Tap notification bar to scroll to top in any app - Nexus S General

Ever since my switch over to Android a few years back from my iPhone 3G, I've always been waiting for such a feature in Android that will give me the ability to tap the notification bar and instantly scroll back to the top in any app that requires scrolling. I've never once asked for this feature once until now. I've Googled it and it seems to be a rare topic. Do Android users know if this such feature? Because it seems like an easy concept and assuming wouldn't be difficult to incorporate a mod into Android... or would it?

Used to like that feature on the iphone a year back. But don't you think that it is also possible to just flung one time and the whole page goes up? In iOS the flings are not continuous. To me at least. I would love to have this though.

I agree, that's one feature that android is sorely lacking.

Yes, that is what I have to do now. But when I'm reading a long article, flinging up on the page 20 times gets old.

I think Apple would sue Google if that feature was intriduced to Android

I think the new Samsung Galaxy S 3 has an gesture with scrolls in any list to the top. You just tap the top of the phone twice.

It's weird that just few people care of this feature, which is very cool, I miss it so much

nope. i'd never use this if it were rolled into android. it seems very un-natural to tap the notification bar to go to the top. let iOS have this one....we don't want it anyway.

Well, some of us do. Seems like it would be something fairly easy to do with some dev knowledge.

So you would rather swipe over and over to reach the top of a loooonnng list rather than tapping the status bar once? Oooooooook.

you better try to experience this feature, then decide it's natural or un-natural.
in general, 1 side: users have to swipe many many times to come to the top of the page; another side: just a tap then done(just like the home key on PC) - smooth and easy. Think and compare

I think it would be cool if it could be implemented to a long press menu button, when I tap the top it tries to change brightness..

[REQ] Notification Bar / Calendar Widget

Hello all
Just wanted to thank this community as a whole for all the great work they've done. I'm in love with my N1, rooted with CM and all the good stuff I found on this forum.
After tinkering around with my N1 for quite some time a potentially neat idea occurred to me (hope this is the right spot for it). I use my phone primarily for business use and general functionality. At the same time I tend to nitpick about ease-of-use, convenience and simplicity. My idea (alleging it doesn't already exist) is basically an advanced google calendar widget embedded into the notifications drop down. Obviously, this would turn primary use of the drop down into the said calender, but with the convenience to be able to pull it up in a second while allowing for more effective multi tasking.
I'm not a new to the developers world, but am as far as the Android OS goes. I was hoping a few experienced hands might see this as a nice little challenge. At the same time, for the willing, I would not mind at all attempting this challenge on my own (obviously with some much needed assistance ).
Sorry for the long post, and I look forward to hearing constructive feedback.
Thanks in advance!
Are you thinking more along the lines of something that lists upcoming events, or rather an actual calendar image? I'm not if the latter can be accomplished, but would definitely be willing to start working on something.
Hi!
Welcome to the forums!

If not, can you elaborate on what you mean by an 'embedded calendar widget' in the notifications window?
.
You could add a calendar shortcut to the dock using one of the new launchers...

That´s nice, thanx!
Thanks guy, I certainly appreciate all the responses and the warm welcome. Initially I wanted calender functionality inside the notifications drop down because it can be pulled up at anytime without having to switch to any other programs. Often times while writing emails I like to cross check my schedule mid proposal. Two applications/widgets I switch between are the "Pure Grid Calender" and the "Android Agenda Widget". I'm probably going too far here but this would be amazing: Upon touching the top bar initially, it switched to the notifications and the bar lowers a bit (all before actually sliding the menu down). If upon touching the bar, it slid down (that same amount) but with two options, one for notifications and one for calender. you could then slide your finger to the left or right to choose which drop down you want, and proceeded to slide it down and the chosen menu would then appear full screen.
This is probably impossible lol, i have a wild imagination. I can do a better mock-up after work with illustrations if indeed that was too wordy.

Ah I see. Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to override/replace touching the status bar. You can put things in it, but having 'two' of them with left/right swipe I don't think is user-replaceable.
However, there ARE apps that let you put any shortcut you want in the Notifications Tray:

http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.schwimmer.android.barcontrol/
I think your thinking of something along the lines of SBSettings for the iphone os?
@ paul Thank you for that information, if nothing else thats very useful.
@ zKilla: i am not familiar with iphone at all, i made the bold move to go straight into the world of android . But after doing some research that seems like it would be a great compromise.. only problem is if its even feasible to build into the N1
Also if any devs know where i could start poking my nose around, perhaps i figure this out on my own, lord knows itll take a few years tho ha

Is there an app to put power control widget in notification pulldown?

That would be sweet. Pretty much the only feature of my long gone jailbroken I*phone (sbsettings) that I miss was activating that screen with a swipe without exiting the focused application. It must be possible in android. Any info?
Quicksettings?
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
There is an app in the market called "Quick Settings" which can be placed in the Ongoing notification dropdown that is customizable to include everything on the power control widget and more.
I am a fan of "power strip", a great paid app.
Quick Settings is really nice. Thanks y'all.
FYI, I've also used NOTIFi by Sisedi Media. It's skinnable and has a polished look that's a little different from the normal android UI.
Try QuickDesk Beta. It's a single extra homescreen that you access by double tapping the home button. Can put any widgets or shortcuts that you can put on your home screen. That way, all you have to do is double tap your home button, use the power strip, then hit back to get out of QuickDesk Beta and you'll be back in your original app.
The MIUI ROM has this as a fixed element at the bottom of the drop down.

The amount of times i've wished I didn't have to return to Home Screen to toggle GPS / WIFI etc - this is the absolute perfect solution. If it had customisable entries where we could launch a task switcher - WIN WIN!
+1 hopefully.
Perhaps this thread should be moved to Andoid General for greater visibility?
Steve.
theres an app thats called "in app toggle wifi" or something where you just have to hold the search softkey for a couple of seconds. even better in that it is hidden.
A good alternative is quickdesk by ruqqq, I've set it to bring up its "screen" on home double tap.
quickdesk is awesome. Not only can use power control but any app that you want without leaving any application. love it
Just noticed that the galaxy tab has this too.

Switching keyboard modes

On the N8, 10.1 one can use a two finger pich to change keyboard modes (fixed, floating, split). On the 12.2 you cannot. this is especially annoying when in multiwindow mode and it defaults to the tiny floating keyboard. Am I missing a setting or is there a workaround?
+1 for any info on this. I thought the keyboard button was on every configuration of the keyboard, but it doesn't seem to show up in the multi window keyboard.

Not as elegant or easy as with the two-finger gesture. Also, doesnt always revert to ABC keyboard after putting away pen.
Would like to see the two-finger gesture ported over. Its embarrassing to show off multiwindow, have small keyboard pop up. Is there way to default to full keyboard regardless of window configuration?

Wasnt just embarrising today, it slowed me down. Remoted in to my files and had webmail side by side, had to fiddle to get full screen keyboard.
I will say this thing has saved my ass 100 times over already. Its def. works in a highly professional environment (in this case, $1bln+ bond closing). Very useful to carry around the room, fix documents etc.
This is a nice alternative to the samsung keyboard. It isnt quite as ergonomic as the built in one but it wont default to a mini one when you are using the multi window
It is called hackers keyboard and is free on the play store. It is highly configureable and should be exactly what you are looking for.

I'm gonna post some screenshots also for those who have not gotten into the beta group yet.
Just noticed some new options when connecting the phone to a PC, including reverse charging and use as a MIDI device. Also, my PC now identifies the Phone as an Honor 8 instead of FRD-L04.
Is there a DPI setting anywhere in the settings menu? I think Nougat was supposed to have this built in... at least stock Nougat does.

This is one of the reason for my wife to choose the honor 8. She doesn't wanna see the half page size of short cuts when she would like to see as many as notifications at the same time.
And they removed the time column from the left side right? This is going to be a downgrade from emui 4.1 to 5.0

I don't think it's the same as iPhone X gesture. But as seen in the video, it's kinda trash. Why use gesture to show the recent apps only? Still have to press home to go to homescreen. Still have to press back to go back. Still have the damn big black navigation bar. It just removes the recent button for nothing at all.
I looked into leaks and it seems to me that this is an alternative type of navigation, which you can enable in Settings. We will have to wait and see how it will be implemented. Hoping that it won't be default and the only type of navigation...

This isn't gesture. OnePlus Beta has had full gesture like iPhone X for many months now that works like iPhone. Basically, most of it is the 3 essential movements. Swipe up from bottom on the left side, go back. Swipe up the middle from bottom, Home. Swipe right side from bottom, menu.
I really like that feature before I switched to VZW and had to get a new phone the Pixel 2 XL.
Another good feature with OnePlus implementation, all of your apps use the full screen in this mode. No bars/space at the bottom, you actually have a fully usable display now and the apps fit it properly.
Some of the mods in a few custom Roms that allow navbar height adjustment, do that for some apps, but the bar is still there. Even a few of the swipe nav features don't make the apps fit the full screen.
That is how a true swipe function should work, your screen is fully usable to the bottom. Apps like Waze fit better adding that little bit to the screen real estate. And I got used to the swiping very quickly, had a hard time going back to the regular bottons on the screen.
Not everything Apple does/implement is garbage. This is one that makes sense, gives you more screen real estate, and is easy to adapt your behavior to. I'm tired of the big fat top/bottom space of the Pixel. OnePlus 5T and the new 6 are really a good example of how a phone should be made, slim near zero bezels, more screen space, and simple gesture features.
We can now sign up to beta lads one question though.. I've opted in... Will i get the beta thru ota on dp1? Or do i need to roll back to 8.1 ?
You will need to roll back.

Those features were not killed, just moved. To switch back to the most recent app just slide the pill quickly to the right from any screen - that's even easier than double tap. For multiwindow / split screen you swipe up briefly to get to the recent apps then each app has an icon in the center top that you can click to go into split screen or get app info.
