Gingerbread Port.. - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

HC sucks.. it sucks so badly Im always using my older original P1000 Tab still & dont use the 7.7. I was just reading (and this might be a misprint) that the 7.7 Tab was released in the Philippines w/Gingerbread:
http://www.gadgetreport.me/samsung-galaxy-tab-7-7-p6800-philippines/
To me this sounds like heaven on earth. If this is true, can it be made available for download & install? And if this info about the 7.7 in the Philippines is actually not correct, how hard and what would it take to some developers to get Gingerbrear ported to the 7.7? Im surely not the only one w/this interest & am more than willing to pitch-in to make this happen!
Thanks to all in advance

They just got their facts wrong.
Anyway, ICS is coming soon and you will get that snappy quick feeling back soon enough

My guess is your source just got it mixed up with the Note which actually shipped with GB.

Thats what I thought.. hmmmm yeah regarding ICS I have ONE DREAM ONLY: that someone can help me make a script/mod to force the 7.7 Tab into phone mode under ICS! What I love the most about my P1000 is that its a big phone, not a small tablet like the current HC inteneration of the 7.7 that is way too small for a Tab-like interface. Since ICS supports tablet & phone mods Im sure its possible to make a build to force it into Phone mode. Ive tried doing it with a Nexus and a beta of ICS but failed.. Im bad with scripts & things like that but I know it can be done. The 7.7 with ICS in phone mode will be positively the upgrade for my 7.0 Tab that Ive used now for over 1 & 1/2years & that I still love & use everyday, since I got it! Best tab ever, best phone ever, best "almost" ultra portable tablet ever! Gosh the 7.0 is so amazing.. & Gingerbread as far as Im concerned, perfect!

Even if Gingerbread were to be ported to the 7.7, it wouldn't be properly functional thanks to the lack of physical keys such as Home, Menu and Back.

Yeap very true.. another reason I dislike HC & ICS.. precious screen space lost for the virtual keys.. so stupid..

The dpi changes in build.prop are obsolete in ICS. They still work, technically, but can cause buggy aspect ratio issues.
Changing between phone and tablet mode in ICS is much easier now.
In your build.prop, you can entirely remove the lcd density line altogether, and instead, use the line:
ro.build.characteristics=tablet
-or-
ro.build.characteristics=phone
Easy peasy! Hope that helps!
P.S. To OP: The idea of GB on the 7.7 actually just makes me shudder in horror... HC may have its faults, but at least it has system-wide hardware acceleration by default. GB is just too stuttery for me overall, especially compared to HC and ICS.
Now, on one hand, I can sorta understand where you're coming from with the whole big phone vs small tablet thing, but if what you're really craving is a big phone with GB on it, why not just get the Note? Between the Note and the 7.7, I would say that the 7.7 really is more on the the small tablet side of things whereas the Note is more on the big phone end of the spectrum.
Now, I wonder where a 6.5 inch device would stand...?
P.P.S. OP, have you looked at this yet?

Thanks a lot for the link (very informative) and thank you also for the Phone/ tablet mode switching info.. I cant wait for ICS upgrade on the 7.7 and try it.. by the way my girlfriend has a Galaxy Note.. of course because it has Gingerbread I love it and also for another special reason.. I'm a graphics designer and very particular about display color accuracy.. all phones and tablets have uncalibrated screens.. like the Note is green tinted and my 7.7 is actually VERY yellow.. drives me crazy! BUT, there is an app from one of our members called Soft Screen Tuner that allows to PERFECTLY calibrate the colors on the Galaxy Note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366280
.. its a dream app come true for me, but it it does NOT work on the 7.7 Tab even though the hardware and display type on the note and 7.7 is identical I want so badly to make it work or find a similar app that can tune the colors on the 7.7 Tab. So far, no luck..
Hmmmmm, so let me dream a bit... the 7.7 with ICS in phone mode and with calibrated colors.. yeah... that will be the best tab in the world for me

For me, I think the ultimate device would be if the 7.7 had the same kind of screen as the Note (not in the PenTile RGBG sub-pixel sense, but rather in the s-pen functionality sense), and if the s-pen accessory were like some kind of hybridization of an HM5000, an HM3000, and an s-pen.

Need some opinions

I am looking to buy a Galaxy Tab 2. I had the Nook Tablet and loved the size but wanted a tablet that was an actual tablet. I ended up buying the new ipad but things were tight and ended up having to sell it.
I want another tablet and love the size, speed, and battery life.I was playing with it at Best Buy and noticed that you can only use the entire screen in landscape mode. Are there any custom roms that fix this. Also, is everyone pretty happy with your GT2? I have an iphone and I love it. But I miss having an android device that I can customize and mess with. Just wanna make sure this is the right one. I think for the price, you can't miss!
Worth it!!
I love mine. Right now I am using the new 10.1 right now. I started with the 7in thinking I wouldn't want it to big. I then went to the 8.9 and yet again wanted bigger one. Plus it was nice the tab 2 10.1 came out as the same price as the 8.9. I bought mine at micro center; they had it for $249 which is 50 cheaper than best buy. Anyway yes Samsung pretty much owns the market. I loved all my galaxy tablets. Hope this helps and good luck.
I am loving my Tab 2 7.0. In fact, I have purchased several Android tablets looking for that right one, and I think I have deduced that none are really iPad killers, but the Tab 2 7.0 comes as close to being the ideal Android Tablet there is. I like it so much that I will more than likely sell my Xoom Wifi, and perhaps Transformer Prime and pick up the Tab 2 10.1.
PROS: size and feel, battery life it great (I charge about every other day with moderate us - now if you streamed video constantly, I would say you would charge every day). Speed is very nice. Browsing with no lag - very zippy. GPS works great. I have a 7" car mount and use it for Navigation and it works great. Good sound from the dual speakers (at least for this size of tablet). Screen is sharp. It has a power saving mode available in the settings that may extend your battery life a bit.
CONS: Of course, Touchwiz, but it sounds like you would customize, anyway. I just put Apex Launcher on it for now (I have no plans to root it and flash custom ROM at this time). The automatic brightness setting is almost always too dim for my tastes. This sounds wierd, but it is the hardest tablet to clean that I own - the screen is very "slimy" for lack of a better term. I can take microfiber cloths to any of my other tablets, and will little effort have them mirror shined, but it takes work on the Tab 2 7.0 - everything just smears really bad. Never experienced this before with a tablet. The last con is the backing - though it looks cool, the plastic is hard and slick - prone to scratches and dropping as it can slide out of your hands.
You have another option in the Kindle Fire. Head over to the Kindle Fire Development thread and check out some of the wonderful ROMS available there - I use GedeROM 1.55. If times are tight, you can pick up a Fire for next to nothing, root it and have a nearly pure ICS experience on it. I actually like the Fire's form factor better than the Tab 2 7.0. Cons of course are no Bluetooth, GPS, or Camera - which may be a killer for most. I would consider it the ultimate secondary cheap tablet to play with.
Good luck!
Rob
You may want to look at the Asus Prime line or the Acer Iconia Line. The development section on the Tab 2 is pitiful. There are only 2 ROMs available. Acer is about to release their A700 which will make the Tab 2 look like a toy. And the Asus line is really starting to get interesting. I bought the Tab 2 for my son, bought the 7" from Costco and when I got home it was the 10.1 inch. So I'll keep it but until the development increases for this tablet you may want to look elsewhere.
I suggest that the OP heads over to the Prime XDA forums before investing into any Asus tablet. Six months with mine has been nothing but disappointments. I simply cannot and will not recommend Asus to anyone. Any correspondence with them is further reason to avoid. They are going to have to have English based support to penetrate the US market further. If not phone, then at least someone to translate their support site and email correspondence for them. I recently had an owner survey from them and it was embarrassing.
Again, it is up to the OP to research, however and determine their own view.

I use setcpu to over clock all of my devices. The app is cheap but in actuality is very polished and does its job well.
I also removed both for my own reasons (I like a very simplistic look). I would recommend finding the ROM you like, and backing it up and then trying a bunch of different mods.

Should i get the 7.7 or stick with my Note

I really like my note ....but im i also luv the 7.7...so im asking for a opinion from you guys....is it worth the trade.....
This belongs in general not development...
Anyway, I prefer the size of the 7.7 screen, and the fact that it's not pentile. But the stylus and ICS make the Note very attractive.
I have them both the note is better for phone functions and the 7.7 is better for tablet functions, easy answer buy them both and while your at it you might as well get an asus prime so you also have a 10 inch tablet !
I have them both but only using my 6800 now.
Thanks for all the input ive been looking for the perfect solution i like the tab and want big screen plus make calls.
Do you think its worth a trade . .would it be pretty even .

keep your note with you please.
Its not that tab is not good,
but note has good developer support, while this tab has very poor developer support.
Even it has less support from samaung itself very less updates, where as note has good samsung support.
i will advice you to not to trade your device for this.
Its your choice.
Good luck
I would recommend sticking with the Note if you are into custom ROMS or ICS.
thanks for all yalls help ...hopefully i can stumble upon a INT version pretty cheap and get that one .....and patiently wait for the note 2....
now should i get the 7.7 since its been annouced that ics is coming ....btw anyone interested in trading 7.7 for a note ....
I can't believe I'm considering this, but---possibly...
-----------
The indefinite microcosm becomes the indefinite macrocosm in a definite manner and by definite means...and vice versa.
I REALLY like this tab. I LOVE drawing on it. Its NOT too big, but I keep tearing the rubber from capacitive styli... and pressure sensitivity..... that was the big toss up for me, the pressure sesitivity... it's running ics now? I have a p6800 and I LOVE it. Can I give up the extra screen realestate for pressure sensitivity? Forum? Can you help me decide if I should make this trade? This is probably where PM'S become good. But now let me REALLY research the Note and I'll get back to you.
Got the 7.7 yesterday. I have been debating it for months. I still have the Note... will be keeping both! Screen is amazing on 7.7...just like the S2. Also, unlike many tabs, the 7 screens are preserved and it is not cut down to 5. There is a tiny bit of lag sometimes when transitioning screens, hopefully this will go with ics update. But, it wont be the end of the world if it doesnt. I like the handiness of the mini app tray and having some ability to personalize this. Thought i would miss the IR function (which has been taken out of the final 7.7 UK model), but i dont. I have no issue with other styli not being pressure sensitive...i am impressed with writing and drawing ability on 7.7. However, unlike many on here, this function is not essential for my lifestyle or my work. I plan to use my 7.7 as a phone and media device when at home for long periods or travelling. This will save my battery on my Note ... I will use my Note for work.

Yep the default launcher lags during transitioning. The default TW launcher is the worse of its kind. Any other launcher you could find on earth is better than it.
They said ICS will be there for 7.7 next month, but even so why torture your tab with TW launcher anymore? I recommend GO Launcher HD, or you could try Lightning.
Yeah well the offer still stands if anyone wants to pm me . . . .tab for a note . . .

{IDEA} Port TouchWiz from the Note 10.1 to the N7000

Now before I begin, I know there's already a TouchWiz tablet mode in the development forum based off of the the best qualities of the N7000 and the GTab 7.7 (both of which I own), and I've tried it already; it's very exciting development! However, as much as I like this tweak, and as cool as it is (credit given where it's due), wouldn't it be even better if we could simply port a stock Note 10.1 ROM directly to the N7000? I know that the N7000's hardware isn't anywhere near as impressive as the quad-core 2gb beast that the 10.1 is, but the screen resolution of both is the same, and the N7000 is no slouch in the performance department even 1 year on, so maybe it's worth a try?
As I mentioned, I own both the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the N7000. I love both devices. However, I primarily use the 7.7 as my daily driver, mainly because I prefer the tablet interface of Android vs the phone layout used in the stock Note. Thus, my N7000 has sat on my desk, more often than not, as more of a test bed and frankly as more of a toy to use for playing around with all the ROM's that are out there for it (again, credit where it's due!). I've already played around with all the tablet mode options out there; everything from AOSP/AOKP in tablet mode, to the lovely Paranoid hybrid ROM, and so on. However, even then, not everything is as it should be. The S-Pen functionality is greatly reduced, accessories such as MHL output and USB OTG don't always work, and hardware accelerated video playback is usually spotty. In short, it always seems to come close, but it's never quite a perfect fit; there's always something missing.
By porting the Note 10.1's stock TouchWiz to our Note, perhaps that may bring the best of all worlds: a proper TouchWiz tablet UX, with full S-Pen functionality, and all other stock features working properly as they were designed, not to mention the hovering mini-apps for simple things like accessing the dialer, messaging, S-Planner, etc.
If I could have that kind of experience on my current Note, not only would I be disinclined even to get the Note 2, but I think I might just sell my 7.7 as well!! This, for me, would truly be the best of both worlds, which is exactly what Samsung originally intended for the Note when the débuted it at last year's IFA 2011. Having that now would give the N7000 a whole new lease on life; I'm not about to give up on it yet!
What do you guys think?
I was thinking the same
ME TOO )))
Hmm, good to know I wasn't alone! Now, if only we could get the attention of some interested developers! I'd do it myself if I had the know-how (and the free time!)

What an awesome idea. I'd love to have something like LiquidBlack ROM but able to run S Planner which I love. And if the perfection of NoteCore kernel were included then it would make my Note into the phone it should have been back in November 2011 when I bought it!

It'll be completely irrelevant to port Note 10.1 ROM to OG Note.

Yeah, but the Note 2 and the S3 UI's are still all just PHONE features. The Note and the Note 2 are still just big phones with pens from a UI standpoint. While I'm not knocking that in and of itself (for many folks, retaining the phone UI on a large screen is preferable), I am pointing out that it still qualifies the Note(2) as just a really big phone, not a really small tablet.
All I'm lobbying for here is a proper TouchWiz option for the N7000 to be that really small tablet (with all the functionality and driver support of other TouchWiz builds) instead of a really big phone.
Some people prefer the phone UI, others the tablet UI. I don't want to sacrifice any functionality at all if I want to use a tablet UI out of preference. The same choice should be offered to everyone else too!

What would be a solution to have a ROM that you can connect in 160 dpi to your monitor with a MHL ?
As far as a I know aosp/aokp does not work, and stock devs managed to lower down to 240 max
Regards
Sounds like a really good idea, I hope some great dev make this possible.
The Note 10.1 has issues with multi-app performance (eg the apps aren't truly running simultaneously). Also, this is limited to only specific apps which can work multi-screen.
I don't really see what the benefit would be here. Plus doesn't it have more in common with the N7100 than the N7000?
Not much benefit for a ton of work which will likely be found useless upstream.
Also lately there have been very few dev projects for the Note 10.1 in general (take a look at their dev subforum)

[Q] Is the Tab2 on the bleeding edge?

Is it only me who is a little bit disappointed about the tab2/5110?
Just bought one today as a present. Had good experience with a Acer A500 for more than a year now and thought the brandnew Tab2 should be the way to go and decided without any research. I have been quite satisfied with all my other Samsung stuff, especially the SIII. Now it turns out the Tab2 is way less performant than my SIII!? Is there anything I miss to become a satisfied customer!?
Just starting to think about returning the Tab2 and change for new Acer or other stuff, have to sleep over this now.
Other question: Is there anything like Acer Print on the Tab2? Tried this Epson app from the Playstore but this seems not to integrate in browsers and stuff....
Thx a lot!

Not to sound unsympathetic, but you do know the tab 2 is a dual core, whilst the s3 is a quad core? You admit you did no research...why?
On a more helpful note, the performance does improve when jelly bean installed.

Either return and get galaxy note 10 (quad core flagship samsung tab) or try cm10 (jb unofficial) from www.teamhacksung.org will increase performance considerably
Also try after installing cm10, to install Johnsel overclock kernel and changing overclocking setting from setting/performance
Regarding print i think i read in the manual that you could print with samsung printer (certain models only) ask samsung agent in your country

The Tab2 has been out for a while. Samsung's new hotness is the Note. The Tab2 does perform better with some of the different non-stock roms available. Also, power saving mode throttles the cpu down quite a bit.
Tab 2 was never meant to be cutting edge? None of the tech was even new when it was released. It performs very well if not better than its place as a mid level tablet.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Its not that fast. Its not priced to be.
My phone is faster than my tablet and that's OK with me. You'll need to accept it like I did or return the tab2 and get a more expensive tablet. You have the receipt, right?
Edit: custom roms make a huge performance gain.
ya i would recommended putting aokp on it, i have been using aokp on my tab2 almost the entire time and i love it. its so smooth and responsive.
Thx guys for your constructive answers to my dumb questions . I just thought the Tab2 is the best one can get at the moment as in central Europe it seems just to be available for some weeks now and the Google is just 7in. And as it should become a present I did not do any research before the buy. Anyway, lesson learned...
And yes, the performance running stock ROM is quite bad even after removing a whole bunch of bloatware. Updating the ROM is something which I'd do for sure. But there is an other thing which forgot to tell about and which can not be fixed with a new ROM: The complete lack of any external Interfaces except this proprietary connector thing. Coming from the Acer I'm used to have USB, microUSB, HDMI and so on which has been in use from time to time but having absolutely nothing is something I do not like (and which I blame iPad users regularly for . What is your opinion abot this?
Thx a lot!
Sadly, the connector issue is something you'll face with many tablets. I used to own the acer a500 aswell, and it does take some adjustment. But there are ways around it. You can buy adapters etc. Its not exactly an elegant solution, but its an option.

You are not paying for a bleeding edge device so I supose the answer to your question is "no". But it isnt suposed to be.

What are the options for stock Android?

I think I saw an unofficial Cyanogenmod and AOKP, no Paranoid Android yet? That's my personal favorite. I'm not requesting or trying to come off in that way, I'm just very close to purchasing a tablet and I'd like it if I had those options. So you guys know if any ROM like that are being worked on?

There is only one really custom ROM for Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and it is only for P605 model: Cyanogenmod. That's all, others ROM are based on stocks so I wouldn't expect a huge developer support for this device. :/
Yup. CM looks promising. I hope that it is still around and will make a daily driver, once stock 4.4.2 is mega outdated. Until then i'll stick with that.
Does CM support the stylus in non-Samsung apps with stylus support?
FYI I saw that someone had a "working" CM build on the Tab S 10.5 in their CM11 thread. Tas S 10.5 is exynos and has similar internals to p600..maybe someone can port that over somehow?
Edit: There's a working CM11 port on the tab pro 10.1/12.1 models

Any chance a dev can port these over to the p600? I think the CPU and most of the internals are the same between the tab pro and the note 10.1 2014

The only difference is the pen and the extra 1 gb of ram we have on our model I believe (hardware wise). I don't care so much about CM11 right now since L is around the corner. Hopefully after L comes out, someone would port over CM12 or whatever to the P600.

that is some unhealthy optimism
what I mean is, don't get your hopes up too high or you might be disappointed
I'd love to be proven wrong 'though [AOSP / CM / PA on P600 would be awesome]

Unrealistic..I know lol. Hell I just hope Samsung brings L over officially on this. They will most likely update the Tab S and maybe the Tab Pro..so this should also hopefully get it.
I have my S5 to use for CM12

Samsung usual M.O. (modus operandii) is to bring out the Galaxy Note 10.1 2015ed... It will have the latest stuff and our 2014 ed will be left standing around with its pants around its ankles red with embarrassment...
Anyone remember the Note 10.1 (N800*)?

The thing is that n8000 was not very good from the start, screen was not god at all, processor was good but not that much, battery was meh, plastic body was cheap as it gets. There is not much to do about the note 2014 though; pro tabs came up this year as the premium option for the tablet line and they are almost the same as our beloved tablet, only with amoled display. Maybe an amoled display instead of normal lcd, maybe 64 processor, and i find it difficult they will improve the pen technology; these are the only things i find possible to improve(apart from touchwiz of course).

N8000 was pretty good, yes the screen resolution wasn't super high but the images and video were very good. I get as much battery life out of the N8000 as the P605 and, considering most people get cases, didn't matter much what the body felt like as the leather case felt good anyway...
It could've easily handled the updated Android Samsung release for the P605 but never got anything over ICS (officially)...
Samsung seem to feel it's worth more in profits to release a new tablet, did we need the pro series, than to update existing hardware. Where is the financial advantage of keeping the older stuff up to date?
As for improving the pen technology, they did just that with the Note 4. Has better pressure sensitivity and writing ability than the Note 3. Anything else they'd do is really software improvements.
64 processor and 5gb of RAM would be nice though....

Hey, with that I completely agree; what i didn't agree on was on the "standing around with its pants around its ankles red with embarrassment" part. Far from the internals which are pretty good on both n8000 and p600, pretty much everything from n8000 externally could have been better and I dont think that is the case with the p600. Sure, you can upgrade the pen, the cpu to 64 bits and change lcd for amoled, but those are bells and whisles for the average user we know it has not much impact for the usability overall(like the comparison you make between n8000 and p605); damn, even if anyone takes a look at those pro tabs it is difficult to differentiate it from ours and they are the premium suite right now(contrast to 2013 like our tab was). My point is, even if Samsung decides to do a new Galaxy Note, which it will because its an allmost 2 year old tab, and with the addons we discussed, we cant possibly end up in embararassment as the n8000 did with all its superfluous flaws; even more, if, as you say, Samsung is interested in business more than its interested in the best and inovative technologies I think it will be the kind of jump galaxy s3 did to s4 and a lot of advertisement; if you dont have it in your hand and examine it a little bit most people wont see the difference.
And, n8010 got 4.4 before my p600 officially, so there is that. I bet they just decided not to use the new Touchwiz because Touchwiz is the less optimized crap and not because the internals coultdn't handle it becuase, as you said, n8000 internals are pretty good.

Just my opinion: if you're looking for a stock android option I'd go for another tablet. The note is a great product but only if you need and use the stylus. And you will probably lose at least some pen functionality with cm so I'd say it's not worth it.
Yea I'm starting to get the feeling this isn't the tablet for me. I'll just wait a few weeks for Nexus 9 then. Thanks guys.

CM11 knows nothing about the pen. But will in-app pen support work, for the handful of apps besides the then missing Samsung ones.

It should, and there are many alternatives available to the Samsung apps....

Pen detection with preasure sensitivity and attachment-detachment detection on the tablet still work under cm, or at least they worked on the n8000 note running cm. With those functions working, everything else is a gimmick. Multiwindow can be done with xposed and roms like omni rom, and I bet it would be a much more responsive multitasking. Omnirom works on my acer a500 for gods sake; now imagine a tablet with tegra 2 running today's Touchwiz. (Its Haloween time and we are supposed to think about ugly things). The only downside, or upside as I see it, are the gestures framework that on Touchwiz works anywhere on your tab; features like selecting anything and exporting it as an image or clicking the pen button and double tapping to open "Action Memo" wouldn't be on CM. Because of this though, pen button actually works according to the app using it. An example is Papyrus that gives you the option to change tools when the pen button is clicked. With this in mind, I would say it is worth it; Will we see it, I am not sure anymore. :crying:

Still, if you want anything with stock android, samsung is the worst company to buy from.
If you want some recomendations I say the following:
Shield tablet is a nice 8 inch tablet with 64bit processor and a passive stylus technology(It has stylus but it is not as good as Spen).
Surface 3 is a nice and expencive windows tablet if you are into that(Stylus as good as SPen but with the ups and downs from windows; Also $$$$).
Nexus 9 is an expensive but well worth it, gorgeous tablet but with no known pen functionality.(No directstylus 2.0 technology that we know of; but nexus and good speakers).
Please, if anyone have comments on this suggestions let me know. I love to hear about new tablets, functions and if feature's live to their names.
