AT&T Note or Int - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

posted this in i717 forum but would also love input from international note owners as well
i currently have the AT&T LTE version of the note
and someone is trying to trade with me for their international version (they have t-mobile) and i'm currently stuck at a crossroads,
i do love the home button on the international and the development they have going on in their forum. However, i feel like development here will start to pick up also (running saurom with holo kernal) i live in San Francisco where LTE is pretty strong for me but the exynos processor does also sound nice. So this is my dilemma, any advice would be appreciated!
Note: yes i did search the forum and have read all the posts regarding at&t vs international but they all go back and forth without solid opinions =/ that is perhaps why i'm stuck right now lol.

I actually have both. There isn't much difference other than processor and LTE so i suggest pick what's important to you and run with it. I've only have the international version for about a day now so i can't comment on battery life as opposed to AT&T's version but then again your in a actual LTE Area where as i am not so that wasn't a factor at all for me. I will probably get rid of my AT&T version soon.

The only real problem on facing is that I do love LTE however its very on and off for me its not definite LTE wherever I am in the city which is kinda swaying me back and both between the two
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA

LTE won't be in my area for so long that it just didn't matter and to be honest 6 or 7 mbps down and 1.5 to 2mbps up is sufficient enough for me.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

What's more important to you? If you like the different ROMS, development, and possibly getting faster upgrades to the latest OS, then the International Note. If you like better performance, then the International Note. If you like data download speeds on LTE or the ability to use your phone on either AT&T OR T-Mobile, then the AT&T Note.

No need to think. Just get the International. It will have more diverse dev support than the AT&T version will ever get just because of the processor.
Unless you need LTE.

Int all the way. No discussion needed.

Never had att version. But the international version development is awesome.......unless you really, really can't live without LTE
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk

I would go for the international every day of the week. I really love the home button.
But of course, if you can't live without the LTE then you should go for AT&T.

I say int'l all day.....my buddy has the AT&T version and it honestly seems laggy to me

I have an international and I love it BUT I since anyone on this forum uses and abuses their devices, I would seriously consider the AT&T due to the fact you will have no manufacturer service for the international here in the U.S....a 600 brick is far more painful than a 200 brick....

I have owned both. Ditched the ATT model simply for the dev support over here. Internationals battery life is better too.

not 100% true, yes its true you dont have manufactures service and that part is true but there are 3rd party warranties that will service it like squaretrade.com for one.

Int note all the way. even stock.. <--better for me anyway. to me it pointless to have LTE with capped data... do you really need that much speed to check facebook and emails lol <----for me no.. plus i use wifi 9 times out of ten at home.. now if we had true unlimited data. then LTE would rock. streaming movies and music etc. but alas capped data you will chew that up in no time..
other points for me. home button.. faster updates vs att.. no lag what so ever compared to the att..( preordered the att note but sold it too laggy and battery life was low ) <---batt life is awesome can go an 8 hour day. normal ,,facebook, emails, text etc, and still have like 80% left.. auto sync is off of course.. as well as gps and bluetooth..
anyway my point the int note works for me over the att lte version.
but agree either better proc/batt life vs lte its your call bud..

the only thing I'm stuck on right now is the lack of a warranty =\

Thinking about getting one..... Advice?

So I used and loved my Dell steak for a good year or so and I upgraded to an HTC vivid yesterday. The phone is fantastic, but I definitely miss the large screen. How is the Note for former streak users? Will it work on AT&T lte here in Dallas, TX? Is it worth selling the vivid and spending 800 bones on? What do you guys think?

I gotta say, there's a lot of things that I find different about the vivid than in the Engadget review. Check out some of the comments in that thread. I spent well over an hour deciding which one I wanted. But this isn't about that. I think if the Note worked on AT&T's lte I would jump on the Note.
I'm a former Streak user and I've just upgraded to a Note. Loving it, although being a former Streak user means I'm not overwhelmed.
IMHO the Streak was a massively underestimated device, and sadly I think the Note may be heading the same way. And all because it's a bit big .
My first mobile (NEC P3) was humungously bigger than the Note and only had 4-line LCD display - the P3 was a real struggle to put in a jean pocket , the Note is definitely not and that's all that matters surely ? What is it with the "how it looks up to your ear" angst
The reason I upgraded to the Note is the increased performance, resolution, drawing/note taking ability and a better chance of getting decent and timely OS upgrades.
Can't help you with the connectivity questions (I'm in UK), but it seems a shame that in the US it's so hard to get these answers for you early adopters thinking of importing. Can't the US journos who review these things get the answers ?

Fantastic points of view! I miss my large screen quite a bit, but lte here in Dallas is incredible and worth taking the hit. I've been finding that reviewers are reporting speeds that people get with hspa+ here as lte speeds. I've been getting a consistent 35 to 45mbps download speeds. I find that incredibly strange. If the Note can access those kind of speeds here in Dallas, it would certainly be a dream device to say the least. And definitely worth the cash.
Something I did to really sell me on the device (I dont have it... yet) is I went to best buy and dinked around with the Galaxy Player 5. It is running 2.3, is huge and still rather thin, which is the closest simulation to the Note I can think of. The people looked at me weird when I was trying to slide it in my pocket, but it confirmed that a device that huge can still comfortably fit.
Just a warning... as has been said, if one goes that big, Im not sure how one could ever go smaller...
and btw... first post
I had the streak. The note is better in every way!!! 21 MBPS at a desktop resolution while on the web at 1200 x 800 is much better for me than 50 MBPS on a smaller, less resolution screen. I am on wi fi most of the time anyway.
It looks like it does support lte according to Engadget's review, but it's very vague...

LTE won't be coming to most areas till 2015 on At&t.
All LTE means is worse battery life, more bulk, and most likely a worse processor. Just look at the skyrocket.
There really is no need for LTE on phones either. HSPA+ allows me to stream 1080p without stopping.
If you want LTE go buy a SGS2 ****rocket.

Are you joking? If you haven't noticed I live in Dallas and own an HTC Vivid. I'm taking great advantage of LTE right now. It's fantastic. Which is why I want the Note to have it. I'll also vouch that my battery life is no worse than normal on a typical Android phone. Your angry reply is either full of idiocy or misinformation. You have no idea what I do with my phone nor if I it need or not. I believe everyone is different. Hence the reason why we come to this site; to be different. 2015? None of the current versions of Gnote supports LTE.
The korean version will but I dont know if they are in the same band ( chances are no )
Eventually they will release it in US too. Here the chance that its going to be LTE is high. This might easily take 4-6 months.
If LTE were to come to my place, i would love to enjoy the LTE speeds too....
Its never too much when it comes to internet speed

Wasn't an angry reply. At&t hasn't even rolled out LTE in NY yet. It's about to be 2012 and AT&T only has LTE in about 8 cities, not including NYC. By the time AT&T covers all of the US at this rate, it will be about 2015 or '16. I don't understand how that's wrong info? Most of the US doesn't even have HSPA+ yet. I'm lucky to live in the small portion of HSPA+ area.
The ****rocket is heavier enough to notice a diff. when holding it in your hand against the og SGSII. It has a bulkier design and is choppy, again LTE is in about 8 cities.
How would I know where you live? I'm on the mobile version if you couldn't tell... Even if I was on the full site, I don't look to see where people live... that's just sketchy.
About your data usage and how it fits your "lifestyle". Unless you're illegally downloading movies, games, or other copyrighted files, there really is no point in having LTE. My home wifi sucks so I use my phone to download things occasionally, HSPA+ works fine and is fast enough and I watch netflix, download apps, and youtube vids on my unlim. data plan. LTE is also kind of pointless unless you have unlimited data as well.
Anyway before you start calling people idiots, use your head. LTE has been around for a long time now with VZW. It took them about 4 years to roll out their LTE network and it still doesn't give coverage to everyone. Now, since I'm "idiotic", correct my math... 2011+4=2015.

My location is right there under my screen name. Again, you don't know what my lifestyle is like and I'll tell you now, it has nothing to do with illegal downloads. more about streaming from my cloud via pogo plug. Next, you clearly have a problem with reading things thoroughly as I clearly wrote Dallas, not Houston. So to answer your question: No. You didn't "duz gud". And if you think the weight difference between the skyrocket and the sgs2 is a big enough difference, then you should probably do a few curls with a dish towel to get a little stronger. As far as internet speeds go, you have crappy wifi? It's comparable to when you girlfriend says "It was good for me too". She just doesn't have anything better to compare it to. It's pretty awesome getting 45mbps on my phone as others that have experienced it can attest, and as they say; once you go LTE, you can't go back to slower speeds... or you can't go back to playboy! (well no one really says that, but it's awesome!) Think about what technology we will have soon that might require more data or faster speeds. Thinking what you have now is good enough technology wise is short sighted. I'd like to add that I still get unlimited data. It would be kinda lame if I didn't have that. Hey, at least we agree on something! Last but not least this article on engadget indicates that LTE Advanced will launch in 2013. http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/08/atandt-commits-to-lte-advanced-deployment-in-2013-hesse-and-mead/
That means either most people will get LTE sooner that later or some of us will most likely be enjoying near 1gbps while HSPA+ is still good enough for you.
Woooo! Can I get an Amen????

Oh so now you are resorting to muscular insults. Well before I say anything, I bench 250 and hit the gym every other day, the reason I care about weight is I don't want an ugly fat phone that could be lighter.
I honestly do not see any use for 1gbps download speeds on a MOBILE Phone. Don't get ahead of yourself. PC's don't even require that kind of speed, so why would a phone need it?
Back to LTE... cool you get 45mbps, now name some practical uses of that speed. Doing anything that strains internet connection would not require even a tenth of that speed.

So AT&T 4G LTE is hitting NYC.

I just about talked myself into ordering a GSM/HSPA GNote. Knowing that AT&T's 4G LTE was coming, but was probably months if not a year or 2 away from my area (USA, NY/NJ).
But just very recently I'm reading that AT&T unofficially "flipped the switch on" for LTE in some areas of New York City. Unfortunately the GNote's 4G won't be able to utilize LTE.
Yeah, I know 4G/HSPA+ is still decently fast...But a big part of the reason for me going GNote in the first place is for getting the latest and greatest. And with a radio that ain't going to be compatible with something that's already starting to come out, man that's just killing me!
So now I either wait for a Verizon version to hit the US shores (I'd rather NOT go with them!) or look at "skimping" back down to a smaller screen with the GNexus.
The LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus only works on Verizon. Honestly, I'd stick with the Galaxy Note until actually using LTE doesn't murder your battery or put you over a data cap.

There has been no information released to today that specifically indicates the Note will have LTE when/if it does comes to ATT. It has been seen at the FCC with the normal assortment of bands, but the only thing different was NOT the inclusion of LTE, rather a change in the model number (they added B) this could indicate as well that they took the physical button away as they did with the SG2.
No one but Sammy and ATT can say for sure that if/when the Note comes to the US that it will sport ATT's LTE network.

Have you been able to use it yet? Anyway that you can get a pic of just the front screen, or something showing ATT logo?
in for pics, this is great news for me, buuuut....i really wish the front face was blank. the samsung logo is annoying enough
If AT&T gets an LTE Note it will be Qualcomm, if people thought it felt slow in the Skyrocket... a screen with the Note's resolution will not be fun. I say hold off on LTE until gen 2 chipsets are out.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I don't find the Skyrocket slow at all, much quicker than my brother's ATT GS2. Some of you just look for things to complain about.
Seeking. Did you ever find a time to get some pictures of that Samsung Note for AT&T? I am really looking forward to it coming to AT&T. My upgrade is due up shortly.
I believe that guy was lying, or got scared. He has removed both posts that he made in reference to the ATT version.
Since he disappeared and never showed a pic, here is another story confirming the Note is headed for AT&T with LTE and the Snapdragon processor, along with a picture of it with four soft buttons. However there's something taped to it, presumably covering up the AT&T logo.

The Note LTE won't be the latest and greatest, it may actually be worse than the IshitPhone 4S.
The snapdragon processor is the ONLY SoC that works in LTE phones.
The snapdragon is laggy, inconsistant, and just not a good chipset.
Plus AT&T throttles you if you use too much data too fast, so no thank you. Good luck getting dev support too. The butchered snapdragon LTE **** Note will not be able to use our ROMs or Kernels.
The Galaxy Note LT**** is a no go for me.

Plus AT&T throttles you if you use too much data too fast, so no thank you. Good luck getting dev support too. The butchered snapdragon LTE **** Note will not be able to use our ROMs or Kernels.
The Galaxy Note LT**** is a no go for me. I am ****. And I talk a lot of ****. **** **** ****.

Whats the matter with you? **** this **** that. No need to speak like that here.
BTW have you tried LTE? I have, on a Skyrocket and it is incredible. I may trade my Note in to get the AT&T one with LTE. side by side tests put the SKY TEN TIMES faster than the Note, and for some weird reason 2x as fast in non LTE and even wifi. I suspect they have made other changes to the radio that make it faster than what we have in the Note (but I cant prove this).
The only reason I wouldnt is the 4 capacitive buttons. Not that I dont like those (stops dirt getting caught there) but on this device, one handed, its far easier to hit the central button than the power button.

Everyone created clever names for overrated and generally crappy phones. For example, your phone the "****rocket" or an iphone, the "I****".
On a phone you would never notice 30-50mb downstream speeds unless you are downloading a movie, etc.
The slight speed advantage you receive from LTE over the Note is cancelled out by the Snapdragon. It seems you ignored the main part of my post saying that the Snapdragon is a TERRIBLE SoC. On the ****rocket and the T-mo SGSII, UI lag is prevalent as well as laggy transitions, and unreliable game performance.
The quadrant scores on ANY app reveal the unsteadiness of the Snapdragon when compared to the OG At&t SGSII. Many people including myself have tried the Vivid and the ****rocket and have noticed visible lag when going thru day to day tasks. I went to my local corporate store and tried one on the release day, I asked the rep and he said the model was not defective and then I tried my buddy's ****rocket and it was just as laggy. He ended up buying my OG S2 from me.
Another thing that will stop me from buying any LTE phone besides the fact that they all have Snapdragon SoC's is the butchering done by At&t to ALL their devices but especially to LTE devices.
I owned an AT&T OG SGSII and we had a decent 10-12 well known developers with nice ROMs. Then I took a look at the Skyrocket forums a couple days ago and saw 1 well known dev and another dev asking for donations...
It will be the same with the LTE Note, except most likely worse. That is very unsettling especially since the LTE Note is most likely not shipping with ICS unless its release is in Q2 2012. Then all buyers will be stuck on Gingerbread till someone ports it.
But yup, have fun with those speeds, I doubt those internet speeds will help you much in day to day activites on your phone but okay... Have fun waiting a year for ICS!

Now adays, att and the term **** go hand and hand. Sooner or later att will replace that word in meaning. Att has been moving to an iphone only serve. Att has been dead last with the newest android and windows offerings. It seems that att only caters to iphone users and is limiting bandwith to cater to the may iphone users. Until apple releases a 4g lte version of the iphone, thier lte network is not a priority.
Can't wait. Only an LTE Nexus on AT&T could make think twice about the Note.

Exactly...
On my Note, when I hit 10gigs of data, I got throttled even though it was day 29 of my billing cycle.
But... On my Iphone I used like 20gigs a month and never got throttled.
As long as the "Apple Cheerleader Effect" lives on, No cell company will ever cater to Android users.

I hate to give away ideas...but you know list our t989s on craigslist unlocked and rooted for $400...its like an almost equal trade-in.
One of the main deal makers for this, is for those on contract who can get more money by terminating their contract for a cheaper plan and newer phone...
What's the catch why so cheap??

You'd still get "4G" (since T-Mo classifies anything at 14mbps+ 4G) at 21mbps, half of what you can get from the t989 if it really matters that much.

Why i choose SIM-Free international galaxy s3 for my AT&T in USA

I know LTE speeds are not achieved with international SIM-Free S3. I can trade-off that one feature for many other things. I use Non-smartphone plan for 15$ vs 25$(LTE) a month which is pretty cool with unlimited data and i get speed up to 1.5Mbps(which is ok as i have wifi availability everywhere). Importantly the hardware, there is a possibility of Krait processor coming in for LTE handsets(rumor as heard). I don't want to take chances of losing Wolfson DAC this time(US LTE variants might have a different chipset).
Share your thoughts.
I am getting the international version because when I got my skyrocket I sold it right away profiting $500. I got the phone for FREE.
That being said, I live in the LA area and there is 4G LTE. But I have a limited data plan anyways and always have WiFi at work and at home (fios).
I'd rather have the Wolf, and Exynos over the S4 as the Exynos blows the S4 and Tegra 3 out of the water.

U guys are yanks right? I think you should wait till the American branded versions are out.
There's a possibility they could be better with a much more appealing design.

Agreed, but if all you're getting is 1.5Mbps, then I would scream bloody murder. I'm in Austin, TX and using international SGS2 on AT&T and get up to 7.5Mbps...!
I am on that plan and get avg 3-5mbs with mine. I have gotten 7-8mbs a few times and 12mbs at 1AM.
I just used 109GB on that plan and not a peep out of AT&T. LOL
I am going with international, if the ATT version ends up looking better or for some reason have better specs, than I will just buy that on contract and sell the international version. Not really worried about lte.
Also now that the ATT htc x one is the only version with a locked bootloader I am very hesitant to wait for the SIII ATT version.

I am getting close to 3MPS DL (provisioned on MediaNet, not Smartphone) As long as I can stream movie trailers without hiccups Its all good. Thats about the only time we use Carrier data while at a restruant deciding what movie to see...We have not used an ATT branded phones since the Captivate and won't be buying any soon except to sell.
We are saving over $600 a year on two smart phones. Plus the sale of the upgrades. It's an easy decision to buy the International versions on so many levels. even IF ATT had the IMEIs and billed for a Smart Phone in whcih case we go to Straight Talk. We don't need LTE for anything .
And the Wolfson DAC AFTER Supercurio does his magic is well worth the price of entry. But like all of our International devices so far SGS IIs and a Note, we buy used. Don't need a warranty as I void it anyway rooting and ROMming...LOL
Thee should be used ones becoming available in a couple months. In the mean time let the early adopters discover the issues and the Developers fix em. I can wait..........I think........or not.
Yea I choose to get the unlocked international version to ream att. For $15 I get unlimited data and I usually pull 6 down and 2 up. I can stream netflix, hulu, rdio and tunein radio without worrying about data usage.
not to mention hd video podcasts that i download all the time to my phone with doggcatcher ... all of this and i didnt even mention torrenting lol
I go through about 40-50 gigs a month.

You likely have the right settings. If you are not provisioned for a "Smart Phone" from ATT you will be on the MediaNet plan and your DL speeds will vary a lot and never really go that high,
. Mine go from 1.5 to 3mps. I have never had issues with streaming though when I needed.

I 'd say 4 months after the first ones are shipped and $200+ less Used. I haven't bought a new International phone yet. Warranty iffy in the US and I fully intend to void it anyway rooting and ROMing it. May as well buy an already rooted device from someone reliable. Paid Less than $450 for the SGS IIs and Less than $600 for the Note. Those savings alone goes a long way toward the SGS III.
All I hope is that they will release both a LTE and non-LTE version in the US, like the SGS2.
Wishful thinking.
I'm getting international version and I am on t mobile. I have HSPA+ right now on my phone with them but honestly... Edge can still download stuff.
I'm a little upset that it won't support HSPA but I can live without it. More and more places that my friends and I frequent are putting up free WiFi so I feel like in a year's time WiFi will be so abundant that getting LTE devices won't be such a big deal.

To each their own.

Who really needs LTE?

Everyone is crying about the N4 not having LTE but honestly, who needs that? Aren't you guys connected to a wifi anyway for most of the time? HSPA or HSPA+ or whatever it's called fast enough to me.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Actually in my school campus there is highspeed wifi. The only time I need data is while I am driving or somewhere else. Also many times, devices switch off wifi to save battery. This can cause live updates to stop coming. That doesn't happen on mobile data.
Why should a brand new flagship phone NOT support the latest mobile standards?! If there were no need for LTE it wouldn't be available because nobody would use it.

As a T-Mo user, not me. But in a phone that is supposed to be the cream of the crop with all the latest technologies, I can kinda see why some people are slightly butthurt it's not included. With that being said, I definitely do not think it should be a deal breaker like some are claiming.
Don't get me wrong, but I love the speeds that 4g Lte offers, but paying for it its kind of expensive.

Keep in mind, there's always got to be a huge leap forward every year. For the past 3-4 years this has been the amount of cores and ram (specific chipsets aside). What the hell can they do next year, octo-core phone?
Another fanboi trying to justify no LTE... I swear these forums are worse than Apples sometimes.
I personally don't want LTE because there is no unlimited plan, it's too expensive and coverage sucks here in the UK. However am I going to start trying to tell people who are on LTE and enjoy it that they're wrong? Not releasing a new top end Smart Phone with an LTE model is a mistake.. just like it is a mistake to not have a Micro SD slot or a 32GB model.
This phone ha a small niche, it's for people who want to buy a mobile outright, however if you're on contract and getting an upgrade or signing for a new contract you might as well go for another mobile.

I thought LTE wasn't standard, but some Verizon-specific thing? If this is the case... I can see why the Nexus 4 doesn't have it... But do correct me if I'm wrong I've only heard of LTE with Verizon, but haven't actually looked into it at all (I just know it's something I'll probably not use).

The lg optimus g has lte, its also twice the price. Is lte worth an extra $300 to you?
Personally it would be nice to have LTE because I live in a big city in Canada where there are 3 big carriers that offer LTE using the same bands. I always like to have the latest tech but other than that the nexus 4 seems to fit most of my needs with the DC-HSPA which my carrier also offers. I understand the cost issue but that aside if e phone has LTE than everyone will be happy because places without LTE people can still enjoy HSPA.

Just curious, has Google ever officially described what the Nexus program is? Where can I find out more information about it rather than just taking the words from third party people?
Never needed LTE and probably won't need it until it's shoved down my throat in the future. My current carrier only has 3 mbps (real performance) data connections and I only use it for Facebook, email, checking websites, so I don't really think I need LTE. Though, I'd be happy if they would at least give us true HSPA+ speeds at 21 mbps though...
deltatux
I fully blame Verizon for botching the Galaxy Nexus release for this. It's just too much of a burden for Google to support. It takes Verizon and Sprint forever to roll OS updates, whereas other carriers just push the updates when Google releases them.
I will only get Nexus phones, and am on Verzion, so it's disappointing, but I know why,
Unless there's a carrier with LTE that doesn't require a contract, then I have absolutely no need for it.
No LTE in a new flagship phone = bad
But hey, the technology isn't wise spread yet either, so the benefit would only be to the US and some European countries. So I believe thay Google/LG decided not to hurry with putting that tech in their new phone for now. Nexus 5 is 100% gonna have it, or maybe LG is gonna release a 4G model later
No LTE here anyway. But its rumored to be right around the corner..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
My data is like 700 KB/s tops lol. I'm fine with it, I'll be fine with HSPA+.
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
Euroskank AOKP (Build 5 - 4.1.2)
Matrix Kernel (24.0 - CFS)
Ondemmand (Screen On) (800/200)
Wheatly (Screen Off) (400/200)
Deep Idle (N/A - Noop)
BLX (N/A - Inverted Apps)
Black Exodus (Stock Voltage)
The speeds of LTE are awesome. Everything else that goes with it is horrible.
The dual radios, lead to battery drain. My phone likes to get caught between 3G and 4G and I'm left with a hot phone in my pocket without signal.
The price of LTE, Verizon is just so expensive.
The fact that you can't make one phone fit all, all LTE implementations are different.
