[Q] Can't Get Kindle Fire to show as a storage device - Kindle Fire General

Hopefully no one has already asked this question. I've looked through the search and found nothing. But anyway, I have windows 7 64. When I try and connect the Kindle to windows it doesn't see it. Yes I've made sure it's not sleeping and yes I've Reset the Kindle. Now in the task bar it shows it to safely remove device. If I look at devices it's there. When I click on my computer it's not. At work they still use windows xp it works just fine there, Comes up as it should. I've tried all my usb ports . I've tried 4 different usb cables. Is there some usb drivers that I could delete in the windows system that could get it to work. Hell I can't even root this thing till it see it. Any help would be awesome.

Does the kindle say file sharing is on?
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using XDA App

I don't know if this will help but I had to uncheck USB debugging to get mine to show up. (Also on Windows 7)

Where do you find usb debugging. I Know where it's at on my phone. Also jm it does say on the Kindle itself that files are ready to be transferred.

As a last resort you could use device manager to check and make sure that windows is seeing it. Also, certain versions of windows will hide certain drives. Just right click my computer and click manage. Then click device manager.

Look under Applications and then Development. Default is ADB android debugging so I guess you have to turn that off to use USB.

Use kfu in the development thread to install the drivers again.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using XDA App

That's the weird thing. When I uninstall the drivers the computer will see the kindle. When I install the kfu drivers it doesn't see the kindle anymore

I just went through this make sure you have
Path c:\ windows\system32

Yeah I have C:\windows\system32.

so when you type "Path" in a cmd you see c:\windows\system32

if not refer to this

Ubuntu Driver?

I am a ubuntu n00b!
I cannt seem to find my phone when it is mounted with ubuntu.
I read in another thread how ubuntu doesnt need drivers.
If this is true, how do I copy files to / from my epic with ubuntu please?
Thanks

I am aware that it has to be mounted on the phone.
With the phone mounted no 16 gig drive shows up in places or under computer or any of file location I can find in ubuntu.
Just tried my girlfriends stock epic when she got home from work, and it works like it should. Get a pop up window. Mine does nothing.
Running:
D18
Noobnl 1.1.1 ROM
Noobnl 1.4.0 Kernel
Hers is stock. So the problem must be related to root or the rom or kernel.

Doesnt work.
Need to try a diffrent rom / kernel I guess, Dont want to I like these.
IF your using a PC try using USB ports which are located in the back of the computer, otherwise (laptops) try a different port with the Original cable you got with the phone.
Like already mentioned try to disable the USB debugging mode. Also from the command prompt try running lsusb command and see if the device is recognized. If the only thing your doing is syncing music and photos you won't need to do changes in your rules file like when you would want ADB to work.
Let us know if this worked.
PS. Also you may want to reboot your phone after disabling USB debugging mode, just for giggles.

Using a back USB port did the trick. Seen this posted before to get the drivers for this phone to work on windows 7. Since I never had to do this I never thought to try a back port.

ICS USB drivers?

Hello all,
I posted a thread yesterday about my issues trying to get my a500 running AOKP to connect to my computer. So, as it is right now, it's got nothing on it, except for a few apps.
I have narrowed it down to the possibility that it is NOT ROM-specific and that it has something to do with USB drivers. I installed the drivers from the Acer US and UK websites, along with the setup.exe drivers from TimmyDean's root folder. None of them worked.
I tried on two different computer, and got the same issues. All I hear is 3 quick beeps after the computer fails to install device driver software.
My question is this: To those of you who are on an ICS ROM/Leak, HOW do you access your SD Card/Internal Storage on your PC?
I really hope somebody could help, I'm pretty stumped.

I already have the SDK installed from a whole ago, and I have used ADB recently for my phone, so I guess I should have the updates drivers correct? So I should just go through the device manager and let Win7 search through my C:/ drive? What will it be picking up, the ADB drivers?

I had google android drivers, Acer drivers, probably 4 different sets. I believe the last I used, were HTC adb drivers. Got pretty frustrated as I couldn't connect 501 with adb. But After I did the full scan on c: drive, it finally picked them up.
It doesn't matter which drivers get used, as long as it works
"Throw enough bullets at the target, and eventually you will hit it"
have you tried going into device manager .Then plug in the Iconia tab once its recognized .Right lick on the device and install the drivers manually. You must know where the drives are extracted to on your computer to do this. Also Not with my acer tab but i have had a issue in the past with usb device drivers .They can sometimes be confused by windows and windows will load driver for the other device and of course fail. So to get around this you can try making sure your phone is connected to the usb port you always use. Then try to plug the iconia into another port. and see If windows will prompt you to install the device.
If still no luck do a search on microsoft tech site.If you can not find it this can also be done by uninstalling all usb devices on the computer in programs and features. Then go to device manager and manually uninstall the usb hubs and devices listed in there. Reboot the computer and windows will put them back.Re install the drives from acer for the iconia reboot. then connect it and see if it will then find the device.
The above is for tech savy users only due to if there is a registry issue the hubs might not install back .
Good luck. and again if you cant follow what i typed above Microsoft tech help has it in step by step instructions. just search for usb device driver install issues and narrow down your issue.
Thank you to BOTH of you! I was getting frustrated that I can't do anything with my tablet! I will definitely try both of these when I get home.
@Erica: I went into Device Manager and it did not recognize my tablet, so I tried to install drivers from Windows Update, and it didn't find any.
@Moscow: HTC USB drivers will work? Really? I don't see why not, but then again, each website has you go through different steps to get your model number, etc.
What I am wondering is, for the scan if the C:/ drive, do I extract only the .exe for the USB drivers?

Generally, the zip file contains driver files for AMD64 and i386. Just extract them to a location on your C: drive. Like C:\android\adb_drivers. Once you extract the driver files, or any other driver files, and you have windows search your computer, it will usually find them, and install them. Takes a couple minutes.
I find this is easier than trying to have windows look in a specific folder. Like I said, I have tons of driver files.
Also, google for Android USB drivers. Will give you the generic Android USB driver pack. Unzip them also, to a diff folder.

When you say it does not recognize your tablet. Are you saying that when you plug the tablet into the computer thru usb You do not get a prompt to install a Driver? If this is the case Windows thinks it has the proper driver. You will have to find the device in device manager . OPEN it and update driver. You can try to have windows to search . but i disagree with MD on this. But both ways tend to have the same results .TELL it where your drives are such as mine are in c:/android/androidsdk/ xxx
You could also try to install Acer sync from the acer iconia d/laod site If you do this i would change the install path to a sub folder of your sdk install. could be useful in future.

Basically, I hear the quick beeps and the device is not being recognized by Windows. Under device manager it is the only device that has a question mark or exclamation point for icon.

Quick update.
I tried both of your theories, and neither of them worked
I tried to find the ADB drivers, but couldn't get them to install through SDK Manager (file not found on an XML file).
So then, I took two of the drivers I had downloaded, and extracted the folders they were in, into a folder on C:\ called android drivers.
I tried searching my entire C:\ and nothing came up at all. This is where I tried Erica's method, and I narrowed it down to the C:\android drivers and it STILL didn't bring anything up.
Finally, I tried downloading and placing these (http://androidforums.com/incredible...ivers-adb-bootloader-disk-drive-htc-sync.html) drivers, and it still didn't find them.
Oh, and I also tried plugging my phone into the troublesome port and it connected fine, as per Erica's suggestion, so I think this is some kind of driver issue.. but WHAT!
Thanks for all of your help so far!
EDIT: Here is the icon I am getting when I plug my tablet into my computer: http://i.imgur.com/jUf54.jpg
Not sure you tried this or not.
Go to Acer.com then there download drivers page. look. for Acer sync. Download and install that. it just might install the Acer adb drivers
Beyond that I say go to Ms tech site and search for USB host/driver issues.
Sorry its not working but at this point I have no idea without being infront of the machine.
Good luck

Yeah, that's the last of my guesses, and it was the last sets of drivers I installed on my Win7 before I got ADB working. I had issues connecting ADB, and may have just installed the HTC divers, just to connect with my Desire. I think after that, I installed the google drives, and could connect with my 501.
I could always get the PC to recognize the tab, just not through ADB.
With that AOKP rom though, I am not sure. I had it for a bit, but reflashed back to my 3.2.1 daily driver. Not sure if I could see it through PC, as I don't think I checked. Waste of time I think, as basically, it was 80% Thor Rom, and we all know it doesn't get 3g or gps on a 501.

I can't get it to recognize through ADB either. I'd love to try another ICS ROM, but I have to go through Dropbox and it gave me a smaller file name, so it isn't as safe. Might try to download through my a500.
I do have a Nandroid of 3.2.1, bit I doubt that could fix my issues.

you running custom rom?
If so, after you hook up kindle, look in status bar of kindle for usb icon. Click that and turn on USB storage. That will make your kindle accessible as a drive in windows.
What I did when this happened to me was factory reset kindle (it was on stock rom in process of rooting) and then got recovery and stuff. Then mounted usb from recovery and flashed CM9
I'm running stock, I just got it last night and wanted to root it and put android market on it. And when my free month of prime expired I was going to put cm7 or 9 on it. I'm very familiar with android. Is there a way to turn on debug with stock?

Stuck on Custom Boot Loader

So I upgraded my tablet to the Acer release of ICS and then rooted my tablet. Now I want to install custom roms and over clock. However when trying to run black thunders tool, it says that, upon the tablet entering apx mode that my drivers are not installed. So I get the driver software from Acer and when i try to install it, the driver installation errors out. So basically I'm stuck on where to go from here and what I can try to do. I'm running Windows 7 service pack one. Really need some guidance. I already tried to install the drivers as using the legacy option but that doesn't work either. What do?

Shouldn't be having issues installing Acer Drivers. Try this, right mouse click the driver.exe, and select "run as administrator". See if that helps complete.
Also, don't have your tablet connected when you do it. And don't have the flash program running either.

I made a backup of the drivers as installed on my windows 7 64bit system. They are in my DropBox here... {REMOVED, didn't work].
I don't know if you still need those, or that they will do you any good. I used a copy like this to install to my lappy when it was being cranky.
I just figured it was a bad download. Maybe it will work for you too.
(Just right click on the .inf file and choose install. Or use the driver wizard and point it to the folder where you unzip.)
You can always get the Google USB Drivers for Android, and install them manually via Device Manager. No installation process.

Ok, first. The files that I uploaded aren't working for me either, I thought that I'd backed them up using the same from when I was having problems with my laptop. Sorry about that. I killed the link above.
But assuming that you've already installed the acer usb drivers to your machine, here's how to manually install it.
Get your tab into APX mode and hook it up to your pc. Open Device manager. Look for the yellow triangle with APX. Right click, update drivers.
Choose to browse your computer for the software. browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Acer Inc\ACER ICONIA TAB\Win7\ADB\x64 and choose
NvidiaUsb.inf.
I just uninstalled and reinstalled twice too be certain. If that doesn't work. I'd try a different USB port/cable, even a different pc.
Alright, well I figured it all out guys! Finally running flexreaper. What happened was, I switched to another computer to get the driver working. Them I had to run that a.bat and b.bat files that have been floating around. Then I was finally able to get the boot loader functioning.
Thank you guys for all the help and suggestions!

[Q] Windows not allowing me to install drivers

My device is currently allowing debug mode. It is not rooted nor unlocked.
I plugged in my device and windows gave this weird sound (sorta sounded like three low beats in quick succession). I went to my device manager and it shows a Nexus 4 with an exclamation icon.
I opened up the properties and it says
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."
This is due to the fact that i uninstalled the drivers manually so i can try to reinstall them but when I chose to update the drivers and navigated to my /extras/google/usb_driver folder but immediately after i click the next button for it to install it brings up a window that says
"Windows could not find driver software for your device.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and visit its support section for driver software."
this comes up immediately after clicking next, if i choose to search online for driver software this same window pops up after about a minute.
What is going on and why wont it allow me to install my drivers?
Are you using Windows 8?

What drivers are you trying to install?
Universal Naked Driver is what I used.
Have you tried disabling USB debugging and plugging it in?
Have you switched it over to PTP?

Both the normal drivers and naked drivers have the same problem. I have tried disabling usb debugging, when i do that and plug it in the computer simply shows nothing in the device manager.
What is PTP?

Pull down from the top of your screen and select Connected as a media device to switch to PTP.
Have you installed any other USB devices lately?
Have you tried rolling back the drivers on your PC if they've been updated?
You could also follow a tool kit like Wugs for the driver installation. You don't have to root or unlock your bootloader with it.

When i plug my device in only one thing appears on the pull down menu. It says
"USB debugging connected
Touch to disable USB debuggin"
and if i touch it it brings up the developer options screen in the settings.
There is no thing that says "Connected as" or any other meaning of the words in my pull down menu.
Thanks for the link to the toolkit, if no one has any other suggestions i will attempt to use that (and hopefully that works).
EDIT: I tried using the toolkits usb driver installation guide and i get the same error..

This website gives instructions in installing drivers. Works for windows 7 too. Can't post proper link since I'm a new member.

I was having similar issues lately at some point between 4.2.2 and 4.3. I'm not sure why, but it stopped working. I ended up completely uninstalling my current driver, rebooting, and then installed the Google USB Driver via the Android SDK Manager:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html#download
All has been well ever since.

Yeah it uses wugs toolkit. I had problems installing the drivers on my laptop but the instructions from the website helps. Its mainly the part of uninstalling. Instructions 14 and 15 are the most important ones. Previous drivers conflicting with it.

Plug your phone in USB to your computer and go to your Device Manager. Under "Android Device" you should see something along the lines of "Google Nexus 4 ADB Interface". Right click, go to uninstall and then check off "Delete the driver software for this device." After this I unplugged my phone and rebooted. You may or may not need to put your phone into fastboot and uninstall the "Google Nexus 4 BootLoader Interface" driver as well (to get them both) -- I really don't remember.
I used to use toolkits as well, but I've grown to be independent of them and like to get more involved than I once did.
The short version: You said you were given the option to "Update driver". Just click that and then, from the List, pick USB Composite driver.
