[TIP] Going back to stock EB13.! - Epic 4G General

Okay guys, So lets say you flashed a custom rom on your epic. The rom was crap and you didnt like it. So you boot into CWM or w.e your Custom Recovery is and you restore your backup. After the backup is restore you end up with the Samsung Boot Logo STUCK.! This can be caused by incompatibility within the roms. Nandroid restore dosent always work when reverting back to stock from a custom rom, Unless your nandroid back up is from another custom rom. So this is a tip or flashing you phone back to Stock EB13. Its even better if you have a stock nandroid backup because restoring the backup whilst having this stock rom installed will work.! Go to this site http://www.samsdroid.com/2011/11/samsung-sph-d700-epic-4g-stock-rom.html and download the stock rom of your choice. Place the rom on your SD card. NOTE: Use sdcard in another phone since yours is bricked, or if you have a Micro Sd Reader use that. Boot up into Recovery and flash the rom. Congrats you are now back to stock and can do a Nandroid Restore. No ODIN, NO HARD WORK.! Happy Flashing
LINK FOR SW UPGRADE if the above method dosent work for you: http://ifile.it/8alqt5h/Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13_Tool.exe

Did you check the links before you posted this? They're all dead.
And they're all links to leaked firmware, not stable ones officially released by Samsung(With the exception of EB13).

The links aren't dead when I check them. If the links didn't help you out. Then google "Sph d700 SW upgrade tool" Its a utility that automatically flashes phone back to stock EB13. Just put the phone into download mode, by holding. "1" button on keyboard and hold power and plug in the pc. Follow the on screen instructions. If you can't find it PM me and ill upload it to 4shared for you to download.

I am by no means an expert but... If you are coming from an MTD ROM, you have to use the victory.pit file to repartition the NAND back to BML. To my knowledge, there is no way to do this from CWM (is the recovery partition rewritten when repartitioning?). If that executable linked at the end of the post can reproduce the partitioning that Odin does, then yes, but you still must have the windows drivers, a good USB cable and be plugged into a good USB port. At that point, why not use Odin.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

You are indeed correct. The SW upgrade is the linked .exe for inexperienced user. Not everyone knows how to use Odin. Yes it may be simple to us but a pain to others. Im pretty sure if people are flashing roms, the samsung drivers should already be installed on there computer. The sw upgrade comes with the DOWNLOAD MODE Driver, So that when you plug the phone into the computer whilst in download the drivers are automatically installed. Within a couple of clicks you are back to stock EB13. From there you can re-root using the one click and do Nandroid Restore.

There is already a guide for this

There are but there all explained in different ways. This is the easy way to explain the method above. Just download and follow the instructions. Alot of people are using odin. And alot of people are struggling when using it because of the lack of knowledge. So Im just putting this method back out there to remind users that this is also possible if you do not understand odin.

I agree with this but 90% of people here are on MTD and will brick by doing this. Also, when recovery works you can just flash another ROM. Still a good guide.

Thanks, And i actually flash other ROMs if i end up with a brick. But the first time i flashed CM9 i missed a step and bricked, and it wouldnt let me flash another rom without the samsung screen hanging. So i used this utility to get back to stock, root, and restore backup. Great tool for people who still enjoy great ol' BML. Thanks for the compliment. By the way love your theming dude.

Clockwork Partition Bricked, need help

i've been lookign and looking, and just can't find a solution to fixing my problem, not knowing any better I attempted to partition the phone through clockwork and now it no longer fully turns on (goes black after the S screen) and I've tried installing the stock Rom with Odin but it just simply does the same thing, is there a way I can delete the partition I created? i'm pretty sure that's the problem, but i'm not sure how to detect the phone's internal memory without having the phone on and mounting it...
Are you using the 512pit file and selecting repartition in Odin. Also which Odin flashable are you using. Go to Eugene's site, google ebproductions and find Froyo that doesn't brick.

Yeah, eugenes froyo that doesn't Brick + the normal jfd will get you back.
Basically, you are bricking your phone to fix it

so are you saying to get eugene's froyo on, then do the install for the normal (i.e. the link i provided), and it should work?... hopefully...
if it doesn't (working on it now), is there a way to mount the internal memory onto my PC without the phone working, kind of like download mode? so that I could just simply delete the partition

Help getting ROOT+CWM on GB without ODIN

I am trying to find a way to root and then install CWM without using ODIN. I tried this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062395 but Gingerbreak.apk does not work for me (which from the date, I kind of expected...)
Currently running EI22 GB with kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 KERNEL from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307980.
If that is not possible, is it possible to restore a NANDROID backup in my current state? I could go back to my backup from EB13, which was running fine and was rooted and had CWM.
Background:
I can no longer get my EPIC detected on my computer. I hesitated on posting on this, because after hours serching, I read hundreds of posts stating "IT'S THE CABLE!". I knew that, because last year when I got the phone, I had cable trouble as well. I found that the cable from my original EVO worked fine. Since then, I have used the same computer, same USB port, same cable and same phone successfully through many ODIN sessions.
Well, that all ended abruptly. I had not flashed the phone in a while. I had EB13 running fine. Tempted to get my hands on some GB, I decided to update.
For about 1.5 hours, everything went fine, including using ODIN with the tried and true setup that had always worked. It worked as expected through these steps:
1. ODIN stock EC05.
2. Was going to ODIN "[REPACKED] CWM + ROOT + BUSYBOX|Odin flashable EI22 system with ec05 modem" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340385) ... but I saw the OTA update and since I had seen this video by QBKing77 (How to root the Samsung Epic 4G on Froyo and Gingerbread - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWOLEXqAeCc), I thought I could do that from stock GB... Hindsight being 20-20, I think going to the "CWM + ROOT + BUSYBOX|Odin flashable EI22" would have been better....
3. After OTA GB completed, went to install CWM. Found that I needed to follow this: How to Root and Clockworkmod the Samsung Epic 4G on EI22 Gingerbread - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE.
From step #3, I tried to ODIN kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307980. That did not work, I got a failure. I then found the kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 file (without the "a" after the "3") which was mentioned in QBKing77 video, so I tried that one instead. That flashed successfully in ODIN.
After the phone rebooted, I powered off again, in order to restart in download mode and ODIN the recovery.
This is where the problem began. I did not get the COMM port to light up in ODIN. I was a bit puzzled, because I had been using it fine for this session and this setup had never failed... Rebooted back into download mode... nothing.
From then on, I cannot get the phone to be detected on 4 computers (3 laptops, 1 desktop) using 6 different cables on any USB port. Tried the ##8778# to see UART was in modem and USB was PDA (not sure if that even matters for ODIN, but I was willing to try everything). I tried pulling the battery for hours then trying again. I tried without SD card. I tried while holding my breath... no dice.
I think the USB port on the modem might be bad...
Any option I have not considered?

Wouldn't questions go in Q&A not general? Also couldn't this be moved not deleted?
OP: I don't believe there is a way to root without odin on gingerbread. If you do have a backup and you can get into recovery I would say load that backup and then flash a custom gingerbread rom. Weird that you tried multiple cables, ports, computers, and nothing. Did you try to re-install drivers? USB Mass Storage doesn't work? You could try to take it to sprint but I don't know how you'd go about getting it repaired because I don't think telling them that odin won't see it is a good idea. Good luck bro!

Folks, I only posted in this forum because I thought I would need a manual workaround or perhaps a code change for my scenario to work. These would need to be implemented, thus developed.
This is because I spent hours over a few days trying to find a solution on XDA or elsewhere. Since I did not, I felt that a general solution was not available.

USB Mass Storage does not work. I did not try to re-install the drivers. I did have to install the drivers from scratch on the other 3 computers (one 64bit, two 32bit).
I thought of talking it in for repair, since it is stock and Mass Storage does not work. If there is no non-USB solution to be implemented, then this will likely be my only choice.

Don't be so sure. I had this exact problem and after buying 2 separate data cables it still didn't work. Then a coupe of weeks ago it randomly started working. I've never used odin. You can find roms that install cwm and root your device via flashing.

You could literally destroy a popular rom thread with those...
These are my steps I use if I ever completely screw up
1. Go to a computer I haven't used before or I know I haven't messed up the drivers on
2. Install the drivers
3. Use the ec05 .pit and .tar.md5 from the brick recovery and flash using odin
4. Let the phone boot then shut it down
5. Flash latest cwm through odin
6. Flash zip of prefered rom, and now I add in updating to ei22 modem.
These steps have always worked, even when I bricked my phone so bad I didn't even get the samsung boot screen. Also when flashing zip of rom don't forget the x3 wipe procedure. Safety first, lol.

Agreed. The cable was working for over a year. I keep it only for data transfers, since I have not gotten other cables to work. Perhaps it broke...
However...
I tried it again earlier today, using the original setup that always worked. For the first time since Wednesday I heard the glorious sound that Windows plays when a USB device is connected/detected. The device was showing up fine in Device Manager (Samsung something... can't recall right now...). Disconnected cable, booted into download mode, reconnected cable... FAILED again. Cable and/or port on phone may be going bad. I will be stopping by a Sprint store to see if the can get it to connect with one of their cables...

It may sound stupid but it was probably the reboot. I've found it to be 100% the case that I have to reboot before trying to have odin recognize the phone in download mode.
If you are like me and don't turn off your pc...like ever (sleep/hibernate don't count) then the reboot when installing drivers is where my money is.

There is a program I saw that can remove old USB drivers. It is USBdeview. I've seen it over at www.sdx-developers.com in the Epic forum(not Epic 2) General discussion, Rooting 2.3.5 on stock?. The link is http://forum.sdx-developers.com/index.php?topic=18556.0
I am having the same problem with mine. It's NOT THE CABLE! The usb port on the Epic 4G is known to break, Sprint buys a special repair kit from Samsung for this particular issue I hate to say it, but you have to take it back to sprint for repair, if it is rooted i recommend opening up the phone and breaking a resistor and rendering the phone inoperable. That way they will give you a new one no cash involved. :-(

{HELP!!} Theme Bricked my Wifi Only Tab

Hello, a theme ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328950 ) did brick my device, am using Task650 version 10 ROM WiFi only model 16GB, i installed the "Layers In Paris V3 theme zip file over his rom and now my device get passed the the booth animation, i wiped/reset factory setting, wiped dalvick, cache, and wiped system, it wouldnt get passed it, now i formatted system from recovery and it won't get passed the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 writing you see when you power the Tab on, i need help on what to do because i can't even access the memory to load a ROM zip to reflash it.
someone wrote to me "to set up adb which lets you push files to your tab"
So the question is this too
What is adb ? "to set up adb which lets you push files to your tab" When i went to mount SD card in recovery, the systems keep telling me that "E:unable to open ums file lunfile (No such file or directory) Couldn't open directory," Then what do i do to load new ROM and flash it again or get my tablet working ? Please i need help here
Well you've just learned rule #1 the hard way. Always do a nandroid backup from CMW.
You could restore back to stock using ODIN. All the files you need are in the How To Root thread.

Odin restore will return your device (ROM AND RECOVERY) back to stock. Just boot your tab into download mode then connect to your computer with odin running and you will see a yellow box showing your device is connected. If it doesn't detect it, you need to get the correct drivers.

Try going into download and Odin flash the stock ROM again.
If the stock ROM flashed correctly, after up to a 10 minute wait, it should boot into the stock ROM. Then you will go into download again, Odin flash either the recovery from that link or the newer recovery from the below link. You should be able to place the Rom of choice on the SD and flash through recovery.

Looks like I bricked the phone

I had put on the ICS 4.0.3 from the google code project.
It worked fine, but I wanted to go back to my fully functional phone. I earlier had darky's 10.2.2 EE.
For going back to Darky's, I downloaded the latest pakcage 10.4.2 and went into CWM. It failed to update. then I tried wiping the cache etc, then also it failed to flash the package.
Then I tried using CWM's restore and wanted to go back to image prior to darky 10.2.2.. that also failed.
now when I rebooted system, hoping to do a factory reset, the phone is not booting up.
I tried connecting odin in download mode, that odin cant see the phone, even though the download mode is visible on the phone.
need help, seriously, and urgently...

If you have download mode you will be fine, its only a soft brick.
If its not recognizing your phone in download mode it means drivers are not installed properly, download kies from Samsung it will install correct drivers.
Try again full stock gb rom with Odin and reparation selected.

First of all, I think that you wrote in the wrong forum, should be in General section.
That said... if you can enter download mode, then your phone is NOT bricked.
Just install (or reinstall) Samsung USB drivers for your PC, and Odin will connect again.
Edit: I tought I was the first to reply but it seems others were quicker in that

If you have download mode you will be fine, its only a soft brick.
If its not recognizing your phone in download mode it means drivers are not installed properly, download kies from Samsung it will install correct drivers.
Try again full stock gb rom with Odin and reparation selected.
Also post in help next time.

How do you say your rom is called...?
Enviado desde mi GT-I9000 usando Tapatalk
Apologies for the wrong forum, I guess I was too panicky...
Now I found a solution, use odin with a different computer (which had the drivers etc set up), then get this rom
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-darkyrom-10-2-resurrection-gt-i9000.4272/
flash it using the instructions given, and wow, the phone is back to life.
After that, I I upgraded to Darky's 10.4.2 and it looks good so far..
Thanks for the help, tips, ideas and the patience for my mis-placed msg in this forum.
what would I do without open source community ?
love you guys

Reported as junk. Because people are serious and you are not more clever than anyone here.
This document from my ROM project.
You need to start from "How to install JVU stock Firmware" part and stop at installing GamerzRom step.
Please report this thread for moving it right place. Be careful mate. You can't switch from Cyanogenmod and ICS to Samsung based roms from CWM. You need to flash original rom with repartition again.
If your PC doesn't see the device, try Ubuntu live cd or Virtualbox. You can flash your phone with heimdall on Ubuntu. If you need help about this just PM me. Take care mate.

Just to make you know. You shouldnt flash any stock based from over cm/ics rom, because it runs on totally different partitioning and file systems.....flashing this will most likely cause soft brick....next tikme use Odin if coming from cm/ics roms to stock ones

I recently rooted my S3 i747 and then installed cyanogenmod 10. Keep in mind I am not a wiz at doing these things, however it did work. Here in lies my problems. 1. I hate this OS with a passion. Its just not what i thought it would be so I would love nothing more than to figure out how to remove it and return to stock firmware or another custom rom. 2. If i stay with this rom (for not being able to figure out how to remove it and install another) I am running out of storage internally. Its a great possibility I could have done something wrong. so with that being said, can anyone help me? I have tried more websites than I care to. thanks so much!
backup?

Well what I did was follow along a youtube video... Which in turn may not have been the best idea. I remember doing some sort of back up on clockwork or something like that. I tried to go to recovery mode and restore but that didnt help. Im not sure what all I did to be honest. :/

edit... Pull the battery on your phone and put it back in. Hold up vol, home button and Power till you see the little words in the top left corner. It should say booting recovery really small. at that point take your finger off of the power button only and it will boot into Recovery.
If you have CWM recovery or TWRP you are golden...
Or else... see below
Find your phone in it's section you should be able to find a method using Odin to flash it back to stock and then you can read up and find the way to do everything you want.
Just do your research and look through the forum for your phone type/carrier and you should be able to find all of the information that you are looking for.
Search and you shall succeed!

why do you guys make things so complicated? the guy wants his phone back to stock.
The only thing you have to do is to go to www.sammobile.com/firmwares. Then put your phone number i9100 in the search box and choose any of the roms below. They are all stock, 2.3/4.x.x etc. The rom is in a zip file, however, you have to extract the tar file inside it.
Power off your phone then, while holding vol down, press and hold power.
Open odin in your pc then connect the phone to pc while being in download mode. press the pda button in odin and insert the .tar rom whoch you have just extracted. press start and you are done.

Well returning to stock is just as easy as finding a stock ROM in his phones thread and flashing it, it'll be better in the long run that way as well because maybe he'll learn something.
