[Q] Hd2 ICS Wi-Fi Calling - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi,
I installed Tytung's ICS v. 1.4 on my Hd2 yesterday. It is a great work. Question is whether the Hd2 with Ice Cream Sandwhch can do T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling? TyTung has a Wi-Fi calling download but it seems to be designed for Ginger Bread.

I haven't had any problems using the GB Wifi Calling addon to Tytung ICS or MIUI-AU ICS. =) flash away and enjoy!

Good Advice, thanks.

Flash ... in the pan
Hi,
I tried flashing that radio. I think I did it right. Wiped the Dalvik cache, etc. Wifi calling won't work. Here's the error message: "Error: 'Connection Error': Wi-Fi Calling Android Application." Are you familiar with the error? At times, the phone says I need to register with Tmobile. Any ideas?

Do you have a newer sim card? I know the older sim cards are not compatible with wifi calling, at least not on the hd2.

Thank you, but I don‘t know if it is the newer type. How do I tell? The card came with the phone in April 2010. If I buy a new card, do I have to reinstall everything? Sorry, I am very new at this. I am pretty sure that I don't have a ext SD area, and the ROM is NAND.

I would suggest calling Tmo, just tell them that you need a new sim card as your phone keeps dropping from the network. They should send you one for free.

Thanks
For some reason, I was thinking that the issue was [possibly] the SD card, not the sim card. Now that I think about it, maybe the problem is that I went through Family Mobile service. It's the T-Mobile network, but maybe you can't do wi-fi if your Sim came through T-Mobile's Family Mobile offer.

That shouldn't be an issue, as long as you are on Tmo service then you should have that option available. If you had a Sensation then it would be working for you, you just need to get a new sim and try again.

TMO Advice
First of all, I really appreciate your advice. I went to a TMO store at lunch and had them look at the sim card. They said it is the new type. They told me, however, that I need to have TMO technical support to add wi-fi calling to the plan. The representative said it is a no cost addition, but you have to go through the process. I hope to get that done tonight. He said Walmart could do it, but advised that it is best to call TMO. I hope that work. It would make my phone much more of a asset.
Ndmand

I didn't have to have to do anything to my phone plan to add wifi calling. What he is probably referring to is FREE wifi calling where it doesn't take the minutes out of your bucket. 2010 is definitely too old of a sim card. It probably would work fine with other phones, but for the HD2 you need the newest sim card. Read this thread, it is where I learned about the sim card thing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038784

You are correct about it being added to your plan by the way, I assumed you had done that already, sorry. Just call Tmo, if they don't know what you are talking about call back and speak with someone else. They should be able to set you up.

How do we know if our plan includes the wifi calling feature that does not use our calls against our minutes or if it is using our minutes even when on wifi

T-Mobile actually does not do that type of wifi calling anymore, once they made that feature free they started counting it against your minutes. The purpose of wifi calling now is more to help with low signal areas.

I'm running Nexus HD2-ICS-CM9-v1.6 and I flashed Tytung's wifi calling for GB addon, but wifi calling doesn't show up as an app like it did running GB, am I missing something? Worked fine on GB. -Thanks

Doesn't Work with Wal-Mart T-Mobile
Thanks,
My phone would show the wi-fi calling interface, but it still would not work. I am convinced that part of my problem, probably the only problem, is that I am using the Wal-Mart T-Mobile. Wal-Mart's offer is $45 a month with unlimited calling, texting and Internet, but high speed Internet is limited to the first 250 megabytes. Well, after talking to them, I don't think their system is set to do wi-fi calling. I plan to stay cheap and do without the wi-fi calling although it would benefit me greatly.
Michael

Why don't you try it on a Gingerbread ROM first just to see if you can get it working there? I may try it on ICS next time I plan to update my ROM (in case it screws it up).

Hello,
I couldnt post under the WIFI Calling http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038784
Or I would have.
This was the closest thread I could find.
I am using ROM: NexusHD2-ICS-CM9-HWA_V2.7.zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860
Baseband ver: 15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14
Ok my issue was:
I was on an earlier version of android (I believe it was 4.0.1?) I flashed WIFI calling then restarted. When Android started up said Android is updating. As soon as I would activate WIFI phone would freeze. So I then updated to what is above.
Now when I flashed WIFI calling to new ICS 4.0.4 the phone lost Baseband "Raido" but WIFI would work lol. WIFI calling app would not start.
So I reinstalled ICS rom, phone back to normal. Basband back.
So if anyone has same issue that fixed mine. Would like to get it working if anyone could help me though

the app works.. but the calling not.. says invalid sim at the app. so cant do anything.
can you call via wifi?
but wth do you want to call via wifi?
it costs money too. and extra connection.
why will you use wifi when you can call 24/7 with your sim all day ?

wifi calling costs many though?
i read on that app it just costs as much as cellulair data.
so why in earth will people use wifi calling? they can just call without wifi. its called a PLAN
I get invalid sim as well I am on vodafone and not |T-Mobile..
Maybe you could change it to work on Vodafone?
i have tmobile, maybe thats why? might have to do with the APN or something
yay this is good but the thing I see is that if you are calling it may be going to the t-mobile servers ofc if thats the case only t-mobile sims may be able to get unless we edit the apk or spoof our sim but then also im guessing the wifi calling costs so not sure how this would work xD nice though
totally non sense. how can someone call using wifi or whatever internet source you may have to any cellular or telephone number untill you don't have some service provider etc... if this wifi calling is working over the internet, what application is it using?
seems totally fake or irrelavent
This apps works because i put the phone in airplain mode and use wifi only.
If you guys having problem then maybe it your phone. But, my phone is working, be glad that you have wifi calling.
This an oct 22,2008 phone not even the iphone 3g has this feature.
I have t-mobile usa provider phone.

quite right, you think we can get a workaround?
I dont know im going to buy a new phone because i miss adobe flash content so much. I know this is out of topic but i miss my original droid before it got messed up.
G1 is nice when it was a backup phone in 2010. My main phone in 2008/2009 most of the time, until i sold my cliq. But, now i just want a phone with higher specs.
I try playing gameloft games HD/3D games that isnt working because of processor we have.
This developer now a days is coding their apps to make it work with 3.5 inches and beyond, with higher frame,Power vr ship specs.
I love my g1, but im going to buy either g2 or hd 7.
I think i speak for everyone having an phone for to long loses it power in long run.
And, wifi calling on this app only work with T-mobile sim card and wifi of course.
There is a wifi app.
it was ripped off the G2 and ported to the vibrant, so it is possible.
however its not that good.
it was taken out of most roms on the vibrant because of its buggyness/uslessness.
it drains battery pretty bad even when not running.
it uses minutes even when calling through wifi (the only purpose of the app is to get clear signal in places where there is none for tmobile customers and not to save on minutes)
Its just kinda buggy overall.
hopefully they'll release a cleaner app in the future, but for now its pointless if you get decent signal at home.
Honestly, this apps work fine to me. Im just disappointed that the developer now a days isnt supporting older device by coding the apps to higher specs phone.
Wanted to get an android phone with wifi calling capability for a friend who is currently in Iraq. My budget will not allow me to a buy a g2/mt4g, and a g1 seems like the cheapest option so this is where I began looking. So if I added an extra line on my family plan, grabbed a g1, rooted and installed this app would my friend be able to make calls as long as he has a wifi connection? Can anyone confirm this works without any access to the tmobile network?

I'm not sure about on the g1, but on other phones it works, but it still uses t-mobile minutes.
so you can be away from the t-mobile network, but you still need to have a t-mobile plan and minutes.
its basicaly for those who have horrible signal at home, but do have a wifi connection.

Android Build with Wi-Fi calling?

Does anyone know of any specific Android build than enables me to make phone calls through wi-fi without using an app like skype. Just regular old T-Mobile wi-fi calling.

All builds with tytung r10 kernel support T-Mous wifi calling.
I just installed NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.7 [GRJ22/Android2.3.4][Kernel:tytung_r10]
last night and it still wouldn't let me dial out through wi-fi. I don't want skype because t-mobile offers it as a free service. I just live in an area where T-Mobile doesn't have coverage and want to use wi-fi as a way to make my normal phone calls. I want to call nationally and not pay additional or get a different number for an app like skype or some of the others. That one had tytung r10 but still wouldn't work. Any other ideas?

The only one working on T-Mobile wifi calling is tytung without being a T-Mobile user himself.
I would suggest start reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038784
All ROMs with tytung r10 kernel have enabled the wifi calling function.
I am not a T-Mobile user and i don't know what is needed for wifi calling to work but i suspect you need an app to enable that function.
Check the picture of the 1st post of the link i provided.
I appreciate it. I checked it out. I don't think it is fully functional yet but it seems like some good people are on it. It actually normally doesn't use an app. Once wi-fi is connected it just routes your calls through the router using a service called UMA.

Fall From VOIP Heaven

I fulfilled my quest to get a data only plan on the Atrix by buying an AT&T mifi and just putting the SIM card in my atrix. This required creating a new APN for isp.cingular, and for about 4 months this worked great with a pure voip setup.
A few days ago something happened. My Atrix seems to be stuck on EDGE. It will no longer connect to HSPA in the same locations that it used to be H+ 24 hours a day.
The basics have been covered: power cycling, airplane mode cycling. No use. The SIM itself seems okay since I tried putting it back in the mifi unit, and it got 3G like normal. That also rules out a tower problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I feel like an ass now since I bought the mifi on contract.
You can call At&t and switch it to a voice plan with an hspa data plan so you can use your atrix.
Kind of admitting defeat though.

Perhaps try flashing a different radio on the atrix. It could be an Incompatibility issue ? Worth a shot I would say
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
So, I tried flashing different radios. No luck. After that I thought maybe some fresh ROMs might do it some good. No luck on Alien, and then I installed CM7 and noticed something interesting. The "Use only 2g networks" setting is stuck on. I turn it off, go back, and soon as I look again it's on. Is there something special you have to do to save it, or could this be pointing to an underlying problem?

Nothing special is needed to save it. It could be throttling by AT&T do to your imei being that of an Atrix vs a mifi.

The problem with the mifi is its terrible battery life. It only gets 4 hours in hotspot mode. If it could last as long as my phone, I wouldn't even mind carrying around two devices, but it doesn't.
Anyway, great news. After listening to everyone's suggestions I took the SIM out of my phone and noticed that I was then able to properly disable "Use only 2G networks". So, I ordered a new AT&T SIM online, called and had it activated, and now 3G and H are working properly again. And along the way I fell in love with CyanogenMod.
I expect I'll probably have to repeat this process every few months if they continue to slap down my SIM cards, but I consider it worth it for not having to pay for a voice/text plan. I am still on contract, but to anyone who is considering doing something like me, T-mobile recently started offering a $30 a month plan that gets you 5 GB of data, 100 minutes, and unlimited text, and it's for phones! The only hitch is that it's a month by month thing (no contract) and it's promotional, so who knows when they'll decide to cut it. But personally, I'm hoping it's a sign that carriers are finally moving in the right direction.

I setup a google voice enabled PBX with pbxes.org, back when they let you make them for free. I know for a while they stopped doing that; not sure what the current policy is.
Basically the pbx pretends to be a google talk client, so when someone calls my google voice number it goes to the pbx. Then I have an extension on the pbx that I register on my phone with the native android SIP client, which on CM7 works like a dream. Seriously far smoother and more reliable than sipdroid or csipsimple.
Oh and this does work for outgoing too, but if you're using a solution that doesn't (like google voice -> sipgate/ipkall -> pbxes.org), you can get around it with an app called Google Voice Callback. And it's still all free.

In 2.3 they added SIP calling to the android OS. It's not an app. Of course, in stock android it only works on wifi. Cyanogen unlocks its true potential by letting you use it on cellular too.
In my experience, on stock ROM SIP is an epic fail, both native and via apps (tried acrobits, sipdroid, csipsimple, sipagent). There is something funny about moto's audio routing stack, its not a network or settings issue.
Same settings and SIP providers - yes I tried two lol - , same apps, same network i.e. home Wifi, 100% perfect with nexus one. So I'm sure its Atrix specific. This happened on both stock 2.2 and 2.3 AT&T.
Custom ROM fixes this, CM7 native SIP works perfectly.
Can't remember for other ROMs, but they seemed to get apps working if not native SIP.
YMMV

[Q] No Internet Sharing after traveling

So, I have a Verizon Wireless Trophy. I was thrilled to finally be able to use Internet Sharing, and I had it working fine. Then I travelled internationally and was using my Trophy on another carrier with a local SIM card. After returning home, I am no longer able to use Internet Sharing. As soon as I try to enable it, I get this error: Connection not shared - There's no cellular data connection to share right now. Check your cellular settings and signal, and try again. Yet my data connection is working fine. My guess is that the Connection Setup app messed something up?
I did contact HTC support, they basically said that they are aware of the issue but have no further information to give me.
Anyone else experience this? Any workarounds?
Many thanks,
I. Kinal

Are you using it on Verizon Wireless? If so, you need to have an official Internet Sharing package, or read my first post in my custom rom for instructions on bypassing it. This works even with the official SparkW (VZW) Trophy rom.
I'm assuming you are using the stock rom.
Yes, I am on Verizon with a Share Everything plan - like I said, everything was working fine before I left the US.

Yeah, just try the PST modification. It's easy to do and it should make wifi hot spot work, assuming you have a data connection. I too, used to be able to use tethering with or without the dun mod, but since Verizon added the internet sharing package to their website, I must do the bypass.
Unfortunately, that did not work - had no effect.
I should add that that trick is how I got Internet Sharing working in the first place, despite the fact that I have a Share Everything plan.

Are you running Tango update (OS Version 8773)? If you used interop unlock to enable it in Mango v1, then the newest driver changes the method in which it works (I doubt you used interop unlock to enable it at all).
Do you have any data access on the phone at all? Can you load websites? If you can't, you need to open up Connection Setup and re-select Verizon Wireless even if you've already done it once, and that should reset the data connection (conversely, if you have data and select it, data will disappear).
Yes, my OS Version is 8773.
This phone has never been interop unlocked.
Data works just fine.

I beleive that the rom has to have wifi calling in it for it to work. Also you have to have tmo for wifi to work. Att and Verizon are working on getting wifi calling as well but will not be rolled out till next year. I could be wrong. But this is what i read up to now. If any one else knows please correct me.
There are some ROMs that have wifi and volte working (XtreStoLite). Most of them don't the last time I checked as they were based off the international version.
On CM you'll lose Wi-Fi calling. It's a feature on T-Mobile roms and is a proprietary app.
