[Dev] easy way to update Roms - Xperia Arc General

soo as some of you might have seen on the homepage of xda someone has made an app that allows anyone to update their roms through their PHONE! of course the developer must follow a couple of easy steps to set it up. it would be great for people like me that dont always have access to their computer. it's basically OTA updates for your Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1590170
it would be great if devs at least read this post

Looks cool. I second the request but it does mean that the devs setup some kind of server to check it instead of just uploading the ROM. It also means more testing for the ROM's before you can simply put it up to prevent bricks, so I guess it would not work for all beta's

Tools to make your own cupcake rom?

Anyone can put a brief discription and the tools to make your own cupcake rom? Any help will be appreciated. I want to learn to make my own roms as well. Thank you.
It isn't easy as you think.
You must edit the source code.

are you talking about something like the PPC kitchen for windows mobile users?
if so, i was once a winmo guy. before android obviously. In my opinion if you are talking about something like the kitchen to point and click what apps you want your rom to have stock. i think it will be quite some time before we see something that in depth for two reasons.
1. It will require root. which not everyone feels comfortable doing.
2. The people who do have root and are flashing roms probably flash roms as soon as haykuro, the dude, or JF drops something. we cant even make up our minds about what rom we want yet lol.
In thought of the second reason it would be a great idea to have a "kitchen" type program for the PC that people can just point and click what rom they want the pc to push to the phone either by way of ADB or update.zip methods.
Plus on top of that... its not like there is anywhere near the amount of apps that winmo has to choose from just do do the same things.
again... in my opinion. it will be quite some time. Till then... (and more importantly back to your question) At the moment, the only way to build a rom is to compile it yourself. Check out all the reading you can do at www.android.com and get an idea of what you are getting into. Id love to see more people getting into development.
Yea i wanna compile my own rom actually. SO, I wanna get a breif discription and find the tools for it
www.android.com
happy reading.
I was thinking of getting a 2nd G1 as a 'test subject',,,, wouldent be a total waste of £165 quid, and then if gives me something real to develop on and troubleshoot on the fly
£165? Where'd you get that figure from???
And on the making your own cupcake ROM, you should follow the thread about compiling from the latest source for your phone, you'll learn a lot there and eventually get used to compiling your own aplications. Learn a bit of java and you'll be able to edit the source, get some custom apps working.
Thanks for ur input guys.. Im learning java development in college next semester so, ill be cooking up andriod roms after that for future devices
Easiest way to make your own rom atm with minimal technical knowledge is just taking a rom from JF, haykuro or thedude, unzipping them and adding/subtracting things that you want (adding a theme, removing or adding certain apps, adding tweaks, adding onscreen keyboards, etc). You then sign the file and put it on your phone.
Use this to sign the update (must have the SDK):

Eris ROM spreadsheet and Root how to

I put this together because I thought it would be nice to have a step by step how to on root, without all the confusing options. This is how I rooted, and I'm not saying it's the only way, but IMO the simplest.
I also put all the common ROM info in one spreadsheet. I put some of the common things people need to know on there, like is it a 2.2 or does it have sense. Feel free to add or edit your favorite ROM on the list. Or if you have anythings I should add let me know.
http://sites.google.com/site/rootingguide/
thanks,
-Keith
Not bad at all. I really like the format you used, simple and concise. Each ROM seems to have it's own instructions but they all pretty much say the say thing. I would recommend your instructions to anyone.
Are you open to suggestions? One thing you might want to add is an FAQ or troubleshooting section. When I first learned about rooting and installing new ROMs I was always running into little issues that most of us now take for granted.

Flash it with Wildpuzzle?
You could flash it with a new ROM like wildpuzzle or similar if you want sence. You can see this thread for available ROM's:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822181
I followed this guide to flash the ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396
Hope it helps
howzit bud!
it's going to suck heavy for you if you download the actual froyo update, because you wont be able to root your phone again (unrevoked hasn't come out with an update that works on froyo)
Flash the SUnaAaBh v1.1.. it's basically the same and it's getting great results
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=879032
Thanks for the info guys, I like the sound of Sunaabh froyo + root

SUnaAaBh v1.1 is just as unstable as every other custom ROMs. It crashed everytime I ran it. Its just publicised incorrectly by the guy as best ROM. If you actually read the post you might find the self-praise disgusting, maybe.
Its up to you in the wild puzzle thread there is an un touched froyo update. Just flash it like any other custom rom.

I am pretty sure you are doing something seriously wrong. I have tested most of the custom ROM's out there (Currently on WildPuzzle coz I kinda prefer LWP and Sense), and, they have never (hardly, if ever), crashed on me.
Besides, I just checked the Sunnabh thread, it hardly looks like self praise. Most of them have just said the exact thing the ROM author claims his ROM does, that it is stable. That said, if you are not satisfied, kindly move on, and, dont bad mouth the ROM author. He is not obliged to provide you with "stable" (as per your definiton) ROMs.
Get the OTA FroYo update, and enjoy your Wildfire.
Cheers

Then what's all the patches for, mate ?
You picked the "works perfect" posts and quote it in first page.
How about I quote all the "not working" posts and "do you have a patch" posts ?
Your work should speak not the keyboard. Its totally unwarranted from your side to do anything like that. I have never seen any other developer design such a page.
PERIOD? Ya, period.

If I read the thread correctly, I think it is written as "ADDON PACKAGES and INSTALLERS". And, I guess, the name should be enough for you to know the meaning and the reason for the "patches", i.e., they are not bugfix packages or anything, but, additional functionalities which are upto the end user whether they want to install it or not.
It's not that if you dont get the patches, the ROM will crash on you a thousand times (If you do everything properly ,which, most of them have).
That apart, patch requests are again requests to improve the functionality and add convenience features, not bugfixes, which I came across the thread.

You Please do that show me all the non working posts.. but make sure those posts were there coz of the ROM and not because someone did an error in installing if you have guts find all the non working posts and show me.. and for your info most posts are requests for addons .. Now dont make me angry i am not forcing you to use it..
you have not seen any other developers design such a page ..hmm thanks i know i am a pioneering person .. Huh have you seen alpha centuari ? does that mean it does not exist .. And Learn some etiquette please..

ANYWAY BACK ON TOPIC:
I noticed that the app called "SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse" (google it) has an option for unrooting...I haven't personally tried it (ended up using Unrevoked Linux LIVECD to root).
Let us know how it goes.
I noticed everyone is just focusing on flashing the wildfire with custom rom. Isn't there other ways like faking the signature so the update can still be installed?
I have the same problem, when I tried the OTA update it fails with message "invalid signature". I guess the rom installer is checking the signature of the currently installed OS.
Maybe one solutions is to restore the original HTC 2.1-update1 rom then run the OTA froyo update. Then in the near future, there will be root solutions for Wildfire froyo.

2. Enable Exchange Active Sync
3. Enable AD-Hoc Support
4. Enable NTFS Support

Needs some additional work though especially around how to configure for a specific type/brand of modem.
Thanks
FINALLY a AdHoc that works, many thanks for the file and the instructions. I tried some of the others several times with no luck.
pretty cool thanks for making it easy to find the good work the devs are doing.
Thanks for the how to's
First off, let me say thanks to all you developers and all the hard work you put in.
I am a complete noob to Android, rooting, and custom ROMS. I bought the A500 to travel with to complete simple paperwork, internet, emails, and watch movies while in the plane. I travel a lot so this makes it more compact than my laptop.
I have been following dc13's ROM thread and have to admit I am quite interested. It seems he has managed to greatly improve the battery life which is very nice for me.
My question, any chance to get an A500 Noob section for the stuff we noobs are new to? I have tried reading various threads and write ups from searches but even though itvseems like rooting shares some similar techniques, there is a bit of device specific steps also. I am interested in being able to do simple things like remove apps, try out ROM's, and even do backups. Today I downloaded apps; Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, and Busy Box because it seems those come up a lot. After reading the warnings for BusyBox I decided not to mess with it. I did try to run a simple ROM backup today on ROM Manager and got the !triangle.
I have rooted, using the directions on here. I guess it worked, but when I went into settings and tried to delete Social Jogger using the file manager app, it said I did not have permission.
So as you guys can see, it would be nice to find device specific support for us boneheads who want a bit more freedom, without needing to know all you Devs know.
Any help would be great. I am just not sure which steps to take in which orders and also which apps are required to do what I would like to do.
PS: any idea if these A5's are able to get Swype?
Sorry so long. Thanks again for any and all help guys!
Thanks for this thread ...
I am still unrooted due to the fact that we have no easy way to revert back to stock ( revert to stock for dummies ) ... and the locked bootloader.
this is due to Acer making too many different versions of Build# and Kernel # for various countries of the world ...etc
Why can't we just have 2 versions like the Asus TF do ?? 1 for US region and 1 for WW region... sheesh !!
Could you please add a link to an easy way to restore to stock ( once that becomes available ? )

You have to mount the file system as rw... If you are using EStrong File explorer for example, you have to give it ROOT access before it can write to your /system files. Go to the settings and scroll down to the root portion. enable that... then go to the folder where you have the file you want to delete... and... delete it...
BE CAREFUL DELETING THINGS FROM YOUR /SYSTEM/APP FOLDER AS THIS HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BRICK THE DEVICE... Good hunting! jejeje

Your Developers Need You

Developers always need access to reliable testers to make sure the quality of their work is fantastic. However finding decent testers can often take too much time, as unfortunately not everyone knows how to be a reliable tester.
This is why I have started this thread. It will not teach you how to be a tester, however it will say what you need to be able to do to be a tester.
It will also allow other developers to find willing and reliable testers who post in this thread.
So.. What is expected of a tester.
Patience:
Obviously everyone wants to get things fast, and testers are normally first in line for the latest and greatest. However we can't just hit a button and it's magically done the next second.
Knowledge in how to do stuff
Stuff is such a vague word.
You need to know how to take decent logs (logcats, kmsg's, etc).
You need to know how to use adb and fastboot reliably.
You need to know how to flash a rom, (a bonus if you know how to fix a zip if it's not built properly).
Speak the native language of your developer fluently.
This isn't required, but it will speed up the testing process a lot.
How to change individual system files quickly.
This would be for hot patches. So if gps is spamming massively, the developer will send a file that will stop gps logging as much
If you can manage everything in the above list, the great! post on this list with the words "Hey Ho, I can test!". It will enable developers to search those words and find all willing testers.

Open placements for testers
This post will contain any open positions to be a testers. Message me if you wish to add to here
Bring ups for rom. Things required:
know how to take backups, and restore phone from softbrick
know how to flash a rom, and fix any issues in the flashing process
know how to take logs
reserved
There are currently 3 known variants to the Moto E. There may be more out there.
We will need testers from each variant so unified builds can be done
Well I'll surely test as soon as my device comes to my place
EDIT: For Logcat, I'll recommend new users to follow thisguide
I m in first priority is the custom recovery and then kernel source code

I need someone to test a Xposed Module.
It is a theme in best description and works like T-Mobile themes for CM and other such roms.
Simple Install, activate in Xposed, Choose what you want to theme and what not and reboot.
Theme Name : Samsung TW Theme[S 5 Style]
Its still a WIP and many things remain stock.
Its stable though.
Anyone interested then please PM me.
Requirements : Your device should be rooted, you should have xposed installed and you must be eager to test and help.
Thank you to all those who extend their hand for help.
I would be needing only on tester. So once I get one I will post.
I have already tried it on my Galaxy Tab CM11 and its working good.
I haven't yet rooted my Moto E so need someone else to test.
