A warning to any Note owners - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I don't often post here, and and I don't know if this issue has been addressed before, but but I'd like to tell you about my experience with the note:
I received the phone just today, and after bying it online.. All was good, and I already had a case (a faux-leather flip case), waiting, and and put it in immediately. After playing with it for a few hours, and I noticed that there was a dead spot on the screen. But only when using the s-pen, and a few hasty emails and a phone call to Kogan (off whom I bought the phone), revealed that this was a inhear-of-before phenomenon. As of writing, I've yet to receive word whethery they'll accept a return.
However, that would be rather pointless, and since I have since fixed the issue. It seems that the magnet holding the case flap closed was pretty powerful, powerful enough, in fact, to cause the active digitizer to stop working on that of the phone that the magnet was under. After I removed the case the s-pen worked in the spot, as well as the rest of the screen.
So be warned, test your cases if you can before you buy them, especially if they have a magnetic clasp or similar.
(sorry for the prose)

I have been avoiding magnets because of several posts on the subject. There have also been several stating there are no issues.
I prefer to remain safe, and I am grateful for your advice. Magnets near a device relying on magnetic resonance are probably not a good idea. Better safe than sorry IMO.

Strange how some people have this problem. My note has been sitting in a magnet case for 4 months now with no such problems. I guess it depends on the case and how strong the magnet is but I could not do without my case so I will carry on using it for now.

I think it also depends on where the magnet is. Mine was on the back, directly behind the device.

I agree. More testing, and definitely more information from Samsung, is required.

I wonder if it is the TYPE of magnet, not so much the size.
If it is one of those cheap magnets, maybe it won't bother it
as much as the stronger neodymium magnets?

thanks
thanks man.. for sharing this..

I also have avoided the magnet cases due to this fact and have been trying to find cases that use some other alternate means for closure, like maybe velcro instead. I was also even considering that Sweet Case made out of aluminum, but at ~$70, it is rather pricey. I have just been going case less and totally naked with it and so far no problems.

IIRC there is a comment about magnetic fields in the manual...
similarly too, there is a comment about electrostatic fields, so if you are in an environment where sparks fly off your fingertips at intervals be SURE to discharge yourself before touching your SGN.. you may kill the touch response of the screen..
been there, did that, luckily it was a $50 C/H digital thermostat.
EDIT: 2 April 3:00pm
found it: Page 25 of the GT-N7000 Quick start guide states
"Do not store your device near magnetic fields"; and inclusively states "Do not use carrying cases or accessories with magnetic closures"

Man, I guess I have to quit being a Dark Sith Lord. But I have so much fun using Force Lightning to kill all those annoying Jedi do-gooders

I have a Tridea case with a magnet. The magnet is in the part that locks the cover to the back of the phone.
If I fold that piece behind the phone, there is some influence from the magnet. The influence disappears if I leave some space between the magnet and the back of the phone.
It is only a small problem for me, and only noticeable when I play Draw something or similar apps.

magnets, how do they work??

I have the same issue, I strapped a powermat charging coil to the inside of my casemate tough case, the result is a dead spot directly above the magnet in terms of the spen.
My dilemma is whether to forgo use of the s-pen for the ease of wireless charging.
For the moment as I rarely use the s-pen, the inductive charging coil is staying in place.
The s-pen works as soon as the powermat coil is removed but I'm not sure if it could do lasting damage?

That, my friend, is one of the great unanswered questions of the universe. Gravity is another one. We know what goes on, but not always how. It is mostly at the atomic level, although you have to look into the quantum level to find out more. One day we may figure it out!

Thanks for the warning! I doesn't use a case with magnets, but it's always good to know if I ever would.

Signed up to say thanks OP. I too had this situation where i had dramatic penmark deviation on my note. I use notebook style case w/ magnet
I was considering getting it swapped under warranty but then realised the odd behaviour happened in s-memo but not in canvas/paint app. Now i know its the location of the rear magnet on my case. gj op

Nifty leather case I found, made for the Kaiser

I am a pretty big perfectionist when it comes to cases. I want something that doesn't add steps to the process of using the phone, and something that is durable as well.
I've been through the hard cover cases and found that they look terrible after a few dings. I also found that on most hard cover cases there is a certain point of weakness where the frame is smaller to compensate for port access, which led my case to crack.
Anyways, I just ordered the O24550LCST1BK from CarryMobile.
Google search O24550LCST1BK and click the first link to see it.
When will I have my url restrictions lifted? I've been a registered user for a bit now...
From the pictures it's just what I was looking for. It isn't blocky or otherwise ugly. I really like the rugged appearance and the metal hook on the back for misc usage!
The only downside is that it doesn't have a way to use the keyboard (thats another model that they offer though). I use mostly touch friendly apps anyways so I won't notice it.
When it arrives I will let you know what I think!
Is this the one you meant?
http://www.carrymobile.ru/all_HTC_HTC+Kaiser_HTC+TyTn+II+Sleeve+Type+Black.html
Doesn't seem very svelte. And having to take it off to use the keyboard is a big negative for me.
The O24550LCBSPBK-4550 may be more along the lines of something you would be interested in. I'm debating changing my order for that one and just removing the front cover flap.
Thx but all these cases are a waste of time and money. Just don't throw your phone on the floor and it stays fine. It's all common sense really. If you drop it, well that's your fault isn't it. Take care of your phone and it will last for years.

I can agree with your point of not dropping it being the number 1 way to make a phone last, but in my situation I need a case for both the protection and belt clip usage. I am normally pretty good about taking care of my phone, but I've had a few run ins with people bumping into me.
I know I am perfectly capable of taking care of my phone, but it's the other 'crazy drivers' im worried about. I'd think differently if I hadnt already had to replaced most of the internal components of my phone XD
I use Seidio hard case with local branded leather pouch (vertical, with flap magnetic cover). Pretty handy. Tried not dropping the phone, it's now 3 times already. All due to my own absent mindedness.
However, the Seidio holds up well, it hasn't cracked or anything. Phone working fine still ..
I had PDAir Aluminium on my SE M600 previously, but given Kaiser's bulk & weight, I decided going lighter. Besides I read somewhere the aluminium reduces signal quality (on M600 doesn't matter, not doing any Wifi - it doesn't have one but it matters for Kaiser, both GPS and Wifi)
Its similar to the case I had by SENA for my HTC 8525/HERMES. The only difference it had a flap the covered the entire screen/keyboard and did fully protect the phone. The only problem was you had to remove the phone for the keyboard. Generally didn't use the keyboard so it was perfect. Unfortunately SENA doesn't make one for the KAISER otherwise I'd buy it. Did protect the phone fully.

did you look at the O24550LCBSPBK-4550 model? Sounds like what you describe, except you can open it up and the keyboard keys are protected by a plastic layer. I finally broke down and got this case, so I am just waiting on it to arrive from hong kong now

Do not buy the acer case!

The morons at Acer designed a case that covers up the microphone (if the mic is truly where other posters have said - located between the screen and the bexel on the upper side!
I will make a little hole for it, since still less modding than trying to fit another case to the A500. Silly miss, none the less.
Might want to be sure about things before you make a bold statement about not buying the case. I'm sitting here with my case on, sitting 3 feet from the mic, in a normal voice said a sentence and it picked up every word clearly and I don't' even have the personalized Google voice recognition on.
I like it, the only thing that I really need to modify on the case is that it is extremely tight, and it covers up the micro SD card slot, so I have to cut the case open where the slot is. It's really difficult to push out of the case so I feel like I'm going to break it one of these times to change the SD card. Other than that it's put together very well.

I had a very hard time getting the sdcard in, then out when i realized it needed to be formatted first.. I thought the Nook Color was hard to get in. Thats easy compared to this, but until they make other cases, we dont really have a choice.

I'm on the hunt for a case or cover, so big thanks for the info. I don't want to drop $120 for the pdair one right now either, so the hunt continues...
The only problem I've had with the Acer case is that the device slowly slides out of the bottom because of the orientation, but it's a terribly easy fix.
Mic and everything else have been fine.
Also, smells bad. I'm bringing it around a lot to try and force the smell out.

Expensive is an understatement... $119?
Give it a few weeks and we will have some Chinese knock-offs that will be better made than the Acer one at half the price.
The Acer case is a nice design; I like the fact that it's thin, tight, with a built-in stand, but it feels like it's made out of some terribly cheap material. I don't expect it to last a long time. A case just like it with better materials and magnetic closure will be a winner for sure.

That's what i did also, some apps dont like it but generally its ok.. The smell is funny though.
I bring it around and people are like, what the hell is that smell... (it's new electronics...)
for me the biggest gripe is how hard it is to get the tablet out 9f the case. to the point that i'm scared of damaging the screen of the tablet by pressing it too hard to take it off the case :/
the second one would be the smell
Does anybody know EXACLTY where the recording mic is?
I plan to do some 'Rocket Surgery' to access the mike and the MicroSD card slot.

I used a piece of 3M double sided tape, they kind they sell for the various wall hooks that can be removed. It isn't perfect but it seems to have made a fair improvement dealing with the sliding.
I'm going to try the TPD case as well, since I ordered it before I tried the double sided tape, so we'll see where I finally settle.
Bad smell fix
I agree the smell of the case hits you like a ton of bricks at first - and the Acer case is a dust magnet.
Simple fix - wipe the entire case down with a warm wet sponge. No longer picks up every piece of dust / dirt it encounters and the smell dramatically decreases. The smell also goes completely away after a week or so.
Still looking for a good case with a potrait stand as I have a couple of apps that require it or just look better that way. Anyone got a tip for me?

NEVER use cover with a magnetic clip--> S-Pen issue

Hope my experience can help someone!
Just bought G Note and a flip cover (not original one) in order to protect it as much as possible!
After some usage, i noticed circular area of the screen where S-Pen was not working! Started in reading about calibration issues, but nothing solved my problem...I therefore decided to wait until official ICS and, if problem still existing, to send phone to repair center
Searching every day on internet, I finally found the reason of my issue.....the magnetic closing clip of the cover (5-6 mm of diameter!)
It seems also clearly stated into Samsung's user manual....
Immediately removed the cover and after 5min..NO PROBLEM ANYMORE AT ALL...
These the very good point....actually the magnetic cover for all type of phone is not recommended!! It will effected our phone....

Thanks for the Info Mate!
It must be a particularly strong magnet on your case. I've been using mine trouble free as well.
How you determine if the case you are looking at has a strong magnet or not is another question...
Zuber
...attached you can find the incriminated cover (color is because Note is from my girlfriend ....even if I have G-Note too!!)
As you can see the magnet (I have removed it from the cover) is not big (thickness is something like 1mm). Approaching it to steel, it starts in exercising force at approximately 0.5cm!
As additional info, no problems were existing by writing with fingers! The issue is with S-Pen because the magnet interfere with it!
Here also the link where I could find my way out!....
....sorry..it seems it is forbidden to post external links!.....
I'm attaching an additional picture from this site with issue similar to my one, but bigger area (mine was something like 1.5 cm and located exactly on top of the clip)
I would definitely agree with that! I bought a quite expensive ZENUS cover purposely because it has a button on the front and not a magnet. Unfortunately there's a magnet at the back which is used to keep the stand at its place. 2 days after starting to use this cover I got s-pen problems presented exactly at the same screen area where the magnet was located. Lines got thinner and deviated at this area, so I had to rip off the magnet and replace it with Velcro. All problems are gone now.
have a Zenus too
Hi,
I bought a Zenus too, and I'm using it since February.
The magnet is quite small, never had any issues.
Can't post pictures, but its a kaki coloured brown, fake leather, and some stripes.

That's the one I got. Unfortunately I did't take screenshots of the display issue but it was located at the lower left part of the screen - just where the magnet sits at the back. The defect: nothing when trying to draw something over or fusiform deviation of the lines drawn in this area (when pressing harder) - just like the shape of a magnetic field...
p.s. as popo72 said - no problems when drawing with fingers.
could these cases hardbrick our note!?!? XD

Love Mei galaxy S9+ case review and thoughts!

What a beast of a case for the S9+! I have heard of these cases but have yet to have a phone that would work with one.
First off the packaging is great. It’s well packaged and protected with a great looking box. Inside you find the case, 2 Allen wrenches, a lanyard, and a brochure. Installation of this case is pretty straight forward. Just remove the 6 Allen screws and separate the pieces. Slip the phone into the rubber part and reverse the assembly process. Being careful to realign everything.
Use:
The buttons are easy to press and find on the case. The flap for the power port fits snug and will keep dust out. Like I said, it’s snug and a bit tight to open. But very manageable. The headphone port has a great little door and also closes nice and snug. Doesn’t feel like it will open by accident. Speaker ports and mic ports are all correct and well made.
On the back of the case there is a cutout in the aluminum but still covered in the rubber material for what my guess is wireless charging. Very cool! The camera and flash as well as finger print scanner are all well protected and not obstructed in any way. I like the protection for the camera area.
Access to the screen edges is unobstructed. And still picks up presses just fine. Not issues here for me but some people may feel different.
Overall it’s a beast. But will I leave it on full time? Probably not and here’s why. I use a gimble a lot for videos with my phone. My gimble just wont work this case. And needing to remove screws and such to take the case off is a bit of a pain for day to day for me. But for camping and such this case will be on my s9+!

Sleek solid "New" Note 10+ Schnail case

First I like to thank Schnail for providing me with their Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ case to tryout and review. After unboxing the case which is very nicely boxed up I noticed a small card which tells the buyer that a portion of the proceeds goes to charities to fight cancer. As someone who has lost two family members to cancer that meant a lot to me. That same card provides simple instructions to put the case unto the phone. It also directs the buyer to activate the 1-year warranty on their website. Also in the package is a photocopy handwritten note to the buyer, a nice touch.
On to the case review. It is a two piece case. The back part of the case is clear, to showcase the back of the beautiful Note 10+ back. It has a harden rubber side with reinforced corners. It also has that same rubber imbedded in the back portion of the case in the form of a small thin bead and nameplate. This seems to be a well thought out design to keep the clear back from touching the surface it rests on, thereby avoiding scratches to the clear back. Very nice!
I was disappointed at first to see the bottom speaker cutout was missing from the back portion of the case. After putting the case together I noticed there was indeed a bottom speaker grill in the top portion of the case. The sound seems to be redirected out of the front of the case this way somewhat similar to the top speaker. I thought this might muffle the sound, but I really did not notice this, and in fact the sound may actually be better.
The top portion of the case is a rigid plastic that snaps over the phone. It has a raised top and bottom to keep the face of the screen from touching the surface when laying face down. The top portion when snapped onto the phone does not seem to interfere with the curved edges of the phone and while I still have the original Samsung installed screen saver on my Note 10+ I believe this case would not interfere with any screen protector.
The case feels great in my hands, and my phone just feels secure and well protected. This case is every bit as protective as some of the higher priced cases I’ve used on other devices. The power/Bixby button and the up and down volume buttons are rather small compared to my other case, but they seem to be raised enough for me to find them without looking. The power port and the S-pen dock are deep. This seems to make for issues getting the s-pen out of the phone with case on. This is not a show stopper, but is the one flaw that I see so far. I’ll use the case for a bit to determine if it is an issue. Wireless charging with the case on works as it should.
Overall I find this case to be one of the best I’ve ever used. The difficult s-pen aside, a lot of thought has gone into this case, with plenty of focus on protecting your valuable asset. I think they have done a great job with this case.
UPDATE:
Having had the case on the phone continuously for the last 10 days I have some additional information. My initial fear of the s-pen hole being too small to access the pen has proven not to be an issue for me. I can say that someone with bigger fingers probably would find this to be problematic. Also my question about the sound quality has also not been a problem for me. I’ve used the phone to play music and as a conference device and the quality of sound has been impressive. So no issue there either. As for protection the case has performed very well there to. I dropped my new getting out of my truck shortly after installing the case and picked up my phone in horror only to see not a scratch or crak on my phone. The case itself also had no signs of the fall. I did notice that the clear back that showcased my beautiful device is starting to scratch up from being in my pocket or sliding on the table. It is not surprising to me and certainly not something that would stop me from buying the case, but I do expect in time it will look pretty bad.
Overall I’m impressed with the quality of the case and how thin it is. I’ve decided to keep this case on the phone as my daily driver.
So hang on, you do a review of a phone case, but you don't post pictures of how it looks?

Cool. I figured they offered multiple colors, I was just saying I'd prefer it in a different color.
I may be in a case thread, but I'm definitely not looking for a case! Window shopping doesn't clutter my desk I've have always bought way too many case for every phone I've had, and always end up with a bunch of cases I only used one time. Before I got this phone I said wasn't gonna do that. I've got 2 cases and the S-View Flip Cover for my 10+, so I don't need to buy anymore
