CM7 alpha 8 Review - Galaxy 3 - Galaxy 3 General

Hey guys! this is my first post on XDA and i have been using kyriloos v9.5 since pretty much tym and i thought i should give a try to something new!! i was really excited about Tom3q's FIMG 3DSE for the Galaxy 3! so i put CM7 alpha 8!
Advantages:
> Customizable Interface!(a major asset!!)
>Smooth Interface
>Nice music widget
>cool looking UI
>Performance tweaks
>A better benchmark(compared to stock) without any additional apps and without updating tweks (comes to 1177)
>camera is fine
>bluetooth works
>cwm works like charm
>1 ghz and stable
>no automatic switching off yet
>apps got to sd
>have 168 mb free internal memory when installed on partition
>i like the msging interface
now these are the good things but believe me i was more happy with Kyrillos rom v9.5
disadvantages:
>no video recording
>can notice pixels at areas where i never saw before
>some kinda glitches with the google apps that worked fine earlier
>no improvement in graphics even with FIMG 3DSE
>Angry Birds space has even more white patches than it had before
>i had many more options in Kyrillos when i keep the power button pressed
>and will update more soon
Stock Antutu Benchmark : 938
Kyrillos Antutu Benchmark : 1135
CM7 Antutu Benchmark : 1137
my advice : dont install cm7 now! wait for all the bugs to get cleared!! im sure cm7 can do much better!!

imo: it's an alpha version! It has MANY MANY mopre configuration since u have the "CyanogenMod Settings" and all the apps that support CM only(!) And basically with a few fixes (init.d script of kyrillos etc...) Cm7 is a BEAST compared to froyo!

Thank you for your response

i never said that cm7 does not have these!! my point is that it would be better to install it after the final version releases!! cm7 works much more better on phones like galaxy ace!! i would love to run an absolutely awesome final version of cm7 on my phone!! but until then im for kyrillos!! no offence!!!

Data network mode
i know that but it still misses the data network mode for which i need to go all over to the settings menu and do it!! i found it more comfortable in kyrillos!!
In CM7, you can get the data network mode in the notification bar itself or the power control widget. Go to CM Settings > Interface > Notification power widget > Widget buttons > Here you can choose whatever you want (Mobile data, in your case).
In fact this is better because you don't need to use your hard keys.

Thanks

Honeycomb 3.1 Initial Impressions

If Honeycomb gives every users a mind-blowing experience from Froyo and Gingerbread, Honeycomb 3.1 is quite a update in terms of user experiences.
It improves over quite a number of areas to fix the glitches from here and there due to a first generation OS release.
One phrase to describe it is
Smoothness and responsiveness.
I had a head-to-head comparison with iPad 2 (my friend's) and my Xoom last weekend.
While apps I can find almost what I need from both iOS and Android (tablet compatible), one observable issue is the screen and apps responsiveness. Even my Xoom at that time was overclocked to 1.5G thanks to Tiamat's kernel, it barely matched iPad 2's screen by screen browsing, web page browsing and speed of apps opening etc.
With this 3.1 update, I thought Google hit home run on this front.
Other improvements includes previous mentioned by other folks
1. Recovery boot option appears (from folks who updated "naturally")
2. Under system update , there is a button to hit "check now" , so that we don't need to change system time to force a check everytime.
3. Resizable widgets (Gmail widget tested) is very handy
4. other publicly announced improvements.
Still exploring features now, rooted with instructions from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073884
Thanks stachre!
Will post a quick review with more screenshots on website. =)
Happy xooming folks!!!
Along with your points, I like that the recent apps bar now scrolls as well.
The YouTube app looks awesome in HD.

Bluetooth sucks. My keyboard keeps dropping when the mouse is connected. Other than that this thing seems great. Just waiting for some new kernels to drop now!
The new Quick Controls in the browser are fantastic. Overall the browser is much more responsive.
I've also noticed the keyboard lag seems to be gone.
Other differences are minor....
- the selection carrot when typing is more green
- the keyboard clicks as you type
- the Wi-Fi icon shows when you are uploading, downloading
I'm sure I will find more but its only been an hour since I flashed.

I'm wondering if you guys could test and see if the portrait lag is still there?
When you are in portrait mode, does sliding left or right in the home screen still lag? Thanks!

Also in Market, you can choose "app content filter". Damn I can't select "High Maturity" alone.
Thanks jiwengan for the quick reply. Not exactly sure how I should interpret your answer though? Are you saying that there is no lag when in portrait mode anymore? Thanks again!
Can you actually rate apps in the market on Honeycomb yet?

Quick controls look just like the ones that were already present in labs.
do you still have to be rooted to use a screenshot app?
I'm liking the performance enhancements.
For the browser quick controls, just to go settings in the browser, advanced and google labs.
I don't see any addition to leave comments yet in the market though.

in labs? So what exactly changed in 3.1? People keep saying they love the new browser but i dont see it any diff?
Labs is a section in the browser options where you have a few options to alternate your UI for example. One of which are the quick controls.
And they changed a bit so they got even better. Just try them...

He got confused on your questions.
his answer number 1 which was no, meant that when you actually turn it from horizontal to portrait, it still lags slightly before changing the screen orientation..
and his number 2 was to answer your actual question, which according to him is yes, it runs smoother than before.....
I'd like to see this for myself, but I'M STILL WAITING!

Portrait is smoother, but still not as smooth as landscape on mine. The update is fantastic though. Overall performance is better. The quick controls redefine tabbed browsing to me. No complaints.
The quick controls are two "rows" thick now instead of 1 and there are a few more controls. It is more definitely different from before as I used the quick controls heavily and noticed the change instantly. Overall a much nicer experience.
Has media playback improved? I'm mostly interested in how HC 3.1 does with scene HD TV show MKVs (720p with H264/AC3).
Thanks.

What would your dream ROM have in it?

What I'd like to see a dev do is take the android source and one of the kernels (ScaryKernel stable preferably) and develop a ROM from the ground up.
Call waiting does not work properly in CM7 or another AOSP based ROM I tried.
GPS has problems fixing in that ROM as well. I believe Sense based ROM users don't have this problem.
What would be really cool is having a nice 2.3.5 ROM with ScaryStable kernel, Android 2.3.5, some, not all of the tweaks from CM7, apps included that are actually useful such as antutu benchmark, kernel manager, rom manager, super user, terminal emulator, speedtest.net, wifi analyzer, gps status, fasterfix stuff like that, HTC GPS drivers, and being able to update profile, and prl and being able to get to the ##code# menus from the dialer (basically need the HTC dialer for this I'm guessing which would also fix call waiting). That would be like the ultimate ROM in my opinion.
Thoughts? And yes, I'm actually thinking about taking this on as my own project if I have to even though I can't program to save my life.
What's a matter with call waiting on ASOP? I've never noticed anything messed up or anything different.....I have predominatly have had cm7 but also ran shiftdeck for awhile and call waiting has worked fine I believe....
I have read others having problems getting gps to get a fix but have never experienced the problem myself.....I know the solution has been to flash sense get a lock n then flash asop and from what I read gps is fixed after that....

Tap manage calls in CM7, tell me what happens.
As for GPS, I found a combination of resetting the GPS and downloading GPS assistance data with GPS status, and using faster fix and setting the proper ntp server while having wireless assistance on helps for a while. I'm still investigating exactly what needs to be done for GPS to to work properly.
I can honestly say I have never had a single problem with GPS on any cyanogen build but i never shut my GPS off I don't even know why It's on maybe for the weather so maybe that info could help someone maybe get a lock right before flashing and leaving GPS on might work but AOSP is fast has no bloat and is very customizable but I am a Sense guy so:
I think a Rom I would be 100% happy with as an all time Rom for right now it would have to be a Sense 3.0 Rom because I absolutely love it, with the HDR and panorama effects added to the camera, overclocked to 1.2 Ghz with a very light theme maybe like Rosie, status bar with no clock and notification area to be semi-trans black with white font a themed HTC_IME and dialer and a custom Glock LockRing that's all

The real question is how does your GPS work with wireless assistance turned off?
And Sense 3.0 is beautiful (mainly talking about the weather themed lock screen with the shortcuts) but I hate the way Sense 2 and 3 manage contacts and it's way too facebook integrated in general which is annoying.

I have to disagree. I love sense bc it has Facebook integration. I like how I set my contacts to their respective profile on my touch pro 2 with wm 6.5 synced with Google and never had to worry about it again. It puts a pic to your contacts and gives u a bday entry which is nice imo.
Now my gps sucks, I have to wait 5-10 mins to get a lock outside or in the car. And sense 2.3 doesn't have kernel source so its limited to the stock kernel.
My dream Rom is MikG, with x99 kernel. I used to love that kernel on 2.2
Sent from your Mom's Jitterbug
My dream Rom would be MikG With x99 or V8 kernel, AND Firerats due to that sucker helps save a lot of space.
My "dream" ROM on the Shift would have to be full blown Sense 3.0 with it running perfectly smooth WITHOUT overclocking. I would want the kernel for sbc and UV. And I would want google + integration added along with FB and twitter.
(Guess thats why its called a dream ROM )

To start out, it would look a LOT like CM7. Same launcher, same extras. NO Sense UI.
(for the record, I know that most of this is available, it just means installing a number of extra packages)
Add in all the google
T9 predictive input for the dialer
A nicer looking messaging app that doesn't fail every time you try to send a text longer than 1 message.
A few of the nice sound options from Sense UI, including having the ringer volume automatically reduce when the phone is picked up, automatically switching to speakerphone when you set the phone face-down during a call, and double-tapping the home key to see all your launcher pages at once.

1. Gmail, Voice, Talk, Maps, Latitude (yes, I know it's bad for battery AND privacy, but it's fun and I don't plan on committing crimes, cheating on my wife, lieing to my boss or ever being worth enough money to kidnap; so I don't care if people know where I am.), Navigation, and of course, Market.
2. I haven't made any changes to the built in messaging app of any kind, but I'm also running the latest nightly. Doesn't matter too much, since I've installed GoSMSpro.
3. Yes, I'm well aware that many of those features kill the battery. That's why I like CM7, and only want a small handful of the highly useful features from Sense.
well no matter which rom i try, i always end up installing launcher 7, so to have that already integrated would be nice for the drawer, and a rom that lets you use the volume bottoms to skip tracks in your music player ,

[Q] Cyanogenmod lag

Yesterday, I installed Cyanogenmod on my Blade, but I don't like it very much, because in menus or in homescreens I get lag. I have CM 7.1 via ROM Manager installed.
On the internet, forums, I read that CM 7.1 is very smooth. On youtube is great, but on my phone is very laggy.I have no lag in applications, only in menus or homescreens.
There is a confiuration that makes CM work smooth ( without overclock )?
try launcher pro or any other launcher it might solve the problem
and please report hows the battery on cm7.1
i tried Launcher Pro.It reduces lag, but is still laggy. What can i say about battery is that is better than 2.3.5 OS.

hows it compared to stock 2.2
try reducing animations and not using a live wallpaper
CM 7.1 is the best ROM for games and applications so is muuuuch better than 2.2, but 2.2 looks more smoothly than CM (al least for me) .
About Live Wallpaper...i didn't use one.
Use the latest nightly build.
Then tap on settings > cyanogenmod settings >performance, make sure that 'use 16bit transparency' is selected.
You can overclock it too.
I'm afraid about overclocking, but i will try with "16 bit transparency" .Thank you!
It works great! Now, it feels realy smoothy. Thank you!

Overclocking is not something to be afraid of. Just overclock it in smaller steps, try one setting for a while and if everything is ok and you don't experience any random reboots or hangups, you can set it higher. Most blades are able to handle clock frequencies up to ~700. Mine is stable at 691, others at 710 where I start to get reboots when writing messages or browsing the net etc. When testing how much your blade can handle, just remember not to tick the "Set on boot". When you find a setting that is stable, then it's safe to set it at boot also.

Ontopic: some of those sugestions like autobrightness and wifi switching on automatically are just bugs, DZO will fix them.
wish list for huawei u8800 aka x5
My sugestions for Aurora ICS from dzo are:
- adding the x5 settings like the one in miui rom(for we can set the cpu governor and frequency);
- correct model and manufacturer;
- add file explorer like the one in miui (for we dont have to download from the market);
- choose music for ringtones without addons.
The rest is excellent i guess.
Note: The databe io test in antutu is very low.
I went back for miui 2.2.17 until this will be resolved or cm9 ou some miui ics comes up.
Best Regards.
thanks for your reply. I will arrange the list and post dzo's page in a few days.
I wonder what the difference between 5.0.2.7 and 5.0.2.6.
When I put the 5.0.2.7, the pc recognizes the mobile phone as U8800PRO.
It's a very strange thing, or my lack of knowledge.
Can someone explain.
But apart from this, it works normally, only a few freezes.

1. something is strange with wifi/data. when trying to download from market, it's terribly slow. when on data it takes forever before downloading starts. when on wifi it downloads really slow. like 20kb/s on a 5 mbit connection. also when connecting to wifi, it disconnected and connected 5 times before the connection stayed up.
2. there is no light on the touch buttons (back menu home search).
3. even though I have turned the volume all the way down for ring/alert, it's still too loud.
4. battey drains fast. much faster than miui 2.1.20 (currently set to 368/1.400/ondemand/noop)

-Home button does not work
-Browser wont load and will not launch
-Play store will not work (Error connecting) so i am not sure if my network is working
-Calender constantly crashes
-System UI constantly crashes
-Settings not available through the bottom right time slide up
-Many applications dont work
I am looking for something stable but apparantly, my current set up isnt working out. Any alternatives?

Guys, just don't forget to use the last recovery, version 6.0.2.3. Older versions will lead to problems. It is on the link that OP postes.
I did all the wipes and I have only one real problem here: the launcher animations are very laggy, honeycomb was better than that. Its strange because everything else is very, veeery smooth. It happens with nova and apex launcher too. Anyone else?
Oh, and I like the new interface.

Go into the trebuchet launcher settings and enable wallpaper hack. Lag will disappear. The lag is caused by the way the 4.2 launcher is rendering the wallpaper.

Thanks! I already did that, it really make things better. I also disabled wallpapers on apex launcher and now it is very smooth.
end call

Yup..i've been testing for cm 10 & 10.1 last 2 days from stock ICS. Here what i like:
-cm10 dark theme
-OC enable up to 1.4 GHz
-terminal emulator built in
-no "less use" apps pre-install
-msg experience are great
-bottom left n right notification & task bar (maybe coz i used to in windw environmnt)
What i dont know:
-the user acc is the same as phone profile, right? Its not like as admin & user.
-Call cant be ended in both cm (or it can?... )
-changing homescreen default page number to 2 or 3 only
I dont like the upper bar (in 4.2 i think -cant rmmber- ) coz it makes the screen smaller than usual
Revert back ti stock ICS with A1 kernel for now and waiting/trying to help fixing call end button
Google now is working

A link to the post is alright I assume? http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2919
I wish there was an "official" place to discuss this unofficial build.
Running it on p4wifi with the bootloader and recovery included in the folder with the rom. Wiped before flashing it and 121212 gapps.
Google Search closes (no notification) if you have updated to the latest from Google Play.
Voice typing force closes if you try to use it and you haven't updated to the latest Google Search from Google Play.
The post says 720p video has visual problems but it never starts to record for me. (I have the mentioned problem with CM10 nightlies.)
Google Talk crashes (no notification) after voice chat connects. (On CM10 it crashes as soon as you initiate it.)
The "3 quick key presses" description of the keyboard problem seems like an oversimplification.
Are the dual notification bars and centered home/switch buttons a 4.2 thing or is that related to a non-tablet build?
Is there a proper place to search for these problems and file them if they aren't listed? I don't mind doing some testing but I'm not sure what logs to provide. Is logcat good enough? What's the easiest way to pull that?

Don't update Google Search (or uninstall it if you already did). Voice still won't work but the cards do.

Well Google Now is incomplete without voice so that's the reason I asked if Google Now worked for you. I I too face the issue of no voice. Hope this will be fixed in future updates. Really love this ROM's look and feel.

I am using Jelly Bean 4.1.2 CM 10 | cm-10-20121218-NIGHTLY. Phone dialer app cannot end calls. E-mail app cannot add more than one account.
As for multi user on CM 10.1 (JB 4.2) I do believe it is because multi user originally intended to be used only for tablet (which means no calling). Multi user is not yet available on phone (least for the stock ones). Wait for some hack for it.
Anyone knows a thread where I can follow the nightly updates for CM10 development? I can't find the right 'portal' for it
