[Q] Can version number be spoofed? - Kindle Fire General

I was wondering if you can pre root an update and trick the kindle into thinking it was updating to a higher version.. if you could trick the version then u could even downgrade
###SO DOES ANYONE THINK THEY CAN DO IT?###

This is development!

No. Its a question about development. If everyone posted things wanted to know or learn about development in "development" this place would be flooded. Others have told you you posted in the wrong place and you argue why its not. Others have told you its against the rules to offer paid apps for free and you argue why its not. What is your purpose?

Compare build.props from latest to previous you will see the changes. I'm not sure how deep Amazon goes into identifying your device but build.prop is the place to start

I don't know if it's true for the Kindle, but at least for Verizon and the Droid series of phones, properly updating the ID in the build.prop will trick the OTA server into thinking the device has been updated already, when it hasn't. It's another way to block OTAs.

I'm trying to use it to downgrade

not possible, stock recovery wont flash any altered zip. or in your case, a prerooted zip. or even a older official zip. modifying the system files requires root, and if u have root you don't need to downgrade/spoof anything.
so in the end, unnecessary.

Camera and force stops with the sports option

Not sure what happened to my last thread, but I was given really detailed info on how to fix my camera and it was gone before I had the time to take advantage of it Nothing like wasting the time of those willing to help you. Hopefully I just couldn't find it, but I checked my subscribed threads and nothing was there.
If you have recovery installed, you can install one of the kernels in the development forum. They have the camera fixes built in.

I don't know squat about any of this, which is why I didn't just use the instructions people had already given in other threads. They use terminology I don't understand and assume you know what they are talking about when they say use this kernel or that one (or whatever). I just checked and somehow I'm not subscribed to this thread as well. Maybe the other one is still here... I have never been on a forum where you weren't automatically subscribed to your own threads.
Ah.. well I found your thread lol. I'm using xda app so don't know if it'll link right, if not just copy and paste.

Can we have a sub menu in Dev ROM section for individual version

Instead of having all ROMS, Kernels, Themes clubbed together in on section can we have submenus in dev section so that we can chose what we want and/or what version (ie ec05,eh06,eh17 etc)
thanks
That would be awesome.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Way to specific I would think to create this though and it would require a mod making a new sub menu for every release and leak ect.
But I agree it would be awesome!

Not to mention after (if?) official GB gets here, none of the other ones will matter, probably not even the official Froyo roms.
It wouldn't pay off again until some superhero got ICS running and people started spinning that off.
Either way the real solution to this isn't subforums, IMO, it would be some sort of category/tags system. Some way the [EH17] and whatnot on the beginning of the link was something more automated and official than something the dev just typed there. Clicking [EH17] would show all the posts tagged EH17.
Wiki isn't enough because its not comprehensive either with all the roms and themes and kernels.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
that would be a lot of extra coding work. One thing that would help is a 'Releases' section though - I'm really tired of people starting 'interest check' threads for their new ROM that they didn't even start yet, not to mention having the crap threads nestled right in there with the nice hot releases.
The wiki doesn't even load for me on my phone or computer, no idea why.
I support this idea though
That would be great

What a wonderful community.

Managed to root my phone last night in a few hours simply by reading through posts on here. Never attempted it before but now having done it, it's safe to say I'd definitely do it again. Although I've not been helped directly, I'm blown away at the length people on here go to to help others. Thank you to all who's posts helped me and to all that will undoubtedly help me in the future.

AAHK has been removed by the developer himself. However, there are talks on a possible return.

I also used AAHK for my first root and my first custom rom was randomblame's JellyTime beta 6
One-click root utilities are always the best way to go for beginners, as well as the easiest.

Agreed! AAHK was just amazing. Makes rooting such a simple process =D
But normally you only have to root your Device once and so the aahk opens a big world with a lot to learn.
If it would be harder to root your DHD many would not do it, because they fear they can brick their phone.
I also used the aahk to root and now everything I read about ROMs and Radios etc becomes understandable for me, becaue I can do it in real.

Pls delete.

After a lot of searching and reading i found the answers i needed about the padlock bootscreen thanks to the developers that got it.

This is what's happened,
Rooted ATT S4, installed twrp 2.5.0.2,
Installed Sho 1.5, used Loki doki
I was getting the costum screen with the padlock warning when booting. All was well.
Decided to try beta 4.3 rooted, now the padlock screen is gone and I get regular boot screen. Download screen says Samsung official.
I'm still rooted and booting OK.
Uninstalled and installed clean rom ,
Flashed lokidoki, still rooted and boot screen still stock.
Is this normal?
If this is in the wrong place pls move it and if this s old news delete it.

Sometimes when you flash ROMs the tablet gets confused as to how much memory is available I've heard of it plenty times when going back to stock usually a factory reset or if that doesn't work reflashing the ROM. You need to get the tablet to reevaluate how much storage it has. It currently thinks it a 16gb version.

Considering that this person only asked about how to free up space on his Nexus, I doubt that would have happened. Of course I would have offered direction to the proper forum if it was something critical. I didn't find it surprising at all that after a few members jumped in to help, your post had be the one letting him know that he shouldn't be in this thread, nevermind any advice on his issue. But it seems that every time I run into one of your posts, it is almost never helpful yet very terse and usually rude. Most of your answers are either about the member being in the wrong sub forum or that they didn't read the changelog. It's almost like spam being posted over and over.

My point exactly.
If we were to wait to inform the op that he was in the wrong forum until after he had done something like that, it would have been irresponsible of us to not head him off at the pass and try to prevent such a thing.
There was nothing rude in this thread until someone wanted to play keyboard cowboy because they had a grudge against me.
