Trying to work on my friends Nook and need help - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend is goofy and doesn't remember anything about how he rooted his Nook Color except he used autonooter. He asked me to take a look because he wants to upgrade it to get flash on it and give it to his fiance. I feel it would be easier to go back to stock and start over but if anyone else has any suggestions I would be open to them. All he wants is it to support flash.

what version is he on? is he running stock rooted?
start with this thread if you're just looking at stock rooted:

i'd probably first update to 1.4.2 (the link to the B&N file and what to do is in the thread that was provided earlier) - then manualnooter it using gmpower's helpful thread (put clockwork recovery on an sdcard with the files).
edit to add 1.4.2 link: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Color/379003190/

My friend sent me the stuff he had for the nook and everything he sent me is listed, next. clockworkmod, nookcolor_v1.1.0_r2, win32diskimager-RELEASE-0.1-r15-win32, win32diskimager-RELEASE-0.1-r15-win32, 128mb_rootpack-0.7, auto-nooter-3.0.0, and 1gb_clockwork-0.7, and I have no clue what he actually used here or what everything is.

If I update to it will it wipe out the root that is already on there, if so that would be awesome because I would be able to start from scratch.

Yes... one issue is that if he had CWM installed on EMMC it will not update correctly... you will need to use the stock 1.4.1 cwm flashable I provided in another thread and let the nook update.

I am adding snapshots of the 2 storage spots that pop up when I hook the nook to the computer, maybe it can help you guys determine what my moronic friend actually did.

pal jonny,
While I am proud of your generosity toward your friend by helping him but, seriously, if you don't know what to do, why take up that task? If you know then you can help, sure but based on question your asked up there, I feel you don't.
Getting confusing and performing what you not comfortable with could make your friend's NC a mess.
Your friend, seems like he did it b4, why not let him do this time since he collected all info anyway.

Because I do know what to do, I have rooted 3 phones but the Nook Color is new to me and I don't know what his dumb ass did and neither does he, lol. I am working in a different way than most people have, receiving something already rooted and not knowing what was done to get it to that point. I recently had to un-root my phone and it was easier because I was the person who rooted it to begin with.

I am also asking as many questions to get as much information to make sure I do not brick the device.

My suggestion would be take it back to stock... then install what ROM he desires... quite simple.

If so,
a. if you/he wants custom ROM, get CM7.2 RC1 (KANG is a great version). Just format /data, /system, /cache and Dalvik then install ROM
b. if you/he wants stock ROM, 1.4.2 is the latest. MN 5.0.2.19 should be a good tool to root.

Is there something wrong with the regular cyanogenmod stable 7.1?
If I go stock build does it include flash, he wants to give it to his girlfriend to play movies as well. I am trying to convince him to go with cyanogen mod but he wants the functionality of the nook software, I told him there is a Nook app but he hasn't gotten back to me.

Nothing wrong with CM7.1. It's your choice.
If he wants stock ROM then install stock for him, flash should be well supported.
Note: Nook apps is NOT equivalent of stock feature.

Why use nooks Os when cyanogen has stable 7.02 and a promising ICS? I say give the new phirenook. NOOBS seem to like the modifications. Then install the B&N app and she's good.
Just an idea. I haven't tried the stock for some time.

I am back trying to work on this nook color again and i can say without a doubt all he did was autonooter. So if I update to the newest version of the oem o.s. will it wipe out the autonooter because this will be easier for me if it does.

If there is any recovery on it other than B&N's stock recovery... the update will fail... look for my 1.4.1 cwm flashable stock file.

rooting, wtf!

Come on guys, enough with the extremely complicated rooting process on the galaxy tab. Where's Unrevoked for the gtab? Or the other mainstream android devices.. There are more acronyms being thrown around in the development forum than needs to be. It's obvious many people don't have a clue what they're talking about.
All of my devices are rooted with some flavor of gingerbread (CM7,SalvageMod) excluding my tablet. I know that posting a whiny thread isn't going to motivate anyone but it may give some perspective.. SuperOneClick is about as close as i've seen it come to the what-should-be one click experience.
This forum is frequented by some of the most brilliant hacker/developers our world has to offer, I'm baffled that the galaxy tab is still a bastard child.
/rant
Step 1: Hook phone to PC....
Step 2: Run superoneclick....
Step 3: .........
Step4: profit!!!
Not sure what's hard about it. The galaxy development so far has been amazing roto Paul chainfire Techno and tons more. Awesome helpful devs busting ass in here

Yeah I should have been more clear.. flashing the right binaries and not going down a one way street with your tablet.. I have root, root is nothing special to the average user.
Rotohammer, technomancer, etc I know they do wonderful work. Technomancer is the very reason CM7 is running on the gtab
Anybody aware of any ROM developers (for any device, curious) that may have actually developed a complete root/rom application for windows/osx/linux? As in, click a button, root, adb push some files, reboot and start the install process?
Thanks!
I think you need to make the distinction between rooting and flashing a ROM or people might be confused by the thread title:
CyanogenMod 7 (CM7), MoDaCo Custom ROM, Rotohammer ROMs...these are all cooked or modified ROMs which can be flashed onto a device to give it (or remove from it) certain features. Root user access can be one of these features.
Rooting is the process of gaining access to the root (Super User) account on the device and thus being able to run applications which would have otherwise been restricted access to certain areas of the filesystem.
So flashing a custom ROM can be synonymous with rooting, but not vice versa.
I feel the same about the tab threads. The discussions, flashing, etc are seem a bit complicated. I am very greatful for all the work that the dev and chefs do, but it is easier to flash CWM and Android to my winmo HD2 than it is to put a custom rom on my tab!!! I have yet to make any mods to the tab othern than rooting because I really dont want to mess things up. I am waiting and hoping this process becomes simpler soon.

The MoDaCo kernel effectively does what you want - gives you CWM in recovery so you can apply update.zip files same as you would on an HD2, with the exception of radio images (as far as I'm aware, though even that should be possible).
Yes, you need to use Odin/Heimdall to flash the modified kernel to begin with, but that isn't exactly much of a hardship.
Regards,
Dave
Exactly.. Flash modaco kernal using Odin, choose PDA and flash. Reboot and it auto converts to ext4 and voila cwm on the tab

His rom thread states that you need to have cwm on your tab before you load his rom. The only cwm that I see on XDA is a beta one. I really dont want to flash a beta version. Is there a full release for the USA Tmobile tab out there?
I have to agree. I thought coming over here while being an avid T-Mo Vibrant flasher that this would be a breeze. I have been real adamant about doing anything other than root my Tab because there seems to be more of a difference in things than I thought.
I am not one to come in and ask questions when I know the answers are out there, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer. I don't even know if what is already on my Tab is the newest or if I am missing out. I see posts that say "OMG Don't flash this or your Tab will grow arms and beat the sh*t out of you!!!" and I'm like "Huh?!"
My Tab has a baseband of T849UVJJB and the build is FROYO.UVJJB am I missing the best new thing? I'd love to give my Tab some Gingerbread love while I'm waiting on the guys to throw together something awesome with the newly released source on the Vibrant forums.

Yes, before you load his *ROM*. We're talking the kernel here. See this thread.
FWIW, pretty much anything you find on XDA can be considered beta software!

Yes, the MoDaCo kernel -- very simple to install -- it will include CWM and convert your filesystem to ext4. Even if you leave it at that, with your stock ROM, the difference is incredible.
Just flashed the kernel. Converting to ext4 and everything is backing up. Thanks for the info.

Use the kernal by Chainfire on top of Roto JMI. That will give you the CWM3 in one simple step.
You go on to the other kernals if you want to change your format of your internal sd card to the ext4 format instead of the rfs format.

The tab is a very wide distribution, so people of very different backgrounds are on these forums asking many of the same questions. On other forums someone asking a question that was previously answered usually gets disemboweled, but here we have a more patient tone, so instead of thinking before posting, we get way more than our share of "help, I think I melted my precious".
The tab is really just a bigger vibrant. They are 6 months further along than us. In 6 months this thing will make us toast and coffee.

anyone have a backup copy of 4.010.11?

So I don't remember what build I originally had, didn't backup my ROM bcus im a nub, made a mistake editing a file in system/lib which caused my tablet not to boot past the android screen. Came to this forum for some help, kjy2010 came to my rescue. provided me with a full build of 4.010.40 GEN1, placed update.zip in external SD, booted into recovery mode & let it do its thing. worked like a charm & fixed my issue, but then someone said I should have a US build, can anyone tell me why? if so.. anyone have a copy of 4.010.11 they can provide me with & how I would go about to install it. Is it the same concept as done before? Really the main thing is, will I have issues downloading new updates? if I don't switch to 4.010.11.. or will I have an issue regardless bcus I don't have the original ROM.. & if so.. how am I going to be able to work around it in the future.

Market....get Acery Recovery Installer. After you install it, go into the app and have it install Clockwork recovery mod, miking sure you click yes when it asks you to backup your recover image.
Here is the thread on CWM, although you no longer need to push to install thanks to Acer recovery installer:

Mainly the differences are in the software you get with the tablet and certain underlying factors in the settings, like what channels are allowed in wifi....especially wifi n which allows a greater variety of channels, bands, etc. The world around uses different channels based on government regulations/standards.
I suspect this is why a number of people have issues with connecting to Wifi. They get ROMS from XDA, update their U.S tablets with foreign ROMS and vice versa and then have wifi issues.
You technically don't HAVE to be on a U.S version if you're in the U.S, but for the reasons above, I wouldn't ever recommend using a foreign ROM.

Full (not OTA) Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2

No one seems to show GEN2 any love. Its all GEN1 and CUS7. For those that want GEN2 (I live in US), well here you are. A full image for Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2. This is not edited in any way. (This means not rooted). This is probably not going to be useful to the average person. For a modified (but rooted) ROM of this, look here
This is not OTA and can be used without ClockWorkMod (CWM) or any modifications of any kind.
Unzip Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.zip and place update.zip on the root of your SD card.
I should also mention this is Honeycomb 3.2 for those that don't keep track of the build numbers (and who can blame you?), and this DOES have a locked bootloader. But, nevertheless, and valid source for flashing and other things!

Yea I wouldn't worry 2 much about GEN2. If you have a choice, get GEN2. Otherwise it doesnt matter. The differences are mostly system files related to keyboards and databases and such from what I have dissected.
Like spelling color as colour and other oddities.
That and different bloatware, not all the same as the US

Vache has a downgrade image to Acer_A501_1.309.02_COM_GEN1 that will work with the new locked bootloader. Root that image then install CWM THEN install a custom rom. That will prevent the boot verification issue!

I live in the us and while I have rooted my a500 I haven't installed a custom rom yet because the few stock roms are gen1. I want to stay as close to stock as possible and would love to have this 7.006.01_com_gen2 with just root and and bootloader fixed. I thought your "clean" rom might work for me but I'd prefer to have just the stock rom with few modifications. Any idea where I might find something like that?

that's correct. More specifically, the unlocking will do that, rooting itself won't, but to my knowledge, there is no way to root the xoom without unlocking first. (read more on this below)

I am not aware of any way to do that. Regardless of that, you shouldn't, it would be much better to just install the apps from market after upgrading from HC to ICS.

no. Unlocking will unlock the bootloader, so that you can flash stuff using fastboot-commands (and you will use that to flash a custom recovery). Rooting will root your device, thus giving you "administrator privileges" and, if you use the "universial xoom root", conserve your recovery from being overwritten by the stock rom. If you want to install another rom, you'll have to do so manually (but installing a new rom is no big deal)
/****** EDIT ******
regarding root without unlock: in this thread the op states, that the method mentioned there will also work on your device (as a matter of fact any Motorola device with froyo or honeycomb)

As far as I can see, this method will not unlock the bootloader.
I have not tried it and I won't, as I'd have to flash a stock rom and lock my xoom again to see if it works, but if you're going to try it, please keep us posted here and/ore in the thread I mentioned
thanks for the reply,
tbe last days i am trying to find out what options do i have.
i need your help againto clear some new issues.
1. i have the mz691 and hc 3.2 ,from wht i read i must unlock, then install cwm for a backup if i want.then root. will i still have the hc 3.2?? i am a bit afraid to install ather roms.
2.from my researh i found out that there are many roms. wht is the best?
is the ice scream sandwich compatible with my device?if yes ,what version?i prefer not to go to nitlies.
3.what is the universal root xoom ?
thanks,i apreciate your help

Assuming that you acutally have a MZ601 and not a MZ691 (never heard of that one before), yes, you really need to unlock, install cwm, backup, then root. Note, however, that this backup will only back up your current rom, it will NOT backup your data (as unlocking will delete your data and you must unlock your device to be able to install cwm). None of these steps will install another rom, thus you'll still be at 3.2.

Well, as a matter of fact, there are not so many roms for the MZ601. The one I use is the (usually most current) Team EOS Nightly for MZ601. If you don't want to go with nightlies, just go with the stable Team EOS 1.0.0. However, I don't see any disadvantages at all in using nightlies. Bear in mind that you do not HAVE to update on a daily basis Except from the one nighly that introduced cornerstone, they are just as stable as the 1.0.0.

That is a root method developed by solarnz link to thread. This method should work on every xoom that can be bootloader-unlocked. (Thats all of them, except family edition and Xoom2/Xyboard)
many thanks,
ok.i am installing a new rom and continue installing apps.when i install new rom i will loose again my aps?yes, unlocking deletes all data, tbe same apply if i install another rom?
is there a way to backup my aps in original apk form? or mayby download them initialy in .apk file and have them on a storage?
what is this deep sleep problem the ics nightly have? do you have any other problems.what is this cornerstone?
yes the xoom is the 601.my mistake.
thans again!!!

depends... If you are switching between totally different roms you should wipe your /data-partition, thus you'd loose your apps. If you upgrade from one version of a rom to another version of that same rom you should be fine without wiping /data, so you'll keep all your apps.

well, maybe it's possible to get the original .apk-files from somewhere, but for all those apps you got from the android market that's just plain useless. You may, however, be able to backup your apps and data using titanium backup once your xoom is rooted.
AchillesGr said:

your xooms processor has a so-called deep-sleep feature that reduces power consumption to almost zero when the cpu is not used. On my xoom, and apparently also on others, this feature does not work on current EOS roms (I ain't even sure if it ever did) when the xoom is connected to a wifi network. On 3G-Networks it goes into deep-sleep as it should. Solarnz has confirmed that he thinks that this is a wifi-issue which he will address in the (hopefully not so distant) future.

It's a system that lets you open more than one app at once. There is one build of the Team EOS roms where it is included, you can try that if you like. But it screwed a lot of things up and made the system somewhat unstable, so it was removed in the next build. here is a website where you can have a look at what cornerstone looks like.
ok,
i will try to root today and then i will try to flash the eos everest ics.
you saied that i need to clear-wipe zoom before update to diferrent rom. how to do that?
from cwm recovery?
can you please direct me what i need to wipe and how?
thanks agaon!!

[Q] [LEAK/DEV][ICS 4.0.3] Acer_AV041_A500_0.009.00_WW_GEN1 Q&A

I don't have enough posts to add to the thread in the Dev forums, so I will ask here.
My Iconia A500 is not rooted, I don't feel that I needed it to be rooted most of the time. Now that is out of the way, I have questions.
Is there a version of this Dev leak that I can flash if I don't care about rooting or recovery? I believe the version he leaked is a CWM or RA recovery flashable only, so I would need the original untouched release.
If I do flash this, I should be able to flash future versions correct, or possibly the final version of the ICS release?
Essentially I would like to use this release on my tablet without caring about root or recovery, but I also don't want to screw myself for future releases.
Is it possible to reflash back to an old Honeycomb release?
You might not be able to post in the dev thread, but you can read it. All your answers are in there, most are even in the OP!

If you don't care about root or recovery, than it is best you stay stock, and wait for OTA updates. This will keep you relatively safe.
Take a deep Breath this could turn out to have issues and not be complete.. There is only reports that it is flash-able.This does not guarantee that is will Run properly. As its a Acer development rom leaked to the public..
I will try it after there are 2 or 3 more days of comments. If it seems to be working well.I must have Root. Hope the post above mine has helped.
JUST Think if it does not pan out you can be one that said IM SMART I WAITED..
GOOD LUCK . DONT CROSS THE STREET WITHOUT LOOKING BOTH WAYS.
This rom is very easy to be flashed on the a500, dear erica_renee. I've done it tonight and I did come, like you, from the latest version of the unrooted Acer stock ROM.
In order to do this, you must:
- flash from your PC, a rooted rom version 3.2 on your tablet with the little app "DotNetDetecter". You can download it from somewhere on XDA Iconia A500's developers threads but I don't remember in which thread I found it.
- install the app "Acer Recovery" (free on the market)
- download the zip of RA recovery (You'll find the link in the Vache's thread) and install this recovery from your CMW recovery you've installed with the rooted rom 3.2 in the first step
- download and install from the RA recovery the ROM ICS that you can download on the website of Vache... Choose the "RA recovery" version of this ROM.
Very pleasant version, this ICS ROM ... but the low volume defect when I record sounds is still present...
Again and again I'm more and more convinced that this problem comes from the LOW QUALITY of these microphones !!!

are you saying that you flashed the cwm version of this on a a500.or do you have a501 Or are you using the non rooted full rom version.. And yes the mic issue i agree with . Considering going to Black box and buying upgraded mics and install . but i dont use it that much.
I have an Iconia A500, renee and I flashed the leaked Acer ICS stock ROM that Vache proposes on his website.
The link is on the first page of his thread.

ok .
now can you go to the root for a200 thread and follow that procedure and see if it will ROOT For you..
this could be the solution if so..
Thanks in advance...
I'd try it myself, but I don't want to lose my current bootloader and the ability to flash custom roms, so I'll just wait.
I'm just waiting for someone to confirm they can return to 3.2.1 via apx mode, once confirmed ill flash it

Impatience is often followed by hardship Turmoil.
Wow that was good even for blonde chic..
Why do you fear not being able to go back to honeycomb ?
ICS a real improvement, for me. Google chrome is a great browser too.
These are my first impressions anyway. Very good, very pleasant.
But, if you're not in a hurry, you can wait one more month, of course.

I MUST have root access. that is all..
may i ask if you have checked the fallow..
GPS.
Can you tether to a android ad-hoc network
does Ti Backup work.
Does email exchange work.
I could go on but i will not .. THANKS IN Advance
No root on ICS (yet?).
I guess that you will loose it as well when you will install this Rom as an update by OTA...
I don't really need a root on my tablet, personaly, except when I want to test a custom Rom.
There is maybe a solution to keep the root anyway. Check in the thread of Vache.
Apart from that, everything works better than ever for me (gps, tether through my htc Desire, caméra, etc ... except the recurrent prob with the microphones ).
I don't use Titanium backup (that needs root, isn't it?) but MyBackup pro.
Email exchange? Do you mean the app working with Outlook on Windows? I don't use it neither. I use gmail and I import my other accounts on gmail. Sorry. But my email accounts (pop) work perfectly well.
Everything works very well actually with this Rom. I didn't notice any problem till now. No way to go back to HC...
I wonder if Thor has this yet. He is probably the best a500 ICS dev right now.

Just to let you know. I have flashed with the full 4.0.3 (not CWM/rooted one), and then used the first method here to restore back to 3.0.1, then installed CWM to install a ROM without any problems. I have since updated to 4.0.3 full again as it's by far the best ROM for me.
Ny the way, I noticed this morning that the ability to disable bloatware has been added to the stock ics rom via app section of settings, so one less reason for me to need root.

Thanks Antarell,
This is good to know for people who would be nostalgic of Honeycomb
By the way, there is a simplier way to go back to HC with a root. That's the one I've used several times with no bad issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
This leak flies. Its awesome. Actually makes me not care about losing recovery. I really couldn't ask for more from this. At least we know there's a way back if we really need it.
