seen reports of users flashing the OTA automatically or manually, and some experience <8h/[email protected] while others see >3d/[email protected] I've also tested the OTA and never saw better than 13h/[email protected]
So, we're trying to find the common denominator between those with good battery performance vs. those with poor performance.
Suspects:
Android OS is almost always reported to be active/awake for at least 50% of the time, even at idle on a brand new clean install. It is always the highest consumer of battery, always keeps the CPU awake.
I propose the following test:
Regardless of your setup, if you are experiencing >2d/[email protected] or with use, please post the following:
Phone model (ie: i9020a, i9020t...)
ROM
Radio version
Installation method
Screenshot of your battery monitor from a full charge over a minimum of 10 hours.
Screenshot of your battery use by application/service (we notice that Android OS seems to be the culprit in most cases of poor performance)
For those getting <1d/[email protected], please do the following and then post the same as above:
Note: This should be done overnight.
Follow the above flash instructions and flash whatever ROM you please.
Reboot to recovery and wipe your battery stats.
Power off your handset and give it a full charge while powered off.
On first reboot, sign into a single Google account but do not restore your apps/backups and disable Google sync.
Do not install any additional applications.
Enable wifi/bt/gps/data/sync and associate to a wireless network
Do not modify any power settings.
Leave your handset to idle overnight for at least 8 hours without touching anything.
In the morning, take a screenshot of your battery use as well as battery use by application/service.
Post Phone model, ROM, Radio version, Carrier, and Screenshots.
I recognize that there is some argument about how fast your battery will re-train itself after wiping battery stats. In my experience the training seems to be optimal after 1 full charge to full discharge cycle, but ultimately I've never seen further training result in >24h/C. Someone please let me know if there's a more accurate way to test this? Maybe we shouldn't be wiping battery stats at all?
I'll get us started.
Sorry, didn't get screenshots after 8 hours because my battery wouldn't last that long.

With light to moderate use, I get 6-10h/C
Hey Ben i just did what you did in the other thread. full charge everything on kill all unneeded services.
I'll admit that i forgot to kill extra services and it plummeted my battery to 92% in about 45min. I had an "oh ****" moment and went and killed the random apps.
Im at 2 hours extra now and lost 3% only, everything still on.
So with that info i'll mention this for me would be considered heavy usage. I'll never have everything on constantly. When I was posting up my results of light usage and getting 3 days - note that i had everything firewalled while on 3G except for my emails and messaging and took a few calls only. everything else was off.
I'm gonna guess that with it all on and actually using the phone i'll hit at most 10 hours, probably not even that.
So that basically puts us about even. I'm curious if you do my light tests...will you be seeing 3 days also ? If yes then we can rule out models basically.
Flashed XXXKB3, factory reset (according to OP instructions), flashed CyberGR .v5 again, signed into one Google account, disabled Google sync+backup, enabled and connected to wifi, bt/gps/everything on, then left my phone overnight. Results.
Looks ****in' Gooood. 1.2%/[email protected] draw.
But then, opened my screen once, played some tunes through BT to my truck, drove around for 13 minutes, went back in the house and left the phone idling again and look at the drop! It's continued to draw like this all day now, just idling. I've done NOTHING but play 13 minutes of music and then back to idle.
What's DOES IT MEAN??!!
So I rebooted my phone and let it idle again without touching anything, and still seeing the wicked battery draw. I dunno wtf to think here, and I can't get the draw back down to 1%/[email protected]
*edit* For the sake of 100% transparency, while the phone was idling at 1%/h overnight, I was far enough away from the wifi AP i'd associtated to, that it MAY have lost signal and given up, so perhaps the wifi hardware finally went to sleep. Does anyone know if wpa_supplicant (or whatever controls wifi in Android) runs is represented by AndroidOS?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Oh. Dur...
I think that may be it. Wifi was probably dis-associated overnight. You can see at the very beginning of the battery recording, there's a sharp dip in charge for about 15 minutes, which corresponds directly to Wifi association, then the draw goes nearly flat (1%/h) for 10.5 hours and the Wifi is not associated.
Testing now... Leaving Wifi on, but dis-associated. See if that nice flat line comes back.

This is a normal night of going out, connecting with friends, a bit of music before. A weekend for when it is most important, these are the results. I forgot to photo the android os but it said it was awake, cpu for 4 hrs.
Regarding the Android OS being highest battery consumer, it might be false alarm:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456265
Although still, that hasn't explained the high drain (<10h/day) you're experiencing.
In your first set of screencaps (the 2h30m one) it seems obvious that the culprit is Mediaserver and Google+? One of the most annoying things about ICS that I found is that after flashing ROMs or kernels, Google-Photos have a tendency to enable sync behind our backs. Someone in my local forum discovered when he logged in G+ in his PC that the pictures in his Nexus S had suddenly shown up in the G+ account even though he never uploaded them there. After he disabled that sync, his battery life improved. As a result, I've grown OCD about checking my sync settings every once in a while. The Google-Photos option doesn't always show right away when we set up a new Google account.

I'm back to 1%/[email protected] with everything but wifi enabled.
All sync settings enabled with no sync delay.
G+/data/gallery sync all enabled for 3 accounts. Receiving about 30 emails in 14.5 hours overnight. This should work out to 111h/[email protected]
The question here for me is that I thought Wifi would use less power than 3G given it's such lower range. I thought that when Wifi was associated that your 3G would automatically disconnect, thus using less power when associated to a Wifi AP than when connected to 3G.
Am I mistaken in this? Is this not the desired operation?
*edit* It may be looking like my draw increased by about 8x as soon as I opened the screen for the first time this morning, and hasn't dropped back down to the 1%/h. Right now it seems to be at about 10%/h again, though I'll report back on this later today.

power drain increases for dunno whatever reason...
right after a reboot it goes ok if I do not touch it... as soon (or five minutes later) as I start playing with it the power drain increases a lot and android OS takes over any other service...
generally to test I wipe the battery stats before booting from recovery...
maybe we should check in logcat what trigger the high android OS usage?

I've checked logcat/dmesg and haven't seen anything super suspect (to my somewhat untrained Android eyes). I have done a tonne of power management scripting/troubleshooting in laptops and other mobile devices but this is really my first serious foray into Android PM, so I may be missing something.

As I said, stock settings from CyberGR .v5. Signed in to all three Google accounts and left sync enabled. Turned off Wifi but left everything else enabled.
Drove around (phone paired to my truck for music) for a few hours today, light/moderate use, and I'm currently sitting at 69% battery remaining, coming up on 24 hours on battery. Realistically, this is probably a little lighter use than normal for me, plus I usually plug in when I'm in the Jeep as I'm running not only music over BT to my Jeep, but also streaming OBDii data from my ECU to Torque (and my screen is usually on full time while driving as I like to keep track of my mileage (troubleshooting fuel efficiency as well ).
So all said, stock settings with CyberGr, Radio XXXKB3, Wifi off, everything else on, and I should easily get 2 full days of light use.
Now that said, I'm still waiting for someone getting 3-5 days to chime in. I still feel something isn't quite right.
Wow. Practically the same as myself but my battery is now around 6-7 hrs before I need a charge. I will have to buy a new battery and see if that is the culprit. Over even just flash CM9 instead, who knows..

I doubt it's a bad battery. You're seeing the same life I was before I flashed the XXXKB3 radio and re-installed the ROM properly. Follow the installation instructions from the OP and see if that solves your problem.
After looking at an earlier shot here I notice my android os stays on most of the time hence my bad battery. How do I get it to sleep?

So does mine, but it is not an accurate reflection of battery drain, per android engineer Dianne Hackborn. Look at the Android OS percentage in my screen shots - it doesn't matter.
For those with excessive battery drain: install Battery Monitor Widget and Better Battery Stats from the market. Those two apps should provide all the data you need to troubleshoot poor performance.
Also, check your signal strength. Weak reception will drain your battery in a hurry.

[Q] Incredibly annoying battery life on idle, AFTER rooting

I'll start off that I'm a novice android user, I got this phone a month ago and before that I was using a Nokia E63.
Anyway, so I rooted and all that junk, did a factory reset and all that junk, and now my battery is complete garbage on idle.
Before I rooted, when in idle for 8~ hours, the slope was very minimal and I lost about 1-5% battery life. Now, the battery is draining like crazy, to the point where I have to charge several times a day.
I know the problem isn't the fact that I rooted.. but what is!?!

OK, now this is strange,
at first I thought it was fixed; what I did was update Google Maps. After a few hours, the problem of "google services" came back...
help!!
Keep your phone connected to Wi-Fi while you're sleeping and it will drain much less (I've sometimes seen <5% over 8-10 hours). Keeping your phone on network will continue to "wake it" during the night.
Get GSAM Battery Monitor or BetterBatteryStats to get a better look at exactly what is draining your battery so quickly.
It has to be one of the Google apps running on the background. Like somebody mentioned, get better battery stats to see what's exactly draining your phone. Also, I've noticed that if I keep NFC enabled, some apps that utilize it, will kill my phone way faster. So check NFC maybe, try disabling it and see if it makes a difference.

Well before I rooted there was absolutely no problem with battery. I use a $15 tmobile plan with no data. I basically use my phone like a tablet. NFC and most other features are disabled.
I'll give that other kernel a shot once I figure our how to do all this...

I had the exact same issue, and there is a problem with the Nexus 4 in that some applications stop the phone deep sleeping, even though the same applications have no issues on other devices. This keep awake seems to happen lower down and isn't recorded in Android as the phone being awake. The same issue appears on Franco kernel (I've tested it) as well so that isn't a fix if this is the problem.
Follow my post here to see if you are affected, then work to find the problem app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36100401#post36100401
If anyone wants to test this with other kernels then:
Download CPU Spy. Reset CPU spy timers to zero, and first check the phone is deep sleeping by leaving for 30 minutes with screen off and USB cable unplugged and confirm Deep Sleep is around 90% or more. Now download Snowfall Live Wallpaper and set the wall paper as active, repeat the above, and see that Deep Sleep is never entered into. Use your favourite battery stats checker and you will find no indication of wake locks. Snowfall Live Wallpaper doesn't even have permission to keep a device awake.
Next set a different wall paper from the stock options (live or static) and repeat the test, note that Deep sleep is STILL not being entered even though the live wall paper is no longer in use. Now from the list of cached processes, remove the cached process for the Snowfall Live wall paper, repeat the test, and now the phone is entering Deep Sleep. So this particular wall paper has the power to stop the phone deep sleeping even when it is a cached (and so stopped) process. Another application that causes this bug is BeWeather & Widgets.
Even un-installing the problem application doesn't return the phone to be able to deep sleep, as the app is still a cached process. This can make it difficult to find the app causing a problem.
Testing these applications on a Nexus 7 and HTC One X causes no issues with the device deep sleeping, ergo, Nexus 4 bug. I'm sure there are other applications causing the same issue.
Regards
Phil

It is not garbage at all.
The op must have too many background apps running. Probably has nothing to do with the kernal or rooting..

I have wifi on almost all the time and I get a full day, 5 hours screen on time. I use franko kernel and aokp.
Google services must be something like lattitude reporting your location, or an app that polls data all the time. Even with
auto sync on, whatsapp syncing and wifi on all day I dont have google services anywhere in my battery list.
Of course, it is entirely possible it is something to do with google now, which I have turned off

I originally hated Google Maps (before I rooted) because it used up about 1-5% of my battery with GPS and all other related settings disabled... no problems at all with battery back then. I basically did the same thing after I rooted, but then I started having the Google Services battery problem, where then I re-enabled most of the Google applications I disabled (maps, books, magazines, wallet) and updated them, hoping for Google Services to be satisfied, but nada.
Anyway, today was TERRIBLE. I need to keep WiFi on all the time otherwise Google Services eats my battery. But at the end of school today, I looked at my phone in horror to see that Google Maps took a huge chunk of my battery (and 3 hours earlier there was no trace of Google Maps in the battery status settings)
Battery life today : the bad stuff started happening once I left the mobile service area. Google Maps did not show up on battery settings before that time.
Keep AWAKE FOR AN HOUR???
still not sure what this is, 5% from this app basically translates to another 30-40 minutes of battery life
acceptable wifi usage
CPU SPY:
I just disabled the Google Location Services, I wonder if that would change anything... could it really be that simple? Unlikely.
As for applications, I don't have many... and I don't have a live wallpaper or anything. I keep my phone on the lowest brightness indoors and automatic outside. I try to save every bit of battery I can, and a useless wallpaper or running application doesn't help with that (I uninstalled a few apps like FB that kept on running in the background)
I wish I had 20 hours of battery life... My N4 is empty after 6 hours on CM10 with Francos kernel.

Android OS draining battery?

Well my nexus has been giving me 5 hours SOT for the longest time, but just randomly, it decided to start dying really fast. I checked battery stats, and sure enough, android OS is the killer here. I'm aware android OS drains are usually because of apps installed, but I haven't installed anything new or suspicious any time recently. I even did a full wipe and reinstalled the rom I'm running.

Here's my battery shots.
Anyone know how to troubleshoot which apps are killing my system? I'm running CM 4/22/13 and franco.kernel r127 if that makes any difference.
Thanks guys!

If your phone has been on standby for that long then obviously androidos will be up there since nothing else has been working your battery. Post the pics so I can clarify this.

Nah because when it happened (at least for me) the battery drain was sudden and drastic.
All day Screen was at the top, then all of the sudden in the evening Android OS went from 15% to 74% in about 15 minutes.

Pretty much my scenario
android os thing happened to me, i think for me it was because it was trying really hard to connect and stay connected to the bad wifi at my school, turned off wifi and the drain stopped. not sure about ur situation though

This might just help you out. It'll show you any partial and kernel wakelocks and which processes are causing it.
I had this problem a while ago, so I did a clean install of my rom and apps and the problem was gone. If you can pinpoint the app that's causing your phone to stay awake, you can avoid having to do what I did xD
Really weird... this has been happening to me too, but not as drastic as yours (still a good chunk)
I just reflashed my ROM just in case that was the problem.
Also when I used better battery stats to see what's going on, all it showed me was the power manager thingy. Which showed me nothing.

That's all it ever shows when it comes to Google services jacking up the phone. Kind of convenient for Google since we can't pin down/point blame for the issue

Turning off WiFi when idle at school seems to have helped. I did notice that when I got to my house it seems the battery drain is more normal. Maybe it really is because the WiFi is just slow.

did you ever solve this problem? or find out what caused it?
I had a similar issue. My phone would not deep sleep. Yet things would work fine when I wasn't on WiFi. A reboot of my WiFi router fixed it.

=================================
[SOLVE]
first go to Settings -> Developer Options -> Apps Tab -> checked Don't keep activities
set brightness to auto
then go to location services -> off access my location
then go to wifi -> advanced Wi-Fi -> keep wi-fi on during sleep -> change to Never
now go to application manager -> Running Tab -> Force stop some apps with extra ram usage like settings
my phone just uses 5% battery in 13hr sleep mode ; ENJOY!

I think if you only do this you will solve the problem.
At least for me my only problem with "Android OS" is when sleeping my phone and having "keep wi-fi on during sleep -> Always".
I have franco kernel and cannot check the kernel wakelocks but I test some days with CM kernel and didn't see any kernel wakelock that consumes too much battery... but maybe some of you have this problem: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1039838404
Wow, what a surprise... I solve my own problem with my last reply xD
I mean, when I installed CM months ago I select "keep wi-fi on during sleep -> Always" because I thought that if I don't do this I will not receive any notification. The fact is that when putting "Never" Android OS was CPU active mostly the 80-90% of time my phone was sleeping and Wifi ON and now with "Always" (or when plugged) has CPU active like 20-30%... AND I receive notifications also.
Probably when downloading a large data If I put my phone to sleep It will stop download, I didn't try.
One thing I don't understand is that when sleeping it doesn't use mobile data (as it says "Increases data usage"), even I have data and wifi on.
So, if I get notifications in both options ("Never" and "Always") and I get less battery drain with "Never" I prefer "Never".

You say you receive notifications even with the "never" option, but are you sure its not using your cellular data connection instead?
I've experienced similar problem with GS4 after 4.3 update

There is a bug in google backup service, google backup service acquires wfii connectivity lock and does not release it for hours which prevents device entering deep sleep and as a result drains battery. Fortunately you can disable backup in Settings->Accounts->Backup and Reset-> uncheck 'Backup my data'. This should resolve the issue ... after a full recharge monitor your battery stats - Android OS should NOT be on the top.

Sorry disabling backup didn't help - encountered the same problem. There is indeed a bug that some OS module that holds a wlan lock but it's not a backup service. I suspect that full charge triggers this flow. Device restart will temporarily fix the issue. I'll post if i will find the causer, sorry for mislead.
Download this application it will resolve the problem till google fix it. h_t_t_p://kvant.store.aptoide.com/app/market/com.kvant_hv.BatteryLeakResolver/7/4579526/Battery%20Leak%20Resolver%20(OS%204.3)
