OTA Updates No Go - Xperia Play General

So all of us with Verizon that are hoping for an update to use our phones the way they were meant to be, this official post from Sony makes me think we will never see them:
"Sony confirmed that the update will take place via PC Companion/SEUS and Bridge for Mac only. There will be no OTA updates and no notifications either. The reason behind this is that they want users to make a conscious decision when upgrading to ICS given that it is a significant revamp and that it “may impact performance in some user scenarios” given that it requires more resources."
Well, Verizon R800x's do not work with the PC Companion as we can't switch to to MTP mode with our stock phones. So am I misreading this article or are we really stuck with basic "buy from a store like Meijers or Wal-Mart" phone?

It does
From about October/Novmber-ish, SEUS works with the R800X.

It's an all-in-one tool for all phones - it downloads the files for your phone. Here's a link:
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/

SEUS doesn't use MTP. Its what flash tool is based off of.

Every time I connect it tells me to switch to MTP via USB Connection Settings, which R800x doesn't have? I must be a complete noob at cell phones. Ha.

First off uninstall PC Companion, it is trash for the R800x.
Then download & install this: http://sony-ericsson-update-service.en.uptodown.com/
(Sony Ericsson Update Service, a.k.a. SEUS)
I've used it (well, not that link, but the same program) a couple of times to reinstall .88 after testing a few things.
Pax
(Also www.wotanserver.com will probably also have the update within a month of it coming out...)

Since it's not OTA does this mean I can update without having to relock my bootloader? I know that OTA updates on an unlocked loader brick the device.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Arc getting Android 2.3.4

There's still no confirmation as to when it will be headed to the soon-to-be-released Verizon Xperia Play, but Recombu is reporting that at least some iterations of the phone will be getting upgraded to Android 2.3.4 next week, at which point the Xperia Arc will also get bumped up to the same version. Assuming there's no surprises in the next week, that would seem to make them the first non-Nexus phones to get the update.
source
Yup. Looks like SE is keeping their promise.

As far as I know you will still be able to update with an unlocked bootloader and keep it unlocked. You will however most likely lose root.

DO NOT UPDATE! all signs point to the fact that you will brick your phone if you update with an unlocked bootloader.
When costum roms appear it probably won;t take long for them to implement 2.3.4. I advice to wait for that if your bootlaoder is unlocked.
Sony Ericsson has confirmed that you will be able to still get SEUS updates as long as you carry on using stock SE firmware, even if the bootloader is unlocked.

It’s also noted that, while Sony Ericsson have provided this service, using it may void your warranty. Also if you change the bootloader or load custom ROMs on to the handset, you will not be able to receive updates provided by Sony Ericsson through SEUS. However if unlocking the boot loader is all you do, you will be able to continue to receive updates from Sony Ericsson as usual.

SE themselves allowed the boot loader to be unlocked and not some third party unlocking it. So surely as long as the boot loader is unlocked and nothing else is done it should be ok?
Maybe rooting your phone and removing bloat makes SE think you have modified the firmware? Not sure but some guy on SE fourms http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/75368 claims to be able to use SEUS to repair his Arc with an unlocked bootloader and the thread is from the 18th may.

OTA with unlocked bootloader

Hi can we do a ota from stockfirmware with a unlocked bootloader or with seus?
Hey, don't do OTA with unlocked bootloader! DON'T. Many people have already bricked their arc and play by doing so, including me. There is a fix for this brick already, but warning beforehand!
Sent from my LT15i using xda premium
Update firmware through flashtool if you need to.

Okay thanks for the early warning.
Welcome! Not to mention Sony Ericsson declines to fix phones with unlocked bootloader which are bricked. Not even if it got bricked through OTA. They will claim you responsible.

If you had your bootloader unlocked with testpoint method, you are free to OTA update with no issues, only phones unlocked through official sony method loose ability to OTA.

Yep OTA away, you will have no issues. If you deleted any apps from /system/app/ though OTA will fail. You must restore /system/ to default state
I haven't deleted anything I just took the brand new phone out the box linked up with Alejandrissimo lol used a pair of tweezer to bridge the test point cause I couldn't find a paper clip anywhere and when done check it was unlocked and put it back in the box.

I just called at&t to get official info about this. They said it was build 3.0.1.B.0.285, which has been out since April. They could not tell me why they sent out a sms about it being a "CRITICAL UPDATE". I recommend NOT getting this update as it will remove root access and as far as I know there is currently no way to root .285.

It is indeed build 3.0.1.B.0.285. I was rooted before I ran the update, and I did not loose root access afterwords. Whether or not you can root after you update if you are not already rooted I do not know.
If you OTA the update you can keep root, but if you use pc companion you will loose root. OTA would not work for me so I had to use PCC, lost root, then had to flash back to .270. Sorry, I should have specified about OTA vs PCC.

You can't do OTA if you are "bootloader unlocked. And about critical-"It's *critical* that AT&T and Verizon come out of the stone age!! We are almost on Jelly Bean.lmao. They just push these out to catch one of us with unlocked bootloaders slipping to force us to buy a new phone.

Thanks. I'll try Emma again soon. Ironic really - Emma is a Sony developer tool which is meant to give updates a bit sooner than the usual methods
For those of us that are on Cyanogen, is there any way of finding out if the FTF has any important firmware updates in there?
I can rename the .370 FTF to ZIP and see all the sin files, but the vast majority I am unsure about.
Otherwise, I can always nandroid and do it that way

Relock your BL or wait for a ftf.
The problem is not using a custom rom and update with pcc (the rom doesn't matter but the kernel yes), it's when your bl is unlocked you can't update via SUS/PCC no more.

When you flash a ftf file with flashtool, deselect DATA in the wipe section (box in top right corner). That will preserve your data when you flash.

Ok, sounds like a good compromise
When someone uses PCC to download the firmware, is a local copy stored?
Just wondering what the chances of getting this file are!
I like everything is this update, except the recent apps tray. Swiping away should always be 'swipe across' not 'swipe up or down'.
Few new features might have been nice, but can't complain. At least it's arrived!
It also has the thumb keyboard!
