Hi, I have tried z4root and SuperOneClick. But both dont seem to work, they freeze like mid-way. Z4ROOT gets stuck with the loading sign continuing to spin, but I have seen videos when it takes like 30 seconds. SuperOneClick gets stuck on Waiting for Device.... AND YES, I have tried these methods with USB Debugging checked.
I have, however, NOT tried the traditional update.zip/reinstall packages method. Because I cannot find a thread that confirms that works for froyo 2.2 (KA6).

I would just ODIN back to stock 2.1 and root with the update.zip... your choice, nice to have choices.

i know the feeling, i was having issues with SuperOneClick, worked for 3 hours on this. http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/How-Do-i-Root-my-2-2-Vibrant/td-p/709625 helped me out a bunch.
the traditional update.zip doesnt work until you get a new recovery mode installed.
i'll run thru his steps with my comments.
1. also make sure you are up to date on .NET
2. i ran this with both exploits, both times busybox didnt install (not enough space on system)
3.for step 6 it may be easier to unzip the 3e_recovery zip
4. i was a little confused as to where to put things, so i removed my micro SD card, and then put it on the "root" of the vibrant after mounting it.
5.and install it, i used it to figure out if i had "enough" root.
6. i installed a bunch of file browers trying to access system/bin, in the end my request for superuser wasn't popping up until i installed "superuser" from the market, then i used root explorer to do the rest.
7. i got lost trying to find this folder, its /res and /efs
8. more or less ignore what superoneclick says after you click the button, until it finishes.
9.install.bat is the one
10.i didnt do this
11. i had the install.bat send me into recovery mode and i reinstalled the packages
12. with any luck you should be there.
other notes: i installed busybox from the market, and used it to check to see if i had enough root. make sure busybox installs correctly before step 8.
also i ignored the instructions about turning on and off usb debugging, on my vibrant i could only turn it on and off if usb wasn't plugged in.

I picked up a Motorola Bravo to use as a secondary phone on ebay for a steal of a price and thought I would share some of my success / failures / tips I have learned so far.
Successes:
Rooting the phone this was very easy as I just followed other instructions on this forum.
1. Install Drivers from here: http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/ then reboot
2. Download and install latest SuperOneClick, unzip, plug in your phone, run the executable. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 Click the ROOT button and let it do it's thing. I suggest letting it install busybox as well. **NOTE THIS VERSION DID NOT work for Allowing non market APPS***
Allow non market APPS: this was a bit more tricky
1. Install the same motorola drivers from rooting (if you didn't already)
2. Find SuperOneClickv1.5.5 -- Be careful .. some of the files I found triggered virus warnings. Failures:
I have not yet been able to completely disable MotoBLUR. I saw two different ways of doing this... one was to edit the build.prop and add the following lines:
ro.mot.deblur=true
ro.mot.setuptype=2
This didn't work, but I also wasn't sure how to clear the phone data/cache ... maybe in the recovery mode? Can anyone confirm this method works on the Motorola Bravo?
The second method I saw was to type eebluroff I am assuming after booting the phone for the first im after a factory data reset. I saw one post saying you should be able to do this by bringing up the keyboard on the screen where you select the system language. I was not able to get the keyboard to come up therefore I couldn't get this method to work.
Anyone else have any luck?
Finally I plan to try carrier unlocking the phone, enabling wifi tethering, and eventually try a ROM or two out.
I'll say this now. I have the bravo. I have T-Mobile service. Not at&t. All I did was call them and asked for the code. Very nice people there. Took me about 10 minutes total including going through menu prompts and holding time.

And Super One Click will unlock non-market apps. Just click root and let it go. Reboot your phone. Click Shell root and let it finish. THEN click the non-market button W/O rebooting!

i went through a lot of threads, a lil bit confused, this is my first android phone. im already in love with it.
my bravo is unlocked with code, running 2.2.1 froyo, i think its rooted but im not sure, there is market logo on the home screen, and it has the superuser icon too when i click on the circle to app page.
and it doesnt really lag a lot, its just not as snappy compare to my friend's iphone4. never wanted any apple products, they are way overpriced lol, i think with mod bravo should run really fast doe.
cm7 or miui is androind 2.3 right? is there any glitch after install it? what are the steps if i wanna install one of them

I've been dealing with SOD (Sleep Of Death) problem since official OTA ICS update. On HC everything (except calendar) was fine, but after official ICS update I was having SOD almost every sleep longer then few minutes.
Tried WiFi/sync tricks etc.
What helped ? Well..
1. hardware reset (Vol+ / Pwr / RotateLock)
2. factory reset (from Settings Menu)
3. full update via sd card (Vol- / Pwr)
OFFICIAL ROM: 7.014.16 - 041.213.01 - COM_GEN1 (ICS)
(Acer_A500_7.014.16_041.213.01_COM_GEN1_1336732099520_45282ff4.zip)
and once again:

yes, but you can use titanium backup or similar app to do it for you...
I have a A501 and want to get rid of this sod problem. so i took the last "Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 (LEAK)" Rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560 and tried to install the update.zip file from the sd card. When i get to the recovery it starts but crashes after a few seconds. Do i habe to install a different recovery or unlock my bootloader? I'm a little bit confused...can somebody give me a short hint? This is probably because of a couple of reasons.
1. You didn't do the incremental update. The available update files are incremental patch files, which means you have to have the others installed before you install the latest. Or at least part 1 and 2 of the original leak.
2. You didn't decrypt the file and remove the "update.zip". Generally, you can't just rename these update files to "update.zip". So the latest OTA you took, you should decrypt it "if it needs it", open in 7zip or Winzip and pull the update.zip file and copy that to your EXT SD card.
The final Official release build, was build .021. So if you still get SOD on .021, then chances are you have one of the later revision tablets, and may have to wait a long time until Acer releases another update, as the later revisions only account for a very small percentage.
Or, you can install the unlocked bootloader, and try one of the newer kernels we have.

Thanks for your replay. So what i did was to install all available OTA updates. Then i downloaded the full package Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 (LEAK) from the site above, extracted the update.zip from this archive and put it on the external sd card. i think that is all i have to do. And my current build number is Acer_AV041_A501_1.021.00_EMEA_DE...so don't know exactly if "[LEAK]Acer A501 ICS (COM_GEN1). Build number 041.126.01" is the same version.
And i tried to unlock my bootloader but the next funny thing is that i tried that Afterota-Tool, but it stucks at 3/4 "Flashing recovery...".

You current build is cooked my friend. Unless you want Acer repair.
Most of all OTA ICS Updates are Com Gen 1 now. Not sure what acer had in mind. But I believe it has duetch or danish language.
You have to use a 501 update if you want to use 3g and GPS.
My question, were you successful in booting to your system after installing the updates correctly? That is my primary question. If so, make sure you have USB debugging turned on.
But I need to know exactly what your tablet is in now before going further. Does it boot into the OS after running the updates?

I don't know exactly which updates you are talking about. I installed all the available ota updates and the tablet booted correctly after this. If you mean any other update via sd-card i can only tell you that i was not able to install one of them. what do you mean with "cooked"? sorry for stupid questions

For right now, let us work on things. This may take a few days.
As with Unlocked Bootloader and CWM recovery.
Here is what you should do.
GET YOUR UID NUMBER and write it down.
1. Make sure your Acer drivers are installed.
2. Using After OTA, only install the Patched Bootloader.

So in Afterota i open the tab advanced and there i can choose "browse for custom bootloader" and i can choose between different binary files. I think "bl_ics_ac_v8.bin" or "bl_ics_pb_v8.bin" should be right. What's the difference, what's the right one?

Well, I did things the old fashioned way.
If I am to guess. the first one is CWM recovery included, and the second is Public Recovery included. I never used this tool
I would choose door number 1
BTW, there are other methods to install these things. But let's see what happens. Personally, I don't use these all in 1 tools. Got too many of them in the forums. But, let's see what happens.
If not successful, we'll use My method. And you will learn something in the process.

Let's get your computer prepared the way it should always be when dealing with the dark side of android.
Your tab is running now, and that's good. You have a .021 build. Ok. But let;s see if we can make it better.
First thing, and I hope you have Windows XP or Windows 7.
Download and install the Android SDK.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Now, next, is the Oracle Java Platform (JDK)
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
After you do these 2 things, well, we can move over to the dark side.
Now, after everything is installed, I want you to do something.
Connect your tab with USB debugging on. (Never turn this off)
Open Windows explorer, go to C:\program file (x86)\Android\Android-sdk\platform tools . Open a command window here (SHIFT & Right mouse click)
Then type adb devices in the CMD window. Should show device connected and some numbers.
This tells me the drivers are installed.
If not, You have to install Acer USB drivers from the website.
Then try again.
And that, is as far as I go tonight, too late.
Tomorrow, I will give you a lesson in NVFlash and fastboot.
Rule number 1. Drivers, Drivers, Drivers. This was just to prepare your system.
To save some time, for tomorrow, shut down your tab.
Using a paper clip, or needle or something. Press and hold the pin hole button near the USB port. Hold it. Then, press and hold PWR button. Wait 4 seconds, release PWR only. 1 second later, release the pin hole.
Tab should be black. PWR button white. You may get vibrate.
This is what we call APX mode.
When you connect your tab to your PC, after a few seconds, the PC should recognize this as (Recovery Mode, APX Mode, or Download Mode)
Will need to know what it says. If it says nothing, but gives you an error in Windows device manager, then Houston, we have a problem. And the problem is the drivers. And you need to fix it. You may have to manually select from a list or tell it where the drivers are.
And that is all for tonight Mate. Baby needs bath.

Not that I demand it, but, it's customary to hit the "thanks" button for those that help
Always remember, you have a "fastboot" bootloader, so if something happens, you can boot to the Fastboot, and do things like install boot.img's (kernels), Custom Recoveries, and some other things. That's why you installed Android SDK. Also, you have ADB capability as well.

In addition: Now i am using "ICS Evil Alex Unleashed Ver 2". I switched because gps is not working when using tegraowners rom. Now it seems, that all important features are working! Thanks a lot for your rom!
I have the official A500 ICS, didn't do anything other than the OTA upgrade, and it worked fine until I installed some additional apps, it started to do the SOD. Then I uninstalled the latest apps I added, more likely instagram, and the SOD went away, till now at least. So, if you can't get it to work, maybe a factory reset to clear out all the apps might help, then, add apps slowly to see find out which one actually act bad.

Great tutorial!
I have a500 with ota ICS. Rooted. Locked bootloader. And working fine, but I think it could be better..
I am used to flashing rom and kernel on my android phone, but it looks like it is a bit more difficult on this device..
If I want to try another rom, should I follow your tutorial first? Or what do I do?
Oh, and what rom do you recommend? - I need fast, reliable and everything working.. Nothing fancy is required

Since my Iconia updated to ICS it "freezes" when left unattended and powered on for a little while. The only way to bring it back is to hold the power button down for about 8 seconds, release it and then hold it down again for about 4 seconds. It then starts back up.
I have searched many forums and have tried the following;
1. Factory reset (many times)
2. Not loading apps
3. Turning blue tooth on
4. Setting WiFi policy to never sleep
5. Setting WiFi policy to sleep when screen is off
6. Disabling Google+
7. Setting display sleep to 30 minutes

This has gotten beyond frustrating and has led to a tablet that, in many ways, is useless to me now. Does anyone have any other thoughts?
I am not very technological so I have never considered rooting but, if there is a rock solid way to do so and solid ROM I may consider it.

This has gotten beyond frustrating and has led to a tablet that, in many ways, is useless to me now. Does anyone have any other thoughts?
I am not very technological so I have never considered rooting but, if there is a rock solid way to do so and solid ROM I may consider it.

Do a search for SOD, sleep of death.
Are you on ota ics...? I take it you did not have that problem on HC
I have had that problems on some software versions and not others, currently on ota ics stock no root and have that problem.

Yes - stock OTA, no problems with HC. Have never tried to root - not very technical

Rooting is not that hard. If you can follow the instructions then you can do it.

Thanks for the encouragement! I am willing to try to get a working Iconia back. I am sure that my next question has to do with personal preference but what ROM should I flash? Is that the correct question?

will give you some basic background - with links to the latest roms, root and flashing tools etc how to get yr cpuid, drivers installed etc etc...there is also a step by step pictorial to flashing the bootloader using apx Flashtool.

Thanks for the link! What is the most stable ROM out there? Will I run into issues with apps not working?

The only trouble you will have is not following the install instructions in the OP of whichever ROM you choose.
You must do a full wipe/format of /data/media and /flexrom partitions - both before and after flashing yr rom .
Updating the Bootloader to the patched ICS should resolve the sleep of death issues.
I can only suggest the rom I have used which is mainly the flexreaper series - atm I am running the RE-FLEXxx 4.0.4 rom of civato's and couldnt be happier - its smooth and snappy, has great battery life and I've had no issues - oh yes I did, boot looped after flashing but I did another wipe and all was well...
Link to Civatos "Flex series" Roms Most of the recent roms need the ICS patched bootloader. But FLEXREAPER-RF1_rv3-CUSTOM-ICS can be run on the HC BL but as I said before it is best to update once you're feeling up to it
Thors Rom from Tegra owners (google) is a very stable and popular rom based on CM9
So to recap:
You will have issues running ICS on the HC bootloader
Use cwm 1.7.3 to do a nandroid backup-it should generate a "uid.txt" file in yr backup folder and also displays it on-screen
Your HC uid is VITAL to unbrick in case things go pear shaped
Now that you've done this you can look at rooting and flashing a custom recovery.
Root It - icsRoot from Blackthund3r
Install a custom recovery - Flash CWM 1.7.3 custom recovery to backup/restore, flash roms etc, get yr uid OR
download Acer Recovery Installer to install the "recovery" for you
DONE!!
You can flash any ROM that is compatible with the HC BL - the OP will always say if it is or not.
Just one more thing - there are a variety of ways of rooting and flashing the BL you can go about it manually or use one of the many automated tools to do it for you. It depends on what you feel comfortable with!!
The major steps to flash the patched bootloader - (from civatos guide)
Step 1 - Make sure the acer and android drivers are installed
Step 2 - Retrieve your cpuid
Step 3 - Generate the SBK (Secure Boot Key) from Vaches Site
Step 4 - Flash yr ICS Rom of choice
Step 5 - Put yr tab in apx mode
Step 6 - Flash the Bootloader via manual nvflash (civato's guide) or
apxFlash Tool (Blackthund3r) or
if you want to automate everything from root to b/l then gersma's afterOTA tool is the one for you - all the links you need you can get from the original link i posted.

i have official gingerbread 2.3.5.
i want to root my phone but no method works.
when i follow steps indicated to use superoneclick, the program goes on till step 7 and then stops responding.
i have tried one click root but makes issue of driver. i have installed drivers from many places, even from where the one click program states. still no success.
when i try to use the boot.img method, i cant do it because when after the pressing the keys to enter the pink screen, when i connect it to the pc, no drive shows up into the computer so i cant copy the boot.img file.
i dont know what is the problem. No rooting method is working.
by the way i have installed wondershare mobilego software for android on pc.(Do you think this could make a problem). And on my phone i am using go launcher(Do you think this is making problem). By the way my phone randomly restarts and shutsdown (the reason why i am switching to cyanogen mod). Do you think i should first again do a clean install of gingerbread then do all this rooting and flashing of cyanogen. Please respond quickly.
(If there is a problem of drivers, kinldy post the link that HAS the drivers in it that will allow me to root)

Did you try with Z4root? I think it works well on Gingerbread. You can try to "downgrade" to your stock rom and then update to GB.

I had this problem with SuperOneClick. Happens because all steps are not done properly. Make sure you do all steps and before using SuperOneclick make sure you reboot your phone.
If that doesn't work then PM me and I will send you proper steps.

I had exactly same problem before, make sure that you have ADB drivers installed before using SuperOneClick
after I installed ADB i rooted my phone whitout any problem
