Thank you for the what??? - EVO Shift 4G General

OK so at the recommendation of one of the members I flashed U.K.E. Rom on to my phone. Kinda liking it but I got the oddest text this morning.
谢谢你的电话插孔一天。
Google translate says it's simplified Chinese and means "Thank you for the phone Jack"...
Is this a fluke or should I be worried?

Maybe it was built in to send to you when you flashed only One_love could be able to explain it cuz i got the same message when i ran U.K.E

Is your name Jack? Does the text show the number it was sent from? Where did you download your rom from (ROM Manager, SDX website, etc)? Do you have any apps that didn't come from the market?

I got the Rom from the sdx forum and I haven't installed anything that wasn't from the market. I do have the phone number and it's from a local number, that's what freaks me out the most. If this wasn't a fluke then anyone with this knowledge can get my info let alone could they call out of country on my account and all that stuff...

Wow very random if i must say. I have yet seen or heard of this. Im wondering if you have a rogue app messing with you two. Lets see if we can figure this out, what apps do the both of you have the same of? Ive yet to see this message to me or hear of it from others. And i can tell you that there is nothing written into this rom to send you that message. This is why im thinking its a rogue app. If we could get a list of the apps you both have that received this random message.

Sounds good. BTW, I called Sprint just to double check to see if they show any calls placed through my phone number or anything. The lady on the phone said it's possible but if someone did it wont post to my account for a few days, especially if they made any international calls.
I didn't figure there was anything scripted into the rom itself to do this, it's possible that it could be something rogue. It's also possible that someone with the skillz was just driving by and grabed my info from a wifi signal and texted me just to F with me.

Wow that is odd as hell. I've been running and testing uke since before it was released and I've never had that pop up on me. Its def not something in the rom and I hope you guys find the app doing it. Good luck.

I think this is what's making me think it's just a fluke or a troll... I've been running these apps for a while now and haven't ever had a problem with them. I didn't even expect a comment from One_Love_420 either. VICODAN is the one that recommended the ROM to me so I wasn't going to just point the finger to the ROM anyways. I did have my Wifi running all night long (had the advanced setting setup to not put my wifi to sleep when my phone goes off). The only thing I haven't done yet is check to see what my logs say on my Linksys router (maybe he tapped my phone for internet).
I think it's just a fluke (or at least I hope... this could be an exspensive bill if this person was able to make calls from my phone or anything like that).

yeah its def an oddity. have you ran miui on it anytime recently and maybe there was residual mess from it and someone was still able to mess with you? or hell, coulda been someone texting the wrong person, i would think its just a fluke if youve been using the same apps for x amount of time and havent had this happen before.

One thing does come to mind when looking at your app list. Go sms pro is a china developed app and has a ton of permissions that i would never approve of, one being the ability to make calls. Check its permissons list on the market. A little much for an app imho.

I haven't tried Miui yet. I started with CM7 and wanted to get into somthing light (meaning less sprint stuff and being able to uninstall maps and stuff since I only use them once in a great while). I know I got a lot of GO stuff on it but I've just been tinkering with it since the kernal is running a bit more then just the 800 mhz on the cpu. Wanted to "test" out what this thing is capable of.
The bling is nice, the personalization of colors and stuff is cool and all... But I use this for business a lot and kinda like a rock solid machine that's as efficient as possible. I'm looking into other options of roms that are just plane Jane Android next. U.K.E. has been running nicely even with all the bling (minus go sms now I guess). Depending on how put off I am about no bling I might just go back to using U.K.E.

You should always check permissions of apps even from the market..Google doesn't keep track of apps published on the market and if they are malicious or not. It's up to users to report if something funky is happening. That's why I un-installed GoSms a long time ago when they first added all of those strange permissions to the updated versions. It was even causing people to have issues with phone calls. Read through market comments and check permissions Always with any app even if it's just a update to a new version. The devs of GoSms are very un-responsive also when people ask them about the permissions and report issues. If you really want to get down to the bottom of something also run a logcat and see what the app is doing.

Because it's based on cm7?

Solid indeed. Outside of that odd text I haven't had any other issues. I haven't tried to track down who's phone number that is Incas it's a friend just messing with me and I haven't had any charges posted to my account so... Might have just been someone messing with me.

It's definately not a rom related issue. Download Addons Detector from the market. This will help you to track down suspicious apps intalled on your device.

So I got rid of all of the GO products and I'm just running the AWD stuff that came with the rom. Only thing I realy miss is the SMS stuff. I looked at handsent and their permissions are the same (for the most part) as go sms.
Any thoughts on an sms program? I'm looking for character count and more info like sent date/time displayed without going into message details.

You guys don't know the secret behind poking, huh? I used to do some facebook hacking before they cracked down on it. The thing is, when you poke someone, you have acess to a temporary page that displays information that would usually be private, including features. It's a stalker feature in fb for sure, but try it out. It's a great thing to do when you don't want to send a friend request but still want to stalk the person..\

and I'm happy to report that... FINALLY!.. I don't have partial wake lock with this update.. jesus, took them long enough.
.1 didn't work for me, even after uninstalling facebook and completely reinstalling. .2 fixed it, but only after a full install again.
This new update broke notifications (takes you to the website, again), which had been fixed in the last update.
How to you completely uninstall the Facebook application. I only have the option to "uninstall updates", I can't uninstall the app (not from the market front, or the Applications -> Manage -> Facebook). I am not rooted and have never seen this before. And yes, I am not trying to remove the Facebook for HTC Sense, I am trying to remove the katana one. 1.3.2 is still in my running services even though I have all notifications turned off and refresh turned off. 1.2 never showed up in the running services location.
ohhhhh the new update broke notifications? so how do i get the new update and which facebook is this, htc sense or regular
So they update the app so the last 6 people with 1.5 can install the app, and it breaks notifications for all of us.

Is anyone still having issues with the awake time bug. 1.3.2 is causing my phone to stay awake
My notifications, even on the last update, have always always always taken me to the website.
I had been running the last version without the partial wake bug (1.2.9? 1.3.0? I forget) and upgraded to this today. Immediately went back to constant partial wake time. I just uninstalled the entire app for now but are you saying that a complete uninstall then reinstall of the new version will get rid of this issue? I don't really care too much because the regular site works just fine. I just figure I will use the application if it's not raping my battery in exchange for saving me 2 seconds of opening a bookmark.

[Q] Security for Android

OK, I did search for this before I posted so I hope I don't get anybody mad for starting a new thread if this has been covered.
Regarding security threats and android phones. I did see the thread about a malware program out of Russia affecting android phones (installed via a movie program?). But in general, security issues do not seem to be a big issue.
The other threads I've found seem to have conflicting opinions.
So my question(s) is, how much do you all worry about security issues? Does anybody use Lookout (free mobile security app)? I did see that it has high ratings on the market, but I put more stock in what this community has for opinions than the market users.
Again, if this has been covered to death and I missed it, I apologize.
I do have concerns over security and therefore really don't install many apps. Since I have had an android phone, my gmail account has been compromised once, allowing spam to be sent from my gmail account and also spam to be placed on my Blogger site. While I cannot be certain it was something on my phone that allowed this, I rarely use my computer to access any of my Google apps. I also had never had issues with any email or other accounts being compromised for as long as I've had a computer. I also rarely get spam. So while I can't be certain, the fact it showed my account being logged into by a mobile device in Malaysia makes me very suspicious.

Thanks for the reply. I take it you haven't used Lookout or any of the other security apps?
Lookout looks legit, but I am a little skeptical. Guess I'll wait and see if I get any other responses before I do anything with it.
I haven't tried it in the past, as I'm skeptical too. I went ahead and installed it though after my post just to see. It is now being installed by some of the carriers by default apparently and I guess has won some awards, so hopefully it's been poked at a bit by people to where it itself isn't a large threat. Figure if it doesn't impact performance a lot there can't be any harm in trying it. Now, as for how effective it really is, I'd imagine that's something many people will never know.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Again, thanks for your input.
Performance impact is basically what I was worried about. I actually installed it the other day but when I realized it was on ALL the time, I uninstalled it before really giving it a chance.
I guess it's worth a shot. I'll install it again tonight and run a couple before and after quadrant benchmarks to see how much of an impact.
If I don't get anybody else posting here, I'll still post my experience in a couple/few days, so if you're interested, check back later in the week.
Thanks dpeeps, have a good one.

you are welcome. i use it mostly for the lost feature. if i lose it i can activate the gps and locate it that way, and i can also make it scream (caution this is really loud, and the only way to stop it is a battery pull) if it is somewhere close to me. it is very effective.
EDIT: they changed the scream feature, now it will scream for 1 minute and you can stop it by turning the volume down on the phone.

Ummm does this worry anyone else?

I've been up late tonight, and just so happened to stumble across this article over at AndroidPolice. Figured it might interest some people here since it includes our phone.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...e-numbers-gps-sms-emails-addresses-much-more/
Here's the thing, though. They recommend uninstalling the offending apk immediately, which I tried.....Unfortunately that gives me repeated force closes over and over and over while the system tries to run it, to the point where I had to restore to a backup. So what do we do about this?
UPDATE: You can remove HTCloggers.apk...all you have to do is restart afterwards.

Yes and no.
Yes because so many users run Sense.
No because I run AOSP.
Frankly, I wonder how many other serious flaws there are.
I can name several apps that want their hands on permissions they have no business in [Facebook for one]

Many devs remove these programs and such to remove ciq. I can't find the thread right now, but it reads just about everything. It's so deeply imbedded into the framework.
It reads every button you press on your keyboard.
Every text you send and receive.
Every app you use and download.
The pages you browse on using the internet browser.
It even goes as far to read any spot on your screen that you touch.
This is spyware to the extreme. Sprint and HTC will say its not "spyware" and say its used only for marketing to determine how phones are being used to further develop for the current trends in smartphones. It's very possible they could steal personal info with this. Is it currently happening? Uhh...probably not, but there will still be a lot of paranoia about it.

Some of us haven't forgotten the XCP rootkit that was on some Sony BMG titles in 2005... hope HTC doesnt suffer a similar demise like Sony eventually has of late.
This has been removed from MikG.
This is exactly why I'm AOSP. (that and sub-100MB ROM files)
I read the article too- (I have an Androidpolice/Android Central) feed in my Pulse reader....
I already knew CIQ and such were slimy embedded spyware...but the Treve app- spotted stuff I hadnt deleted already... Sprint sent me a "letter" about bandwidth usage and We-KNOW-what-Your-Doing" ----
I'm not amused by HTC/Sprint's collusion... leaving our bottoms out there in the cold for anyone to do whatever with.....
I bet even money my phones been cloned... sometimes I can't use it for calls .. recently -and I'd not had a single missed call or problem in a year.
I'm not a happy camper.. worried about my credit card #'s and really really am annoyed by HTC sliming us this way...
to the tune- that it'll be an icey cold day in hell before I'd consider buying another HTC phone for anyone in my family- (my family has 3 Evo 4g)...
We are not amused.....

it appears to me that this file has already been removed from MikFroyo. At least, I can't find it...
BTW, you can just remove it using TIbackup, but you'll have to restart to get rid of the repeated force closes. Simple fix, and I've done the same for CarrierIQ as well.
It was removed from sprint lovers rom as well... I couldnt find it at least
I removed HtcLoggers.apk from mine and after rebooting (force close loop) it seems to be working fine. However, is there an old log file still on the phone that can be read by some Spyware app that needs to be removed or does all this data need to come from the logger app itself? If there still is a log, I'm sure it has enough info to still steal my ESN and other stuff.
Wow! Glad I run custom ROMS

[Q] General thoughts, experience and concerns on Froyo 2.2.2

To start this off, I want to say that this is an awesome community full of great people willing to help others. It takes this sort of open source sharing to come together for the greater good. That is why I want to make a thread to document my experiences so that it may help others and myself.
As of yesterday, I started using froyo 2.2.2 by joshkoss. This update is probably the best of all of them and I like it much better than 2.2.1, which is what I previously had installed. Having said that, there are still some problems, which I almost find enjoyable to discover how to fix.
Throughout most of my updates, my GPS has been slow to connect. Finally on 2.2.2 it is impossible to establish a connection and everytime I turn on GPS it always asks me to 'Accept' or 'Cancel' the agreement. I've never had this happen before. Anyone know what to do about that?
Beyond this issue, I wanted to try this fix by ciscogee. I have gotten all the way to the point on ADB tools that in my cmd prompt I can type 'adb devices' to show me my devices serial number. For me, it ends there. As soon as I can figure out how to do this fix step by step for a beginner I will type it out in this thread. I am using Android SDK.
Another problem with this 2.2.2 update is that my banking app no longer works and it force closes right after start up. Then when I try to send a report, that also force closes. It worked on 2.2.1 so Im sure it has something to do with it.
So as of right now this is where I'm at. I hope I can help some people out with their Continuum. I just dont have the detailed knowledge of the inner workings to really bring something to the table, but I hope to at least help someone else out and learn something in the process.
My Wells Fargo app quit working when I switched over to EC07 and I haven't been able to pinpoint what the problem is. I posted my problems in another thread, but basically I had several apps that were FCing when I tried to use them. I did logcat on them, and based on the errors I got from there, I think is has something to do with the apps trying to access data either over 3G or wifi.
Never got any further than that though.
That's weird. Did you have problems reporting the failure? Ill have to try out that log app and see what I can find out. Hopefully ill have something later today.
Anyone else have problems with a banking app? Mine is comerica bank.

I tried the hacked browser and it didn't change anything on my phone. Both the stock browser and TB's hacked one FC as soon I tried load a page.
One thing I did notice though, was that the browser would let me surf the web just fine. It was when I tried to log into any account; Wells Fargo, Google, etc.,that it would FC. Don't know if that means anything or not. Wonder if it is the same reason some banking apps aren't working. Could it have something to do with using secure connections?
Just a thought.

You're absolutely right! You really can't mess up this phone either.

I get what you're saying about the force close on secure connections. Ive only had a force close on one bank app. Never online through the web browser such as dolphin.
Was the hacked browser an internet browser?
Yep, my Wells Fargo app doesn't work either.
Same fc issue... as with the Flixter and imapmyrun apps.
(Small vibrate... pause... blackscreen & 3 pulse vibrate fc.)
I'm running Miunia Beta 3 on ec07 radio with the Ciscogee .85 blue theme.

Yes exactly. My comerica does the same vibrating act.

Ahh just found another one with the buzzing act. The app called zillow. Makes me wonder if I should go back to my old rom...nahh ill stick out for an update...come on joshkoss!

Ok, after reading some old posts, I think I may have found a connection with the FC issues and certain apps. It seems that there were alot less FC problems when using the EC03 baseband vs. the EC06 baseband.
Does anyone know what the differences are between the two?
I've said it before, but; I don't know much about programming, language, kernals, etc. but I can see patterns. And what I have seen is that most of the apps with FC problems are trying to access network data, and alot of those seem to be secure connections (such as banking apps). Someone said before that it is hard to know what the real problem is because everyone uses different apps, but I have seen the same apps listed as causing problems with several different users here over and over again. So that makes me think that there is an underlying problem causing these issues.
Like I said, I don't know much, but this seems like the problem to me, and if these clues make something, somewhere, inside someone's brain click that actually does know something about this, then maybe I helped a little bit.

If that's the case, it sounds like a problem with ssl. I wonder if a fascinate baseband would fix it. Trailblazer proved that a fascinate baseband would work on our phones a few months ago

Remote Wipe Stolen a500

Hey guys and gals,
Tonight my a500 was stolen. I work in sales and use it to look things on the net for customers (like price comparisons, etc) and use it for the website and lots of other business-type things (as well as lots of personal pics etc).
But, unfortunately when my back was turned, someone swiped it...!!!! argh:angry:
I had the newest release of jellybean on it from the forums here on xda, but had no remote wipe app installed (never even crossed my mind to do it). Therefore, I'm wondering if the is any remote wipe abilities in jellybean or if there was an app by chance that i had installed that would have this feature hidden (like onavo or norton utilities... reading now).
If anyone can help that would be amazing! Changed all my passwords, etc. So, I should be fine there. thanks guys

Sorry mate. Not a lot you can do about it at this time.
Just cherish the thought of what's going to happen when he decides jb is too buggy, and tries to install a different rom.
I suppose a new user will be posting all kinds of questions here at xda in the near future!
Still sorry to hear it got pinched. I know the feeling.

Well, I don't have a lot of faith in those types of apps. They usually only work if an idiot steals it. Over here, pinching phones and tabs is big business, and usually done by pro's. They're quick to dump the device to another agent, who runs a stock full rom on it, clones the IMEI number from a good device , then dumps it to one of the umpteen million fly by night resellers. They (moscow govt) talked about cracking down on multiple PH number/IMEI combinations, then quickly realized over half the devices in Russia would stop working! Including their own!
Best thing to do, never let it out of your sight. Get a new device, like I did my phone, and the pain goes away.
But then again, maybe your culprit is a true idiot, and will post fotos to your facebook account!!!!!

Did you try that Plan B yet or is that just over advertised junk?

The last person to steal one of my phones was a true idiot. This happened at my school and good thing I'm done with school. I was in class and had my phone charging and I had it out because I trusted most everyone in the room and would known who would have taken it.
So he asked if it was my phone and about a minute later he leaves the room. I noticed it was gone and others around me saw him take it. (Not obvious at all)
So I had the Vipre Mobile Security beta installed so I immediately logged into the web interface to activate GPS tracking and set off the alarm. Except when I logged in the service hadn't communicated when the app/phone in over a month so it was useless.
Over the period of the next 24 hours he had used the phone to take photos, delete everything on my sdcard, spam my YouTube feed with countless videos, and make voice calls to their own friends and family. So I looked on my carrier's account management and found all these numbers. Between the school staff and police it was possible to track the calls back to his identity. I got my phone back the next day...without the case and screen protector, sucks that they kept that.
So the lesson is make sure you have good, working anti theft solutions with cascading failsafes.
The next app I installed after ditching Vipre was Avast. This was a good solution with some flaws. Avast was one of the first Play Store security apps to utilize root access. Because of root in addition to setting as a device administrator it was also installed as a system service and app. This made it persistent and harder to remove.
The issue with avast was since the app was in /system and not /data it would have to be completely reconfigured after flashing each nightly update. Sometimes I'd forget and then it wouldn't work. It claimed to support the CM backup script except it was designed for CM7 and CM9 uses a different type of backup.
The other issue with avast was there was no web interface. You could only send commands through SMS.
Since I got my Nexus I bought Cerberus anti theft its perfect. It has system app support. Instead of a user setup it apparently registers the device ID or SIM or something and loads the user account from the cloud server. So all I do is add the apk to the CM backup list and it auto configures when installed. I can use SMS control or the website. I can monitor and control pretty much the entire phone and it takes a front camera photo on invalid pass code.
I check weekly to ensure its still running and it hasn't failed once.
As a failsafe I also have the first screen splash modded to my contact info in case of loss. Its encrypted so if anything maybe only a boot loader update could remove it.

I think that only works if you accept all the tracking disclaimers to enable location history and not many people have history turned on.
I guess the lesson is you can't let your guard down for even a second. One time I let a friend sync their iPod touch on my computer since they didn't have a PC and they ended up snatching my classic monochrome iPod. I'm still upset to this day since they didn't take my old iPod touch instead. That just proves the first gen iPod touch is so bad people won't even steal it.

oh yea def' just thought for pot-luck ,
it is a pitty when you let someone come into your house as a friendly gesture only to find them stealing from you,... ive had my fair share and also a fair share of miss-understandings thereafter because of a newly aquired paranoia..... but i think its 100% justified.
If you download the lookout app and install it, if you ever lose your tablet, on the lookout website you can see where it is, (if GPS was enabled when lost) you can also do a remote wipe, and a remote siren, make it put off an alarm remotely.
Its a good app to have just in case, but doesn't help if the app was not installed before being lost or stolen.

yeah sound like the prey app too , i can also send a popup message to the tab screen, be near the location displayed on the map and then activate a "S-SCARING" siren lol
also one good thing is prey uses the location services through wifi as well as gps, tells you the address of the current and last wifi hotspots logged into
so if it says currently "wii hotspot mcdonalds fast food , thief street. lol go to the mcdonalds and set off the alarms,...clearly see your tablet...and a jackass who need a beating. :highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive:

hey man, great idea! no luck...
and thanks guys for al of the advice! still no luck with the tab i think the worst part of it is was that i was really getting to love it. like the development here, especially with jb!, is fantastic. and i was a kickstarter supporter for chameleon and now seeing the new updates really puts salt on the wound. lol. in the next month i'll need another tablet, so im debating on finding another 2nd hand one for the price of a nexus 7, or just getting the 7. only thing is though, is the size....
thanks again.
I'm assuming you've looked into "Plan B" on the Android market, right? It automatically installs from the market on your tablet, and broadcasts location immediately on install. Not sure how accurate or helpful it is, but if you haven't tried it yet... you probably should.
The other option is to put out some Wanted To Buy ads...
