[LOOKING AROUND] HTC One V ICS - Galaxy S I9000 General

XDA features such a good news for those of us who own SGS as their main phone and still believe in its power.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-one-v-rom-ported-to-the-desire-s-and-desire-hd/
For those who know little about this phone, it features a single-core ARMv7 processor (codenamed Snapdragon S2). Although it's sporting as little as 512MB RAM and a 1GHz clock, it can run ICS out of the box.
Maybe some good devs could look under its hood and discover the secret of its stability? I know, it's a pretty different device but the point is, it's a mid-range device featuring the latest OS from google (plus Sensev4 and Beats), while our phone, which probably is better than this, will not EVER.
I hope this thread can stay up front, so that some strong willed dev can read about this. Also, everyone feel free to post your impressions.

For what is this thread

1) Beat is ****. It's just an equalizer.
2) Sense is ****.
3) We are already running ICS

It looks like all previous posters misunderstood the OP. And it looks like the OP misunderstood Samsung.
When Samsung said that the Galaxy S wouldn't be receiving ICS because of hardware limitations, what they really meant was that they didn't want to spend the time and money on supporting a device that no longer makes them any money (really, how many people are buying a GS over a GS2?). We obviously already know that ICS can run just fine on our phones, hence the multitude of ICS ROMS available. Samsung just doesn't want to waste the money on a nearly 2 year old device.

Everyone knows that!
Samsung's support via e-mail stated that they won't implement TW4 on the Galaxy S due to hardware limitations...... Almost 12 months later... no ICS & unhappy users..... New ValuePack......JVU..... JW4!!=========>>>>> 99% Lag FREE TW4!!!
__LATER___
XDA Dev(s) proves that the SGS is more than capable of running a fully featured SGS2 ROM (excluds fancy panning features due to a lack of gyo sensor).

Galaxy SII or Sensation

My first android phone was Nexus One and after a year in December i bought Nexus S. Now i feel that i need a new phone or a tablet, right now i m little confused between samsung Galaxy s2 or Htc Sensation.
The reason i m posting is that many of you guys came from flavored to vanilla phone like Htc and galaxy. So i want to know which phone is devs favorite and has more roms and will be better for gaming and stuff.
Or
Should i go for Galaxy tablet or Asus EEEpad?
Go do your own research about Galaxy S2 vs. Sensation. People here at these forums prefer the Nexus S over anything. We get the Nexus series because manufacturers don't have any say in anything. They simply just provide the hardware.
Not being a jerk or anything, but we shouldn't have to babysit you one by one our opinions about what phone to get when we're already enjoying the one we already have.

It's a tough question because everyone has different needs.
I have used MANY Android devices, I'm almost ashamed to admit.
I currently have the Nex S, HTC Glacier and a Motorola Xoom and I'll probably be getting the SGSII soon.
The Sensation is really nice. I have the ROM with Sense 3.0 running on my Glacier now and it's pretty sweet, but I still would prefer the SGSII without a doubt.
So it's really a YMMV situation, based entirely on your preferences, needs and wants
However, I've heard the new Samsung Galaxy 10.2 is currently regarded as the best Android tablet out now. So I hope that helps.

It's really bad when you're coming to a respective forum and people are giving their own opinions about the phone when the REAL facts about the phone itself are on Engadget. These phones are made to fit a person's personality. One phone will please one person, whereas, another will knock it down because it's simply not what they're looking for.
Galaxy S2: http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-review/
Sensation: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/27/htc-sensation-review/
I'd go with the Galaxy S2. That's just me. Happy?
I just find it really rude to come here and start talking about two phones that have absolutely nothing to do with its respective forum. People here (especially Sprint) users just got the phone and it's making them have regrets in buying the NS4G because with this thread, it makes the NS seem like an obsolete device when development for the NS/NS4G is starting to boost.
Sensation XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1109
Galaxy S2 XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1055
Note: Going to one of those forums and asking the same thing, they will most likely side with their phone because its a biased post. Just like how I'm standing up for the Nexus S. However, it may be more informative since they ACTUALLY have the phone in their hand and can list their personal experiences with the phone rather than us providing our experiences based on our readings from tech blogs. Fair?
Quad-core phones are coming out later this year with the upcoming rumored Nexus device anyway, which will most likely be the flagship "Ice Cream Sandwich" device. The leaked roadmap for NVIDIA Tegra lists that Tegra 3 (Quad-Core 1.5GHz) will be released within this Fall.
And since the Nexus S is a Nexus device, it will be one of the first phones to get "Ice Cream Sandwich" (or whatever it will be called). Having that in mind KEEPS me on staying with Team Nexus. Because there's really no reason to go out of Team Nexus when Nexus devices are getting their updates directly from Google including a fully deoxed ROM being released in a short period of time. ESPECIALLY when these devices being released are not optimized for Dual-Core (or above) usage. It doesn't matter if it has a 8-core CPU, if the OS doesn't optimize those cores, then it really doesn't matter. That's the end of the story.
Anyway, enough of my ranting. I hope this makes you stay with Nexus devices because they are truly unique phones and people should learn to appreciate them more. We will get our updates faster than any other phone and to be honest, I don't trust any manufacturer that determines whether or not when I will get the OTA. Even still, CyanogenMod does a great job on keeping users at the highest Android OS version possible but a stock version of the latest will help. Especially when Nexus devices are un-bloated and built from AOSP for the most part.
GS II... hands down.

I would go for SGSII since it's a Galaxy S series phone, where almost everything is possiblility
man, you need to get both in hands to decide! since in real world specs means nothing! sensation has better resolution, buy s2 has mega hiper super amoled plus (or whatever samsung is calling it now)...
pick both phones and use it for a while, then decide!

Does it make me a terrible person that I want to pay full retail for that phone despite only having my ns4g for ~2 months now?
Why not just get a tablet. If your that much of a power user and need a new phone after a couple of months. Give your eyes a rest and get something bigger

I prefer the overall non-branded android phones hence the nexus S I currently have. Had an HTC before and got kinda fed up with the bugs/issues and SLOW response from HTC to provide firmware updates.
I've had the Nexus S since Dec 2010 and I've already had four firmware updates!
Friend at work has the SGS2 and its a nice phone.. though I'd prefer it without touchwiz naturally lol

Well the fact that Samsung gave a CM7 developer a Galaxy S2 to dev CyanogenMod meant a lot. I give Samsung more credit than they deserve regardless of how people criticize Samsung.
Motorola is just a no no.
HTC would be my second choice. I respect them for their commitment to "unlocking bootloaders." But the fact that they wanted to lock the bootloaders in their first place is shady.
Samsung doesn't really lock their bootloaders, its just fully open. And no, I'm not referring to the NS. The Galaxy S series wasn't even hard to unlock, just rename to update.zip and flash it in stock recovery.
I dont think so nexus 3 will be tegra 3 1.5 quad core so now i am thinking galaxy s2 or lg optimus 2x(g2x)
Nexus 3

yes, it makes, you are terrible! =oP
that was the main reason i came to nexus, i want to trade it only for a new nexus... this hardware race is insane! it reminds me the old times of PC: 166mhz, 233mhz, 300mhz... MMX, 3DNOW
just look for better battery life .. wichever provide u better battery..and i think almost all phone now days coming with dual core n higher ram..
if u dont really care about updates than just pick one, which looks n feel better
cuz there arent much higher upgraded features coming anymore soo 2.3 and above is all cool
SGS2 because:
Faster everything
Slimmer profile
internal storage plus micro sd
physical button on the front
not Sensation because:
Wifi Death Grip issue
Sense 3.0 = which is garbage and pure eye candy
nexus one was my first android as well, and coming from vanilla, sense > touchwiz for me. Actually, a lot of ppl prefer sense over touchwiz. thats what you should look into if youre coming from vanilla.
of course, you should look at the specs as well. i found that any hardware differences werent significant enough for me.
Even though i'm not a fan of touchwiz, i ordered the sgsii because its compatible with the network im heading to, and mainly bc it looks like samsung really brought their stuff together and put a lot of work into the phone...where as (while i'm not doubting the work put into it) the sensation comes off as merely a dual-core EVO 4g.
just my 2 cents.
I don't understand why people prefer Sense > TouchWiz.
Sense is ALL EYE CANDY.
TouchWiz, first thing that comes to mind is looking like iOS. This is true, but when you put TouchWiz launcher under the hood and use LauncherPro/ADW over it. It's actually a great skin. TouchWiz implemented new features such as the power widgets on notifications bar and added codecs to play 720p. The Camera App was amazing too.

Can't decide...

Read countless reviews and still can't decide.
Two things putting me off. The lack of ICS and Samsung take forever to get updates out (example my old mans galaxy s2 is still on 2.3.4 while my brothers Liquid Metal is on 2.3.6) Also the fact that quad core phones will be out next year.
My being picky? How are you guys gettin on with you' re notes?
Seeing as there is one phone in existence sold with ics on it, that is kind of a tough stance to take. Also this has nearly the fastest currently available processor, why do you think you need a quad core?
I guess you could wait till they stop making new phones, that way there is nothing better just around the corner. I heard that will be next year, so I would wait.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is just get a new phone every year. until the next best thing, the note is it.

You could learn how to root & install custom ROMs, so you never have to wait for the Samsung's updates.
If you could wait for a Quad core phone then wait for it. If you can't, then the Note should do you well.

I know how to root so if ICS was ported I could do it myself. I'm just being picky and making up excuses to not buy the damn thing I think.. I do want it but the Galaxy Nexus went back cause I couldn't stand the volume bug and the crappy build. Just looking for opinions really to see if this device is really worth it and if the size is a problem. Trust XDA users opinions over Engadget and other tech sites.

samsung arent too bad with updates, it could just be your device is locked to a region or carrier that doesnt update regularly.
my note was locked to the PLS region. it took 1-2 weeks longer than the other regions to get 2.3.6, but even so, its quite a quick update considering its a carrier branded device thats only been out for a month or so.
quad core phones have their strengths and weaknesses. the only advantage is in multitasking. you wont be able to use the raw power for a single app though aside from nvidia tegra 3 games. most PC apps are only now beginning to support multicore, i'd say android will take a fair while as well. when devs make apps, they make them so they will run on a wide variety of devices to maximise earnings. most people using android devices are still using single cores, devs will focus on maximising compatibility and improving performance on single cores first, so on a quad core phone, you may have one or two active cores with the other two doing pretty much nothing.
by the time the software catches up, you'd be stuck with a 40nm tegra3 that would burn your hands when a newer 28nm or 20nm cpu will be available and would be much faster and run much cooler.
i'd say just get a note now, enjoy the snappy performance of the apps samsung have optimised for dual core and the gpu and have fun knowing that you'll be using all you paid for in the phone rather than only getting half your money's worth with a quad.
As I know wildfires will not come out next year. There are coming some bastards 2x2 cores 2 at 1.5-1.8 and 2 low MHz cores so the battery live is increased when you don't need high usage of the cores. So don't think there will be much difference from the 2cores that are in the market atm. Maybe a better you on them will do the trick as now ics will provide hw acceleration.
Just my thoughts about that.

Galaxy S2 Development is dead.. NOT a rant thread

Well, This is the first time I make an useless thread in XDA, But I'm just really mad at how dead are the forums in S2 section.. Most of the developers moved to Galaxy S3, and I think the LG Optimus 4X and Transformer prime got a taste of CM10 already.
I've been checking twitter A LOT and almost none of the developers are working on S2, Codeworkx is working on i9100G and the rest on S3.
I'm not blaming the developers for leaving us, I mean not like they're forced to develop or they're getting paid. They're doing it for fun and some of them earn money from donations. And from what I've been reading, Jelly bean is hard to port on S2 because of the incompatible chips or something, they aren't open source friendly, but I mean, S2 is still in the main page as one of the most popular devices and actually no1 is trying to get CM10 to work on S2 /: when I saw Galaxy S3 I was like.. god that's an ugly phone and it uses pentile, the battery seems lame and they didn't use the dual core exynos that is faster, I don't remember the name of that processor, so i thought not many people would move to S3. I can afford a S3 but I think it's a waste of money when i have a S2 which is super fast and the screen is amazing, and to me, the design is better on S2.
IF you wanna post your thoughts about the development in S2 lately feel free, if not just leave this useless thread.
after all this is the general section about Galaxy S2. I'm just kinda sad and disapointed, when JB was released the CM team said it'd be super super easy to upgrade from ics to jb, again I'M NOT blaming the developers or trying to get anything with this thread, the developers are amazing persons that made a lot of things for our device already and i love em
has HTC seanstion got CM10? has Optimus 2X got Cm9 ?
So my dear foolish friend stop comparing ur phone with the latest ones and wait for a while !!
Sgs2 forum seems kinda dead in the couple of months and weeks lately and we can't blame the devs for having the latest toys to play with. Anyway, even though this is the general forum for sgs2 i don't think rant threads are accepted here. I have seen alot of threads like this being closed down. I suggest change the title and the message a bit in order for your thread to not be closed by the mods. I too want JB and so are the others, the best thing for us to do is wait for sammy or other devs to port JB in our device. Cheers!
Btw, by S3 you mean the U.S variants? Because the international version of Sgs3 has a quadcore exynos processor while the us variants have a dual core S4 processor.

i agree with you! but something else made me an impression, the sgs2 community are a bunch of kids (i dont mean you exactly). if i open a thread and if i type "moron", "retard", "idiot" or some other offensive name calling i get instant results! why is that? why does everybody call the other some name? are you better than the rest? no.. have you done anything to contribute to the community (besides being a huge SoB)? no.. then shut up.. the HTC community is much more friendly, and best of all people are always trying to port something.. here we find 20 different versions of aokp, cm9 and so on.. basically exactly the same, but they've added their preferred fonts, wallpaper and all that crap. it's like that because the real developers you can count on your both hands.. the other ones are a joke.. if you put different tweaks, kernel, modem and you theme a rom.. that doent make you a developer.. developers develop.. they make programs, port roms, make things that dont work or arent compatible - compatible and working.
THAT's MY opinion.. agree with it or not

I feel the same. But I am patient waiting for Samsung to release a source code and then CM10 will surely happen to S2 as well... I am also trying to trade my s2 with a Nexus but can`t find some one to do so. Anyways, CM is great and they are doing a great job. Keep up the good work guys!
Stop whining ...
It's kind of true ... thinks really slowed down a lot!
We might expect:
- official 4.0.4 rolling out july - august (for sure)
- official 4.1 this year (maby)
But cm10 undoubtedly will become a very good alternative due time, expanding life of my smartphone a year or even two.
I have no problem using my beautiful phone as a ... phone ... instead of using it as an ongoing development project
If one is addicted to a daily firmware fix ... then stop whining and move on to then next hot piece of hardware

I totally agree with your point on having different versions of the same ROM with only changed icons, wallpapers and other non sense stuff. No new feature addition or anything of that sort.
Thats why I'm either on Samsung's Official ROM or on CM9.....coz both of them are unique in their own way. Others are simply tweaks of these 2 ROMs only.
Sorry, I find MIUI pretty lame....
If codeworx would see this he would say blame samsung
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
No one likes to work on the S II. Codeworkx is working more on the i9100G because it's OMAP, lot more easier [and fking great, his words] than Exynos. The S I development is better than the S II, because the S I hardware is very similar to the Nexus One, so, nexus... you know. The Galaxy S JB will be better than the Galaxy S II JB. That's why, and more things, I really want to sell my S II and buy the Galaxy Nexus. The hardware of the Nexus is just a bit [really bit] lower than the S II. But with JB it just turns the Nexus a kickass phone, much better than the S II. Most likely S II won't get JB, even Samsung is tired of working on it.
So, +1 to your ideas.

SGS2 isn't flagship device. however even if Galaxy Note would be promised JB devs will get some blobs.
If I remember also the Galaxy Tab 2 and 7" variants are Exynos means some support could be get from those.

Pentile seems bad on a spec sheet, but in real life the implementation is stunning. Once I tried out the S3 I just had to have it, but I'm surprised how quickly everyone that used to be here have moved on to the S3.

Well if everybody has tons of money it's obvious!
Personally I bought my S2 a year ago and I don't have the money to buy an S3! I was so happy when they announced jelly bean, because I knew the S2 has a big community and I thought it would have seen JB soon, but now I'm realizing that the developers have abandoned our device! What can I say, I'm really really disappointed! I will never buy another non-nexus device! Never never never never! Just wait one more year, Samsung will release another super device, all the developers will move to that device (with the money that users donate....) and then the S3 will no longer be supported. I've already said it, and I'm gonna say it again, This is not the spirit of android!
>no one is working on jb for the S2
Not true, codeworx and espenfjo are working on it, plus other devs.

I say, just be patient and wait, it's not like CM will abandon the S2, it'll just take more time comparing to other, more open, devices.

the same happened to me.. i had a big hope and now i see everyone is getting JB and we havn't even started /: It feels weird you know, we're used to get all the updates and now S2 is dead. I also bought my galaxy S2 and since then i check the forums daily for updates, new kernels, roms etc, I've flashed over 100 roms or even more. Am I the only one that feels like the S3 isn't worth it if you have a S2? D:

Codeworkx is only working on i9100G I stalk his twitter a lot and that post is old but yea, we have to be patient and stop rushing the devs (If there r any still here)
But GT-I9100G is much easier to port since has a more open hardware, who would start from the hardest thing first and then leave the easiest for last? If it's easier you can get things done faster and later use the knowledge gained on the harder task.

Buy CM a N7100 for development.?

Is anyone up for the idea to start a collection to buy the CM team a N7100 so they can start working on getting us cm10?
When I spoke to xplodwild this was his reply
Guillaume (@xplodwild) tweeted at 7:21 PM on Fri, Oct 05, 2012:
@iseeguy Assuming someone do it, because as of now nobody have one neither wants to buy one.
I'm happy to organise this with the CM team to kickoff development
Who's thinks it's a good idea?
I've donated to previous initiatives and will again
Just an FYI:
I not only have no interest in purchasing a device, but if you gave me a free one and offered $2000, I would say no.
I have better things to do than waste countless hours of my time fighting another non-Nexus Exynos.
xplodwild may be more receptive to continuing with Exynos, but at least in the case of myself and codeworkx, we are done. Our current devices are going to be our last Exynos devices unless Samsung makes major changes.
This is why I'll keep my note 1
Already on Jb PA
Maybe when development for the note 2 is already a big boy is change for it. Probably not.

Really don't see any redeeming quality to putting cm10 on this device. The software makes this device what it is. Taking all that away makes it nothing more than a mini nexus 7. Nothing against cm10. It's great on most devices... But you are really devaluing the note by neuturing it of 75 percent of its features. This is kinda like running linux on a ps3. Yeah its neat to say you did it, but good luck playing a ps3 game.

I completely support this especially if its just for a dev to do it unofficially, but remember guys we can't hold the dev responsible for getting it done. You have to go into thinking your donating for the dev to have the phone and use it as they like not donate thinking your donating for that dev to be obligated to bring cm10. In the rezound forum we got a phone for protekk to help with aosp and people got demanding and were expecting him to bring it since they donated. This tore apart that community for a long time. So if you donate do it as a donation and not an expectation

I would say that Paranoid Android is absolutely perfect for the Note. S-Pen can be handled through different applications like GNote, Memo etc. The ability to run applications in tablet mode is such an enhancement of the device that I don´t see any single feature with the Note II that somehow "compensates".
I can agree that pure CM10 isn´t the most interesting thing on the Note II since it has the phone UI but Paranoid Android is a completely different matter.
Since PA relies on CM, it is very important to get it for the N7100 in order to get going.
Windowed applications is very nice but also a feature I guess will be implemented in either AOSP or CM in the future. Don´t forget Overskreen and FloatNote etc.
I thought at first porting CM10 would be easy in it's current state due to shared hardware with S3. I would understand if they dropped future exynos but this is an existing thing already with minor differences.
I would donate too if we can see a new maintainer taking on the device. Would be a shame not having CM on the device. It brings so much stuff for what it is and also other devs bringing their extra tweaks on top of it. A wonderful ecosystem I wanna to see and follow on xda and my device =(

Let's be honest here for just one moment, the Samsung S apps and the stylus are gimmicks that will be used once when the note is purchased then abandoned. I've owned the original note and now the note 2 and I never once pickup up the stylus for anything
What's more valuable is a fast, smooth and reliable OS
Just my opinion of course.

To you, but to many others (the majority of people) what Samsung is doing with features is why they are making the purchase. Honestly its mainly because of the new features as to why I'm going to upgade. I'll still have my OG note running PA CM10, which I love.

There's a difference between challenging, and utterly freaking impossible.
Challenging: Going through source and fixing bugs or adding new features. For example, for months I've wanted to try and rework the Exynos suspend/resume code to be more power efficient. (It locks cpufreq at 800 MHz and disables cpuidle for the entire suspend/resume cycle, which eats power. Also SOME interrupt service handler eats huge amounts of CPU on resume (the root cause of the classic Gingerbread "Android OS" bugs), and I'd like to figure out which one and see if it can be optimized.
Utterly freaking impossible: On a routine basis, figuring out what Samsung broke in their blobs and why it doesn't work the way it should. Trying to take totally broken nonfunctional source code and get it to work properly with zero documentation. See hwcomposer - unless a miracle happens, we will be continually stuck fighting blobs that Samsung gave us. Their blobs have some sort of significant magic not present in any reference source. The reference source creates a broken piece of **** that's almost indistinguishable from not having any hwc at all.
I've spent 10-20 hours or more per week of my spare time over the past three weeks fighting hwcomposer and making absolutely zero progress. I'm tired of flailing against a brick wall and getting nothing other than bloody knuckles.

No, porting CM10 won't be easy due to shared hardware with the S3. Have you noticed no Exynos device has M builds? Have you noticed that Exynos devices are almost always one of the last "flagship-class" devices to receive nightlies?
CM9 should never have been marked stable on Exynos devices - too many bugs remain and we lowered our standards for "stable" too much.
CM10 on Exynos is incredibly far from reaching M builds let alone a stable release and I don't think we have the manpower, motivation, or energy to take it to to the finish line, let alone the documentation needed to do so.
And what about CM11? The whole mess will just start all over again, if any maintainers are left on Exynos by then. Again, we'll be flailing against undocumented crap that didn't even quite work right with the Android version it was designed for, while those working on platforms that have proper documentation and reference source (OMAP and Qualcomm) will start moving ahead immediately. See JB on Qcoms - They took only a month or two to get ahead of where Exynos4 devices are NOW, 4-5 months after JB went live, and over half of the work those guys were doing was forward-merging CM customizations from CM9.

Then I wonder why did you buy Note at first place! IMO it's that S-Pen which makes this Note series special than other flagships like S series, and in Note II it has just gotten better.
And about your 2nd paragraph, say whatever, but kindly exclude the word 'reliable' from that list.

That's the primary reason I got my Note. Even if it didn't have a stylus I would've bought it for the screen.
Also, there are now plenty of pen apps that use the standard Android stylus APIs, so the Samsung-specific stuff is irrelevant at this point. For example, PS Touch works just fine on the Note 10.1 in AOSP. So does Quill, Papyrus, Memo Beta, LectureNotes, and a number of other apps.
The only thing beyond that which is missing are stylus gestures, and that's primarily an issue of manpower. I would've forward ported and cleaned up masiullah's pen gestures patches a month or two ago if there weren't a pile of other massively broken things unrelated to stylus.

"Reasons" to go for Xperia Z or s4 (based on past experiences)

I am not bashing or being a fan boy etc. to anyone.. being a tech lover and loving the xda community, this thread is about being open minded and discussing past experiences and taking decisions accordingly, not burning our hands again..
Friends,
The idea of this thread is to outline significant practical reasons on why to move ahead with Sony Xperia Z rather than samsung devices..for a lot of the viewers who are waiting etc.
I have been seeing a lot of view points on why we should go for sony and not samsung anymore.. but personally.. I have used all samsung galaxy flagships over the years, and I keep getting dissapointed.. and this time I finally had a realization that its time to move to better companies who really are serious about what they are creating and who listen to their customers and the community. So I have outlined a few quotes and reasons from elite recognised devs to users with their experiences below. If you have any pointers you would like me to add, please feel free.

It's sad how many sheep are falling for Samsung's misleading "Octa" marketing which (falsely) implies that the device has 8 cores of equal capability.
IT DOES NOT.
It is a quad core device, with four additional low-power cores. More proper marketing would be 4+4 (kind of like Nvidia's 4+1 marketing).
There's also no benefit to having four low-power cores... In any situation where you'd drop to the lowpower cores, you'll also be hotplugging out all of the extra cores. A single low-power core will provide nearly all of the power reduction benefits of a full set of low-power cores. Yes, it'll be easier to handle migration in software - but it's throwing a pile of hardware resources (hardware cost) at a software problem to make up for Samsung's utterly ****ty track record with regards to software integration and quality control. Heck, look at ICS on the I9100 - they couldn't even get basic cpufreq policy limit implementation right with that release!
Samsung's architecture doesn't handle asymmetric core loading well at all. If you have one core maxed out, and want to run some light tasks on a second core - guess what, you have to light up that second core and run it at full tilt. Samsung has a whitepaper that claims this is a good thing, but if you look at their architecture closely (check the cpuidle driver in arch/arm/mach-exynos of their kernels...) you'll notice a nasty flaw - All of the deeper cpuidle states are disabled if more than one core is active. This means that the second core is consuming almost as much power as if it were running at 100% load even if it might only be running at 10% load. Snapdragon can actually reduce the clock/voltage of additional cores that are active but lightly loaded.
Of course, the most important thing is software integration - absolutely awesome hardware means nothing if the software supporting it is ****. Look at the Galaxy Nexus - Thanks to Google and TI doing a great job of integrating the "Project Butter" capabilities of Jellybean, the Galaxy Nexus delivers smoother UI performance with a dual 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 than the GS3 can with quad 1.4 GHz A9s...
That is what you will get with the Galaxy S4 - Awesome hardware paired with utterly crap software, leading to an overall crap experience. With the Xperia Z, you'll get great hardware paired with great software - for an overall great experience.

If you love development and love open source, sony is the way to go, (also the chipset being similar to the nexus 4 ) not just amazing hardware but their developer relations team is amazing! they would be extending support to developer and community here at xda. Unlike samsung which uses cheap materials and does not have a real aesthetic taste with industrial design, their software department is really in a mess. They never releases driver binaries. Most of their code is outdated and has bugs. and lately each device software or upgrade comes with brickable bugs and security issues.
Those who are looking for hardware.. technology will keep becoming more compact and billion times powerful every month now, its exponential growth, so if we keep waiting for the next and the next, we will also be stuck in a loop of waiting. By the time s4 is announce, sony or htc would announce an even better phone.. so we would love to wait for that.. it is endless.
So the idea is to go for a device you instantly love, and not wait.. and go for a device where the OEM gives fantastic developer support!
how does one make a topic like this when the s4 isn't even out
i don't understand it
like is the fanboyism and anti-fanboyism within android communities this bad? that we can't even talk about one new phone coming out without talking about another one that you have no idea about whatsoever?
like really. the topic is called 'top reasons to get the xperia z instead of s4'
the s4 doesn't exist yet, is a starter. you don't know anything about it, is another. you have not even the slightest semblance as to what it could be like is yet another. the rest of the list kind of goes on in the same fashion.
why not wait for the s4 to be announced before making a trollbait thread like this?

Because Samsung didnt provide needed sources, same story was on SGS2 and is now on SGS3. Samsung promised them with deadline end of 2012, but as far as I know, sources wasnt released. Because of that, CM development on SGS3 has almost stopped and question is if SGS4 will get CM support. On other side, according to devs Sony support dev community, provide sources, so they can build more stable roms in much shorter time. That is a reason why I will try Xperia Z - hardware is good enough, looks very premium and I expect much better development on it.

Absolutely mate. its not about being a fan boy or not liking a company or something. I use apple, windows and android products.. and i love all of them..
I love technology and I love android and its open source environment.
The idea is so educate and make others aware of my or our experiences with samsung.. and I don't want others to go through the same experiences and pain which we have gone through.
Samsung is really bad with its development friendliness.. they are highly closed sourced and even if they release any sources, are very "buggy". They don't care about the development community .. all they care is selling as much as possible..
a lot of the users here might not know the issues samsung has towards development.. they don't care about anything.. just releasing phones in quantity and not focusing on quality.
The idea is to just let others know about the cores, and development status of samsung, after all people spend money and get dissapointed instantly.
The reason im definitely going for sony is, that CM and aokp upbringing is so quick and sony developer relation team is very friendly and supportive.. http://developer.sonymobile.com/
dont we love having the latest and greatest of android?
its always an issue with samsung in that case.

Will copy paste same reply that i just posted on Another thread..
1) Sony is pathetic when it comes to warranty and policies not just in the country i live but around the world
2) I laugh at people considering Sony as a company producing good looking phones.. May be u think so about samsung coz you're some designer or wannabe designer kissing ass looking looking for dream job.. Sony had some of the best designs only while it was Sony Ericsson.. But not after it became xperia.
3) Again, built quality of Sony isn't great either! May be their exterior phone housing is, but their components suck. Samsung is cheap plastic outside but solid quality components inside.. Which is what matters.
4) Stop being ridiculous and stop bashing samsung for not being developer friendly.. If you want that then go for nexus phone.. As simple as that.
Samsung is SLOW, yes.. BUT it's not impossible. Also one can't blame manufacturers for updates when Google is raining new os or updates. If u dont know why am saying this then you don't even deserve to use a non nexus device. I do blame samsung for being retard about their bugs and issues and what not...
Last but not the least.. Sony display suck a#& big time.. Their brava and bright engine is just cheap gimmick. I have xperia s with me right now. Their camera also suck specially while doing hd recording. Yet to see z in person, which should happen soon for me
Can't say much about Sgs4 coz its pointless to waste time on it atm.
Yes samsung was ridiculously cheap quality.. But their built on note2 is quite sturdy and strong. Have an s3 and note2 in the house next to mine and I've seen note 2 bashed by small kid while playing games on it and it's freaking rock solid.

I have a question for those who have had Sony devices in the past.
I have heard it is nice and easy to unlock the bootloader on Sony phones.
Now is this the HTC style of unlock where some things are unlocked but others are not?
Also is it easy to do on a branded phone? If I get this phone it will likely be Three branded.
Thanks

Your example was a Qualcomm-based device. The reason d2att is in good shape has NOTHING to do with Samsung and EVERYTHING to do with Qualcomm. Now that Qualcomm is selling baseband chips that don't require a Qualcomm host CPU, you're far less likely to ever see a Qualcomm-based Samsung flagship again.

Thanks

If your device is SIM-locked, it will almost surely NOT have an unlockable bootloader.
If it is branded but not SIMlocked it might have an unlockable bootloader.

Could you please elaborate on your past experiences with Sony mobile ? I have not owned a Sony mobile so I cant say anything. I am as much interested in this product as the next guy and I would not want to drop my hard-earned cash on something which is gonna conk in 1 year. Although, I own a Sony LED TV, PS3, PS2 among others and they have been pretty much solid.

I own an X8 which its still in good shape even after some serious drops. My father`s samsung galaxy s plus never dropped it on solid stuff ,only on carpet and that shiny cover around the phone scratches and sounds like s**t . Both phones bought new with warranty so no second hand

I will more than likely buy both the Z (if its avail in Canada) and the S4 but if Sony locks the bootloader it will make me think twice. I bought an ION over Xmas to use a back up phone and have some fun with only to find out I cant unlock the bootloader..I havent even taken it out of the box yet..no point lol and I will probably just dump it for cheap.
Samsung officially supports their 2011 flagship devices (S2, Note) with Jelly Bean. Sony is still struggling to support even their 2012 devices with Jelly Bean let alone the older ones.
All their support for CM / FXP is not worth a dime if the kernel / drivers don't support the features of the latest Android version. i.e. Project Butter.
So unless I see a drastic change in their firmware update policy, it will be the S4.
That's sad, because I think that the Z is one of the most beautiful phones I've ever seen with great hardware inside.

I kind of agree with you but I also agree with androidindian... I am now about 2 and a half years with Android and had 2 Samsung phones... They just are bad: non quality materials, bad support for developers and they take too long to update and when they do its mostly bad aswell... I agree that we can't talk bad or good about a phone that isn't even out yet but I can imagine that Samsung will not do a better job it did before^^

I agree with Alain, well I guess Samsung get's too overly populated since it's the world's widest company and they couldnt handle all of the costumer's feedback, updates etc but I think they're trying to cope up coz I can't wait for the S4. I think it's going to be a great catch. Sony is also good, especially it's now starting to have great features than before. Well, let's see what happens this year

samsung updated s2, note to jb but they have postponed the updates each month from november onwards.
plus their software quality is really full of bugs. brick bugs, security exploits etc. really bad quality
i would always prefer them taking more time and not have such serious bugs atleast, even after leaking roms beforehand..
sony might have taken time before, but their os quality is really good!
also.. their developer relations team and support for cm and xda devs is just too good!
samsung doesn't even want to listen to developers..

Hmm... I once had a Xperia Neo, which I passed on to my little sis and which I still do the maintainance for...
I have no grim against Sony but I don't share your enthusiasm either. (0% Bug, one-click rooters based on exploids, locked boot loaders,...) .
Time will tell.... I'll wait until all major companys have presented their 2013 flagships.

If I could just get some further clarification here.
If a phone is SIM-locked (as most branded devices are?) and I then pay the carrier to get SIM lock removed, will this free up the bootloader in the process?

Dude, I switched from s3 to TX and Sony's implementation of ics is 100x faster than Samsung's jelly bean. Samsung pushes for quick updates but very buggy and they haven't implemented buttery smooth on crapwiz.
