I accidentally rooted stock t-mobile mytouch 4g 2.3.4 (2.32.531.1) - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dears:
Following is my steps.
1. go to htcdev.com, get and flash RUU_Glacier_hboot_0.89.0007_signed.exe.
2. go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003 and download hasoon2000 's Vivid All-In-One Kit V2.1.
A. extract Vivid All-In-One Kit V2.1 and execute Vivid 2.1.exe in it.
B. because I've installed HTC driver and registered in HTCDEV, I started from step 3 "Get Token ID" to step 5 "Unlock Bootloader".
C. download http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.0-glacier.img and put it in Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v2.0\Data\Recovery directory.
D. rename recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.0-glacier.img to recovery-cwm-vivid-5.5.0.4B2.img
E. back to hasoon2000 's Vivid All-In-One Kit V2.1. Execute Vivid 2.1.exe again then choose "CWM 5.5.0.4(GB)" and press "flash recovery"
F. boot the phone into recovery, go to "-mounts and storage", choose "- mount /data", "-mount /sdcard", "- mount /system".
G. back to Vivid 2.1.exe, in "Extra" section, choose "Perm Root(GB/ICS)", that's all.

So this is how to root 2.3.4? If so then awesome!

Edit: upon further thinking.... That's a lot of steps for an "accident"....?

Yesterday, I tried to root vivid and amaze and both was succeeded.
Then I was wondering if I can use the same method to root mytouch 4g.
The downgrade steps is a little bit complicated, I'm too lazy to take a try.
That's why I use "accidentally" , and that works!

This is awesome if it's legit! The downgrade process we've been using is a big hassle IMO. Great find!

I am gonna move this outta dev section to the Q&A..
Also Dev method isn't that bad few extra steps to do things..

That's nothing more than HTCDEV unlocked bootloader! When you flash a Rom, prepare to flash the boot.img seperate! You should really re-lock your bootloader and root properly. That big pink "UNLOCKED" has got HTCDEV unlocked all over it...I wouldn't do this people!....
Sent from my HTC GLACIER using xda premium

Thank you raphael888 for your post. This indeed works. Here is how I verified this is more than just the HTCDEV bootloader unlock.
First I just did the HTCDEV bootloader steps. Then installed Root Check from the market. Root checker verified the phone was still locked although the bootloader was unlocked. The system security status was S-On
I then continued your steps to the end. I then checked the phone with the Root Check. This time it said that I have root privileges. I also loaded Root Uninstall. I was able to give SU authority to system apps. The system security status is still S-On. However it appears I have SU access.
So your steps gives the Super User ability. You may not be able to flash the ROM. However if your goal is to be able to have greater control over your phone this is much better than the HTCDEV Bootloader Unlock.
Once again Thanks for your help!!

This is EXACTLY HTCDev bootloader unlock, and you don't know what HTCDev bootloader unlock is. Or should I clarify: this is EXACTLY the rooting method that involves HTCDev bootloader unlock as one of its steps, referenced as "HTCDev unlock" just like other methods are referenced by the main step in multiple-step scheme ("gfree" or "root.sh"), which isn't a method of choice and isn't suggested to anyone but those who only want root on stock ROM, thus it didn't receive a sticky of its own.

This one does not use gfree or ADB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021. It uses Visionary and worked great for me.

After following that procedure, you'll have the 0.85.2007 bootloader. The version number is lower, but it's actually better because it's the engineering version.

You really shouldn't post your email or your phone number on here... but try using the visionary method mentioned above

Visionary ROOTS the phone.
S-OFF means UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER.
Please read and understand the big difference between the 2. There is a ton of info, both on the forum and in Google. And if you don't understand - please refrain from messing with your phone.

All I can say is you're not following it correctly. Dozens upon dozens (or more) have used these guides with no problem, so if it's not working, the only other variable is user error. Plus, you didn't tell us anything about what's not working, so how could anyone help?

yeah, i just got a new mytouch 4g last week as well, and though i've rooted it with visionary, it won't stay rooted and s still =on. i can't get s=off. i've tried the gfree method, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021, this one, (and the sdk adb one also)
and one prooblem i might be having, is i don't know what you mean when you say reboot or rather, i don't know if your saying to restart the phone or power off completely, or remove the battery, i'm really confused about your specific language.

I'll ask in a simpler fashion i guess.
1) we know you've previously rooted your phone
2) we know you are now only keeping s-on.
What errors are you getting when you try to do the ./gfree method or the root.sh method..
if they are not working you are getting errors. What are they.
I dont want to use gfree since I see a lot of newbies having problems unrooting

so, i used gfree correctly this time i guess, it worked quite brilliantly. sorry for the noob-ness.
There is a method in the development section stating how to do because I have the 86. Bootloader and the gfree works fine for me

Once you've unlocked the Legend download and run the HTC Supertool V3 from your machine, select option 1 then option 3 and you'll be permanently rooted, then you can install rom manager and deploy whatever rom you want.
So, if I vaguely recall correctly,...
This basically means we won't need the gold-card trick anymore.
I use my Legend for app testing, both CM7 and Blayo ROM as a proxy for stock. I avoid real stock ROMs because they tend to be a pain to re-root etc.
So perhaps I can try real stock ROMs and be able to switch back that much easier...

[Q] Mytouch 4G official bootloader unlock, benefit?

I want to ask what is benefit for MT4G ? is it make the root process easier on official GB ROM? or what...? (confused >_<)
Here is a discussion about it...am sure htc will be able to unlock it easy, but sound like its not worth it...

There really is no benefit. You can't revert back to S-On if you root your phone using that method, so if your device somehow gets bricked, you have no way of reverting back.
I would still HIGHLY recommend the old ways... The right ways.

btw, when you use the HTCDev method to unlock, it Stays S-On. the top of the bootloader will say "Unlocked", therefore making the device permanently unlocked. THIS PROCESS CANNOT BE REVERTED. ONCE YOU UNLOCK THE HTCDEV WAY, YOUR WARRANTY IS DONE.
so no, i don't think "fastboot oem lock" will completely do it
bootloader will show "Relocked" instead.

There is a way back
There is a way back, I have a Glacier, made the mistake of taking the plunge, but it is a SERIOUS PAIN to get back.
Took me all weekend to find a way to reflash the engineering hboot, but finally got it.
No locked or Unlocked notice at all.
The question is - if you're able to flash kernels from recovery with Eng HBOOT, or if it skips them just as HTC-Dev-unlocked Ship HBOOTs would.
Strange question, here.
With the Glacier when you dev unlock you have to flash hboot # 89.0001 into the phone to unlock. Since I was able to reflash the 85.xxxxx eng hboot back in could that mean that others would be able to revert to an original? Meaning flash in the hboot for their phone that has never been unlocked, and regain s-off?

4. Q: Does rooting do any of the following? 1. Wipe the data? 2. Unlock the bootloader? 3. Change the recovery ?
A: You have to unlock the bootloader before rooting. It won't wipe the data or change the recovery.

6. Q: Is rooting confirmed on HTC? I got the latest HTC update and it's 2.3.3, not 2.3.7, and rooting is unsuccessful. Will I need custom rom?
A: Make sure your HTC is in S-off state. If rooting fails in S-off state, it's caused by different firmware Version.

Another reason why this person needs to refrain from rooting their device. It's very clear to me that either this person has 1) done absolutely no research prior to wanting to root their device. They'd know that rooting alone will not do what they want it to do 2) it's a spammer promoting their site 3) afraid of ADB and doing it the proper way.
When I posted that web site all, I was trying to help the People who has trouble downgrading through ADB by turn S-Off with adb then root your phone

[Q]Visionary+ Apk

Hi, I've been trying to fully S-OFF my buddy's new MyTouch 4G Glacier that he ordered online. It has Android 2.3.4 and I was able to unlock bootloader and put clockworkmod touch recovery. But he wants a Rom and custom kernel. Flashing kernels won't work via fastboot or they do, but don't actually apply. I wanted to just fully Perm-S-OFF it with the guide in Dev thread, but the link to Visionary+ apk isn't working. I've searched n searched on XDA and Google. All links I find are either BS malware or 404'd lol. Does anyone have a copy of it I could get? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Drew

Why can't you flash as is? Did you unlock the boot loader via HTC dev unlock? If so, you will need to relock it, then find the guides to downgrade to froyo, and then root from there...
Well my intention is not to give bad advice but rather state what worked for me. If this method can lead to a bricked device then i appologise for the bad info.

Such a lot of mess...
A phone unlocked with HTCDev should receive custom kernels, if it doesn't - it means the kernels aren't being flashed correctly and OP should learn to use fastboot.
A phone unlocked with HTCDev won't get downgraded unless relocked.
Without downgrading there won't be S-OFF of any kind. Neither gfree nor root.sh work on Gingerbread.
Rooting isn't S-OFF.
Putting custom ROM on isn't rooting.
To flash anything from recovery only, without using fastboot, S-OFF is required.

I have achieved S-OFF a long time back and updated my ROM. I needed to use the terminal emulator the other day in super user mode but was denied SU access. Remembering back I had used visionary to obtain root and thus su access. Visionary no longer runs (it appears to lock up in a black screen) nor am I able su access.
How can one obtain su access after s-off has been achieved and the phone has downloaded an update?
su reports the su binary is out of date.
