[TUT] Remove Junk Apps + List (4.1.A.0.562)[Updated for ICS!] - Xperia Arc General

Hello guys,
as you might remember I posted a tutorial on how to remove Junk Apps for 2.3.4 firmwares.
A lot of people requested the same for 4.0.3 - so here it is guys
I decided to open a new topic to keep it clearly arranged for Android 2.3 and Android 4.0.
So let's get started:
How to delete the Junk Apps:
Go into "system/app" with Root Explorer, in that folder are all the Junk Apps. Now press "Mount R/W". Now you can delete the Junk Apps one by one or multi-select them. To have a backup of the apps, I'd suggest you to move them to the sd card. It's good to make a folder called "Junk Apps - name of the firmware" on your sd card.
Now select the apps, press move and go to the sd card and to the folder "Junk Apps - name of the firmware" and press paste. Done.
List of the Junk Apps for 4.1.A.0.562:
- adobereader.apk (Adobe Reader)
- antradioservice.apk (ANT Radio Service)
- chinesetextinput.apk (chinese keyboard)
- datatrafficswitch.apk (Data on/off widget)
- DigitalClockWidget.apk (digital clock widget)
- Home.apk (Sony launcher, only delete this when you have another launcher installed!!)
- JapaneseIME.apk (japanese keyboard)
- letsgolf_ay.apk (Let's Golf)
- livewaremanager.apk (Live Ware Manager)
- neoreader.apk (Neoreader)
- officesuite.apk (Office Suite)
- OmaDatasyncService.apk (part of Sony Sync)
- playnowclientarvato.apk (Play Now)
- POBoxSknPink.apk (skin for chinese keyboard)
- POBoxSknWood.apk (skin for chinese keyboard)
- Protips.apk (Android tips on homescreen)
- SemcCrashMonitor.apk (Crash Monitor)
- SEMCSetupWizard.apk (Setup Wizard)
- Stk.apk (SIM Tool Kit)
- storefront.apk (all the new stuff that has something to do with Fun&Downloads. Removes 3 items from the app drawer that belong to that game thing)
- Sync.apk (Sony Sync)
- Talk.apk (Google Talk)
- talkback.apk
- trackid.apk (Track ID)
- UpdateCenter.apk (Update Center)
- usersupport.apk (Support)
- WeatherWidget.apk (Weather widget)
- widgetanalogclock.apk (Clock widget)
- widgetcalendar.apk (Calendar widget)
- widgetdigitalclock.apk (digital clock widget)
- widgetonoff.apk (most on/off widgets)
- widgettimer.apk (timer widget)
- widgetworldclock.apk (world clock widget)
I've removed all these apps from my Xperia Arc and it's running fine and faster than before. Also you have more free RAM so your apps don't get killed as fast anymore when you minimized them.
This might also work on other Xperias when they are on the mentioned firmware, too. But I can't test that.
Thanks to:
doomed151 for posting a list of all stock apps in system/app for me
Do this at your own risk. I'm not responsible if you brick or damage your phone by doing this!
If this helped you, please press "Thanks"
Regards,

Thank you for posting this Flo95, I removed some useless .apk files from my ROM.
Thanks button pressed.

Thanks that's what I needed!
I've also deleted an app called "Sakura" or something like this, I've seen somewhere that is related to the chinese keyboard but I'm not sure.
I've removed it and so far so good!
and yes, deleting this crap has helped my phone to be much much better in terms of performance!
I'm using Titanium Backup, would that be the same as the way with the Root Explorer?

I didn't have Sakura on my phone.
Yeah, Titanium Backup does the same.

I know the post is just stating sys apps it's safe to remove but I love the data on/off widget.
Saving me money and battery at the moment.

Yes, but if want to you can flash the Power Statusbar Widget:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540084
It's more nice IMHO than a widget on the screen.

Tripov does have a point. It's a nice feature to have in your notification bar and on top you can customize the icons you need for whatever suits you. This eliminated the need for HD Widgets on my handset.
Very nice post!

Haha yeh, I thought something was missing!
In my opinion we should split apps to several categories:
1. Apps
2. Widgets
3. Games
Here is mine list:
1. Apps
gtasks - simple note app that will sync with your gmail acc too
ASTRO File manager - as names says, in my opinion bast file explorer, it can unistall/kill apps too
FlashApp - allows you to use your HTC Desire as a flashlight, using your LED Camera
2. Widgets
BatteryLife - allows you too se temp/battery status on your homescreen
3. Games
Moto X Mayhem - nice motor racing game
Racing Thunder 2 - nice racing game
@benko, im not sure whether to keep it just for Desire specific apps though! anybody got any thoughts?
Desire spesific would be best.
It's nice to get tips on apps I might not have heard about, but there are a lot of threads on best android apps, and a lot of internet sites on the same topic.
Heres another desire spesific:

This thread mentions a call confirm app, that turns out to be sort of desire spesific... I'm guessing it would work on more devices, but the dev only has a htc desire. And due to the nature of the call app in htc desire, I reckon it could be added to the list here.

still looking for more desire specific apps to add! Make some more suggestions
Here's a couple of my favourites (search for the app name on Marketplace):
- Barcode scanner - easily find and install apps from barcodes
- ColorNote - nice widget for post-it notes on your home screen
- FotMob - soccer information for all major leagues
- GDocs - access your Google Documents on your device
- Gmote - control your computer with this remote
- Goggles - awesome software for finding information about anything - just take a picture of it!
- Google translate - ask no more
- gStrings - get tuned on the fly
- My Tracks - track your trips and share with your friends
- Navigon - great GPS navigation tool
- Photoshop.com Mobile - currently the best image editor for Android
- Robo Defense - best Android game ever!
- Shazam - what's the name of that song on the radio??? Record it and find out with Shazam!
- Sportypal - another tracking app which is great
- Spotify - awesome music streaming service with a great UI on Android
- WiMP - a Spotify-like streaming software
- XDA - XDA forum app for Android
- Zedge - thousands of wallpapers and music, free and easy download
Most of them are probably not Desire specific, but they are still great apps
I agree, I have most of them too! But this particular topic is designed to be Desire specific!
Hi

thanks a lot very good idea !!!

FolderOrganizer home widgets! (Skin collection)

It was my idea: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6307695
SHOW that Android can display apps in a UNIQUE compelling, nice looking way! Not just GRID of icons!!
Fully skin-able too! I have never seen this on other platform, so you can show this to your iPhone friends
And I contacted the developer of the FolderOrganizer and he made it as part of his app
http://sites.google.com/site/folderorganizer/how-to/createskin
Note, I do not have any affiliation with him, not at all. I just helped him with ideas, testing and created some skins.
The new home widget is skin-able.
A skin is just an image (PNG file) for each widget size (small, medium, large).
Image sizes are:
small = 480x150
medium = 480x320
large = 480x500
For landscape mode:
small = 780x120
medium = 780x240
large = 780x360
You should name the landscape mode image with _land at the end.
For example,
Your skin image file name is "myskin_medium.png", then the landscape mode should be "myskin_medium_land.png".
Then an XML file (config.xml) to specify the skin properties.
See my examples in post #2 and #3.
Finally, put together in a folder, for example "My Skin".
Put this folder in the sd-card: \FolderOrganizer\Skins\My Skin
That's it!
I am sure there are a lot of talented graphics designer here in XDA which can create and share this kind of skin
Screenshot of the widgets:
Here is an example of skin that I created.
To use the skin, copy the skin folder "Simple Dark" to the sd-card like this:
\FolderOrganizer\Skins\Simple Dark
Another skin "Brushed Metal", good for dark wallpaper
i love this....i'd like to see what skins we will have here
Nice idea. I prefer what AppsOrganizer/FolderOrganizer do far better though.
Unless... You can have tabs on one of those homescreen grids ?

Well, this is a new feature of the FolderOrganizer that you knew.
This is NOT another application, if you are confused.
It is just an option which you could use to "dress" up your Android phone
All functionality of FolderOrganizer is supported with the widget.
Think this as another "size" of FolderOrganizer widget. Originally, it has only 1x1 widget size. Now it has small (1x4), medium (2x4) and large (3x4).

I see. Thanks for clarifying. A few more qs:
Will this feature be added to AppsOrganizer too, or just FolderOrganizer?
Same dev, very similar functionality between them too.
Can you add GMail widget to this widget? (you couldn't with previous versions)
Is there any option to save all your settings in the app?

I have no idea if this feature will be put into the AppsOrganizer. You must ask the developer.
Adding widget into a wdiget? I dont think that can be done here.
Yes, you can save (EXPORT) your FolderOrganizer settings to sd-card.

Yep, free from Marketplace (obviously)

i mean there's lite version and full version, which is not freee
FolderOrganizer full version is only 0.99 euro, which is about $1.39 USD.
I am not promoting this, but it is not expensive at all.
Im using the free version atm, still allows you to achieve the same thing.
If you plan to use it a lot, may as well buy it i suppose

i can't pay for full one, cause i live in wrong country iguess....
One thing i have noticed is that these FolderOrganiser widgets seem to hog the memory quite a bit...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I don't suppose it lets you use small icons for the shortcuts within each group? I'd like to use half size icons myself.
How do you check widget memory usage? Do I need root to do that?

Astro file manager -> menu -> tools -> process manager is one means to view memory usage.
Right, I was thinking there is another way to specifically view the "widget" memory usage.
Using ASTRO (and also Quick System Info), the FolderOrganizer memory usage is about 17 MB.
Compared to other widgets:
- Beautiful widget = 15 MB
- Pure Calendar widget = 14 MB
I don't think FolderOrganizer is memory hog, considering I am using 2 widgets with my "Brushed Metal" skin which of course has large background image size (because of I am using "metal pattern", and PNG is not as efficient as JPG on compression [PNG is lossless])

Your Current/Favorite SE Xperia X8 Apps

Here is my list with the most useful apps for me at the moment, on rooted Android 1.6:
ADW Launcher (i like it much more than the stock SE one)
Advanced Task Killer Pro
Bluetooth File Transfer
Beautiful Widgets (for the home screen widget)
BeamReader (PDF reader)
Google Sky Map
Layar
Astro File Manager
Fast Dialer (a nice dialer with built in search for contacts, as OneDialer or Nubdial do not work on 1.6 devices)
IM+ (works well with Yahoo Messenger, since it's native client does not support the Donut)
Igo (works great and locks very fast)
I still use the stock Music player since it has everything i need
Rock Player (great for lots of movie formats)
System App Remover (I actually removed the Stock SE Homescreen from internal storage and some other apps i did not need. Be careful not to remove any sistem apps!)
Vignette (for a better camera experience, great effects. I alse liked Retro Camera and Fx Camera)
I use stock browser and gallery (both feel snappy and offer good user experience)
For the games, i play:
ExZeus (works great)
My Paper Plane 2
NFS Shift (plays smoothly)
Raging Thunder 2 (again very smooth)
The Wars (addictive game)
Parallel Kingdom (RPG using Google Maps)
ProjectINF
Angry Birds plays really well, but had some problems with the last version (freezez from time to time)
Linpack score: 2.8 MFLOPS
Quadrant Standard: 430-450
Overall the device does not lag even on Android 1.6 and I hope for the better once SE rolls out Android 2.1. (lazyyyyyy)
I am interested in what apps and games you find usefull and enjoy using, and what your experience is using this device.
great list!

So Google Sky Maps works for you? I have issues with the compass when using any official Google-app. With all other apps like "GPS Status" or "OruxMaps" the compass is working fine, just not with any app by Google.
thanks a lot for ur list of games...

What's wrong with the default dialer?
If you can't find it then it's probably not compatible with your phone.

1. Default dialer doesnt do speed dials (allocating numbers to contacts), nor does it have the smart dialling feature that most android phones have - this means that when on your dialpad you can type the names (or letters to the names) and the dialpad will display matching items. Once you ve used one of these its difficult to go back.
2. This thread states "current favourite apps for xperia x8" in the title which runs 1.6 as standard (at the mo) then states in the OP "on my rooted 1.6 android.
So thanks for comments but I still want to try the "fast dialer"
http://www.mobihand.com/product.asp?id=86769 find the dialer here. it is not free though but well worth it's price if you still have 1.6. Otherwise I would recommand OneDialer (I use it) or Nubdial.

I said that from experience, that's all. My Dad and I both have Xperias, I got a X8 whilst he has a X10 mini. Because of his smaller screen, he can't get all the apps I have, and so they don't appear in the market for him.
My list (on 2.1) :
Launcher pro+
APN On/Off (gprs switch widget)
Skype (works great on 2.1)
A Online Radio
Advanced Task Killer
Angry Birds (no problems at all)
Applanet (market replacement)
Csipsimple (sip client, works ok)
eQuotes (quote of the hour widget)
Fruit Ninja (game)
HyperJump (Great game!)
SpacePhysics (cool game)
SPB TV (liveTV)
U Connect (logics game)
Wifi Manager (wifi widget with network name + ip)
Winds of steel (nice game)
Audiowidget
What are the benefits of ADW launcher or Launcher Pro+ vs Sony Ericsson Launcher. How about speed? Will the phone "think" slower with ADW or Launcher Pro?
PAWserver
APNdroid (also have 3G Widget)
Meridian + Rockplayer
ASTRO File Manager
Unicode Map (for special char input)
to communicate with my servers:
andriodVNC
AndFTP
ConnectBot
for root:
Root Explorer
Titanium Backup
Terminal Emulator
any better choices are welcome.
I would really like to run Droid Wall or WellDroid (both are firewall GUIs),
but they need netfilters-kernelmod for IPtables. Eagerly looking for any help/info on that. Thx!
-Titanium backup
-Hanashi
-Hoccer
-Shangmail
-Dual file manager
-Quick office
-All call recorder
-animated weather

I'd like this to be a community effort and so i would really love if you guys could tell me what icons you guys want and how you'd like them.
This are the information i will need if you want me to add your icon:
1: Name of application
2: Process name of the application [Using Quick System Info, click the application and the details, there will be a process name displayed, thats what i need]
3: The location of the icon of the app [Open up the APK of the app and look for the icon that the app uses. What i need is where it is located and what the name of the icon file is (Geniewidget.apk/res/drawable/icon.png or geniwidget_logo.png)
4: If you can, please make the icon yourself.
5: Thats it, just post the info here! PMing me would be easier if you really need the icon quick.

If you have any questions about the settings (launcher, zooper or other), you can write me. I think this is not the easiest option.

I think in this case there will be no easy for you. The Zooper is not complicated, but the lightning launcher. I think the easiest way is to see some videos on youtube (keywords: "lightning launcher tutorial" and "zooper pro tutorial"). I'm sorry, but to write the all detailed steps would be very lengthy. If you have specific questions about the apps used, it can help you.

Zooper the easier thing. But, if you are interested this topic and like highly customizable launcher, it not will be a problem. If you have specific questions, I'll be happy to help you.
Here is another screen of mine, and a very short instructions at the end of the description: http://mycolorscreen.com/2014/06/02/green-46/
The same way to make the ReDark screen, just use the ReDark files.

Which application showed the error?
This is the folders:
Copy Lightning Launcher eXtreme template to /sdcard/LightningLauncher/
Copy Zooper Pro templates to /sdcard/ZooperWidget/Templates
Copy toggle button files to /sdcard/Android/data/com.bartat.android.elixir.KEEP/iconpack/Green ****** This folder (named "Green") may be different, but you need to make the elixir widgets (I cant save the templates) and set this folder for use. But Elixir Witgets simple to use.
