Darkside Sense and Genius button? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm tearing my hair out here... Maybe someone can fill in the blanks for me.
I recently switched to this rom as suggested by a user of this forum. Fantastic Rom, and I regret stating on stock for long.
However, the lack of a genius button is almost a deal breaker for me as I use it to text while driving - I just hit the button and connect it to my stereo.
In my attempts to add the functionality back in (which according to another thread here is possible), I'm having no luck, but plenty of fc's.
To be honest, I know enough to root a phone and flash a Rom, but this one is a little rough for me, so I admit I took the lazy approach...
First I found a zip file for the app, but it just fc'd even after fixing permissions and rebooting.
Second I tried adb to push the files to their app appropriate locations, but I can't figure the damn program out.
I finally settled on using es explorer to move the files from my sd. I fixed permissions with rom manager and rebooted, and it still fc's.
Any ideas? Bad download? Am I missing a related app that is tightly integrated with this one?
I suppose I could try restoring the stock rom, backup the genius app, flash darkside and then restore the genius backup, but that's a pain...

Hmm, I never tried putting the genius app sense 3.5. You used the Genius app for GB, right? There is one for Froyo and one for GB. I know that the apk HAS to be a system app or its FC city.

I believe it is the GB app, but since the first link I tried was dead, It's possible I pulled the wrong one while searching for the file elsewhere. I'll check that.
The two apk files are in system/app, and the two so files are in system/lib as per instructions given in a thread.

Just a thought...
I'm no expert at this, but if I have a copy of stock TMO GB on my computer, is it possible to just unzip the folder and pull the 4 required files from it?

Here is a couple of zips I have on my computer at home that may be what you are looking for. I think 1 of them is for froyo and the other for GB, but im not sure.

Thank you! I used the genius_fix.zip and manually dropped the files in with ES Explorer according to wademan's directions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218808&page=3
Mapped the button and it works like a charm!
Now I have a great rom and have all the apps I need for my daily use.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this. Much appreciated.

Awesome. You were probably using the Froyo app.

[Q] home switcher wont stick?

hi, im perm rooted with s=off and a clockwork recovery, when ever i default a launcher with the app "home switcher" it never sticks. i was wondering if anyone else has the same problem
Home switcher says right in the download that it doesn't work with Froyo... however, it does work with some ROMS better than others as I've been playing with on my Evo for about 4 months. Sometimes it acts just like you describe. Sometimes it lets me actually stick with a default. Blame the author... he isn't updating it.
Oh wow thanks I didn't even see that lol but yeah I switched to homeshack and it works!

Never heard of that one and it doesn't come up in market. Where did you get it?

Actually, it does work with Froyo even though it says that in the Market (that's probably the official line, so we can't ***** about it). If you read comments & online there are plenty confirmed working w/Froyo.
I had it on my MT4G and it worked fine until I permrooted w/S=OFF. Now any time the phone restarts I have to choose the default launcher again.
So, OP is correct, but since it's officially not supported... Glad you found an alternative.
oops didnt refresh page before posting
Fyi, I've tried Home Manager and it doesn't stick either.

Home Switcher has an app made for Froyo (HomeSwitcher for Froyo) I use it and it works very good. There is an added step to take before it sticks but it never fails.
Why do you need a home switcher? Its not hard to change defaults through your settings.

[Q] TV like screen off visual

I come from the Samsung Vibrant Dev area. A friend of mine has a Droid X and all he does is flash Roms, doesn't know much about them. His phone does a TV like on/off animation when the screen goes on and off. What is that? Where is it located/ implemented. any info on it would be great. As search is down right now i cant search it. I am interested in possible porting it.
The liberty tool box has a bunch of different startup animations to choose from, I'm not sure if the one your looking for is in it but it does have the option to add ones from your SD card. Its meant to run on the x with the liberty rom but if you can port it then it might be a good place to start.
Edit:ah just reread your post you're looking for when it goes to sleep, sorry don't know that one. Sounds cool I'll have to look out for it.

Unless his rom is built on 2.3 I don't think it is. Since that power off tv animation is part of 2.3 and 2.3 only good luck.
I think you might be right but I thought it was a feature he was planning on adding. I did some searching and did find that the ultimate Droid has the feature, here's the link...

Edit: and just because its a feature of 2.3 doesn't mean its impossible to port it.

Cwm not working correctly --sub menus

OK so I am new to the mt4g... I currently use a sgs4g, the rest of my family uses the mt4g and they live in Indiana while I live in Texas. I followed the guides to get the phone rooted with s-off. I installed the cwm from rom manager becuz I could not find an up to date thread. Anyways when I reboot in to cwm it seems to work fine except when I try to go into a submenu it just gives me a blank screen with no text. I was going to do a nandroid back up but this is not possible without getting into the submenus of cwm. I then tried rom manager to flash virtuous unity and it worked perfectly. I am unsure of what is going on exactly but I am afraid that if the phone happens to soft brick I will not be able to get back into recovery or even if I do I cannot flash anything or be able to unbrick the phone. I am not nooby I have been working with android for a while now and have soft bricked my sgs4g many times while learning. Almost hard bricked due to wrong bootloaders. Anyways one thing I left out is if I try to click the power button while I am in one of the blank submenus it just goes back to the main menu.
Any help would be very much appreciated and also I do not have a usable computer ATM so everything I do is with my phone or someone else's.
Thanks guys for all the fantastic threads for the mt4g, it only took me about 2hrs to get s-off and roms installed, minus the 4 hrs it took me to realize that only the final s-off method works on the 0.86.0000 bootloaders.
Again thank you.

Are you hitting the power button? If so, you need to click the track pad to select a sub menu in recovery. This happened to me as well until I tried the track pad and it works flawlessly!!!!
Try using the track pad to select your option... Sounds like you are using the power button to make selections in recovery which just puts the phone to sleep, so to speak...

Oh I didn't think to try that because I'm not use to having a trackpad. Thank you for your help.

Inverted mms for ICS

I was using version 9.2 of passion rom and had the inverted black mms with blue icons.
I tried reapplying the zip for v10 and it wont work...
So i tried pushing the apk file, and all the mms will do now is force close if i try to open it..
I guess v10 is causing some conflict v 9.2 doesnt, but i cannot stand the blinding white mms...
Ive always been curious... why is the stock messaging app always so basic and optionless? You would think that since anyone who has an android obviously texts that you would make the messaging app cool? Instead u have to download a third party messaging app from the market.. doesnt make sense to me as i would think they would be simple changes... any feedback?
Thanks to anyone who knows about this mms deal on v10!

I am using an inverted mms.apk but I'm not sure if its the same one you're talking about. Mine has grey icons and all I have to do is install the apk from the phone and it replaced the system app. I got it from the I9000 apps forum. Try searching there. Its just an .apk, not a .zip.

Whatever kid, we have a confirmation it works, I was testing out the three new modded versions of it last night and they all work. Just because you can't figure it out, doesn't mean its not working for everyone else.
And I am just supposed to assume to know what you have done?? That childish to think someone will just know what you have done and assume you have tried anything at all without you relating that information.
Did you ever think it could be that dirty ass neobuddy rom you are running? As this mms has confirmation of working on ICS on multiple devices, but errors out on one I have heard of, YOURS!
But you know what, have fun kid, if you can't take advice from a dev, and want to act like a ****, then thats your perrogative, but I am officially done with you ****ing kids.
I'm not an idiot, and it just force closes on my phone. It's not that hard to push a file.
Anyways, thanks for your suggestion. I had assumed it didn't work because lof the 4.0.3 / 4.0.2 difference but maybe it's something else.
I will try a fresh install of passion and see if that possible resolves the issue.
Thank you.
Here's what I did:
1] rename original Mms.apk to mms.apk.bak
2] move the inverted mms.apk to system/app
3] make sure permissions match
4] reboot
If that doesn't work then yeah install passion fresh. That's what I'm on now and those steps above is all that I do.

It's a legitimate request I've seen before. I mean, why let your old devices just waste away when your children or family members could totally use them as dirt cheap replacements for iPods and such. You don't want them making accidental emergency calls or circumventing the settings you put in place.
Should be able to completely remove the radio somehow so that the cellular stuff just won't work.

Maybe this is a project for some of the budding devs on xda. In theory, it sounds like a simple change. Simply remove the phone aspects of a rom and repackage. I'm sure it's harder than it sounds in terms of stability and usability though (I'm not a dev) =/

Eh, some apps certainly wouldn't work, anything that needs to communicate through telephony and such. But really shouldn't be that difficult.
I'll come back when I'm not too terribly busy with some links about breaking down and customizing ROMs and such. I know that I've found a thread specifically for this kind of thing for another device, but there are a few of them I read up on so it may take a while to locate. Hell, you could just about remove the phone and contacts apps and edit your build.prop and leave an existing ROM intact. I'm no dev or anything though lol so I'll look around.

Not the OG article I had read, but after a bit of Googling I came up with a script that you should be able to set to run at boot which will disable your radio.
You may also be able to dial *#*#INFO#*#* and choose turn off radio, but that will not be persistent across reboots. I would use the script and a third-party launcher that can hide apps so that you'll keep the phone and contacts apps and such for stability, but not have them readily available.
*EDIT:
And a flashable zip! Thank you jellybellys!
**EDIT:
Just to elaborate about that flashable zip, it will actually "permanently" (until you wipe and install another ROM) disable the radio and clean out the apps that you don't want. Also installs some kind of binaries if they're currently absent from the ROM. Great find, I'm glad you asked about this!
exactly, my first thought would be just to use titanium backup and disable/freeze but not remove apps such as dialer or what you dont want/need. not sure if this will work but its worth a try. probably a few treads across xda on this (especially on older model phones) id search in those and see if there is a quick answer short of developing a whole new rom

I'll try it out on my phone, see if I can't replicate the issue and speak with the dev. Exactly what MIUI build are you on?

So that's the MIUI.us "Pure English?" I've just downloaded the last available build and will soon flash and then install jellybellys's zip. I'm hoping that will get me the same FC's as you are.
Once you've gotten home after the weekend, try rebooting it a time or two and see if it consistently gives you the FC's.
Also, just curious, but are you using MIUI just because it's the most similar Android overlay to iOS? To make it a bit easier for your friend? Because you could hook him up with some ICS goodness otherwise
*EDIT:
Ok, looking through his updater-script vs. my /system/app/ directory, it looks like MIUI names a couple of apk's differently. I'm currently installing a fresh MIUI so that I can see the directory before moddified by the OG jellybellys zip, then I'll update his zip to reflect those different names and try to run it again. If successful, I'll post the modified file and hopefully we can get your friend a fun little multi-tasking media player
Ok sweet umm can u send me the edit zip
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2
Had a good look at the flashable zip, very simple. I need to learn to code, I guess this is a good small place to start lol
All I did was unzip his file, change a few things and added a couple extra lines to remove one more app he hadn't worried with. As said above this will disable your radio, install the radiooptions binary if absent, and remove a number of apk's from the /system/app/ directory.
Removed apps:
TelephonyProvider.apk - cellular service
TelocationProvider.apk - emergency location service (I just don't see the need if you're not connecting to cellular networks)
Phone.apk - your phone app - should also get rid of dialer, I'm trying to find out why it doesn't.
Mms.apk - messaging app
All credit to jellybellys @ rootzwiki.com of course, I couldn't have written this myself or anything.
jellybellys-mod-wifionly-MIUI
Again, the phone app will still be on the homescreen and you actually can't remove it. It won't dial anything, and will just cause the acore process to FC if you try. It's looking like the only way to get it really removed is to modify the ROM's zip so that it never installs the app to begin with.
I'm going to restore the apps again, see if Titanium Backup can't do a better job than outright removing the app does.
