Having launcher lag or redraw after exiting app? (fix inside, works in any launcher) - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

just put this line at the bottom of build.prop file (under /system/)
Code:
#force launcher into memory
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
reboot -> profit
the redraw/lag basically caused by Android auto kill program to free memory, when memory is low android kills the idle tasks/apps.
This line basically just force your launch in memory, prevent the auto kill process accidently killed the launcher hence the launcher don't need to redraw/reload after you exit some memory hog apps.
enjoy this simple fix
If you experiencing anything you don't like after this fix/tweak, you can always delete this line and reboot to revert back the original state.

I just posted today about this issue. God it bugs me. I'm not rooted, so I can't do this. But I really don't think I SHOULD need to do this with 1 gig of ram! The funny thing is that this has ONLY happened on LB1, I didn't have this on ANY Of the other ROMs I've used. Strange.

maybe you consider rooting ? Zerg root don't increase count nor yellow triangle and easily undone.
roots really open up the possibility in Android but it's personal preference tho, so it's all up to you
Note has 1GB ram but only has 800 something after OS and stuffs and usually left 300-400MB free ram after cold boot.
if you have A LOT of apps installed and running in background. really doesn't surprise me left 1xx MB of free ram after few hours of use.
I didn't have any launcher redraw before ICS leak + nova launcher too but it does have now ,so needed the solution

I use GoLauncher and there is a setting that allows the launcher to stay in memory called "System Persistent". I believe ADWLauncher and LauncherPro also have a similar setting. It sounds like your tweak would not be necessary for these launchers.

After I edit this and reboot, the build.proc seems to be reverted to the original file. Does anyone know why it's doing that?
I have CF-root with AbyssNote 4.2 kernel if this matters.

Yes, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to edit it in the beginning. I also double checked that it's been saved by reopening it. But somehow it gets reverted back when I reboot.

Wow!!!
This worked for me on both Adw and Go Launcher.
After adding the script, no more lag or redraw with the launchers.
Thanks.

i have same pb in ics rom with lpY samsung note ics stock root.
i modifie my build and i have same pb grrr
have you other solution ?

Same problem here, fix didn't work sigh..I have posted in apex thread and emailed dev for advice. Any other help would be appreciated! (only happens with APEX and no other launcher)

I have been having serious lag in Apex when screen rotates..seems worse lately and it looks like im gonna have to find another launcher

I have just tried FTL Launcher, it is extremely fast !

I had the same slowdowns when I was using an app (like Gtalk for instance) and then used the home button to return to the desktop. I fiddled around and also "Keep in Memory" option of Apex and although it seemed to work, the problem came back.
In the end I decided to freeze the TwLaucher and I never had the problem again. Octavian90 tried this but so far didn't help
So no clue on what is buggin' Apex

worth considering as a replacement if only it was possible to use 7 icons in the dock (I know, I only have been using it since Apex, but I love it! It will be hard to go back to 5, just as it would be hard to go back to a phone with <5.3" screen )

Weird thing is, Apex launcher is keep itself in memory just ok, but widgets seems to be reloading and redrawing every time i exit from other full screen aps.
Is there a way to fix it?

After applying this..i got soft brick.. Can't boot. And someone said its because of Wrong permissions on the file.
Reflashed my gb Rom on pc odIn and Redo all my rooting procedure.

I know this thread is old, but this might help others who, like me, have come to it late.
I had the same problem – rebooted and the line wasn’t there. Fix it by installing Build Prop Tweaker (I have Pro, but should be OK with Lite), get to the prop tweaks (icon, bottom right) and scroll to Launcher Tweak, open and click ‘Add’
Seeder and Optimus for Root are pretty useful apps for this issue.
Cheers to Darkinners

LauncherPro problems

I was on LauncherPro when I was running Darky Extreme Edition V9.5 and have a lot of problem with crash and hang. I thought it was the problem with Darky Extreme Edition V9.5. A few days ago I upgrade to Juwe's Smart Edition base on GB and install launcherpro and have the same problem. It crash and rebooted once, and I have message from Launcherpro everytime I reboot my SGS telling me that LauncherPro has crash and I have weird problem like widgets not starting.
I am on Darky Extreme Edition V10.1 and decided not to use LauncherPro and try out Go Launcher and so far i haven't have any hang or crash anymore.
Anyone having problem with LauncherPro crashing and hang? Might want to try out other launcher.
I´ve used all the roms that you mention plus a lot more, and never had a single problem with LP.
Same here. Latest LP hangs on my XWJVH. With TW I have no problems at all.
I have used LP forever but now it hangs.

First of all, are you using legal / free, market copy of launcher pro?
Did you try to clear data in LP?
Is this is the only launcher you have?
What widgets do you have on your screen?
For me it's just a corrupted data problem. Fresh install (with no data / no backup restore) should solve the problem.
Absolutely. Go Launcher EX includes all the features you're used to from LP and ADW plus a bit more. Also it's free and really smooth. I don't regret the swith to Go EX, although I paid for LP and ADW EX. The only thing that was missing is LPs Bookmarks Widget but I installed Colorize Widget instead.
LP has given me problems for months now. Fresh flash, fresh install, clear data and cache. I've had problems with the dev quite alot on multiple issues. Zeam and Go are what I switch between now. No problems, just miss lp's widgets.
I find it hard to believe, that we all have the same phones, same copy's of app, and yet not for all of us it works. Well, maybe not that hard to believe, but after fresh flash mentioned above? Srsly?

This is my first android phone. I didn't know there was a lag with efs until I switched to ext4. Example of noob naivity
I've had the same problems with LauncherPro, however in my case they were surely caused by some of my "optimization"-attempts.
This weekend I decided to play around with my system again (Tweaky ROM 4.1), thereby surely reverting some of the changes I have made before and voila! No more lags.
Unfortunately I no longer recall what exactly I have changed (mostly I did app-housekeeping), however the bottom line is that the the lag is gone without flashing a new ROM.
been using LP with darky's 10.1 for like 3 days and no probs so far....
will keep you guys posted if something comes up
Possible solution
Hi guys, I think I found the solution (for me). I had the same problem, after restard, force close and I had to wait for like a minute for Launcher Pro to respond. I have TitaniumBackup Pro so I used the "make system app" for the LauncherPro and uninstalled the included in the rom one. So it worked. You could give it a try, because for me clearing cache and other propositions didn't work
There is somewhere an fix for that. I could not find it anymore.

System Killing Launcher on every app launch!!

Hi!! I have a problem, I'm currently Running Darky's 10.1 with dark core 2.6... Everything is smooth and snappy, however the system keeps killing my launcher everytime I launch an application whether it be a game, browser, news app... Whenever I exit the app the launcher reloads and it makes the phone really really slow and laggy for 10-15 seconds...
I currently using ZEAM launcher, not sure whats causing this, i've been using this launcher since its launch and only had this problem when i was on stock froyo...
Any ideas what can be done to fix this issue...
Thanks!!
Same problem here.
I am on GigerReal 7.1.3 and the worse thing is when it you try to make a phone call and the bloody thing just restarts the phone every third key pressed.
I can only call using voice calling when this happens...
I am using LauncherPro but it also happens in Ginger Launcher and TW Launcher 4.5
Just out of interest guys, how much free memory is showing for you in Settings > Applications > Running Services ?
I am running stock JVQ and although the phone works fine after initial boot (with around 180mb free) this number seems to drop over time and results in any new application clearing any other app from the memory. This even meant that if I got a text message while using the web browser and replied to it, by the time I went to return to the browser it had to reload where I was from scratch. It was also clear that after playing a game and returning to the home screen, even this was having to reload and "redraw" again.
That in itself is a minor annoyance but eventually it seemed to get so bogged down the whole system froze with the "black screen of death" and I had to do a forced reboot. I'm aware, of course, that JVQ is not an official release so it's not fair to be too harsh on Samsung here...
I seem to have a lot of memory free. It happens after the phone has been up for some time.
I noticed that launcher pro was reloading the widgets every time it starts. Also i seem to notice that it happens when you dial a couple of numbers and it starts giving you suggestions from the contacts. So it could be contact related?

This is the same that happens on my system... The launcher just reloads all the widgets everytime I close an application... the amount of ram is always close to 243/337.. So its close to 90-100 mb free, which is enough i suppose... Still the launcher just reloads everytime an app is closed... Its really getting annoying...
basicly you must set HOME_APP_ADJ to 0 making home app unkillable =)
am not sure but probably do that
/data/local.prop -> add such line ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
and restart - have not tested just pure theory (the .prop location)

Actually, putting the value as 1 worked better for me. My launcher so far has not been killed even once.
ya 1 should work flawlesly
0 is making it bulletproof/unkillable at any state
but 1 should be safest value
I think Spare Parts allows you to adjust the task killer's sensitivity. Maybe have a play with that and relax the settings.

Attached is an APK which adds that line. Make sure you're rooted first. I wrote it in the past 10 minutes, so it's very simple and might crash, but it did work for me.
Just install it, launch it, confirm root and then watch out for a small message. If successful it will directly ask you to uninstall it. Reboot, and done.
there is also ro.HOME_APP_MEM that can be changed to 4096
to follow other oom_adj=1 settings =)

Try changing the lowmemoty killer setting to something less aggressive. Your phone is trying to keep too much free memory so has to kill off apps.
Download Galaxy Tuner (using memory manaber option)and set the application cache values to the new samsung default as follows:-
fa=10 MB
va=16 MB
ss=20 MB
ha=24 MB
cp=28 MB
ea=32 MB
Make a note of your current settings in case it doesnt help.
You can also use Galaxy Tuner to set JEWE's file system cache
, settings are:-
SWP: 50
VCP: 10
DEC: 5
DWC: 10
DRA: 90
DBR: 5
These work well for me so give them a whirl, you can always put the values back to where they are now.
mate the problem is solved already - please read dont spam those juwe crappy values ok ?

ICS 4.03 - AppDrawer lag

Hi,
is anyone els having lags opening the ICS apprawer?
is there any chance to resolve this "problem"?
ICS realy feals smooth, except starting the appdrawer...
Yup - It's the only lag I experience, nothing I've tried has an effect including forcing 2D acceleration, limiting background processes, changing animation and transition timings and not keeping activities.
For me it's a slight stutter rather than lag, the app draw itself would load much better if the launch animation was turned off. I believe it's related to a bottleneck in the systems memory bus.
Yep! I've experienced lag on the App Drawer with every ROM I've tried for my NS4G. I'm starting to wonder if the NS can handle ICS properly.
Agreed. Its one of those things that really puts me off and i would REALLY want a fix for this
I had really bad lag on my i9023 until I did a factory reset, after that it's a different phone. Know of quite a few others that found the same so may be worth a try (if you haven't already that is)
Not many responses to this thread, but I can honestly say that I do not experience any app drawer lag at all. i9020T 4.0.3 stock/rooted.
i got too... with stock and alternative launcher, really annoying thing.. had a fade to black effect even when i close an app...
and I know is off topic... but why my phone has rotation disbled??? all check are flagged!! why why and why!!!
edit 2: rotation issue solved just rebooting.. how noob!!!
I definitely get the stutter.
I even went as far as giving the launcher process higher priority but it made no difference.
Specifically I tried
renice -15 `pgrep com.android.launcher`
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I'm pretty sure it has to do with loading the widgets as they are connected to the apps in the new drawer. Cm9 has an option that disables the connection between the apps and widgets, solves 99% of the problem. Glad this thread was made as I was getting crucified by delusional members over this issue. Blind allegiance ftw I guess

Yes, CM9 launcher fixes the issue for me too as long as you tick to have widgets separated from main apps.

I did try factory reset, and after that ive done some testing, launcher still lag...no change...maybe at the begging i thought its better, but when you run for example browser than exit from it and press menu it lags again...
so i believe for people that have lag in launcher (like me) factory reset is not solution...
we will have to wait for community fix or google fix ...

I have the exact same issue. The closest I have gotten to getting rid of it is what I have now.
Peter Alfonso December 20 nightly with glad os 2.2 with lazy governor. Its almost completely gone.
And I completely wipe everything and restore manually EVERY TIME I install a new ROM .
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I also do experience a small lag when I launch it the first time, but that doesn't bother me too much, to be honest. I'm having more of a lag when I want to return to the app drawer from an application, it takes a two or three to close it.

Problem with Galaxy Note - Lag

I've recently bought an international galaxy note and I love it so far, except for the fact of the high ram usage. This was not a problem on my previous Samsung device, the Galaxy S2. Typically after pressing the "Clear Memory" key I get around 360 MB/800MB of RAM being used. However, as I open a few APPS, such as Facebook, double twist and internet browser it spikes up to around ~ 760 MB and my device gets EXTREMELY laggy. 3 open APPS shouldn't be a problem right? Even after I press the back button (not home) the device is still lagging. Is there a reason for this?
I am currently on:
Android 2.3.6
Baseband N7000XXLA4

Suspending an app in RAM does not cause the device to lag. What causes ANY device to lag is when the app is running FULL throttle in the background.
Check to see which app is still running constantly in the background that's using most of the CPU power.

Setting > Running Applications. I have a lot of my recently opened apps "cached background process"
I let the OS handle to open apps, since if you close them, they open again if needed by the system. However, apps such as games I ensure I quit when I'm done.
Sometimes when the lag is excessive, I need to do a reboot and then the SGN works speedily again. I found after uninstalling an app called Swift Keyboard, the lag minimized. Shame, as it's a super keyboard replacement.

Lag problem in system application
Hi, I am enjoying my Galaxy Note but I am facing lagging/jerking scrolling problem in Message, Contact and other system application but no problem with Internet or any third party application.
My Kernel is : 2.6.35.7 - N7000DDLB2.....after update (dont know what was original)
please suggest how to solve it.
There are lots of posts relating to laggy Notes.
Short of rooting the device, there is no solution other than to carefully check what you've installed on the phone, when you've exhausted that avenue then all you can do is to sit back, join the queue and wait for the ICS update...

It even had lag at the store : (
Hey y'all!
I just recently returned a HTC One X cuz i wasn't feelin' the ICS vibe, i NEED a Menu Button and thats THAT!
So here i'm thinking 'bout gettin' the GNote, cuz its STILL on Gbread (my fav Android Op System out of all of 'em to date) but then all i read is how bad the lag is (which as mentioned in title was evident even at the store) but can be fixed by rooting & flashing ICS ROM.
Soooooooo, IF i root (omg i hope its a lot easier than it used to be no tar, pit, odin files... is it? wait, don't tell me! i don't wanna know, YET...lol) will my GNote Menu Button still bring up a Menu or does it become useless in an ICS ROM?
Also, if i don't root and wait for Official ICS update, will Menu Button still be functional? I thought i read on 4 button phones u still can use the M Button, but now i can't find the article...
thanx y'all!!!

Video pretty much shows the problem. It doesn't seem noticeable but the delay is starting to bother me; especially when i'm multi tasking. I'm not rooted and using stock rom with Nova Launcher.
I deleted the many folders that were on my screen, tried all app animation speeds (from 'relaxed' to 'quick') and still get the same result. Weird thing is, this even happens when I tried the stock launcher.
never noticed it until now, or was it always there?

This happens sometimes in Kitkat when you have more than 1 launcher installed (Including the stock one). You need to uninstall the ones you don't use, maybe rooting and using Titanium Backup in case you want to uninstall the Stock Launcher (Make sure to make a recovery backup and a Stock Launcher backup in case you uninstall it).
Yes, i know, this should not happen, but it does... Btw if you disable or uninstall the stock launcher, you will lose the Guest Mode, since it's part of it.
I hope i helped, Durocks.
I can't seem to solve this issue myself. Tried several roms without luck.
