Dumb Flip Phone repurposed as a Cheap Bluetooth Handset - Hardware Hacking General

If I wanted to try and repurpose a flippy phone to slave to a smart phone, and be able to pick up and end calls, would there be a particular model or OSS base I'd have the best luck with? Like having a smartphone, but my parents don't, and I want to find something bulletproof. If it could it somehow dial out as well, I'd be set, but one thing at a time I guess.

This would be cool to have. I'm sure there are a number of Nokia or Motorola phones out there that would work with Android if you're skilled enough as a hacker.

Gonna dust this off. What other ways could one go about having a flip phone pair to take calls from your smartphone, outside of fabrication wholesale? I dunno any cheaply disposable phones that can be reprogrammed, and maybe the Raspberry Pi could work, but it seems like a waste to throw that much hardware at a device that can stick in your ear. Anypony?

This is an awesome idea, though I am not sure how you'd do it.
The best I could find was this:

Which I actually found for sale here, but I have no idea how reputable that site is...

Anyone know of anything better?

I have bought some basic stuff (no phones ) from at dinodirect.com and it was ok for was it was (cheep).

Okay, Nice to know that there is a commercial option, but is there anywhere I can get bluetooth headsets and clamshell cases in bulk? I know a decent amount a solder-fu, and a friend with a CNC, so I might be able to get some sort of kickstarter going maybe perhaps?

Looking to buy a TF, but I want to root it...

Hello!
I'm leaning towards buying an ASUS TF. From some of the posts on here, it looks like some models aren't able to be rooted. My question is, when I'm at the store buying the TF, is there anything I can look at on the box to tell whether that particular TF is rootable or not?
Also... would you buy a TF again now knowing what you know about it since you've had one for x amount of time? If not, what would you get instead?
Thanks in advance!
what the heck im feeling helpful today
yes theres is a way to tell right in store although the clerk may look @ you funny because they have no idea about this take a look @ the back of the box and look at the serial. ideally you want one that starts with B50 or B60. BUT if theres only B70 you may or may not be able to root. gimmie a sec and ill point you to the thread which explains it all in glorious detail....
not the one i was looking for but it'll do

Why are you selling it?
i have two TFs one thats rooted and one thats not. even though i cant root YET on second one i would even buy a third if i saw a need., the stock firmware is good enough, and just so you know they are getting closer to rooting all but the 3g models, hoping for root by years end for my B70k, i just want to run revolution HD on it for the speed of the rom.
Hey actually, is android revolution super fast? I mean, is there a benchmark/review between the three roms right now?
I've had my TF for about two months and I absolutely love it. If I was to buy another tablet I would probably get the Slider instead of the TF since I like the hideaway keyboard. I was thinking about getting it but didn't want to wait for months just to get it so I opted for the TF.

i havent seen any test but i have revo HD on one of my TFs and its faster then stock, and i also have it on my Inspire 4g and its been the most reliable and stable rom that i put on it.
I'm pretty sure at this point, you won't find anything lower than the B70's in stores. If I'm not mistaken, those were from the first few batches produced. Then again, I could be wrong. I should also mention that I have one of the rootable TF's and I've never had any desire whatsoever to root it. I guess ymmv / to each their own on that though

"Possible" SIM MOD

Ok First Off I will State These Things First To Get it Out of The Way.
Q&A:
In No Special Order
Q: What Kind Of Mod Is This?
A: A Physical Mod Of The Hardware & Or Software.
Q: Will I Need To Take Apart My A500 To Do This?
A: Yes And You Will Likely Void All Warranties With Acer By doing so.
Q: Will This Void Repair Coverage With Acer?
A: Yes See Above.
Q: Have You Tested This Mod?
A: No But Theoretically It Should Work.

sweet! Can we also solder in an fm/am radio?
I believe you are going to need more than just a sim reader, like a 3g radio/modem. If you search on here, somebody has already converted their a500 to an a501 by installing a 3g modem and sim card reader in his 500.

are you serious
This has been discussed several times.as this would be awesome if it could be pulled off.
With that said there is more to a similar card capability then just the slot. There are many required support hardware chips.not to mention the support software. But I will not mention there is no connector where the micro card slot goes.and no card.
So sell your a 500 and buy a a501.
Or get a main board from one that has been damaged check eBay.

You should have researched even a little bit before you came to this, it's like you didn't even try: it's mentioned hundreds of times here on forums that A500 does not have 3G modem at all, there are plenty of pictures of it being taken apart and you obviously could've checked your own A500, too.

The signs of "old", are in 2 places.
1, when the brain convinces the body it can no longer function.
2, when the lubricating fluids no longer flow.
As long as the previous 2 still work, hell, no problem.
Happy Holidays!

Fully functional Dummy S3, can it be used to make calls as well ?

Hey Guys, I came upon a fully functional S3 for sale. The shop keeper is ready to sell me the unit for half the price since it will do every thing except make calls. Now the weird part is , it does have a sim slot, but according to the shopkeeper it is a dummy unit which was used in stores for display. Phone fully works, both camera works, wifi works, it is the quad core version. Everything works except the call feature.
Now my question is, could it be due to hardware or software. If it is software related , then I am sure I can root it and install regular rom, but if it is hardware related then nothing can be done. I was ready to buy it and experiment but decided to ask here first. If it is hardware related then I rather not waste my money on it, but if it can made to work on cell network, then it is an awesome deal.
Check the imei, it's probably 111111111.
No you can't use it for calls unless you modify the imei, and you'd have to steal a functional one from someone else to do that.
It's against xda rules to talk about that too.

Definitely remember seeing a picture of a guys phone where it had a gap in the bonding process on the left hand side of the phone and anyway by the time they ship all the little issues should be ironed out.
Buy in April if you are worried about defects.
Defects are most likely to be found in first batch, no matter which smartphone you go for this includes Samsung and iPhones this is certainly my experience anyway.
Like someone said earlier if its defective simply get replacement.
I got mine on the 18th March and I can't fault it.
We had a thread where the advice was to worry about the later batches because the shortage would make them rush the manufacturing thus causing many defects in the construction. There also have been many concerns about the first batch citing poor build quality.
I haven't actually seen one in person yet but I've watched all the videos and read all the reviews. This phone is praised as being the best built mobile phone ever made. The design and construction, the machining of the aluminum body for example, are on a level I've never seen in a consumer product like this. The general impression of reviewers when they first get their hands on it is awe at how incredible it is.
Accept perfection for what it is, almost perfect.

This won't affect later batches as the shortage is due to the lack of camera components.
If you want to build 10 phones yet you only have 5 cameras to include on the phones why would you rush building all 10 then? Shouldn't you be focusing on the manufacturing instead while still waiting for the other 5 so the processing would still be in sync? Unless of course you wanna see your employees slacking/nothing to do because you rushed up finishing the 5 phones yet the other 5 cannot be made yet due to lacking of parts.

People like to have collections, its their money and they can do whatever they want with it. If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it.
I personally have Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 5 (Sold it though), Nexus 6. Nexus One, I skipped on it because I didn't have a developer account (honestly I could have gotten one) but I was happy with my T-Mobile G1.
I don't think it is pissing away money. i also still have my original iphone, 3g, 3gs, 4 and 4s. I like collections of electronics. people collect different things. Plus they don't take up as much room as other things you can collect. they all sit in one drawer in my office. Most of the I bought at a discounted price.
I use them all the time upgrading and jailbreaking. loading roms. and the such. reading about hacks and doing it on one phone to see the affect. I use them for test devices for hacks and new apps i get from xda. then if I like it. I move it to my main phone.
i do, and wait patiently to buy N6

Definitely this. This will look as dumb as collecting Nokia bricks in a decade, haha. May as well sell it and get some cash. That's more than one full priced phone right there. It is your money though.
I just collect the boxes. ? I have the original packaging from every phone I've ever had, except my HTC one xl. I was keen to get rid of that, and every possible trace that I ever owned it. ?
I have owned all but the nexus one and nexus 4. Well technically I put my Sim in before I sold it . I don't have any of them although I wish I did lol
I have a Nexus One, Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Xoom which was essentially the first Nexus tablet.
The only one out of the bunch which I would consider selling is the Galaxy Nexus. Asking prices for the Galaxy Nexus are around $100 - $200 so I might try to sell it for whatever I can get. The other two pioneered their individual categories and hold a special place for me and won't be getting sold for a while.

I even have the Nexus Q!
Got them all except for the first nexus 7 and nexus 10. I will probably buy them later on. Will post a pic later.
I've personally owned and used them all as normal devices except for the nexus one and nexus s.. Just bought them for the collection.
I've had all the Nexus phones except for the One. I only wish I could have kept them all!
As far as tablets I've had the first and second Nexus 7.
the only phone I wish I still had was my G1, sold it to a friend when I needed money and his daughter broke it
